TIIE RIVOIRE COLLECTION Given a tendency in a developing society for the action to

mig-ratc from the center to the fringes of society, archivists in a mature society such as ours would do well to give due attention to what is happening on the fringes. The value of such information has been demonstrated during our efforts to document challenges to the governance of Cornell University from 1965 to 1975. University governance during that period shifted in the direction of the most pronounced fringe behavior with the establishment of the University Senate, but the vast documentation which emanated from the Senate reveals little about the character and intensity of t~_e fringe behavior which impinged upon it. Our collection of hand-outs and posters from campus and near campus

1/1/fO

provides a context for the study of Senate action and inaction.

Toda~, a~d for the past twenty years, thanks to Alice and J~hn R!vo1r~ we have been collecting material from the fnn~cs m midtown Manhattan. The Rivoires began col~ectmg to add to our extensive collection of political Amer!ca~a. As the Holtzman flyer in the sample illustration md1cat_es, political material is still a component of their colle~t1~g. T~e. bulk, ho~ever, now consists of handouts ~~at mv1t~ rehg1ous expenence or solicit customers for facil-1t1es offcnn~ sexual gr~ti~cation. In the interests of precise documentation the R1voires are recording the date and place of distribution on material obtained in the streets.
