MARCH 24TH, 2019 THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
CHRISTIAN FAITH FORMATION
Everyday Stewardship
Perhaps this Lent you are working hard to stick with your devotions, avoid hamburgers on Fridays, and fight your
temptations for soda since you gave it up for Jesus. You are planting seeds in your spiritual life in hopes of growing
them into something beautiful and meaningful. However, you have been trying this approach now for many years,
and it is hard to say that much has grown during all that time. You could deduce that what you are doing is not as
worthwhile as you once believed. There is no fruit because these things don't matter. Or you could take a real hard
look at your life, see where you are planting those seeds, and finally notice what the problem has been all along.
WEEDS!
Too often, we plant seeds over and over again in soil that is not rich in nutrients and is filled with weeds. The weeds
choke the life out of any growth that comes to the seeds planted. We think that adding good things to our life will
change it, and removal of sin will not be necessary. It is like eating two large hamburgers and a large fries and believ-
ing you won't gain weight because you drank a Diet Coke.
As good stewards who are called to discern how we respond to the call of Jesus Christ, we must be about ripping those
weeds out of our lives so the good seeds we plant can grow. For each of us, the weeds are different: money, ego, sex,
greed, etc. If we don't take a good honest look at our lives and make some tough choices, no amount of devotion or
good works will make us better disciples. We will simply wait for the next Lent to do the same things all over again.

Rediscover Jesus by Matthew Kelly
POINT TO PONDER: Jesus wants to teach you how to live an incredible life.
VERSE TO LIVE: "Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house upon rock.” Matthew 7:24
QUESTION TO CONSIDER: Have you ever really considered Jesus to be your teacher?
PRAYER: Jesus, teach me how to be a great student.
Next week: Fourth Sunday of Lent
About the Gospel:
Next Sunday is sometimes called “Joy
Sunday.” It is a time to remember the joy
that Easter brings after the time of repentance of Lent. The
prodigal son is a reminder that we also stray from our Fa-
ther through our sins and can return to the joy of His for-
giveness.
Visit www.usccb.org/bible/readings to read next Sunday’s
Scripture.
In Church:
Notice that the priest may be wearing rose-colored vest-
ments this Sunday as a sign that we are getting closer to
the joyful celebration of Easter.
Question of the Week:
How can you find joy even when you are struggling or
suffering?
Family Prayer:
Lord, open our hearts to ask for forgiveness and to forgive
others. Show us your mercy and help us to be merciful to
others.

First Scrutiny
Why do we continue to climb that hill day after day for
water, when we have been given everlasting water by the
One who came to reconcile us to the Father? Those seek-
ing to be cleansed in baptismal waters at Easter go
through Scrutinies "to uncover, then heal all that is weak,
defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out,
then strengthen all that is upright, strong, and
good" (RCIA 141). The story of the woman at the well
speaks to all of us of everlasting water that heals us and
gives us strength for the journey. There are those among
us who long for this, but we who have been marked for
Christ a long time ago already possess it. But too often we
continue to climb high hills looking for something else to
satisfy us. The Samaritan woman leaves behind her con-
tainer at the well when she leaves, for there is no reason
for her ever to return. You and I have left our vessels at
the well also. Stop climbing that hill. Today, as you listen
to the words of the Scrutiny prayers and ritual, let us be
resolved to drink again from that everlasting water God
has given to us.

The Memorare
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to your
protection,
implored your help, or sought your intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence,
I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.
To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sor-
rowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in your mercy, hear and answer me.
Amen.
Why do people go on a Pilgrimage?
Some are seeking inspiration.
Some desire a new perspective, a change of mind.
Some are studying various spiritual paths.
Some are seeking ways to reverse the destruction of life on the planet.
Some are learning methods of meditation.
Some are deeply questioning their life's purpose.
Some are committed to the idea and practice of pilgrimage.
Some are purifying their hearts, confusion giving way to clarity.
Some don't know why they are making a pilgrim-age, but are following their feelings and intuition.
Some want the time and setting to concentrate on a particular subject, or put into practice religious instructions they've already received.
Some are doing penance.
Some are helpers, cooks, drivers, etc., or are ac-companying another on her/his pilgrimage.
Some want to be in harmony with the natural world.
Some want the exercise of walking on a mountain or through a pasture.
Some are curious or wish to observe.
Some need to get away from their routine.
Some are spiritual adventurers, or just like to be on the road.
Some want to calm their minds and find peace.
Some are singers and are looking for something to sing or write about.
What are you longing for?

Word of the Lord
Please submitted the Time and Talent form.
There are numerous reasons why it is important fill in the Time and Talent form. Completing the form helps the parish office keep in contact with parishioners and know who our volunteers are. There are 2 col-umns, Current and Interested, please let us know what you are currently involved in as well as areas you are interested in volunteering.
Did you fill one out years ago and were never contact-ed? The parish office now has a system that groups volunteers in areas of the different ministries. This list will then be communicated to the various leads so they will have an updated listed. There are numerous areas in which help is always needed. The first page is information. We ask everyone com-plete this part of the form, separate single page sheets are available for those unable to volunteer at this time. This will help us ensure information is correct. Let the Lenten spirit guide you in this time of reflec-tion and revaluation.

Liturgical Schedule For March 30th & 31st
Overconfidence is bad for our spiritual life
Sometimes, it is hard to envision why people fail in their spiritual life. At times we are surprised by a person whose life is strongly attached to the Church, serves in different ministries, and then we hear that this person drops out of the Church. Why does this happen? What can we do to help?
This week, one of the approaches that we can consider from the liturgy gives us a bit of light on this issue. This hap-pens to people when they are “overconfident.” As St. Paul said in his letter to the Corinthians, the Hebrew people on their journey in the desert were witnesses to all kinds of miracles: water from the rock, mana from heaven, you name it. God Himself, took care of them and protected them. But, they made the Gold Bull Statue to worship anyway. So… where is the problem?
The problem is when we look in another direction. If we are in with the Lord, sometimes we take a short “license” by being not “too Christian,” then we are leaving open the window or the door for all kind of plagues to enter in our spir-itual house. This happens when we believe that we are wise enough, or strong enough to reject the enemy. This false perception is nothing more than being proud and overconfident. Even Jesus spent 40 days in the desert and was tempted by the devil. Remember, we are Temples of the Holy Spirit. We must keep our eyes on Jesus. God gives us the gift of freedom to do whatever we want, but sent us His Holy Spirit to guide us to the truth. Sometimes, like Peter, we walk on water, and if we look in another direction rather than Jesus, we can lose the way and sink.
