The Days of the Dead: Next Saturday evening we begin our annual Christian harvest festival – God’s harvest festival celebrated on Halloween (October 31st), All Saints Day (November 1st) and All Souls (November 2nd). Although some of the activities of these days may have had their beginnings in pre-Christian Celtic practices, still they continue to have meaning for all of us – even those who have never met a Druid. On Halloween, we begin the festivities with storytelling by candle light (or a fire inside a pumpkin) as at any vigil. The customs of these days can certainly bear a positive Christian interpretation: trick or treat (door to door hospitality); jack-o-lanterns (a “welcome home” lamp); apple bobbing and candy treats (a foretaste of the abundance of God’s Kingdom). Even the costumes are a sign of the kingdom where all the faithful will be raised in glory.
S.J.B. ANNOUNCEMENTS October 25, 2015
THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: It is difficult at first to see any clear connection between today’s readings. Jeremiah’s joy at the end of the Exile, the Letter to the Hebrews’ description of the role of the high priest, and Jesus’ cure of the blind man on the road from Jericho seem disparate. Perhaps the only connection is the element of faith, an unrelenting trust in a loving and compassionate God. Jeremiah’s long ministry extended from the terrible days of the rise of Babylon through the destruction of Jerusalem in 587 and the exile of its prominent citizens. Through it all, the prophet never lost faith in God. Today’s reading (Jer. 31:7-9) depicts the joyous homecoming that awaits those who remain faithful. It is a beautiful passage, full of consolation and encouragement for the sorrowing exiles. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews (our second reading – Heb. 5:1-6) again refers to the Jewish high priest, observing that it is his function to be the people’s representative before God, to offer sacrifices, and to “deal patiently” with sinners, since he is one, too. Now Jesus Christ is our external high priest, although He neither sought this office nor took it for Himself; even Christ’s priesthood is a ministry bestowed by God. In today’s gospel (MK. 10:46-52) the cure of the blind beggar is important because it shows us how miracles can lead to faith. When, in reply to Jesus’ question, Bartimaeus says simply, “I want to see,” Jesus responds just as simply, “your faith has healed you.” The physical miracle is not as important as the spiritual reality to which it points.
SPECIAL SAINT’S DAY THIS WEEK
Wednesday, October 28th – Sts. Simon and Jude These two saints are numbered among the chosen twelve – but they are apostles about whom we know very little. Simon is the “zealot” (not Simon Peter) who is said to have preached in Egypt; Jude (or Thaddeus) is
known today as the saint of impossible cases.
Special Month: October is considered the Month of the Holy Rosary – a time for special devotion to Our Lady. During our sung Masses this month our Communion Hymn will be a Marian hymn. We encourage everyone to pray the rosary during October.
Time Change: For many years, Daylight Savings Time ended and we returned to Standard Time on the last Sunday in October; however, a few years ago, Congress in its wisdom decided to extend D.S.T. for one week. Which means that D.S.T. will end next week, on Sunday, November 1st at 2:00 a.m. Clocks should be turned BACK by 2:00 a.m. on November 1st (so better do it before going to bed on Saturday, October 31st). Remember: “Spring Ahead! Fall back!” This means we gain an hour of sleep.
All Souls Day: November is the month that we pray for all our dearly departed. On All Souls Day, November 2nd, we remember our friends and loved ones who have gone before us into eternal life. Those whose names are returned to us on All Souls envelopes will be remembered at all Masses at St. John’s during the month of November. Envelopes are available at the exits of the Church for those who have not received them in the mail.
Lectors: Your “2016” workbooks are ready to be picked up in the Sacristy. They are filed for each Mass Team alphabetically. Please pick them up before November 22nd.
Congratulations: We welcome into our parish family the following children who were baptized at St. John’s over the past few months: Brendan Noah McCormack, Dominic Rubbo, Laura Margaret Lillis, Legion Anthony Rago, Adelyn Hayes, Kiera Markey, Evanna Joy, Chloe Therese O’Shea, Jayce Anthony Licht, Tyler Joseph Ragusa, Madison Alexandra Caso,
Nicholas Alexander Contreros, Gavin Devitt Gregoire, Isla Rose Kiers, Isabella Catalina Reyes Valencia, Angelica Pauline Ofriyie Larkai, Zachery Paul Nshyira Larkai, Justin Alexander Cinfo, Aidan Christopher Cageao, Michael Malak Wissa, Aryah Ina Disla, Rafael Julian Haelen, William Patrick KiersLiam Murray, Joseph Anthony Paradiso, Joshua Henry Ribeiro, Olivia Michelle Strickrodt, Quintino Salvatore Ciuffetelli, Alexandra Rose Banome, Alex Camaj, Shanagh Lily Bronagh Gawley, Christian Cruz-Bernal, Marcello Luigi DiNoia and Lucas Andrew Wood. We extend our congratulations and prayers in a special way to their parents and godparents!
