Acknowledgements
Athletics Tasmania acknowledges the ongoing efforts and commitment made by its officials,
coaches, volunteers and administrators. Our sport could not be successful without their
contribution. Also we would like to acknowledge the efforts of our athletes and assure them that
we will make every effort to give them the best support and competition that we can in the
coming year.
Special recognition must go to our Government Partner the Tasmanian Government whose
financial contribution to our organisation is most welcome through Communities, Sport and
Recreation Tasmania.
Our parent body, Athletics Australia, often in partnership with the Australian Sports
Commission, also supported us in 2015/16 – including national insurance and state performance
programs, and the continued development of the national digital platform.
The major sponsors of the Tasmanian Marathon Festival, Cadbury, along with many other
sponsors and supporters, helped us deliver the thirty third edition of this continually growing
event.
We thank all our sponsors and supporters for their generous assistance:
Sport and Recreation Tasmania | Cadbury
Athletics Australia| Tasmanian Institute of Sport
Hobart City Council | Allcare Physiotherapy | Brighton Council | Gold Coast Airport Marathon
Launceston City Council | Jackson Motor Company | The Running Edge | iRUN.org.au

The media has continued to be most generous in the interest shown and the coverage given to
our sport, our athletes and events. We thank the many individuals and organisations who have
supported us in this regard over the period of this report.

President’s and Board Report 2015-16
During 2015/2016 Athletics Tasmania had a net gain in registration numbers. Registrations in the
South of the state were very strong once again. In particular, out of stadium registrations
continue to be very positive. In the North, registration numbers are improving and in the North
West there has been a slight improvement. From national championship level through to local
inter club competition was strong.
Performances were strong with Hamish Peacock representing Australia at the IAAF World
Championships in China. Deon Kenzie competed at the International Paralympic World
Championships in Doha where he won a bronze medal. Jack Hale competed in the World Youth
Championships and Samantha Lind was a member of the Australian team at the World Relay
Championships. From national championship level through to local inter club competition was
strong.
I will report, as I did last year, against the nine objectives in our Strategic Plan 2011-2014,
expanding on these and other achievements and outlining the challenges we continue to face in
remaining relevant and becoming more appealing to existing and potential constituencies.
Athletics Tasmania was due to develop a new Strategic Plan for 2015 – 2018. However, after
consultation with CSRT and AA, this has been postponed for one year. Athletics Tasmania is
waiting for the full AA Strategic Plan to be developed and released before developing the AT plan.
It is important the AT strategic plan aligns, in the main, with the AA plan. The Board will undertake
this process with the guidance of the AT Executive Officer and CSRT. Branches, clubs, athletes
and officials will be heavily involved in the process.
1. Re-establishing athletics as an activity of choice for Tasmanians
It was pleasing to note solid competition from under age competition through to Masters’
competition continued to be strong across the state.
The Masters’ competition is growing at a rapid rate. There is a unique opportunity to build the
Masters’ numbers, particularly in the north of the state, when the North West Coast host the
Australian Masters’ Games late in 2017. This coming year will present an excellent opportunity
for clubs to actively engage in recruiting athletes into the sport as Masters’ athletes. The South
has done this well and hopefully the North and North West can follow.
It remains the position of the AT Board that AT clubs need to work closely with Little Athletics
clubs to maintain the flow of athletes through to athletics conducted by Athletics Tasmania. Some
Founded 1902 | Incorporated 1981 11 | P a g e
clubs are doing this exceptionally well but all clubs need to understand this process is
exceptionally important. The flow of young athletes from the Little Athletics program is the life
blood of AT. With the reduction in AT registration fees it is hoped that many more athletes from
LAT will continue their athletics involvement as members of AT. Clubs need to sell this message
to all the LAT clubs in their vicinity. Strong and active recruitment is required to see many more
LAT athletes move on and join AT. Many LAT athletes see their athletics involvement as ending
when they finish in LAT. We need to change that viewpoint.
AT continued to work very closely with both the public and private school systems to conduct
inter-school athletic activity at both primary and secondary level. This included delivering support
and service to SATIS, Southern High Schools, Northern High Schools, North West High Schools
and PSST carnivals as well as continuing to deliver its own schools’ events in cross country, track
and field and most importantly the SKO competitions around the state. While AT engages
thousands of high and primary school athletes during the year, we are still not seeing a strong
enough flow of these students into becoming members of AT.
But as noted earlier in this report, the lowering of the AT registration fees may hopefully
encourage many of these athletes to register. The lowering of the AT registration fees hopefully
will also attract athletes from winter type sports to engage in our sport and become members of
AT.
The Cadbury Marathon Festival once again continued to service the needs of the recreational
runners around Tasmania and Australia. It was once again very successful and attracted strong
numbers. The variety of events on offer is an excellent model and allows for strong growth.
Our media and communication strategy continues to achieve outstanding outcomes with
excellent recognition in print, radio and television and a broad social media program. The last
year in particular was hugely successful given the unbelievable interest in the exploits of the
record breaking feats of Hamish Peacock, Jack Hale and Deon Kenzie.
2. Developing athletes’, coaches’, officials’, administrators’ and volunteers’ level of skill, knowledge and competence in athletics
This is an area where AT needs to continue to work to make sure there is a successful outcome
with this objective. Without coaches and officials the sport will struggle. Upgrading the coaches
and officials already qualified continues to proceed and a number of coaching courses were
conducted during the last year. These courses resulted in a good number of new coaches. The
Founded 1902 | Incorporated 1981 12 | P a g e
challenge once these coaches are qualified is making sure they take an active role in coaching.
AT need to make sure these new coaches are provided with suitable assistance and mentoring.
3. Motivating and recognising coaches, officials, administrators and volunteers at all levels of athletics who provide quality training and support environments
Two clubs remain to undergo the development plan process. It is anticipated that by the end of
2016 all clubs will have a development plan in place. CSRT will also work closely with AT in
developing the skills of club officials.
Service given to the sport in Tasmania continues to be recognised and appreciated through the
Association’s awards system and beyond.
The Board is still working on the Athletics Tasmania Hall of Fame to acknowledge national
representatives and champions at open level. It is anticipated that this project will be launched
in late 2017.
4. Providing quality competition and participation opportunities at all levels
Quality competition and participation was provided by AT and by the branches on a weekly basis
throughout the year.
After a number of years of hosting many national events, the last year was an opportunity for the
very hard working branches and clubs, along with their volunteers and officials, to have a break.
AT conducted the Briggs meet with great success. The introduction of Nitro to the athletics scene
this summer will hopefully see a resurgence in the popularity of athletics in Tasmania. The Briggs
meet will continue to attract excellent fields. AT will need to make use of the publicity that
athletics will receive during the Olympic Games to attract new athletes and fans to our sport.
Wayne Fletcher and Kev Morse continued their fine work in managing our records and rankings
programs which are now well established and working efficiently.
AT continues to work closely with recreational running operators in Tasmania to assist in the
quality delivery of and support for their events. The Tasmanian 10km road running
championships were very successfully delivered in co-operation with Events South at the
Launceston Ten.
AA has formed an alliance with Park Run, which may well benefit AT once the full details are
known.
Founded 1902 | Incorporated 1981 13 | P a g e
AT is also working very closely with the newly formed Tasmania Road Runners Inc. This is an area
where AT will continue to try and develop strong links.
5. Capitalising on the high quality of facility development for athletics in each of Tasmania’s three regions
The anticipated redevelopment of the St Leonards track this coming summer places Tasmania in
the position of having three excellent and newly refurbished tracks.
Along with a number of other changes, AT is now in an excellent position to attract new members
given that our facilities are in excellent shape.
AT is very thankful for support given to athletics infrastructure in Tasmania by the Hobart City
Council, the Launceston City Council and the Central Coast Council.
6. Building relationships with kindred bodies, the general community, government at all levels, the education system, the business community and the media
AT has maintained regular contact and strong relationships with government during the year. In
particular, AT has worked very closely with CSRT to develop a new governance structure and a
new constitution. The new constitution (with the new governance structure) will be considered
at the 2016 AGM.
Like many sports and organisations, sponsorship has been difficult to obtain. This will be a major
focus for 2016/2017.
Under the strong and effective leadership of Aaron Humphries (selection) and Rosemary
Coleman (team management), our state teams program continues to be successful and we have
supported all AA and SSA championships with excellent outcomes both in terms of medals and
personal best results. We appreciate the skills and commitment of the growing pool of talent
serving as state team selectors and officials.
After 18 years as State Team Manager Rosemary Coleman has retired from the position.
Rosemary was awarded the President’s Award at the annual Athlete of the Year Awards function
for her outstanding service.

