Why Puzzles?

Playing with puzzles can help children develop better spatial awareness and may even improve their maths skills, according to an article on www.nurseryworld.co.uk.

The Examiner looks in depth at the benefit and importance of puzzle play in children, and this excerpt below discusses in detail the various development areas:

Puzzles teach shape, color, letter and word recognition skills; sensory perception; fine motor skills such as grasping and manipulating objects; hand-eye coordination; spatial reasoning: problem solving/Reasoning skills; principles of deduction; part to whole / whole to part understanding; sorting and classifying; organization skills; self confidence; the value of patience and determination; social skills/cooperative play.

The use of puzzles, throughout a child's educational years, will benefit him/her in all subject areas: Language Arts (reading, writing, communication- speaking and listening), Math, Social Studies, Science, and the Arts. Every area of a child's life will benefit from the use of puzzles.

How early is too early to begin using puzzles? A parent (or educator) should begin using puzzles when the child is a toddler and can begin to grasp/manipulate objects. It is always important to use age appropriate puzzles because you do not want a child to become frustrated. So for toddler's, puzzles should be chunky and easy to manipulate and durable. It is also preferable to offer puzzles made of different types of material to build sensory development.

As a child grows and develops certain skills and abilities, puzzles should become increasingly challenging but never frustrating. If a child demonstrates frustration too often, the puzzle is too difficult. Also, be an active participant. Your child will learn a great deal through observation. If a child observes a given task over and over and still cannot complete it, frustration not education will occur.

Puzzle manufacturer's do a good job at labeling puzzles for age appropriateness. So use the manufacturer's age guidelines as a starting point when choosing a new puzzle for your child. Then, observe your child. As the parent, you know your child better than anyone else and you will know if a puzzle is too easy or too hard.

As your child grows and develops, introduce new and different types of puzzles. Continue this process throughout your child's educational years. Not only will it benefit him/her, if you remain an active participant in the process, your relationship will benefit as well.

This packet contains a selection of math puzzles of varying degrees of difficulty, aimed at elementary-level children, that will increase with difficulty as you go along. Some children may find them a little more challenging than others, and some may breeze through them all. You will be the best judge of the level of literacy of your child.

The puzzles towards the end of the packet are print and play, and can be adapted to harder or easier levels.

The three red chips need to exchange positions with the green chips. Print onto cardstock, laminate for durability and

protection. Cut out the game board and the chips.

The red chips can only move right.

The green chips can only move left.

A chip can move into an empty square.

A chip can jump over a different color chip as long as there is an empty square to land in.

A chip cannot jump over two chips or over a chip of the same color.

Some Extensions

Reduce the total number of chips to four to simplify the game. To make it harder, add two more, to make 4 per color. What

would happen if you had 3 yellow and 4 red? Is it solvable?
