EDITORIAL

Since its beginnings APCH placed

great value in the teaching of English

within the regular curriculum. This

stands in contrast to education

policies that viewed the teaching of

a second language only as

something additional, not obligatory,

for student development. Why? If we

analyze the importance of speaking and communicating in English within

the global context and the human

interest of crossing borders to

become part of new realities; to

know new ways to see the world and

to feel a part of it, without difficulties

and prejudices, we will have the

answer.

The APCH students are educated

using the principles of: curiosity,

socialization and discovery, which are

the motivating source of learning

about a new form of communication.

Without a doubt, the teaching of

English has allowed our students to

receive an education that

differentiates them from other

students.

To understand a language in its context and to relate it to the interests of those who are learning is fundamental and important in the teaching a language in classroom.

This magazine, entirely in English, is a

unique magazine that demonstrates

how much the new methodologies have

contributed when applied in the classroom by teachers who are in

charge of teaching English. Students

have developed all of the language

skills: to listen, speak, read and write, but

in an interdisciplinary manner that has

contributed enormously to their ability to

incorporate areas of knowledge as a

basis for their development and

practice. To understand a language in

its context and to relate it to the interests

of those who are learning is

fundamental and important in the

teaching of this language in the

classroom. It is necessary to highlight the

use of new technologies that

enormously support the rescue the

functional part of language and make it

interactive.

Dear readers, enjoy this issue that we

hope will be continued for many more,

discover the ability of its authors and

collaborators so that their efforts are

valued, their potential reached, and

they are positioned in other areas that

are demanded by current society.

APCH High School community is extremely happy with their

students’ achievements, especially those which were a new

challenge during this school year such us FCE and PET

certifications. With our authorities support, 3BGU and 1BGU

students were able to achieve a Cambridge Certification which

proves their English knowledge internationally.

Additionally, APCH is confirming its quality of bilingual school.

Students worked really hard since last School Year with the single

objective of getting ready for March and April when they were

going to take their examinations, and their effort was well

rewarded. However, this goal wouldn’t have been possible

without the commitment of APCH teachers and EF which was

the institution in charge of taking the tests in the school.

The results achieved surpassed APCH expectations regarding

students’ approval rate. Sixty eight percent (68%) of who took

the FCE exam got a pass mark, and eighty one percent (81%) of

1BGU students taking the PET exam reached the same goal.

Those results encourage next year students and teachers to

work even harder to equal or surpass them. An improvement

spinning wheel has started to move in order to bring excellence

to ANGEL POLIBIO CHAVES BILINGUAL SCHOOL.

THIS IS US, APCH. It is digital magazine designed to show what

APCH students can achieve while they are learning and

experiencing new teaching methodologies in our School. In

this first magazine number, you as a reader will be able to

know about what our students’ opinions are in different

articles related to History, Business, Politics and culture. They

have expressed their political position as young citizens, their

feelings and points of view regarding their reality and

preferences.

Moreover, the reader will be able travel to the best traditional markets in Quito, DM and read about sports,

music, love and much more. However, this is just the first of

many topics to be included in future magazines because our

students and teachers are eager to share with you what we

can do.

A special thanks to the English Department teachers who

were really happy to help and guide their students to

achieve the goal of showing to the school community their

achievements as a team because we, at APCH, we are

capable of doing great things.

HISTORY

Liberal Revolution

The liberal revolution had changed

everything in all points of view. It changed

Ecuador in a political, economic and in a

social way, and the most important, it

changed the way of think of Ecuadorians.

During his revolution, Eloy Alfaro was the

one who guided the liberal party, and he

had a lot of people with and against him.

However and in despite of all the

problems he needed to face, he kept the

idea of a new and better Ecuador. A

country which can improve based on its

people ideas and its people hard work to

make them real.

Based on those ideals, liberal believers

wanted to give power to the ones who

deserved it and they were supported by

any kind of people, from rich to poor ones

Their mistake was to fight against Church

without paying attention to Ecuadorian

citizens religious beliefs. In consequence,

they gained a lot of enemies, but it didn’t

stop them and they kept fighting.

