Student voice involves students actively participating in their schools, communities and the education system, contributing to decision making processes and collectively influencing outcomes by putting forward their views, concerns and ideas. Student voice allows students to engage, participate, lead and learn. (DET). Teachers learnt that , “if we develop a culture where teachers and students work together, and where student voices are heard, respected and acted on, then we will build student’s confidence and a sense of self-worth, mastery and self-efficacy, so that students feel proud of and connected to their school, and develop responsibility for their learning and development.” Here are photos of our hard work! We are looking forward to supporting the students to have a greater say in their learning and experience at
Thomastown West over the next few years.
Toilets
Once again, another reminder about students using the
toilets sensibly. Again this week, the toilets in the multi-
purpose room were blocked by students stuffing paper
towel down them and toilets throughout the school have
even had whole toilet rolls blocking them. On one day,
Mrs Young was called to incidents in the toilets, no less
than SIX times! So far this year we have spent $3,500
just on getting the plumber to come out just to unblock
toilets.
Could all parents and carers please speak to their
child(ren) about behaving appropriately and sensibly in the
toilets? Thank you.

NEWSLETTER No. 33 3rd November 2017
From the Assistant Principal
Congratulations to our Sports Teams! Our sporting teams have had an incredibly successful week! The 5/6 girls volleyball team became the Regional Final Winners by knocking out four other local school teams. They will go on to compete in the State Volleyball Champion-ships in Dandenong on 25th November. The team would love families and friends to go along to cheer them on. We are wishing them the best of luck. 5/6 Kanga Cricket was a great success and a wonderful day for all involved. The sun was shining and everyone was smiling even after having to wait for the bus which was 45 minutes late. Each team played 4 games which were all of a high standard with some fierce competition. Both the boys and girls won 3 out of the 4 games they played with a fair few 6's and 4's being hit by all. The bowling was excellent and Josh even got two wickets in one over. Both teams should be proud and all the students were great representatives of Thomastown West.
Teacher Professional Learning On Friday, we had our curriculum day, where students don’t attend school and teacher get the opportunity to learn more about how to improve teaching and learning at Thomastown West Primary School. We specifically enjoyed our visit from Rosemary and Kaylene who are Education Improvement Leaders from the Department of Education. Rosemary and Kaylene delivered professional learning on how to amplify student voice in our school.

Hi Everyone!
A PARENTS/CARERS INFLUENCE This week I was in a lift at a shopping centre with an elderly lady and a young father and his son, aged about 20 months old. The lady asked the child for a Hi 5 which he gave with an open hand. The father then instructed his son to give a Hi 5 with his knuckles (as males do!), which again he did. I said to the father, ‘It’s easy to see who his son spends a lot of time with!’ ‘Yes’, said his smiling father, ‘and it is so much fun!’
Yes, ’t takes a village to raise a child’ BUT a parents’ influence is most important in the early years, including during their primary education years – more important than any school Principal or teachers and support staff. Despite peers becoming increasingly important, parents’ early influences (positive and negative) primarily remain as children become young people making choices for themselves.
These influences include coping skills with emotions, levels of empathy and respect for others and their community despite differences in gender, culture and faith, as well as ATTITUDES TOWARDS LEARNING, EXERCISING AND HEALTHY EATING. During my time at TWPS it has been a joy to get to know many of you. I have shared in stories of resilience and perseverance as you have pushed through times of trauma and become the wonderful persons you are. I have shared hugs as an expression of empathy and support. I have seen the wonderful results of parenting with a goal of wanting better for your children. There is much parents can do to provide the nurturing a child needs and an environment that fosters his growth. When you use your parental ‘power’ to do so, you can help your child become the best that he can uniquely be. Ultimately, a child needs you more than money or things. You are the greatest early influence as they depend on you for their physical and emotional needs. AND WE NEED YOU! We need your support as we care for and endeavour to help your children become eager learners who are also active and healthy - emotionally and physically. Sometimes this involves praise and reward. Other times it involves consequences for wrong choices.
As a parent I know how difficult it can be, but also I know how rewarding it can be! Let’s continue to work together for these wonderful young people.
