The Israelites had been “aliens … in the land of Egypt”, where they were mistreated, op-pressed and enslaved. The LORD expects that from that experience they would learn to treat the “alien” (i.e., foreigner) in their own land with greater respect than the Israelites received in Egypt, for “aliens” are a vulnerable class of people. That leads to the LORD’s command to care for the widow, the orphan, the poor. These three groups are paradigmatic in the Torah (the Law) as well as in the Prophets and Psalms for the people who are most in need and thus deserve people’s attention and care. If any of these groups is not treated with respect, and if they are not cared for, they no doubt will cry out to the LORD. And then, the LORD says, “I will surely hear their cry. My wrath will flare up….” Throughout the Scriptures, whenever there is a lack of justice, the Israelites also lack the strength to protect themselves from invading armies. This is the root of the ominous warning: “I will kill you with the sword; then your own wives will be widows, and your children orphans.” Jesus embodied the LORD’s care for the widow, orphan and poor in his ministry. He also healed “aliens”. Everyone Jesus met was a “neighbor” who was to be loved; everyone Jesus met was a chance for him to show his love for God the Father, because every person is created in the image and likeness of God. Jesus’ example and the commands in Exodus remind each and every one of us that we are descendants of “aliens” AND persons who need and deserve respect (the basic meaning of “love” in the love commandments). So, how do you and I speak about and act toward refugees and immigrants? While our modern society and government have more “safety nets” in place than in Jesus’s day, and especially the time of

Moses, there are still many poor in our nation and world. Through-out the world, millions die each year from starvation and malnutri-tion; billions live on less than $2.50/day (for excellent information, see finca.org/campaign/world-poverty; FINCA = Foundation for International Community Assistance). Many lack health care so that many preventable deaths occur. Elective abortion and euthanasia are “medical” abuses that fail to afford human dignity in the extreme. Environmental issues are more and more pressing, and they impact the poor disproportionately. Discrimination on the basis of “race, color, religion, sex, or national origin” (categories in the Equal Em-ployment Opportunity Act) is still all too prevalent. Taking all of these together can be daunting and depressing. As a nation and as a world, however, much progress has been made. There is much more to be done; each of us can reflect on what we are doing and what we might still do for ‘the poor, the widow and the orphan’. We pray with the Psalmist: “I love you, O LORD, my strength, O LORD, my rock, my fortress, my deliverer.” The foun-dation of our LORD’s love for us and ours for the LORD helps us in our love for ourselves and our “neighbor”—each and every human being with whom we interact, really and virtually. Our neighbor is also the far distant sister or brother we may never meet, but can help with our prayer and with our support of organizations who directly work to eradicate poverty, hunger, curable diseases, social injustic-es, etc. Catholic men, do you feel a call to do more for the Church? Would you like to know more about the calling of permanent deacons? Deacon Tim Murphy is holding an inquiry night to learn more about at 7:00pm on Tuesday, Oct. 27 in the St. Lawrence Family Room. Wives are welcome. You can also join online, call 792-0513 to arrange that. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING YOUR PARISH. As the financial figures showed in the bulletin a couple weeks ago, we are falling short of meeting our obligations. If you are able to do more, please do so. That would be greatly appreciated. Here’s a friendly reminder of ways to give (esp. if you don’t feel safe to come back to Mass):

Use the parish-addressed envelope in your packets to mail in your offering, or use your own envelope.

Drop your envelopes in the mail slot just right of the main doors to the St. Bernard office or the mail slot of St. Au-gustine’s Rectory, Halbur. (Sacred Heart Templeton parish-ioners may drop offerings off at the bank.)

See this as the time to start automatic payments from your bank to your parish—form is available on CTKCC web-site—first document, right side!

We hope to have a new online possibility soon! The St. Rose of Lima #6 Catholic Daughters will be meeting on Thursday, Nov 5th at Holy Spirit Church. Rosary at 5:10; Mass at 5:30 followed by dinner/meeting. We will have our Memorial Ser-vice for our deceased members and will be giving out our member-ship pins/awards. Contact Bev Vonnahme at 712-689-2211 for res-ervations by Monday, November 2nd.
