Thursday 22nd February 2018 Week 4 Term 1

From the Principal, Lunar New Year & Chinese New Year A very Happy New Year to all our Vietnamese and Chinese families. Vietnamese people celebrate Tet with family reunions, special foods and gifts. This festival is also an opportunity for Vietnamese Australians to share their cultural heritage with the wider Australian community.

For our Chinese families, this year is the “Year of the Dog”. The “Year of the Dog” is eleventh in the Chinese zodiac. The Dog represents loyalty and sincerity. We wish you all a prosperous, happy and healthy New Year.

Last Week’s Billy Tea Bush Band Welcome Picnic Last Thursday we had an entertaining Welcome Picnic and dance with the Billy Tea Bush Band. It was lovely to see so

many families enjoying a barbecue and joining in the dances performed by our students. Our school is a community

and we love having our families in our school. Our next family event will be Harmony Day later in the term. If you

would like to share some of your culture with our students on that day, please make contact with your child’s

classroom teacher.

Congratulations On Monday 19th February 2018, at our Investiture of Junior School Councillors, we announced our School Captains

and Junior School Council members for 2018.

Our School Captains are: Anna & David

Junior School Council Members: Ameera, Jack A, James B, Anna, David, Giselle, Jackie, Maddison, Macey,

Jasmin, Jake P, Ebony, Serenity & Christian.

I take this opportunity in congratulating each member and look forward to working with them throughout the year.

Students have a positive contribution to make within the decision making processes of the school.

When students are actively involved in these processes, they have an enhanced sense of commitment to their school

and its programs.

Junior School Council aims to provide students with a sense of pride and achievement, develop caring and responsible

attitudes with peers, provide an avenue for the development of “student voice” within the school and raise student

awareness of local and global issues.

We are a Child Safe School. All children have the right to feel safe and to learn.

We are committed to protecting the wellbeing of students in our care.

February Conferences This week we held our Getting to Know You Conferences. Teachers will use the information you have shared to ensure your child has successful learning experiences at school.

Teacher Professional Development In 2018, Kingsbury Primary School has been the recipient of a grant from the Department of Education. The grant supplies us with a Teaching Partner for 12 months. Our Teaching Partner’s name is Mrs Robyn Watson-Turner and her focus is to work with our school leadership and teachers to develop our capacity to teach literacy effectively. This is in line with our Strategic Plan goals for the next three years. We welcome Mrs Watson-Turner to Kingsbury Primary School.

Years 3-6 Camp Our Year 3-6 students are excitedly looking forward to School Camp next week. We hope for wonderful weather and a great experience for students and staff. Please ensure your child is brought to school no later than 8.30am on Monday 26th February. Students should bring their lunch, snack, water bottle and hat in a separate day-pack. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s class teacher on Friday.

Assembly There will be no assembly on Monday 26th February due to camp.

Dollarmite School Banking Student banking is processed each week by a parent volunteer, overseen by a staff member. In 2018, all deposit books must be handed into the school office, and not through the classroom teacher. At the end of the day, children will be required to collect from the office. School Council Meeting & Elections The School Council Election period has opened. We are seeking nominations for parent representatives on our School Council. There are 4 x 2 year vacancies and two vacancies of one year each. You may have another parent to nominate you or you can self-nominate. School councillors have an important role to play in the school with the development of policy and school governance. Meetings are held monthly on a Thursday, beginning at 7:00pm. Nomination forms can be collected at the office and close on Monday 26th February. We would love to have some fresh faces on board.

2018 CSEF Applications If you hold a current Centrelink Pensioner Concession or Health Care card, please pop into the office regarding your 2018 application. CSEF (Camps, Sports & Excursions Fund) is offered by the Victorian State Government to help eligible families with payment of camp, sporting events and incursions/excursions. Applications close soon.
