Course Objectives : After the completion of the course the student should be able to

1. Understand the basic concept of remote sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) & Global Positioning System (GPS).

2. Apply the acquired knowledge for data acquisition & Integration of geospatial features in computing environment

3. Evaluate the software/hardware requirements for implementing a RS & GIS Project.

Assessments : Teacher Assessment: Two components of In Semester Evaluation (ISE), One Mid Semester Examination (MSE) and one End Semester Examination (ESE) having 20%, 30% and 50% weights respectively.

Remote Sensing Process, Source of Energy - Electromagnetic Radiation & Spectrum, Interaction of EMR with atmosphere and earth surface – Absorption, Scattering, Refraction & Reflection, atmospheric windows.

Module 2 : Types of RS & Sensor Characteristics: 7Hrs.

Various Types of Remote Sensing, Earth Observation Sensors and Platforms – orbits, platforms, sensor classification, Concept of Swath & Nadir, PAN/MSS, resolutions, Indian Remote Sensing IRS Satellites, Digital Image, Visual Image Interpretation, Concept of Spectral Signatures & its reflectance curve.

Module 3 - Introduction to GPS 6 Hrs. Requirements of ground truth data, Concept of GNSS & GLONASS, GPS Segments – space, control & user, Working Principles of GPS, GPS Signals, GPS Errors & Biases, Introduction to DGPS, GPS Applications.

Module 4 – Fundamentals of GIS 7 Hrs. Introduction, Defining GIS, Components of GIS, Views of GIS, GIS as an interdisciplinary approach, advantage & functional requirements of GIS, Spatial Data & Non Spatial Data, Thematic Characters, Map projections & Coordinate Systems, Necessity of Topology, Concept of reproduction, transformation & generalization,

Basics of Remote Sensing - Electromagnetic energy & Radiation, Interaction of EMR with Atmosphere and earth surface, atmospheric windows, EMR spectrum, active & passive remote sensing, EMR Spectrum – Visible, Infra-Red, Near IR, Thermal & Microwave, Black body Radiation, Atmospheric characteristics – Scattering of EMR – Raleigh, Mie, Non-Selective & Raman Scattering, Reflectance – Specular & Diffuse reflections.

Module 2 : Types of RS & Sensor Characteristics: 7Hrs.

Satellites & Classification based on – Orbits – Sun Synchronous & Geo Synchronous, platforms, sensor classification – Indian Remote Sensing IRS Satellites Characteristics- Earth Resources, Communication Weather, Spy Satellite, Description of multispectral scanning – whiskbroom & pushbroom scanning, Spectral reflectance, Spectral reflectance signature curve, Spectral Signatures of Different Land cover Features, Resolutions – Spatial, Spectral, Radiometric & Temporal. Concept of Microwave, Thermal & Hyper-Spectral Remote Sensing

Module 3 - Digital/Satellite Image Processing 8 Hrs.

Basic Concepts of Digital Image & File formats, Processing, Preprocessing – Geometric & Radiometric Correction, Image Enhancement, Image Filtering Techniques – Low Pass & High Pass Filters, Image Transformation – NDVI & PCA, Image Classification- Supervised & Unsupervised.

Module 4 – Fundamentals of GIS 7 Hrs.

GIS - Introduction, Defining GIS, Components of GIS, Spatial Data & Non Spatial Data, Thematic Characters, Map projections, Coordinates and Geo-referencing, Geospatial data models: Spatial Data Types, Entity Definition, Spatial Data Models, Spatial Data Structures, Data Compression Techniques, Vector & Raster Data Structures. Non-Spatial / Attribute Data Models – hierarchical, network, relational & ER models.

Module 5 – Spatial & Non Spatial Data Modeling 8 Hrs.

GIS Data Inputting & Editing – Methods of digitizing & scanning, Special data – reproduction, transformation & Generalization, Edge Matching & Rubber Sheeting, Integrated database. GIS Data Analysis – GIS Measurements – length, area, perimeter, GIS Queries, reclassification, buffering & neighborhood functions, Raster & Vector Overlay, Spatial Interpolation, Surface & Network Models. GIS Data Quality - Sources of errors, data quality issue, Finding, modeling & managing errors. Modern Trends in GIS – 3D GIS, 4D GIS, Web GIS, Mobile GIS, Collaborative GIS

Module 6 – RS & GIS Software & Applications Case Studies 5 Hrs.

Introduction to Remote Sensing & GIS software (Freeware, Open Source & License). Applications of RS & GIS in various domain areas. (Discipline dependent)