I would like to thank the AT board members, AT officers and team officials for their contribution
during this past year.

Finance Director’s Report 2015-16
Year ended 31 March 2016
Please refer to the separately presented Financial Statements.
The Athletics Tasmania Incorporated Financial Report for the year ended 31 March 2016 is tabled
for the Annual General Meeting.
In the opinion of the Board the financial report shows a true and fair view of the financial position
of Athletics Tasmania as at 31 March 2016 and its performance for the financial year.
Total income of the Association during the 2016 financial year decreased by 12.7% or $68,610 to
be $472,511 ($541,121 FY15). This decline in income was due predominately from the reduction
in AT event income (down $73,813) generated in the previous financial year when Penguin
successfully hosted the School Sport Australia 12 Years and Under National Track & Field
Championships at the end of 2014 and also to a lesser extent some reduced income due to the
shortened track season caused by the track resurfacing of the Domain Athletics Centre in Hobart
from late February 2016.
Increased numbers saw registration and affiliation fee income increased by 13.7% or
approximately $10,000 compared to the previous corresponding period. This was however offset
by a $8,300 decline in sponsorship income. Focus next year will be on identifying and attracting
a key name sponsor to replace the long running support of IGA Supermarkets.
Whilst income was down on the previous Financial Year, AT's total expenses also decreased in
line ensuring a net surplus was achieved for the year.
The operating result of the Association for the 2016 financial year amounted to a net surplus of
$5,685 ($18,869 FY15).
The Statement of Financial Position shows Total Current Assets increasing by 12.0% to $390,790
as at 31st March 2016 (up from $348,858 on the previous year). Net Assets increased by 0.8% to
$743,122 as at 31st March 2016 (up from $737,437 on the previous year).
Pleasingly AT's overall cash position (note 2) for the year has increased by an additional $22,000
to $261,664 ensuring an ongoing strong financial position for the Association moving forward.

