The Kwajalein Hourglass is named for the insig-nia of the U.S. Army 7th Infantry Division, which liberated the island from the forces of Imperial Japan on Feb. 4, 1944.The Kwajalein Hourglass is an authorized publication for military person-nel, federal employees, contractor workers and their families assigned to U.S. Army Garrison-Kwajalein Atoll.

MIT LL RMI INTERNS PREPARE FOR FUTURE

FROM LEFT: RMI MIT LL Intern Dickson Batlok, Instructor Ranny Ranis and Intern Jakio Lamwe prepare for their final presentations at the end of the MIT LL RMI IT Information Technology Internship Program Aug. 18 at RTS Headquarters.

The Massachusetts Institute of Tech-nology Lincoln Laboratory recognized graduates of the 2018 RMI Information Technology Internship program in a cul-minating ceremony Aug. 18 at the Rea-gan Test Site Headquarters on U.S. Army Garrison-Kwajalein Atoll.

Ebeye residents Jakio Lanwe and Dick-son Batlok presented program highlights and final remarks in a briefing to MIT LL Site Manager Dr. Justin Stambaugh, USAG-KA Deputy to the Garrison Com-

mander Ms. Jenifer Peterson, RTS Range Director Lt. Col. Jake Wamsley, Systems Administrator John O’Rourke, Technical Program Advisor Jessica Holland, Intern-ship Instructor Ranny Ranis, MIT LL Site Security Manager Chameé Cross, Techni-cal Staff Dr. Bryan Reid and Administra-tive Assistant Stephanie Finley.

The competitive 10-week program is an annual opportunity for RMI citizens to secure hands-on job training in top-ics related to the professional IT field. Supported by USAG-KA, the program includes observations and field trips

around the garrison. Interns receive a weekly stipend and $1,000 in education scholarship funds. Upon completion of the program, the interns prepare to ap-ply volumes of technical knowledge to future IT careers. Proficiency in English and residency in the Marshall Islands are required of all prospective applicants.

Lanwe and Batlok described assign-ments they faced with Ranis, who has worked with the program since its in-ception 11 years ago. It was an intense, technical summer. The program's train-ing objectives included building com-puters and networks, troubleshooting hardware, working on data backup for Ebeye Hospital records and using oper-ating systems like Windows and Linux. Both interns learned to troubleshoot and repair computers that Ranis broke over their lunch hour.

The interns plan to use their train-ing to professionally benefit their com-munities. Lanwe, a teacher from Ebeye, will pursue opportunities to share his IT training with students, and recounted the empowering feeling he had when he discovered he could fix broken comput-ers using his training. Batlok, an Ebeye schools IT employee, hopes to further support school networks. He presented an early design for a network he will im-plement to assist communities on Ebeye and Guegeegue.

“My favorite part [of the experience] was installing the network,” he said. “The most important thing I learned [was how to] troubleshoot. I liked it when Ranny would break the computers.”

Stambaugh awarded the interns con-gratulatory certificates recognizing their hard work throughout the program.

Holland, who has advised the pro-gram for three years, says the experi-ence is beneficial to both MIT LL pro-gram staff and the students.

“They learn a lot,” said Holland. “The goal is that they continue on to receive more education and skills they can bring to their home islands and atolls, which is important to bringing a higher level of technology to the Republic of the Marshall Islands.”
