Dear Parishioners, As we celebrate Father's Day, we congratulate all our fathers and all those incredible men who have inspired many in their role as a father figure. The world needs more good men whose exemplary lives are worth imitating. In our world today, many people need fathers in their lives more than ever. There is a sense of support that a father provides to a child. When a father is loving, supportive and affectionate, a child greatly emulates these good qualities from the father. Studies have shown that these good qualities contribute immensely to the cognitive development of a child as well as the social development of a child. These developments give a child a strong inner sense of well-being, healthy self-esteem and authenticity. Maybe you have a good father, or maybe you don't have a good father; maybe you have a good relationship with your dad, or maybe you don't; maybe your dad is still alive, or maybe he is dead as my father; what is important today is to acknowledge and be grateful for all those moments they cherished you, showed you love and supported you. Some of you may have a father figure in your life like myself; today, you thank God for the role they play in nurturing you to be a better person. God has placed them in your life for a purpose. In the words of Dr Gail Gross in HuffPost: on Father's Day, it is important to recognize and reward dads for being there, and actively teaching important life skills to children. It is important to their children, and meaningful to dads everywhere when you say ‘Thank you, job well done.' This, after all, is what makes life worth living. This is your true legacy: ensuring the health and well-being of your children, that future generation to be. My prayer today is that we pray for and celebrate our fathers and those who play the role of a father in our lives. Let your gratefulness be a light that shines for future generations. Our world needs more good men to inspire other people. And may Grace and Peace be with you! • Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time: Year A

Introduction: The call to follow Jesus seems inevitably to be the call to suffer. We are called to take up our daily crosses and follow Jesus, a messiah who does suffer at the hands of others.

First Reading: Jeremiah 20: 7-9 In this reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah, Jeremiah is lamenting his lot as a prophet, despairing at being deceived by God into being a prophet.

Second Reading: Romans 12: 1-2 Having finished the teaching section of his letter, Paul now embarks upon an exhortation to the Romans to live according to the gospel which he has preached to them.

Gospel: Matthew 16: 21-27 Having heard Peter’s profession of faith in last week’s gospel reading, this week Jesus predicts his passion, death and resurrection. Peter, so firm in faith last week, this week is the obstacle in the path Jesus must take.

‘THE JOY OF LOVE’ FROM POPE FRANCIS The Experiences and Challenges of Families - Some Challenges

    57. I thank God that many families, which are far from considering themselves perfect, live in love, fulfil their calling and keep moving forward, even if they fall many times along the way. The Synod’s reflections show us that there is no stereotype of the ideal family, but rather a challenging mosaic made up of many different realities, with all their joys, hopes and problems. The situations that concern us are challenges. We should not be trapped into wasting our energy in doleful laments, but rather seek new forms of missionary creativity. In every situation that presents itself, “the Church is conscious of the need to offer a word of truth and hope… The great values of marriage and the Christian family correspond to a yearning that is part and parcel of human existence”. If we see any number of problems, these should be, as the Bishops of Colombia have said, a summons to “revive our hope and to make it the source of prophetic visions, transformative actions and creative forms of charity”.

Looking to Jesus: The Vocation of the Family 58. In and among families, the Gospel message should always resound; the core of that message, the kerygma, is what is “most beautiful, most excellent, most appealing and at the same time most necessary”. The message “has to occupy the centre of all evangelising activity”. It is the first and most important proclamation, “which we must hear again and again in different ways, and which we must always announce in one form or another”. Indeed, “nothing is more solid, profound, secure, meaningful and wise than that message”. In effect, “all Christian formation consists of entering more deeply into the Kerygma”.

Preparing a Will is the best way to ensure that the people you care about are properly provided for. When preparing your Will, your heart and mind turn first to your family and loved ones. Once they are provided for, a Will is a unique opportunity to make a significant gift to the people and organisations you care about. Please prayerfully consider including a gift to our Parish. Your gift will help carry forward the gospel message to future generations.

For more information about how you can leave a legacy to our Parish, call the Parish Office on 3345 3766.

VOCATION VIEW: Don't run away from what you are called to be. Christians take the less travelled road. "What does it profit us if we gain the whole world but ruin ourselves in the process?"

SUNNYBANK SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMUNITY SEASON OF CREATION 2017

In 2015, Pope Francis established September 1 as the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, encouraging the Catholic community around the world to pray for our common home. Christian churches will observe the Season of Creation until October 4, the feast of St Francis of Assisi. The Season of Creation is a powerful time to bring together Christians in our common concern for creation. The Season of Creation serves as an important witness of how Christians, regardless of their denominational commitment, are united in prayer and action for the planet. For more information and prayer resources, visit www.SeasonofCreation.org

The monthly meeting of the community will be held in the Media Room on Thursday, 7th September, commencing at

7.00pm. All are welcome to join the discussion.

    CHURCH PARKING

The parking at the front of the Church at Sunnybank on weekends, is especially reserved for the elderly, the handicapped and those with small children. We are placing some signs to this effect at the entry of the carpark. If you are not elderly, handicapped or have small children, you are asked not to park at the front of the Church. It will be embarrassing to be asked to move.

    ALTAR SERVERS

Congratulations to all the families who have just had someone make their first Holy Communion. We are looking for those who would like to be involved with altar serving especially at the 9.15am Mass on Sunday morning. Please text Cameron Carroll on 0404 442 868 with your family and child’s name and I will call you to make a time on our altar server roster.