Sunday Report: Last weekend 1,300 parishioners attended Mass; our collection totaled $8495.00; average contribution: $6.54. Thank you for your continued financial support of St. John’s and its many needs. Your generosity is essential and greatly appreciated. Rest in Peace: Let us pray for Edward J. Drenga who was buried from our church this past week. Our prayers go out to his families and friends.
Volunteer Opportunity: Habitat for Humanity, an organization that builds houses for those in need, is planning a project in our own backyard.
The house will be in southwest Yonkers and will be called the Pope Francis House in honor of his visit. This is a perfect opportunity to live out the gospel message our Holy Father preaches by volunteering your time and effort. The minimum age for volunteers is 14 and the project will take place on upcoming Saturdays. If you are interested either call the rectory or Deacon Nick Ramoni at 914-776-1187. Father/Daughter Dance: The H.N.S will host their annual Father/Daughter “Hoedown” Dance on Friday, November 13th, in the lower Church from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. The cost will be $15.00 per person and will include dinner and DJ. So please get those cowboy/girl boots ready! Any questions, please contact Tina Osso at (914) 879-2975.
All Saints’ Eve: This year Halloween, October 31st, falls on a Saturday. It has become a custom for our H.N.S. to have a party
for our children. It will be held next Saturday from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. in the lower Church. Pizza, soda and “goodies” provided; costumes are required. A $5.00 donation for children 11 years and under, $10.00 for children 12 years and older is requested. Please do everything you can to ensure that Halloween is a safe and happy experience for our children! High School Open Houses: Many high schools are hosting open houses in the next few weeks and all ask for bulletin space. We will limit space for those who contact us directly and can provide only basic information. The following have contacted us: Iona Prep, Saturday, October 24th, 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. and Wednesday, October 28th, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.; Cardinal Spellman H.S., Sunday, October 25th, 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; The Ursuline School (New Rochelle), Saturday, October 31st, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and Fordham Prep (Bronx), Sunday, November 1st, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
A Little While: Hard as it is to believe, we are coming to the end of Msgr. Birkle’s annual sojourn at St. John’s. This Sunday will be his last Sunday with us until May! On Monday he will begin his trip to Florida where he will spend the winter assisting at St. Patrick’s parish in Palm Beach Gardens and missing all of us at St. John’s desperately! We thank him for his priestly service among us and wish him “Bon Voyage!” Please keep Msgr. Birkle in your prayers.
Monthly Maintenance: Since next Sunday is the first Sunday of the month of November, we will take up our regular “First Sunday of the Month” second collection after Communion next week. This collection helps with the upkeep, maintenance, and cleaning of our beautiful church. Please be generous.
Second Collection: This weekend we will take up our monthly special collection to support our school and maintain our school
facilities. The school is not only used for our grammar school children, our CCD classes and our RCIA program, but for a variety of community and parish activities. It is vital that we keep our school facilities in excellent condition. We ask for a contribution of $7.00 in this monthly collection and once again express our appreciation for your generosity.
Rosary Altar Society: Next Sunday, November 1st, we welcome members of the R.A.S. to our Mass at 11:00 a.m. Join us on Monday, November
2nd at 8:00 p.m. in the lower Church for our monthly meeting.
Local Production: Archbishop Stepinac High School Drama Club presents the family Broadway hit, “Peter and the Starcatcher.” Show dates are: November 6th and 7th at 7:30 p.m. and November 7th at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $20.00 for adults and $15.00 for children under 12 and senior citizens. For ticket reservations please call 914-946-4800 ext. 200. For further information email [email protected].
H.N.S. Father/Son Basketball: Calling all 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys to compete against their dads for “bragging rights.” Please join us on Saturday,
November 7th at 5:45 p.m. in the school gym. The cost is $10.00 per person which includes pizza, snacks, dessert and drinks. For more information please call John Sanchez at 476-1776.
Expectant Parents: On Sunday, November 8th, at the 9:30 a.m. Mass we invite all those parents who are awaiting the birth (or the adoption) of a child. The Mass will include a special blessing for these parents. The expectant parents will also receive a special blessed Holy card. If you would like to attend this Mass, please fill out the following and put it in the collection basket, give it to one of the ushers or drop it off at the rectory:
