A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR LADY STAR OF THE SEA CHURCH

Dedicated in 1882, St. Patrick’s Cathedral located on the plot of land on North Carancahua now occupied by the American

Bank Plaza, became the Cathedral of the Diocese of Corpus Christi when the Diocese was formed in 1912. Leading

contributors to the church were Captain Miflin Kenedy, who donated land, money, and pews. Mrs. Kenedy, who donated the

sanctuary windows, and the wife of then Corpus Christi Mayor J. B. Murphy, gave the statues. The ladies of the Altar Society

gave the main altar. Various parishioners, in memory of their deceased family members, donated the other stained glass

windows. As the Diocese grew, a new cathedral was planned and was dedicated in 1940. St. Patrick’s continued to have daily

Mass for the children of Incarnate Word Academy then located nearby. In 1951, after it caught fire, the church was dismantled

and the sanctuary and main part of the nave were moved to the present location to serve the newly created “Our Lady Star of

the Sea” parish. The altar, statues and stained glass windows were saved and reinstalled in the little church. Thus a portion of

the old St. Patrick’s Cathedral remains standing, a memorial to the pioneers of Corpus Christi. Over the years, the parish has

grown to include families from all parts of Corpus Christi, Portland, Gregory, Taft, Aransas Pass and Ingleside who seek a

small “country church” atmosphere of worship and fellowship. In addition, our parishioners represent a broad cross-section of

cultures and backgrounds from various parts of the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Sunday’s Readings:

2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14 Jewish thought before the time of Jesus believed in a reward for the faithful beyond death. Great

faith in this life gives hope for resurrection … Not everyone has faith. The Lord, however, keeps faith

2 Thessalonians 2:16–3:5 Paul encourages the community to trust in God's faithful presence that will stay with them

through all difficulties. Hope brings us to good words and deeds because God is faithful toward us.

Luke 20:27-38 One of the Sadducees makes fun of belief in the resurrection by inventing an impossible scenario. Jesus

points out that we change when we go through death into resurrection, and we don't know what the risen life is like.

God is not the God of the dead but of the living. Retrieved from: www.churchofepiphany.com

In today’s second reading, Saint Paul offers encouragement to the Christian

community and prays that the Lord instill encouragement in their hearts.

There is nothing worse than discouragement to drain people spiritually and

emotionally. Yet, at times, it is much easier to lose patience with others and

offer critical and discouraging words. We are “our brothers’ (and sisters’)

keepers.” We are stewards of our relationships with others. Offering

encouragement is essential to the exercise of that stewardship. Saint Paul

understood that God worked through him just as God works through us to

encourage others. How often do we ask the Lord for encouragement? How

often do we look for opportunities to affirm, strengthen and encourage

others in our daily lives? Retrieved from: catholicstewardship.com

Lord Jesus, Thank You profoundly for our brave American heroes! Give us all a fresh and renewed spirit of love for them and for our nation. Open our eyes to the sacrifices they have made to keep us free to worship You in peace. Thank You for our beautiful land, a land of abundance and freedom, and a beacon of liberty. Thank You for our veterans and active duty heroes who have put their lives on the line to keep it that way. May their dedication and honor never be forgotten. Help us now to retain that blessing by honoring Your gift to us, by not allowing ourselves or our elected officials to slip into practices that rob the people of their heritage. Keep us vigilant!
