STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY: PAST AND PRESENT

This week on November 8, if they have not already done so, Americans will go to the polls to choose the people they believe will be the best stewards of the resources of our country. This is a sacred responsibility because a de-mocratic republic such as ours depends on its citizens to make careful, conscientious decisions about their elected officials and about questions that are set before them. Pray fervently and act wisely over what is at stake in our country and in our state. When all is said and done, there will be a lot of work that has to be done to heal the wounds this election has opened. Pray for peace and for the courage and care that will be needed for our country to shape a government and a culture of honesty, justice and respect for all human beings, for the unborn and the eld-erly, for women and men, for families and for the poor and the marginalized.

It's easy to call others to task for their failure as stewards. Today I write to you about ourselves as stewards of God's gifts. Justice, like charity, begins at home where we all need to take a hard, honest look at what we have to give to the Lord and to the mission of our church. Nationally, next Sunday has been designated "Stewardship Sun-day." When I came to Peabody 16 years ago we started a stewardship committee and told people in the pews that we need their help. We are church that depends on what people give us. You may think this is first and foremost money. But even more important and necessary is the gift of yourself in service to others.

Today I want to prepare you for our celebration of Stewardship Sunday next week by explaining how stewardship is an essential part of discipleship. Clearly, the first disciples of Jesus were called to sell everything and follow him. As the number of disciples increased it became clear that not everyone was called to get up and leave father and mother and family to evangelize other people in other places. When they heard the gospel, many who became disci-ples could not abandon wife and children. One man who was cured by Jesus wanted to join him on his mission. Saint Mark records: "(Jesus) would not permit him but told him instead, “Go home to your family and announce to them all that the Lord in his pity has done for you.(Mark 5:19)”

So what does a disciple do back home? The early church recalls how people lived a life in community. They prayed, broke bread, and shared what they had in common. "All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their property and possessions and divide them among all according to each one’s need." (Acts 2:44-46)

Stewardship Sunday is about remembering that everything we have in this world is a gift from God: our life, our health, our wealth, our skills, our family, our faith! We are not free to hoard or exploit these gifts. Rather we are to take what has been entrusted to us and invest it as our Master expects us. In the gospel parable of good and bad ser-vants, the master commends and rewards those who use what he gave them to make it increase. He chastises the one who buried his master's treasure in the ground (Matt. 25:14-30) The word talent is used because at the time it was a form of currency. Down through the centuries we have come to use the word talent to mean a skill or ability a person has. Both meanings come together to express the focus of Christian stewardship: God expects us to use both our personal talents and treasures to serve him and his mission.

Next weekend at all our Masses in both churches we will ask you to be diligent stewards of God's gifts. We will invite you to offer your time and talent to serve the many needs of our communities: for example, the need for peo-ple at the altar (lectors, communion ministers, altar servers, choir members), in our ministries (catechists, aids, of-fice workers,) in works of mercy (food pantry, Friday lunches, St. Vincent de Paul, Thrift Store) and others. Our church depends on volunteers. In September we filled the gym at St. Thomas with volunteers from both parishes who were honored and thanked for their service. There were many more who couldn't come. We would be lost without these good people. But we need more. We need you. And I can assure you that whatever you give to God comes back to you many times over. This also pertains to what we give to God from our earthly treasury. We need your financial support to keep our doors open and our services active. Please help us. We all have things to offer: time, talent and treasure. Help us and others be good stewards by your example of generosity in each of these areas of our life. For all who will be sustained by your sharing, I thank you! Fr. John

We are now looking for volunteers (two per week) to prepare a pot of soup for any Friday throughout this winter, starting on November 4th. Thank you for offering your culinary efforts to feed our brothers and sisters in Christ!

For I was hungry and you gave me food, Matthew 25:35 Packaged food and drinks for the weekends is very important as there is no open soup kitchen in Peabody for either Saturday or Sunday. Please refer to the list below for donations for this purpose. Additionally, we distribute fresh fruit, donated cloth-ing, shoes, sneakers, toiletries, and fun activities such as cross-words, word search, and adult coloring books with markers. St. John the Baptist St. Vincent de Paul

We’re Collecting Food for the Needy. Can You Help?

Canned Goods Drive for Thanksgiving

Each year our St. Vincent de Paul Society organizes a special collection of food to share with low-income fami-lies in our parish. These non-perishable food items ac-company a turkey dinner given to each family for Thanks-giving. If you can help, please bring your contribution to church on the weekend of November 12/13. Children in Religious Education and in St. John’s School may bring the food to class. The cost of providing a Thanksgiving dinner has increased and we are serving more people. If you would like to help us pay for these dinners you may send your donation to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Place your donation in the collection basket or mail it di-rectly to St. John’s Parish Center. Thank you for sharing what you have with those in need.

THE LISA WILEY FUNERAL FUND

Last summer I wrote to you about Lisa Wiley, a homeless woman who came regularly to our Friday lunches and died suddenly. We provided a funeral for her at Saint John's on August 13.

Mass Health provides some modest funding for funeral expenses but not enough to cover all that is involved, even for a simple funeral. Saint John's parish contributed everything related to the funeral Mass. Volunteers pre-pared and served a meal after the funeral. The funeral directors also contributed some of their services but there are some expenses that are not donated and need to be paid. Saint John's offered to assume these costs in the amount of $2,400.

We appeal to you to consider making a donation in any amount to Saint John's to help defray these costs. Donations can be made payable to Saint John the Baptist Parish / Lisa Wiley Fund. Thank you for considering this work of mercy. God bless. Fr. John

L ITURGICAL CELEBRATIONS

Today we will look at the ministry of usher. So what is the difference between an usher and a greeter you may ask? There may not

be any difference at all. Here at St. John’s Church we are hoping to develop both complimentary ministries so we will always have a welcoming presence for all who come to our Church. Here, let’s look at the minis-try specific to what we usually think of as usher.

In the ‘old days’ ushers were easily identified: they were men; they wore suits; they had name tags; they congregated at the back of church; they seated people at crowded Masses and so on. In other words, ushers were visible. That image has somewhat changed but not the importance of the role of ushers.

Yes, ushers have tasks to accomplish. Among them might be to welcome people when they come in to church and answer their questions. They help people find a place to sit. They take up the collection and as-sist with the presentation of the gifts. They respond to emergencies or unusual situations. But these are not just tasks on a checklist. They are ministries. And to do them well requires a minister’s heart.

The role of the usher is just as important and vital to the life of the parish as every other minister’s. After all, theirs is the first face people will associate with the Church when they arrive and probably the last one they see as they go forth for another week.

Jesus was frequently a guest in peoples home. He knew what it meant to be welcomed warmly and when His host failed in hospitality. Our ushers extend the wel-come of Christ into His home whenever they fulfill their ministry.

ELECTIONS: "We urge those Catholic officials who choose to depart from Church teaching on the inviolability of human life in their public life to consider the consequences for their own spiritual well being, as well as the scandal they risk by leading others into serious sin. We call on them to reflect on the grave contradiction of assuming public roles and presenting themselves as credible Catholics when their actions on fundamental issues of human life are not in agreement with Church teaching. No public official, especially one claiming to be a faithful and serious Catholic, can responsibly advocate for or actively support direct attacks on innocent hu-man life" (US Bishops, Living the Gospel of Life, 1998, n. 32).