In conclusion, liberal ideology and leaders

were really important in our history,

especially Eloy Alfaro who is considered

one of the best presidents of Ecuador.

Those ideals and people made Ecuador

change to find a way to a better country,

the country all Ecuadorians deserve.

PRESIDENT ELOY ALFARO 1842 -1912

Eloy Alfaro and the Liberal Revolution

In South America every country had a

leader that wanted to change the way

that people think and also the way that

the country was being ruled. In the case of

Ecuador this leader was Eloy Alfaro who

established a liberal revolution.

Eloy Alfaro had the dream to change the

country and he used liberal ideals to

accomplish his goal. The first important

thing that he did for the country was the

railroad. This helped the economy of the

country by making easier the trading

between the regions of Ecuador.

Additionally and according to his liberal

beliefs, he abolished “Concordato” or the agreement between Church and

Ecuadorian State, and took money from

powerful people.

These actions made Ecuador a country

with free trading, new ideas and less influence from religion including

education which went from Church hands

to the State.

In conclusion, Eloy Alfaro started a new

period in Ecuadorian History which shaped

the country economy, politics, technology

and education by changing citizens’ way

of thinking. Nevertheless, it did not end

well for him because he died hated and

forgotten for a long time.

Historical analysis of the Spanish Conquest in America The conquest of much of the New World by Spanish conquistadors was the greatest event in history. As

Bartolome de las Casas wrote, "everything that has happened since the marvelous discovery of the Americas has been so extraordinary that the whole story remains quite incredible to anyone who has not experienced it at first hand." Indeed it seems to overshadow all the deeds of famous people of the past, no matter how heroic it might had been it created a significant change in the Americas.

It has been taught to us that the our American Continent and its

culture was almost terrible before Spanish people arrived, but the

truth is that Americans were already civilize people and when the

conquistadores arrived they just ended with most of our culture,

leaving as a consequence a mixture of strains in here.

Civilizations such as the Incas, Mayas and Aztecs were great astronomers, mathematicians and farmers. The Mayas for example

wrote the Popol Vuh and created calendars depending on their

observations of the solar system. Or as the Olmecs who developed

the slash and burn technique for farming. At the time of the

conquistadores arrival, they disregarded the American Culture and

qualified it as useless, saying that Americans were illiterate, naive and

lazy.

AMERICA BEFORE AND AFTER

That is why the Spanish people burned and destroyed books,

buildings and set in the place of them their beliefs and symbols.

After 150 years of the conquest process, more than 65 million of

Native Americans were killed and most of their oral traditions ended

or were adapted by the Spanish Conquistadores.

So, the present America is a continent with a mixture of breeds and

costumes without a truly genuine country. Consequently, it is our

hands to recover our culture and be proud of it.

DID COLUMBUS RUIN SOUTH AMERICA`S LIFE

OR WE HAVE JUST BEEN DRAMA QUEENS?

The history of our continent has always begun with the process of colonization, as

if people did not exist in this territory. Of course, it was a good way to set an

example of who won and who lost.

For years we have heard two sides of the story, the passionate one that because

of them we are people and the dramatically one that we died in their hands.

Nonetheless, from this encounter of civilizations there were good and bad effects.

In fact, no one can deny that, these groups of Spaniards commanded by

Christopher Columbus who arrived to America and took possession of the land;

destroyed valuable cultural evidences as well as abused Native American people

forcing them to change their beliefs and work as slaves in the mitas.

Moreover, they brought technology that Native American people did not have as

the wheel and weaponry, they taught those good manners, culture, literature and

languages. Maybe thanks to them, people learned a lot from the world and were

stopped to be the way that they were and became civilize.

But what if, the Native American had not needed that aggressive encounter?

What if that Native American people discovered that kind of knowledge by

themselves? What if the Conquistadores took the time to meet and accept their

difference? For sure, that story will change its beginning and the drama queens

will be others. Regardless how the story of our nations began, it is our time and

place to change its path. People cannot continue looking back and torturing

themselves trying to change the encounter of these two different worlds. Sooner

or later America will rise because what cannot kill it make it stronger and fearless.

WHO REPRESENTS ME AS AN ECUADORIAN ?

