MSL competence
• The competence of MSL can be exemplified by the DESIREE project which requires most areas of our competence.
• The unique design of DESIREE limits the possibility to use standard components. MSL has designed and constructed a major part of all the DESIREE components.
MSL competence
• Accelerator physics
• Vacuum technology
• Cryogenic technology
• Mechanical design and construction
• Electronics
• IT and data
Competence: Accelerator physics
• Ion optics have been calculated from ions source to stored beams.– Design of optical elements
– The required precision of optical elements, both from manufacturing and positioning.
– Required stability of the HV-supplies
• Diagnostics– Experience in low intensity
beams from CRYRING

Stabile working points (10keV)
• Low pressure crucial for long beam life times.
• Pressure range, sources to rings: 10-4 – 10-12 mbar
• UHV in combination with cryogenic temperatures limits the use of standard vacuum solutions – designs and materials must be vacuum and cryo compatible.
Competence: Vacuum technology
~5m3/<20K/<10-12mbar
Competence: Cryogenics
• 1.5 tons of aluminum will be cooled to <20K
• Cryogenic temperatures limits the cooling power, so heat transfer must be minimized
• Cryo-compatible materials must be used
• Cryogenic parts have to interact with room temp:– Pump ports– Injection ports– Supports– Electric cables
<20KRT
Competence: Mechanics
• Idea -> Design -> CAD -> Manufacturing (int. & ext.)
• Large vacuum chamber means heavy loads (120 tons!)
• Positioning with high precision.
• Key components have been manufactured and tested in the MSL workshop.
120 tons
Competence: Electronics
• More than 200 HV supplies and amplifiers have been constructed and built at MSL.
• Injection supply: -10kV to 10kV in s
• Noise level of all ring HV-supplies: U/U<10-6
• Current amplifiers to detect ion beams in the femtoAmp range.
Competence: IT and computing
• Hardware & software• Control of more than
250 parameters• Diagnostics – data
acquisition and analysis
• Safety systems
MSL, future projects
• There is a strong need for accelerator physics in Sweden
• ESS, MAX IV
• Stockholm-Uppsala FEL, design report
• Continuous development of DESIREE
• Projects abroad
Conclusion
• MSL, with its combined resources, expects to continue to play an important role in accelerator physics and technology in Sweden and abroad.
• MSL has the ambition to establish a group at the Physics Department at SU with both research and education in the field of accelerator physics and technology.