No significant changes in the nature of Athletic Tasmania’s state of affairs occurred during the
financial year. Crowe Horwath, as Athletics Tasmania’s external auditors, completed the signed
declaration of the Financial Report on 19th July 2016.
I would also like to thank Macquarie Accounting and in particular Darren Alomes for your past
support and long association with Athletics Tasmania

Executive Officer’s Report 2015-16
The 2015/2016 report is my first as Executive Officer of Athletics Tasmania. It has been a year of
firsts and reacquainting with old faces, as well as meeting new people and understanding what
roles they play in this organisation. It has been important, over the past year, to begin identifying
what processes and procedures are required in order to provide the best possible environment
for the successful running of athletics in Tasmania.
A new strategic plan has been at the forefront of Athletics Tasmania’s work over the past twelve
months and the Athletics Tasmania Board have been very committed to working with Community
Sport and Recreation to begin a governance and structure review. A successful planning day was
held in October 2015, which resulted in the establishment of a Steering Committee.
The review is being conducted with guidance from the Athletics Tasmania governance and
structure steering committee that consists of members from the board of Athletics Tasmania,
Athletics Australia, the Australian Sports Commission, and Communities, Sport and Recreation.
The review expands on discussions and planning undertaken by the Athletics Tasmania Board in
2015 to adopt contemporary structures and good governance structures. Community
engagement has also been very important, with a questionnaire about structure and governance
distributed to all members of the athletics community.
With so much forward thinking and planning for Athletics Tasmania, there are many people who
have shown tremendous dedication over many years to the sport of athletics, not the least of
which is Rosemary Coleman. Rosie has recently retired as the State Team Manager for athletics
after sixteen years, whilst also serving as a manager for eighteen years. The Australian Junior
Nationals, held in Perth in March 2016, was Rosie’s final trip as State Team Manager. Rosie has
also coached over one hundred athletes over this period, with several national medallists. She is
also an experienced official, working at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney as an official in sports
medicine and at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne as an official in the post-event
area. It is her interest in pursuing further opportunities in officiating that has driven Rosie’s
decision to step down as the State Team Manager. She will be officiating at the National Juniors
and Australian All Schools to allow her to substantiate her position for selection as an official at
the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. We thank Rosie for her dedication and
service, wishing her every success in her officiating, whilst also knowing that she is not lost to us.
Her support has been greatly appreciated and we look forward to her continued involvement in
the sport of athletics in Tasmania.
Founded 1902 | Incorporated 1981 18 | P a g e
As part of becoming a contemporary organisation, position descriptions for the roles of State
Team Manager and Assistant Managers were developed and applications invited for these roles,
requiring applicants to submit Expressions of Interest detailing their previous experience.
An exciting development has been the digital platform going live in September 2015. The
Athletics Tasmania website was finally updated and provides a visually appealing portal that is
easy to navigate. Although there has been plenty of traffic to the site, this will always be a work
in progress as all sporting organisations work to maximise their digital presence. Thanks must go
to Alison Kelleher, who has been extremely proactive in our migration to the new digital platform
and we appreciate her continued involvement. Athletics Australia’s support in this transition was
also invaluable and we thank them for their assistance in this. Thanks must go to all those who
have contributed to our social media platform, as we recognise that social media, and the use of
Facebook in particular, is becoming increasingly important for any organisation as an invaluable
tool to reach out to the community, and developing comprehensive structures and procedures
around this is a priority for Athletics Tasmania in coming months. Dominic Anastasio, Social
Media Coordinator for Athletics Tasmania, will lead the development of best practice in this area
into the future.
I am indebted to Athletics Australia and all other Member Associations for their support over the
past year. They are fully aware that we are an organisation that is volunteer-based, and often
don’t have the resources available that is present in larger organisations. Communities, Sport
and Recreation have also been hugely supportive in providing their expertise to Athletics
Tasmania, in particular our client managers Sarah Davidson and Leigh Oswin.
It has been exciting to have Athletics Tasmania’s brand displayed on local television state-wide
through a joint venture with the TACC. The advertising campaign has run for a lengthy period of
time and not only put the Athletics Tasmania branding front and centre, but featured local
athletic talent as the actors. This was a wonderful opportunity to be inclusive and promote our
sport.
My thanks must go to all those who have provided me with their unconditional support in my
first year as Executive Officer of Athletics Tasmania. In particular I would like to acknowledge
Shelley Miller and Wayne Fletcher’s administrative support, which has been invaluable. I
understand how challenging it is to wear so many hats and the hands-on hours given by Wayne
have contributed to the day-to-day functioning of Athletics Tasmania I am grateful to the Board
Founded 1902 | Incorporated 1981 19 | P a g e
of Athletics Tasmania for identifying the need to review the structure of the organisation to
provide me with clarity moving forward.