America since always has been a

beautiful place to live. Thousands of

different species of animals and

plants coexisted together in

marvelous environments full of natural

resources. From the beginning of the

continent`s life, it was an amazing

place where people live peacefully

and harmoniously. They developed

their own technology to have a good

lifestyle and according to their needs.

But what would have happened if

the Spanish conquistadores or the

English did not come?

First, people would have lived longer

because due to the introduction of

smallpox, measles and other diseases

killed over three million people.

Also it is important to highlight that President Correa, with the

party, has significaly reduced the high levels of poverty and

inequality in Ecuador. Therefore, I strongly think that “Alianza

Pais” along with the President have made important changes

that have helped with the improvement of education and help

the country to cave economic growth.

Finally, as Martin Luther King said “I have a dream…” I really wish

that during this party is mandating, every single Ecuadorian

citizen would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty,

and access to a high standard of living with no discrimination,

wanting the best for our country.

Correa Delgado is the head of this party and with it, he has

carried out political, economic and social changes, which

have been called “citizen revolution”.

One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.

WHICH ONE DO I PREFER?

All around the world there are a lot of different

Political Parties. Every one of them represents a determined political ideology and trend. Even though it

seems that they seek for completely separate purposes

and reasons a series of things, in the end their final

purpose is often the same, the people’s wellbeing.

Every single person analyzes and lives differently from

others. Talking about Politics is just as hard as trying to

talk about Religion. Most people disagree with the

Political Party their neighbour prefers. Recently, I have

learned all about Ecuadorian Political Parties. For

example, “Alianza País 35” is in control of the entire

country since 2007. In fact, this is the favourite and most

popular Political Party in Ecuador.

All Ecuadorian Parties seem good to me as their visions

and missions are excellent, the problem consists in that

most of what they offer will never be accomplished,

because of mean politicians. I truly have a trust issue

with Politics in general, so I don’t support any Political

Party. However, “Alianza País 35” has proven that it is

doing a good job as head of the Ecuadorian

government for all the opportunities it has given to the

entire population.

In conclusion, we must learn to respect divergent

opinions, it is very important for us to not only vote for a

pretty face, but also for the best option we have found.

Talking about Politics you should be well-informed, but

over all things you must trust your guts.

When you start to study the State, government

organization, politics, you are always going to end in the

same questions, what should I believe as a member of an

organized society? Which political group follows my

necessities? What political organization is the best for my

country and of course, for me? It is really hard to think

about this because every person and country has a

different necessity.

I strongly believe that people lose time when they try to

find a party that convinces him or her. Personally, I think

that politics should not be engaged with power; I say this

because a lot of political parties have good and

revolutionary ideas when they start up, but at the end

things in the country still does not change.

Ecuador is famous for its colorful markets. The exotic colors, sounds, and smells grab the attention of Ecuadorians and foreign visitors. All the markets give you an amazing shopping experience. CENTRAL MARKET

Located on the streets Pichincha

and Manabi, almost reaching La

Marin , we find the most traditional

market in Quito. The Central Market,

founded in 1953 and remodeled in

2002, it is a place where scents,

colors and flavors are the stars next

to the characters who live day to

day between the walls and corridors

of the market. There are 64 stalls that

offer fruits, vegetables, fish, meat in

fresh and hygienic conditions with

good prices. But something that

makes this market different is the

traditional food. The variety of dishes

like llapingacho, papas con cuero,

mote con chicharron, yahuarlocro,

fried chicken, ceviche, guatita and

hornado are the hosts.

market is located in a rural parish of

Quito on the streets Calderon and

Ayora. It is divided in two sections. in

tortillas con caucara and tripas" served

in 15 stalls. The vendors are really kind.

patron, jefe, ingeniero, licenciada" as

open from 7 am and they close when

they finish the sales. On weekends

they also sell household items to

decorate your house. It is important to

know that you should bargain with the vendors and if you are lucky you

Since the beginning of human history, wealth has been

important. Centuries ago, food and territory amongst small tribes

were the most important. Now, the same principle still maintains

but the names changed. “Money” is what rules in this globalized

world. And those who have money make sure to let the others

know.

