letter, 23 November 1949 to Reed from Mrs. Frank Garback of Sinclairville, New York

Mrs. Garback writes to inform Congressman Reed that she is "deeply opposed" to recognition of the Communist Government of the Peoples' Republic of China

letter (copy), 27 June 1950 from Reed to Rev. Timothy Stockmeyer, C.P.

Reed is deeply opposed to recognizing the PRC also. Further, he has "little faith" in the U.N., as it is the creature of Alger Hiss, a traitor to the U.S., Reed says

letter, 2 1 June 1950 from Rev. Stockmeyer to Reed, asking Reed to prevent recognition of the PRC

open letter from Ruth Campbell Bigelow, entitled "An American Woman Speaks Out." She says that Stalin wants the Americans to refrain from using the veto power on the motion to seat China in the U.N. She claims to refrain would be treasonous.

Letter, 7 January 1950, from Frederick C. McKee, Chairman Pro-Tem of the Committee to Defend America by Aiding Anti- Communist China, to Reed. McKee encloses a copyright letter sent to the Secretary of State. (Dean Acheson) He asks Acheson to define clearly the China policies of the State Department

letter (copy), 6 December 1949, from Reed to Miss Anna S. Glase of Jamestown, New York. Reed is against communism, which the "New Deal coddled."

letter, 5 December 1949 from Anna S. Glase to Reed. "I want you to vote against recognition of 'Red China,' not to extend aid to Tito, but U to recognize Spain who stopped Red Russia from marching to our United States of America."

letter (copy), 23 November 1949 from Reed to Miss Pauline Blank, of Cuba, New York (same as letter to Glase)

letter. 2 1 November 1949 from Pauline Blank to Heed "There is such a thing as honor among nations" - we shouldn-t give "support to a regime that knows no mercy"

letter, 25 November 1949, from Francis Bauer of Bigelow's, to Reed - same as above

letter, 21 November 1949, from Mrs. Frank Hyam of hnkirk, New York, to Reed, opposing recognition

letter (copy), 21 November 1949 from Reed to Mrs. May W. Mulholland of Dunkirk, same as letter to Miss Glase

telegram, from Mrs. Mary Mulholland of Dunkirk, to Reed, "Two hundred thirty-six Catholic daughters of. . . Dunkirk" ask that he oppose recognition

The rest of the folder is basically the same - letters from concerned citizens in late 1949, early 1950, and standardized replies from Reed. One letter, from Marguerite Childs of Cuba, New York, proposed that "the only honest way to present the question" was to wait for the open debate on the floor of the 1J.N. She received the same form reply as the others.

Box 23, Folders 11-13, "Hong Fort Chew Case"

Hong Fort Chew was an immigrant who was to be deported. He had served briefly in the Army during World War I1 but was discharged (honorably) due to language difficulties. He could not prove that his father, a local laundryman in Dunkirk, was, in fact, his father, because of the Chinese custom of not keeping birth records.

various petitions that the yang man be allowed to stay labelled "Clergy," "Doctors," and so forth are included. There is, however, no indication of the outcome of the affair.
