CINCINNATI TOWNHOUSE

FOR THIS STUDIO PROJECT WE WERE GIVEN A HYPOTHETICAL SITE THAT WAS 22’x110’. THE GOAL WAS TO DESIGN A TOWNHOUSE FOR A FAMILY OF FOUR THAT MAY EXPAND FURTHER. I CHOSE TO DESIGN MY HOUSE AROUND A CIRCULATION SLICE THAT WAS ARTICULATED ON THE FRONT FACADE, AND CONTINUED AROUND AS A SKYLIGHT. THE FIRST FLOOR WAS KEPT AS OPEN AS POSSIBLE. THE SECOND FLOOR WAS DESIGNATED TO THE KIDS ROOMS WITH AN OPEN LOFT FOR STUDY OR PLAY. THE TOP FLOOR IS THE MASTER SUITE, WITH IT’S OWN TERRACE AND SEPARATE SITTING ROOM LOFT.

STAIR STUDY

AFTER I DOCUMENTED AND DIAGRAMMED SEVERAL STAIRS ON CAMPUS, I CHOSE ONE STAIR TO BUILD IN RHINO AND RENDERED IT USING BOTH RHINO RENDER AND PHOTOSHOP.

WORK AT NELLIGAN WHITE ARCHITECTS

AT NELLIGAN WHITE, I WAS GIVEN SEVERAL TASKS. i WORKED ON DRAFTING BUILDING SECTIONS. i WAS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR BUILDING MODELS OF THE PROJECT. THIS INCLUDED BOTH PHYSICAL MODELS AND RHINO MODELS. THE PHYSICAL MODELS WERE CONSTRUCTED USING A LASER-CUTTER TO BOTH ETCH DETAILS AND CUT OUT THE PIECES. THE RHINO MODELS WERE USED TO RENDER IMAGES THAT WERE USED TO ITERATE THE DESIGN.

CINCINNATI JUNIOR ROW HOUSE

FOR THIS STUDIO PROJECT WE WERE TASKED WITH DESIGNING A PLACE WHERE THE CINCINNATI JUNIOR ROW CLUB COULD TRAIN INDOORS, AS WELL AS STORAGE FOR BOATS. THE SITE IS RIGHT ON THE OHIO RIVER.

SPACIAL CONSTRUCTION

STARTING IN INDIVIDUAL DRAWING FORM, THIS PROJECT TRANSITIONED FROM AN INDIVIDUAL PROJECT TO LARGE GROUP. INDIVIDUALLY, WE DESIGNED OUR OWN MODELS, FROM THESE, MINE WAS CHOSEN TO USE TO MOVE FORWARD WITH. AS A GROUP OF 20 PEOPLE WE DESIGNED A MODEL USING PHYSICAL ITERATIONS AS WELL AS RHINO. THE CONSTRUCTION HAD TO WORK WELL WITH THE OTHER SIX MODELS TO CREATE ONE LARGE STRUCTURE THAT WAS BUILT AT FULL SCALE.

DESIGNING FROM WITHIN

STARTING BY FOCUSING ON THE INTERIOR SPACE BY DRAWING FIVE SECTIONS. THE SECTIONS BECAME THREE DIMENSIONAL, AND AN OPERATION WAS APPLIED TO IT. THESE MODELS WERE REFINED. FINALLY THESE MODELS WERE ARRANGED TOGETHER TO CREATE ONE LARGER SERIES OF SPACES.

DESIGNING FROM WITHOUT

THROUGH MANY STUDIES OF HOW TO PLAY WITH LIGHT AND INCORPORATING THE REQUIRED PROGRAM ELEMENTS (A SWIMMING POOL AND AN AUDITORIUM). I CAME TO THIS DESIGN WHICH INTEGRATES THE POOL INTO THE MAIN ENTRANCE AND DRAWS PEOPLE UP TO THE AUDITORIUM, WITH LIGHT PASSING THROUGH THE WHOLE BUILDING.

VACUUM FORM EXPLORATION

THIS WAS A STUDY OF HOW TO USE THE VACUUM FORM AS A STRATEGY FOR DESIGN. FIRST WE USED THE VACUUM FORM TO CREATE SHAPES, THEN THESE WERE CUT INTO 1” STRIPS AND REASSEMBLED INTO A FINAL MODEL.

ADOBE SKILLS

I DEVELOPED FLUENCY IN ADOBE CREATIVE SUITE PRODUCTS THROUGH EXPLORING RENDERING TECHNIQUES WITH ILLUSTRATOR AND PHOTOSHOP. THE UTILITY KNIFE WAS DONE ENTIRELY IN ILLUSTRATOR USING DIFFERENT GRADIENTS, FILLS, AND MESHES. FOR THE BUILDING, THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO DRAW A BUILDING AT SEVERAL SCALES, AND RENDER THE DETAILS IN PHOTOSHOP. LASTLY, THE INTERI-OR RENDERING WAS DONE WITH A MIX OF HAND SKETCHING AND PHOTOSHOP.
