HOLD THE DATE!

Saturday, November 1912:30 PM in Downey Hall

One of the most enjoyable parts of my day is the morning drop-off of our St. Mary’s School students. It’s so refreshing and

energizing to see all these happy kids at 8:00 AM. It is also a greattime to chat with parents and teachers. It’s a great way to start theday. The kids are usually excited about one thing or another andlately the excitement is all about Halloween! The younger kids arevery excited about telling me what they will be for Halloween andwhat kinds of activities are planned for the day. Halloween willcertainly be observed at St. Mary’s! On Monday, October 31, at2:00 PM in the parking lot, there will be a Halloween Parade featuringthe students of St. Mary’s School. It promises to be great!

Once Halloween comes and goes, it seems like we get on the fasttrack to the holiday season. This year is no exception. Thanksgiv-ing will be here before you know it, and so once again this year weare having our annual turkey drive. Every year St. Mary’s FoodPantry distributes turkeys and all the Thanksgiving trimmings tothose who are in need. Please refer to the announcements in today’sbulletin for all the details. This is a great way to share Thanksgivingwith someone or a family who might otherwise not be able tocelebrate this great American feast. Thank you very much for yourgenerosity!

Last Sunday, Youth Ministry sponsored a college night for juniorsand seniors. Representatives from St. Bonaventure University andSiena College were here to talk to students about college and theopportunities that both our Franciscan colleges offer. If you missedthe college night or need more information, you can find bothschools online. St. Bonaventure University can be found atwww.sbu.edu and Siena College is at www.siena.edu.

Finally, this week we will celebrate two great feasts in the church:the Feast of All Saints on Tuesday and the Feast of All Souls onWednesday. These feasts offer us a wonderful opportunity to stayconnected with all the great women and men who have gone beforeus in the faith. All Saints celebrates the Communion of Saints, which binds all of us on earth with all the saints in heaven to formthe Mystical Body of Christ. All Souls Day keeps us connected toour friends and family members who have died and are praying forus in heaven. These two celebrations really are a great way toremind us that we are all connected, we are all one and that lifedoesn’t end, it changes. Please check the announcement in today’sbulletin for the mass schedule for these two days.

For the past few weeks, you’ve been reading in the bulletin aboutthe St. Mary’s chapter of the Franciscan Response to Fracking

Campaign and their trip to Trenton, which had been scheduled forOctober 21, the date the Delaware River Basin Commission hadscheduled a meeting. Last week, we learned that the Commissionhad postponed its meeting until November 21. So, the bus trip isstill on, just delayed for a month.

We are going to Trenton because of our concern that the Commissionmay vote to open the Delaware River watershed to hydraulicfracturing, or fracking, a controversial method of obtaining naturalgas from oil shale by pumping millions of gallons of water, hundredsof chemicals and sand thousands of feet below the earth’s surface.Throughout the country, where fracking has been used, groundwater has been contaminated, not only from the chemicals used infracking but also from the natural gas itself, in some cases makingtap water flammable. It is particularly important that the DelawareRiver watershed not be endangered, as it provides water to morethan 15 million people. The Holy Name Province has taken a strongstand against fracking because of its recognized threat to theenvironment, especially to drinking water.

If you would like to join the group from St. Mary’s for the trip toTrenton on November 21 (cost is $20), please contact Claire Furberat 973.513.9774. To learn more about the Franciscan Response toFracking Campaign here at St. Mary’s, please contact GerryO’Halloran at [email protected] or JackieSchramm at [email protected].

Food Pantry—The amazing annual turkey race has begun!

In some ways our annual Thanksgiving turkey drive feels like a race(to me). We know that we need frozen turkeys early because ourfamilies will pick up on November 12 and November 19 in order tohave them before Thanksgiving Day. But we can't start asking forturkeys too soon or we'll have trouble storing them all. If you can beas generous as last year, we will again make it to the finish line - outof breath - but smiling.

Ideal for us, and many of our families, are the 12 to 15 lb. frozenturkeys. However, we accept all sizes, as we do have some largefamilies, and it's not always easy to get the smaller ones.

If delivering a turkey to us is difficult, and you'd prefer to donate asupermarket gift card for one, please feel free to doso—we're happyto do the shopping part.

What's needed now? Thanksgiving Day trimmings will soon beneeded: gravy, stuffing, instant potatoes, cranberry sauce, etc. We'realso still in need of jelly.

Outreach—Buckets are at the doors of church this weekend tocollect loose change—no bills—to help the poor in our community.