Athletics South Report 2015-16
It is pleasing to again report that Athletics South enjoyed another successful year, with good
participation numbers turning out for both Cross Country and Track and Field programs. Cross
Country and fun runs have taken the community’s interest and it is pleasing to see increased
participation across the board.
Congratulations to:
Athletes achieving one or more personal best performances,
Athletes gaining State / National selection,
Coaches for your continued encouragement and development of athletes, and
Officials and helpers who ensure weekly interclub / cross country and other yearly meets are conducted successfully.
It’s been an outstanding year for our elite athletes, with excellent numbers being selected to
State and National teams. Congratulations to all, we at Athletics South are fully supportive and
proud of your achievements.
As we await for the Olympic team announcement for Rio, there are a number of Athletics South
athletes in the mix for selection. Best wishes to all.
It is impressive also to see a wealth of junior talent emerging, and these promising athletes are
among the nation’s finest. We will watch your development with interest and support.
For the second year in a row, athletics has enjoyed the media spotlight both in the field and on
the track.
Our new club, University of Tasmania Athletics Club has made an impressive entry into athletics.
Congratulations on your achievement to date, and we wish you well into the future.
Board members have worked tirelessly to provide athletes with every opportunity, using the best
equipment available. Thank you to all Board members for your dedication, support and
enthusiasm.

To all sponsors, we thank you. To our track and Field gold sponsor, Bennett’s Petroleum, and to
our Cross Country gold sponsor, the Running Edge, thank you both for your ongoing support to
athletics in Southern Tasmania. Also thank you to our bronze sponsor, RSM Insurance Brokers,
and to the Hobart City Council for providing a national standard facility. Without all sponsors, our
athletes would not have the opportunity to compete weekly at an excellent venue with quality
equipment.
Our urgent plea, Help Required. There is an urgent need for more helpers and officials to come
on board to ensure the smooth running of weekly meets. Training will be provided. Please
consider.

Northern Branch Report (NBAAT) 2015-16
The 2015-2016 Track and Field season saw us run our interclub programs very successfully in
conjunction with Masters on Wednesday nights for the first half of the season together with a
small contingent of school students trialing the Track and Field School series. We hope to
continue this relationship with Masters and also start to work more closely with South
Launceston Little Athletics to help with transition to senior athletics.
We successfully hosted the Tasmanian Open Track and Field Championships and the Masters
Championships in March and hope we are able to do so again.
We look forward to having the track resurfaced at the end of our next season and this will open
our facility up to host further national competitions as we have done so in the past.
Thanks are extended once again this season to our volunteers Merrilyn and Alan Llewellyn who
capably operated the canteen for numerous schools events, and our Interclub meets. The
canteen is our biggest fundraiser and is important that we support the Llewellyns where we can.
We are moving towards opening the canteen at all school events to capture the opportunities to
raise further funds.
Thank you to my small but wonderfully dedicated committee, particularly Wim Vaessen, Susan
McClenaghan, Tania Freestone, Kay Knee, Michelle Heron, Sandra Speers, Ross Lovell, Laura
Downie, Brian James, Ferdie Kroon, Frank Knott, Mark Smith and Shane Wagner for their time,
support and tireless efforts. A special thank you to Brett Gillow (he is not on NBAAT but NACB
member) who has been working tirelessly with the Council with ground maintenance and, more
importantly, with the track resurfacing.
Thanks are also extended to all those athletes and parents who attended working bees and our
Bunnings BBQ fundraiser.
Congratulations to all athletes who participated this season and reached new personal best
standards of performance. Also congratulations to all those athletes who achieved state and/or
national representation.
Shane Wagner was awarded the NBAAT Bob Beck Memorial award this year for his dedication to
branch activities, weekly competition and assisting with various maintenance matters around the
arena.

Tasmanian Athletic League Report 2015-16
It is with pleasure that on behalf of the Tasmanian Athletic League Inc. I present our Annual
Report for the season 2015-2016.
Our season commenced in the middle of November and concluded in the middle of January.
During that time there were ten carnivals held. They were organised by the Professional Cross
Country Club of Tasmania, Launceston Carnival Committee, Central Coast Council with the
assistance of the TAL, Rosebery AC, Devonport AC, Latrobe Bicycle Race Club, Burnie AC, Hobart
AC and St Helens AC.
We are extremely lucky to have a small but hard working group of people that keep the League
running. Glenn Foster is our Secretary/Treasurer. Glenn carries out his duties in an efficient and
timely manner. He not only keeps the Council, Clubs and Athletes up to date with minutes and
results from the Carnivals after they are held but also maintains our website. Glenn also collates
all the online entries as they come in for each carnival and forwards them onto the handicappers
for them to do their job. We are grateful for the time Glenn spends in both roles and look forward
to his continued support in the coming season.
Another important part of the Carnival Series is the handicapping of the events. This year Steve
Robinson continued in the role as Sprint Handicapper and Glenn Foster again did the Distance
Handicapping. As can be appreciated, these roles are both time consuming and demanding and
many hours are spent researching the athletes and their performances. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank both Steve and Glenn for the excellent work that they did this season and
we look forward to their continued support in these roles again next season. We are again
working hard to find somebody that may be interested in the Distance Handicapping Role to take
some of the work load off Glenn. Once again, thank you both for your work this season.
On Carnival days we assist the Clubs with many Officials. These range from stewards, starters,
entry confirmation officials and photo finish. We are extremely lucky to have Phil Clayton and
his team from the North West Athletic Club that travel the state doing the timing for all the
athletic events. This not only assists the clubs enormously with not having to supply as many
judges, it also assists the League and the Handicappers having a full set of results at the end of
the meeting. We would like to thank Phil and his team for their continued support of the Carnival
Series and look forward to working with them again next season.

