Dear Parishioners, Jesus didn’t hold anything back from his disciples. He told them that things would be difficult. When he spoke about the world he was very realistic. He spoke about wars and revolutions, earthquakes, plagues and famines, persecution and imprisonment, betrayal, hatred and killings. He told them that such happenings would provide them with an opportunity to bear witness to him and to the Gospel. It is in times of darkness that the light is needed. It is in times of falsehood that the truth is needed. It is in times of hatred that love is need. It is in times of war that peace is needed. And it is in difficult times that Christian witness is needed. By forewarning them Jesus was forearming them. He was saying: You’ll need wisdom don’t be deceived. You’ll need courage - don’t be afraid. You’ll need staying power and endurance - don’t give up. He will see to it that they will triumph in the end, provided they remain steadfast. Our times offer numerous opportunities to bear witness to Jesus and his Kingdom. The many tragedies and disasters that occur in our world could easily lead us to despair and convince us that we are the sad victims of circumstances. But this is not how Jesus looked on events. He called them opportunities. The ‘Break Open the Word 2017’ Book for Lectors/Readers will be available for purchase after Masses this weekend. The cost is $10.00 each. Please talk to the Mass Co-ordinator after Mass. The Social Justice Committee would like to thank all the members of the parishes who contributed to the Street Kids of Lae Appeal. Last year, over $4,400 was raised and this year they will raise over $5,000. The Memorial Mass was celebrated last Saturday. I would like to give a special thank you to all the helpers, musicians and Ministers who have helped in the beautiful liturgy. About 60 families and friends appreciated receiving the lovely red roses to present at the altar. Also, thank you to the Welcoming Committee and those who have contributed to the lunch after the Mass. This Mass is always very special for us to remember our loved ones and friends who have died. Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen. You will notice in the newsletter, the Wish List items for the refurbished Church. Anyone wishing to give any items on the Wish List or to give towards the Buy the Cubic Metre Campaign are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. All donations will be recognised either by a small plaque on the item donated or the name of the giver will be printed on the glass beside the side doors of the Church. We need to finalise these names very soon. As always, I am very appreciative of all those who give in any way towards our final goal of a wonderful refurbished Church. Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time: Year C

Introduction: We gather round the table of the Word, at which the Lord speaks to us to nourish our faith, to quicken, challenge and purify it. And round the table of the Lord’s Eucharistic bread and wine, his body and blood given for us in sacrifice, given to us as food and drink, and so we remember him.

First Reading: Malachi 3: 19-20 The day of the Lord was spoken of by many of the prophets. We believe that it came with Jesus, and will come again when Jesus returns. But in another sense, every day is the day of the Lord when grace is offered to us.

Second Reading: 2 Thessalonians 3: 7-12 We are not just to sit around in idleness waiting for the Lord’s coming. There is work to be done. And one of our first responsibilities is to work for the food we need in order to stay alive.

Gospel: Luke 21: 5-19 When the world will end remains one of the secrets of God’s providence. Time spent speculating about it is time that would be better spent in faithful service of God and loving service of our neighbour.

‘THE JOY OF LOVE’ FROM POPE FRANCIS

11. The couple that loves and begets life is a true, living icon - not an idol like those of stone or gold prohibited by the Decalogue - capable of revealing God the Creator and Saviour. For this reason, fruitful love becomes a symbol of God’s inner life

(cf. Gen 1: 28; 9: 7; 17: 2-5, 16; 28: 3; 24:11; 48: 3-4). This is why the Genesis account, following the “priestly tradition” is inter woven with various genealogical accounts (cf. 4: 17-22, 25-26; 5; 10; 11: 10-32; 25: 1-4, 12-17, 19-26; 36). The ability of hu man couples to beget life is the path along which the history of salvation progresses. Seen this way, the couple’s fruitful relationship becomes an image for understanding and describing the mystery of God himself, for in the Christian vision of the Trinity, God is contemplated as Father, Son and Spirit of love. The triune God is a communion of love, and the family is its living reflection. Saint John Paul II shed light on this when he said, “Our God in his deepest mystery is not solitude, but a family, for he has within himself fatherhood, sonship and the essence of the family, which is love. That love, in the divine family, is the Holy Spirit. The family is thus not unrelated to God’s very being. This Trinitarian dimension finds expression in the theology of Saint Paul, who

relates the couple to the “mystery” of the union of Christ and the Church (cf. Eph 5: 21-33). [Amoris Laetitia]
