Our culture is so focused on current events and headlines, that we can easily lose sight of some historical perspective. But a brief glance at history can remedy that. The mere fact of the Church's endurance through twenty centuries, maintaining the same doc-trine, the same forms of worship (seven sacraments), and the same structure (bishops united under the pope's leadership to serve believers) is, without a doubt, miraculous. It only becomes more amazing when we take a look at the actual obstacles and ene-mies it had to overcome. The Roman Empire tried to stamp out Christianity for 300 years. That Empire is gone, the Church remains. In the Middle Ages, the Islamic Empire extended over even more territory than Rome had, and conquered many Christian lands. It invaded Europe and tried to do away with the Church. That Empire fell, but the Church remains. In the sixteenth century, most of northern Europe rebelled against the Catholic Church in what was called the Protestant Reformation. In some countries, being Catholic be-came a capital punishment. Yet today, the Catholic Church remains the largest Christian community, and in those countries, the Church remains. In the seventeenth century a new Islamic Empire, that of the Turks, tried again to overrun Christian civilization. That Empire is gone, the Church remains. In the eighteenth century, French Revolution tried to eradicate the Church in France, martyring hundreds, if not thousands. The Rev-olution passed, the Church endured.In the nineteenth century, Napoleon conquered all of continental , usurped the Church hierarchy, and imprisoned two popes in efforts to take over the Catholic Church. His Empire passed away; the Church remains. In the twentieth century, Soviet Communism tried to wipe out the Catholic Church in all of its territories, as did the Ger-man Nazis. Those regimes are gone, the Church remains. Today the saga continues, in Africa, the Middle East, China, India, Sri Lanka and Vi-etnam... The Church has endured, and it will continue to endure, just as Christ prom-ised. Peter will bring the net to shore, overstuffed with large fishes, and the net will not be torn. Because it is founded by Christ.

Nuestra cultura está tan centrada en los eventos y titulares actuales, que podemos fá-cilmente perder de vista alguna perspectiva histórica. Pero un breve vistazo a la historia lo puede remediar. El hecho de la perseverancia de la iglesia a través de veinte siglos, manteniendo la misma doctrina, las mismas formas de orar (siete sacramentos), y la misma estructura (obispos unidos bajo el liderazgo del Papa para servir a los creyentes) es, sin duda, milagrosa. Se vuelve más maravillosa cuando vemos los obstáculos reales y enemigos que ha teni-do que superar. El imperio Romano trató de acabar con el cristianismo por 300 años. Ese imperio ya ha desaparecido, la Iglesia ha permanecido. En la Edad Media, el impe-rio Islámico se extendió aún más de lo que el imperio Romano tenía y conquistó mu-chas tierras cristianas. Invadió Europa y trató de desaparecer la iglesia. Ese imperio ca-yó, pero la Iglesia permanece. En el siglo dieciséis, la mayor parte del norte de Europa se rebeló contra la iglesia cató-lica en lo que se llamó la Reforma Protestante. En algunos países, ser católico se convir-tió en pena capital. Sin embargo, hoy la iglesia católica sigue siendo la mayor comuni-dad cristiana, y en esos países la Iglesia permanece. En el siglo diecisiete un nuevo im-perio Islámico, en el que los turcos intentaron de nuevo invadir la civilización cristiana. Ese imperio ha desaparecido, la Iglesia permanece. En el siglo dieciocho, la revolución francesa trató de erradicar la Iglesia en Francia, martirizando a cientos, si no miles de personas. La revolución pasó la iglesia soportó En el siglo diecinueve, Napoleón conquistó todo el continente europeo, usurpó la jerar-quía de la Iglesia, encarceló a dos Papas para apoderarse de la Iglesia católica. Su impe-rio pasó y la Iglesia permanece. En el siglo veinte, el comunismo soviético trató de aca-bar con la iglesia católica de todos sus territorios, como lo hicieron los nazis alemanes. Esos regímenes han desaparecido, la Iglesia permanece. Hoy la saga continúa, en África, el Medio Oriente, China, India, Sri Lanka y Vietnam... La iglesia ha perdurado y lo seguirá haciendo, así como lo prometió Cristo. Pedro llevará la red a la orilla, llena de grandes peces, y la red no se romperá. Porque ha sido fundada por Cristo.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Muchas primeras comuniones se celebran en el Tiempo de Pascua. Además de recibir el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Jesús por primera vez en su vida los comulgantes reciben un libro de oraciones, un rosario y un escapulario. Como recuerdo del evento, muchos comulgantes regalan a sus amigos y pa-rientes alguna estampita religiosa. Las estampitas llevan imágenes de Jesucristo, la Virgen. Las ponemos en nuestros autos, en libros como la Biblia o libros de oración. Las tenemos en altarcitos domésticos o metidos en los marcos de las fotos de nuestros seres queri-dos. Muchos critican esta práctica recordando que en Éxodo 20:3-5, Dios prohibió el uso de ídolos. Esto la Iglesia católi-ca nunca lo ha negado, pero recuerda que Dios también pi-dió imágenes de ángeles para el arca de la alianza (Éxodo 25:17). En Números 21:8 mandó hacer una imagen milagro-sa de una serpiente. Ninguna de esas imágenes es considera-da un ídolo porque son imágenes al servicio de Dios y re-cuerdo de su presencia igual que las estampitas e imágenes religiosas.