This season we saw a change in the race calling. Xavier Williams came on board after the
retirement of Brian Paine. I would like to thank Xavier for his work this season and hopefully he
will back next season to assist us. Also over the major Christmas Carnivals Grant Penney worked
with us doing the calling of the Gifts and Miles. We thank Grant for his work over the Christmas
period and I am sure he will support the upcoming Carnival Season again if required.
I would like to thank the League Council and the Runners’ & Trainers’ Representatives for their
work during the season. Also to our Patron, Alan Waddle OAM, I would like to thank you for your
continued support of the League. This season was a sad one for us with the passing of our Life
Member and past Patron Bevan Hutton and past Handicapper Andrew Willis. On behalf of the
League we pass our sincere condolences on to both families. They will be missed by us all.
To all our Award Winners this season I congratulate you all on the excellent results that you
achieved.
I would like to take this opportunity to encourage new runners to try the carnivals.
In closing I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in running the carnival series
and wish you all a very successful 2016-2017 season.

Tasmanian Masters Association Report 2015-16
It has been another successful year for Tasmanian Masters Athletics. Membership totalled 285,
which is the second highest on record, only surpassed by the 296 in 2013/14 when the National
Championships were held in Tasmania. A feature during the past year was the influx of new
members in the 30 to 40 year old category. Not only was membership high but participation in
most aspects of our competitions was again strong.
The AMA Half Marathon Championship was held by TMA in conjunction with Cadbury for the
sixth time in January 2016. A field of 63 participated, including representatives from all States
and Territories. The best age-graded performances were achieved by Victoria’s Lavinia Petrie
(W72) 99.47% and Queensland’s Ron Peters (M62) 92.18%. Several Tasmanian half marathon
age-group records were also achieved.
Cross country and road events attracted large numbers of participants. Members continue to
compete in the Winter Competitions provided by the affiliates of Athletics Tasmania. Members
also travelled far and wide to participate in national and international fun runs, half marathons
and marathons. The TMA Road Championships and Cross Country Championships were also well
supported. There were 38 starters in the Road Championships at Campbell Town. The Westcott
Perpetual Award for the best age-graded performance in the Road Championships was won by
(M60) Peter Lyden with 81.60%. The Cross Country Championships at Pontville attracted a large
field of 49. David O’Brien (M50) returned the best age-graded performance with 80.18%. A small
but select group of members participated in Race Walking club events as well as AT and TMA
Road Walk Championships over 5km and 10km.
The Track and Field season was highly successful. Participation on a Wednesday night in both the
North and South was arguably the best ever. For the first time in many years, TMA’s Northern
Branch combined with the Northern Branch of Athletics Tasmania to conduct joint meetings for
the first half of the season. There was an excellent turnout of 72 Masters’ participants for the
State Track & Field Championships in Launceston, again held in collaboration with Athletics
Tasmania. The track distance events continue to attract excellent numbers and are a major
strength of TMA. There were 17 participants in the 10,000m and 19 participants in the 5,000m.
The Graeme Cruise Award for the best age-graded performance in the State Championships was
won for the fourth consecutive year by Janet Upcher (W69) with another world class percentage
of 91.78%. The Masters Athlete of the Championships was awarded to new member John Howe
(M31). John not only had success in the Masters 60m but also won the open 100m and 200m.
Founded 1902 | Incorporated 1981 27 | P a g e
John set M30-34 records in all 3 events. TMA’s Northern Branch conducted the Track & Field
Pentathlon Championships with 11 keen and versatile athletes taking part. A total of 66
Tasmanian Masters records were set during the year.
A team of 25 athletes represented TMA at the annual Australian Masters Athletics
Championships in Adelaide. It was a hugely successful event for TMA members who achieved 24
Gold Medals, 26 Silver Medals and 15 Bronze Medals.
There was strong competition for the annual TMA awards. The winners were: Female Athlete of
the Year – Francesca Smith; Male Athlete of the Year – Michael Stevenson; Sprints/Hurdles
Athlete of the Year – Michael Stevenson; Middle Distance/Steeple Athlete of the Year – Francesca
Smith; Distance Athlete of the Year – Gerry Oldfield; Jumps/Multi Events Athlete of the Year –
Cathy McKeown; Throws Athlete of the Year – Todd Davey. The Jim Burr Memorial Award for
service to TMA was awarded to Neil Hammersley from TMA’s Northern Branch.
The focus of many members is now on Perth for the World Masters Athletics Championships
from 26 October to 6 November 2016. It is expected that a big contingent of TMA members will
be heading west. We are actively encouraging all athletes over the age of 35 to take advantage
of this World Championship event, which is effectively in our own backyard. Also of interest to
members will be the National Masters Championships to be conducted in Darwin for the first
time in June 2017.
As always our challenge is to maintain and even expand our membership base and to provide a
broad range of activities for our members. There is recognition within our ranks that we have a
major contribution to make as part of the overall athletic family.

