Stations of the Cross This moving and spiritually enriching practice is held every Friday in Lent at Noon and 7:15 PM at both St. Charles and St. John. And at 6 PM in Español at St. Charles. Fr. Palatucci encourages all parishioners to join us in the Via Dolorosa or The Way of the Cross. Pastors Corner-How about a big round of applause for all those who worked so hard in providing food and service for our recent St. Patrick’s Dinner Celebrations. I am so honored to be your pastor when I see you involved in your parish. When I arrived here, I desired to make this a place where we not only deepen our Catholic faith but also enjoy each other like a family. That’s really what a Catholic parish is all about. Like Jesus it's both human and divine. It's not just a building to worship in, it’s a family of God. I think our theme song could be “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge! But I cannot do this alone. I need your help, of everyone to patriciate in fulfilling the things planned. I have a strong desire and passion that our becomes the most vibrant parish in the county in so many ways. I want to wake up one morning and see 400 people at St. Charles and 1000 at St. John on Sundays. I want to say to myself, John, I think you

need to add Masses to the Sunday schedule. I want to ask the archdiocese to send me ANOTHER priest to help Fr. Thomas and me. I believe we can do it, but it’s going to take time, hard work, dedication, and loads of cooperation. Nevertheless, as we witnessed this last weekend with the success of TWO St. Patrick Celebrations, I think we're beginning to move in the right direction. And that makes me so very happy! (Now I sound like a song by Chicago)…I know, I know, I’m procrastinating in getting the Ten Commandants finished. I will eventually get those in the bulletin. It's been nutty for me lately so I’m finding it difficult to find the time to write something on the Third Commandment…The new upholstery and carpeting at St. John has been ordered. Hopefully everything will be finished by Easter. However, the Archdiocese does have strict requirements for the work of this magnitude. There’s paperwork and signatures and more paperwork and…well, you get the drift? Once everything is ready to go on the Archdiocesan end, the work will start. We’ll be inconvenienced for a short time as the pews will be removed to install the new carpet. Hopefully this should take no more than a week. We may need to have daily Mass in Father Moriarty Hall for a week. I instructed the contractor to make sure they have at least the pews back in for Sunday Mass. And if that means only half the church is completed by that Friday or Saturday, fine, I can deal with that. What I can't deal with are pews not re-installed even temporality for Sunday Mass. Please pray it doesn’t affect the Sunday schedule at St. John…I’m working on the finalizing some repairs at St. Charles. The church ceiling paint is peeling away. It looks terrible. We’ll get that fixed. And while we’re at it the bathroom will be painted too, new colors as well…Finally, I don’t if you heard but there’s a rumor going around that a parish picnic is in the works, thank you Knights of Columbus. I mean, an elf told me that. But who knows? I'll do some sleuthing to get to the bottom of this rumor. But for what I understand its not fake news and will probably be held on June 9. So please keep that day open. Until next week, pray for me and I will do the same for you, Fr. JP

Confirmation 2019

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. And kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you will renew the face of the earth. Lord, by the light of the Holy Spirit you have taught the hearts of your faithful. In the same Spirit help us to relish what is right and always rejoice in your consolation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Fruits of the Fig: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Third Sunday of Lent

In the Church, we are made children of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—the God who makes known His name and His ways to Moses in today’s First Reading.

Mindful of His covenant with Abraham (see Exodus 2:24), God came down to rescue His people from the slave drivers of Egypt. Faithful to that same covenant (see Luke 1:54–55, 72–73), He sent Jesus to redeem all lives from destruction, as today’s Psalm tells us.

Paul says in today’s Epistle that God’s saving deeds in the Exodus were written down for the Church, intended as a prelude and foreshadowing of our own Baptism by water, our liberation from sin, our feeding with spiritual food and drink.

Yet the events of the Exodus were also given as a “warning”—that being children of Abraham is no guarantee that we will reach the promised land of our salvation.

At any moment, Jesus warns in today’s Gospel, we could perish—not as God’s punishment for being “greater sinners”—but because, like the Israelites in the wilderness, we stumble into evil desires, fall into grumbling, forget all His benefits.

Jesus calls us today to “repentance”—not a one-time change of heart, but an ongoing, daily transformation of our lives. We’re called to live the life we sing about in today’s Psalm—blessing His holy name, giving thanks for His kindness and mercy.

The fig tree in His parable is a familiar Old Testament symbol for Israel (see Jeremiah 8:3; 24:1–10). As the fig tree is given one last season to produce fruit before it is cut down, so too Jesus is giving Israel one final opportunity to bear good fruits as evidence of its repentance (see Luke 3:8).

Lent should be for us like the season of reprieve given to the fig tree, a grace period in which we let “the gardener,” Christ, cultivate our hearts, uprooting what chokes the divine life in us, strengthening us to bear fruits that will last into eternity. Yours in Christ, Scott Hahn, PhD https://stpaulcenter.com/fruits-of-the-fig-scott-hahn-reflects-on-the-third-sunday-of-lent/