Globalization is not just any word. It involves series of aspects that

have changed Earth completely. Countries efficiently

communicated is the turning point to start a successful business,

but market has not always been this way. From small markets to

bigger ones, trade and negotiation were and still are involved. This

still applies, it is only the means and reasons that have evolved into

something much easier to control and more beneficial for both

parties.

Remember that it is a certainty that everybody keeps a bright

idea in their minds, so they are in fact able to convert that

knowledge into successful and profitable projects. But of

course, competence is a factor that should be taken into

account. That’s why in order to be a proactive and an

Finally, if you read the book you can imagine the story in your mind,

and not only watch the ideas that the director captured in the film,

one good example is that you can imagine the costumes of Katniss

Everdeen and Peeta Mellark burning in fire while they present

themselves at the Capitol, or how the arena looks like. It all depends

on how you use your imagination to re-create this amazing story.

in conclusion, I think both reading the book and watching the film

were very pleasant to me, but I highly recommend reading the

book first. In this way, you can have a good idea of what you are

about to watch and judge that all the details and ideas from the

book will appear in the film. So the next time you want to watch a

movie, you should be sure of reading its book first.

Nowadays people are so surrounded by technology

and distractions that they have forgotten how important

sports are for them. Despite of all the healthy benefits

that running provides, there are also other reasons why

people consider running an excellent sport: it increases

a person’s confidence, it gives the runner an obstacle to

defeat and a goal to reach, and it definitely makes the

person feel strong and capable.

So if we analyze better why running

is such an excellent sport we will

find out that firstly it increases a

person’s confidence: it tests your

mental and physical limits so you

can prove how strong you are,

maybe you will give up, maybe you

won´t, but you will sooner realize

that your body can accomplish

much more than you think.

Secondly, it gives the runner an

obstacle to defeat and a goal to

reach: every step you take, you are

closer to the goal and it demands

you totally concentration and

perseverance.

Thirdly, it makes the person feel

strong and capable: most runners

agree that what they like the most

Every time a movie, inspired in a book, is shown to the

public, not all the people find it as good as the book they had already read, and they sometimes have

disagreements with the people who did like them. That is

why reading a book has certain advantages over

watching a movie because it gives you more details

about the situations that happen in the story, it also

explains the storyline in a better way, and it allows you to

imagine it in the way you want, not only by following the

ideas of the movie director.

First of all, reading a book gives you more details about

the characters and the places where the story takes

place, for example, in the book “The Hunger Games” the

author gives a more detailed explanation about the

Cornucopia blood bath. She also talks more about the

connection that Katniss Everdeen from District 12, and

Rue from District 11 have during the training sessions and

in the games. These are very important points that aren’t

well captured in the film.

Secondly, the book gives you a better explanation of the

storyline, for instance, the book is written in the first-person

perspective of Katniss Everdeen, but in the film there were

several changes on how the story was revealed to the

audience. When you read, you can imagine yourself as

Katniss Everdeen while she lives this dangerous journey,

and that is what makes it a lot more interesting and

fantastic.

If you read the book you can imagine the story in your mind, and not only watch the ideas that the director

captured in the film.

book? Watching a movie has more advantages over

reading a book mainly for three reasons: Movies have

especial effects that help people to understand the story

completely.

to help the humans to fight the orcs, fact that does not

Secondly, movie producers try to make the story

interesting for the viewer, as they include scenes to catch

the viewer´s attention in order to avoid making the story boring; for instance: in the movie “The Lord of the Rings

the Two Towers”, the Epics battles captures your attention

and the action sequences prevent you from getting

bored.

Finally, movies have lots of special effects that help the

people to understand the story completely. Now we are in

the 3D era which helps us to open our minds to these

effects that just make our imagination to defy what we

think is possible; like In the movie “The Lord of the Rings The

Two Towers” the effects used in the battle of the deep of

helm and in the battle of Gandalf against the Balrog are

amazing and makes you realize how the situation would

be if it were real.

All these things considered, It is clear the reasons why

watching a movie is better than reading a book, taking in

account that it can help you to give a new interpretation

of the story from the book with a more complete and real

representation.