Track and Field Report 2015-16
The AT track and field program in 2015/16 was in the two previous years with the Track and Field
Championships divided in two by age groupings with all the under-age groupings on one weekend
in February in Hobart prior to the Junior Nationals and just before the track was ripped up for a
much needed and appreciated re-surfacing. The open and masters’ championships were in
Launceston on the more traditional date at the end of the local season. Again some under age
athletes took advantage of being able to contest both their own age group and if they are ready
for it, also the open championships but there were fewer than in the two years before as many
were departing for the National Age Championships the following day. Numbers and
performance levels indicate this is a good solution for the present, especially with reduced
intrastate competition opportunities but a return to a consolidated championships over 3 days is
also under consideration.
The Track and Field Commission again took the decisions not to conduct championships were
entries had been poor the previous season, such as the additional relay events. The 10000m walk
was however returned to the schedule and we took the opportunity to join with Little Athletics
Tasmania in staging our respective combined events championships together which worked well.
Entries in masters championships events grew and make an ever increasing positive impact on
the AT championships program
The Tasmanian All Schools continued as a medal competition in 2015-16 and again included the
primary events in this way. The meet was successfully held at Hobart in late October and included
the selection trials for the Australian 12 and under Track and Field Championships as well as for
the Australian All Schools.
The Australian Athletics Tour declined further in 2015-16, to the point where is has now been
discontinued. This is disappointing for a program that has long provided domestic competition
opportunities for both the established and developing athlete sectors. The challenge will now be
for State and Territory associations to come up with their own products and to enhance the
traditional state championships. But the Briggs Meet was still staged in 2015 as a competition
opportunity for visiting and Tasmanian athletes. Despite only a low budget allocation from its
own coffers, AT staged a good event full of personal bests and excellent meet records to Ryan
Gregson (1500m) and a world ranked effort by Damien Birkenhead (shot put).
Again our practice of confirming self-funding athletes at an early stage paid off with more than
100 interstate athletes again covering their own travel and accommodation costs to participate
Founded 1902 | Incorporated 1981 29 | P a g e
in Briggs. We included a series of underage sprint races which were well received and with each
winner receiving the IAAF commemorative book from the 2015 Beijing World Championships.
AT continued to increase its support of schools track and field, with all high school competition
around the state now supported directly by the sport. However one aspect, our own SKO
program was almost non-existent. It is a high priority for improvement in 2016/17.
With a new registration system in place for 2016/17 which places a higher emphasis on lower
base fees and “paying to play”, the opportunity will be there for new events both for existing and
potential members. Thinking caps on please!!

State Performance Report 2015-16
Tasmania was represented by Hamish Peacock at the World Championships in 2015 and Jack Hale
in the World Youth Championships. Hamish maintained his form to win the National
Championships in 2016 and achieve an Olympic Qualifier in the javelin in Kawasaki in May. Jack
continued to break state and national junior records throughout the domestic season,
culminating in World Junior Selection in the 100m and 4 x 100m for 2016, plus a silver medal in
the 100m at the National Open Championships. This medal was the first Tasmanian medal in over
100 years in the 100m event.
Deon Kenzie achieved a bronze medal in the T38 1500m at the Para World Championships in
2015 after breaking the world record in Boston in June. Deon continued his record-breaking ways
with another world record in February 2016, which confirmed his selection in the Rio Olympic
Games.
Stephanie Stigwood achieved a number of Olympic qualifiers in the 20km walk over the domestic
season and represented Australia in the World Cup in Rome during May 2106.
After making the final at the Australian Championships in the 400m, Sam Lind was selected in the
Australian 4 x 400m team to tour Japan in May 2016.
The TIS would like to congratulate the personal coaches of our Australian Representative Athletes
for 2015-16: Evan Peacock, Wayne Mason, Mike Gunson and Daniel Coleman.
2015-16 saw the reintroduction of the Talent Identification Development Program (TID),
coordinated by Sonia Cowle. This program underpins the current TTP program, providing
athletes and coaches with performance progression and support and as a pathway to the TTP
and other programs run by the TIS. The 2015-16 TID program provided educational opportunities
for athletes and coaches, with two event group training sessions also being held later in the year,
once the program was up and running. Seven athletes participated in the TID program and there
were four squad coaches also included. All athletes and coaches embraced the opportunity to
widen their network within the sport and improve their knowledge and skills relating to their
event(s). This program gave athletes and coaches alike a taste for what is required for high
performance athletics. Looking forward to next season, the coming year will see an increased
number of squad clinics spread throughout the year.

The Target Talent Program (TTP) identified and supported the next generation of rising stars with training
and education sessions for the athletes and coaches throughout the year. The pole vault and steeple
events allowed our Tasmanian athletes to shine at the National Junior level with medals from Matt
Hosie, Raphaela Corney, Ebony Webb, Harvey Chilcott and Getasew Ferguson. Courtney Stanley; 400H,
Ruby Smee; 3km, Rachel Hosie and Julia Direen; hammer all medalled in their respective events and
displayed the breadth and depth of our upcoming Tasmanian junior stars.

Coaching Report 2015-16
There are a number of areas that have been targeted for development in the field of coaching
during the 2015-16 season. A vision and plan for coaching has been established,
recommendations from which should be considered for the upcoming year and beyond. Details
of the coaching calendar have been made available, with the support of Athletics Australia, on
the Athletics Tasmania website. This has provided numerous benefits; coaching courses have
been promoted well in advance, interested parties have been able to access all information and
apply to join courses online and the availability of a variety of courses has broadened significantly.
In the past, Athletics Tasmania have offered several Level 1 Community Athletics Coaching
courses. It is hoped that leading into the coming year, through the ability to promote a variety
of course options more visibly via the website, a larger variety of courses at different levels can
be offered and it is hoped that an increasing number of interested people can participate and
upskill at different levels according to their interests.
2015 saw the introduction of the IAAF Kids (Sporting Schools) Upskilling Course, which allows
coaches to deliver the Australian Sports Commission Sporting Schools program in primary
schools. Two participants gained accreditation through this course, which is pleasing, and it is
hoped that others will take advantage of this program moving forward.
There are currently 146 coaches in Tasmania. Through the identification of a focus direction for
coaching in the state and the data that we now have available relating to our coaching ranks, we
are more readily able to identify areas to target for future coaching opportunities, for instance
encouraging more women and more young people to gain coaching accreditation.
Having enthusiastically developed a vision for the direction of coaching in Tasmania, along with
identifying the support mechanisms required for newly accredited and established coaches alike,
Nicky Ristrom has been unable to continue in this role. As an organisation, Athletics Tasmania
will benefit greatly from the ideas and planning put in place by Nicky. I thank Nicky for her hard
work and for laying the groundwork for the online coaching calendar to be implemented. I also
wish to thank Blair Taylor at Athletics Australia, without whom we would not have the resources
to bring coaching plans to fruition. His ongoing support is invaluable.

Athletes’ Commissioner’s Report 2015-16
In season 2015/2016 Tasmania had a number of athletes representing Australia at a number of
different championships all across the world including:
World Championships in Beijing, China.
IPC World Championships in Doha, Qatar.
World Relay Championships in Nassau, Bahamas.
World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea.
World Youth Championships in Cali, Columbia.
Oceania Area Championships in Cairns, Australia.
At national level, Tasmania was once again represented strongly in both open and junior age
groups. The National Open Championships held at Olympic Park in Sydney provided some
excellent results, with numerous medals and top 8 placings. The National All Schools were held
at Albert Park in Melbourne and the National Junior Championships were held in Perth this
season and both championships saw the Tasmanian teams again produce great results both on
the track and in the field. Numerous medals were won and state records broken. Top 8 placings
for the TTP program was the aim for the small team of athletes that travelled to Perth for the
junior championships and they didn’t disappoint.
Hobart-based athletes were thrown a bit of a curve ball at the back end of the season with the
track being closed for a resurface. The athletes were forced out onto the grass oval at the
crossroads. This took place prior to state championships as well as both national junior and
senior championships, which gave athletes a challenge for training. State Championships were
held in Launceston this season and although it ran well it did suffer from a lack of numbers due
to the National Junior Championships being held so close. With most athletes flying out to Perth
on the Monday, quite a few decided to give the championships a miss to stay fresh for the
National Juniors.
Moving into the 2016/2017 season there is a lot to look forward to; the track in Hobart has been
completed and athletes are now training on a brand new track, which is getting great raps from
the majority of the community. There are whispers of the St Leonards’ track being resurfaced in
the near future, which would be great for the northern athletes. With the Olympics upon us and
Founded 1902 | Incorporated 1981 35 | P a g e
with some local hopefuls there is a lot to look forward to for the athletic community. We’re
hopeful that the brand new surface in Hobart and the ability to run both ways on the track will
attract a lot of attention from the interstate heavyweights for this coming season’s Briggs
Athletics Classic.

Out of Stadium Report 2015-16
Out of stadium events continue to experience growth overall, as does recreational running, and
we continue to work with organisers of recreational running events to encourage participation
and increase opportunities for Athletics Tasmania representation.
The 2015 B&E Launceston Ten, held on a very chilly day in June, incorporated both the Tasmanian
10km Road Running Championships and the Oceania 10km Road Running Championships. The
organiser’s decision to permanently include a 5km event allowed Athletics Tasmania to offer
championships in the categories of U18, U16 and U14. The Oceania component included six
individual championships – in open, under 20 and under 18 categories for men and women. This
is indicative of the high quality of this event and its ability to attract an elite field. David Thomas
and Ruth Wilson Daniels were crowned Tasmanian 10km champions at this event.
The Tasmanian Primary and Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships were again held at
Symmons Plains. The Primary event attracted 2,000 children who participated in challenging,
windy conditions. The Secondary event attracted 1,200 participants. Both days were successfully
executed with no incidents of note and positive feedback from parents and participants alike.
These events rely heavily on volunteers and Athletics Tasmania is grateful for the ongoing support
of members of the athletics community.
The Tasmanian Cross Country Championships and selection trials for the State cross country team
were held on 25 July at the Pontville Equestrian Centre. The challenging course did not deter
athletes, with 200 athletes lining up on a sunny winter’s day. Douglas Hamerlok was an
impressive winner in the Open Men, with Melanie Daniels repeating last year’s performance to
take out the top spot in the Women’s Open event.
The Cadbury Marathon, Half Marathon, JMC 10km and the Running Edge 5km continue to grow
and attract a quality field. The half marathon was outstanding, with Liam Adams breaking the
course record and seven men completing the challenging course in under 70 minutes. Feedback
from the Cadbury Marathon was unanimously positive, with many participants indicating they
would return next year. This event attracts many overseas and interstate participants and is a
fantastic showcase for Hobart in January.

2016 Cadbury Marathon Festival Report
The 33rd Cadbury Marathon was held under perfect race conditions on January 10. The event
attracted a record 2,400 participants. With over a quarter of participants from outside Tasmania,
many of whom chose to stay on for a short holiday, this event is a tourist destination for runners.
NW athlete Thomas Murton won the marathon and the State title, completing the course in
2:37:28. Alex Humphrey and Tony Brazendale took silver and bronze in the State titles
respectively. In the women’s race, Sheena Jackson of South Australia returned for her second
consecutive win in the event. The State title was claimed by Jacqui Guy.
In the half-marathon, Liam Adams was a predictable winner, breaking the course record with a
strong performance just outside his personal best. Tasmanian David Thomas retained the State
title with a second overall placing. Overall, seven men completed the course in under 70 minutes,
which is a testament to the quality of the field in this event. Tasmanian Ruth Wilson ran superbly
to win the half marathon and the State title, finishing in 1:19:34.
In the JMC 10km, James Tunbridge took line honours again after winning in 2015 and Karinna
Fyfe won the women’s event. In The Running Edge 5km, Doug Hamerlok and Ebony Webb took
line honours.
The VIP experience was again extremely popular, selling out early and attracting a waiting list.
The closure of the Cadbury Visitor Centre in December 2015 was unfortunate, but did not detract
from the day with no complaints received.
With a spectacular location lending itself to family participation, spectator involvement and post-
race relaxation, the Cadbury Marathon continues to be a highlight of the year for the out of
stadium competition. This event would not be possible, however, without the generous and
professional support of the many volunteers, to whom I am sincerely grateful. The assistance of
Tasmania Police in supporting this event is also
acknowledged and appreciated.

Race Walking Tasmania Report 2015-16
It is with great pleasure that I present Race Walking Tasmania’s report for the 2015 winter. The
Race Walking Club‘s retention has been successful, but in saying that the numbers had not risen
despite attempts to encourage more race walkers and recreational walkers.
We are blessed however with a high calibre of talented young walkers and Masters athletes, and
a wonderful group of parents who assist each week with the running of the club. Thanks you to
all those who have as sited in some small way.
Stephanie Stigwood, once again had a wonderful season, and continues to be our most successful
Tasmanian walker of all times. The season saw her first Olympic qualifier, and above all else a
Bronze Medal at the World University Games (Teams event), and many other records. Stephanie
once again was crowned Tasmanian Open Athlete of the Year, which speaks for itself. We wish
Stephanie well in her future walking adventures as she continues along her path of success with
her partner and coach Daniel Coleman. The club would also like to thank both these people for
their outstanding contribution to the mentoring and success of our younger athletes. It is great
to see the rapport that our small band of walkers have with each other.
Our 17 to U10 race walkers have also excelled this season, led by Alice Randall, a very talented
walker in her own right. Alice not only excels in her walking but we were very pleased to see that
both she and Anna Blackwell have been named in the TIS TTP group, which in itself a great
honour. Alice and Anna are now ranked in the top 6 in Australia for their age, and Alice is named
in the 3KM event as having a World No. 4 ranked position. Alice and Anna, and Arabella Phillips
teamed up with each other to win the Gold Teams medal in the U16 age group at Nationals, and
being our first Gold medal in such event we are very pleased. Bayley Campbell fished off last
season as the U13 Australian LA Champion in the 1500, so we look to the future with young man
as well.
Stephanie Stigwood, Alice Randall, Anna Blackwell, Arabella Phillips, Jasmin Excel, Bianca Excel,
Jamie Bott, Will Bottle, Bayley Campbell, Bonnie Talbot and Masters Athletes; Kirsten Bott and
Dave Moore all competed in the Australian Winter Road Race Walking Championships which
were held in Melbourne. It was great to see our much younger walkers, Will Bottle and Bonnie
Talbot doing so well, with Will, picking up a silver medal, alongside Stephanie and U10 walker
Bonnie Talbot, gold. Alice Randall, Arabella Phillips, Anna Blackwell and Bayley Campbell, all
finished in the top 8 and one of our most promising U12 walkers Jasmin Excel came 9th.
Founded 1902 | Incorporated 1981 39 | P a g e
Not to be outdone, our Masters walkers are also making a name for themselves, Kirsten Bott and
Elizabeth Leitch have been steadily improving and both walkers achieving medals at Masters
National. Our great mentor and friend David Moore together with Wayne Fletcher provide
considerable and valuable assistance to our younger members.
Alice Randall and Kirsten Bott were the recipients of our major awards at the club’s presentations
at the end of the season, and Jasmin Excel taking out the most promising walker.
With a wider representation around the State we hope to continue to expand and develop our
club, and continue on the pathway to success and enjoyment of the great sport of Race Walking.
