Bechtel to consolidate global HQ in Fairfax County, add 150 jobs

Bechtel, one of the world’s largest and most respected engineering, construction and project management companies, announced on June 8 that it will consolidate its

global headquarters in Fairfax County.

The company will move corporate positions from Houston and San Francisco to Reston by the end of 2018.

Bechtel has maintained operational headquarters in Reston since 2011, but the company’s corporate headquarters have been in San Francisco almost since its founding in 1898. The consolidation will add about 150 jobs to the company’s presence in Reston.

“Consolidating the corporate leadership and operations in Reston will enable the company to thrive in the current fast-paced business environment—one that demands faster and seamless decision-making, integration, and collaboration,” said Jack Futcher, Bechtel’s chief operating officer.

The FCEDA has worked with Bechtel on multiple occasions as the company has located and expanded operations in the county.

“Fairfax County has once again been selected as the headquarters location for a venerable, well-respected business. This speaks volumes to other American companies,” said Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the FCEDA. “I am delighted to see that the company can take advantage of the kinds of business and quality-of-life assets that Fairfax County has developed for corporate headquarters and employees.” n

FCEDA President and CEO Gerald Gordon announces he will retire at year’s end Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., whose work as leader of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority to build and diversify the county’s business community and economy led its transformation into one of the world’s top business locations, announced August 27 that he will retire from the FCEDA at the end of this calendar year.

Starting in January, Gordon will be serving as a fellow in the College of Charleston’s Joseph P. Riley Center for Livable Communities, where he will be working with faculty, staff and students to support the economic and cultural vibrancy of the City of Charleston, S.C. He also will teach in the college’s Master of Public Administration program. Additionally, Gordon will be consulting with institutions in northern Virginia and will serve on a local board.

Gordon has been with the FCEDA since 1983 and has led it since 1987, during which time office space in Fairfax County grew from 32 million square feet to more than 117 million, making it the second-largest suburban office market in the nation—and one with 10 Fortune 500 headquarters and top companies in a broad set of industry sectors including information technology, aerospace and defense, cybersecurity, data analytics, financial services and personalized medicine.

One goal of the Economic Development Authority is to promote Fairfax County as

a great place to locate a business, and increasingly one way we do that is through events that we either present or in which we participate as a partner, sponsor or exhibitor. Here are two examples that highlight very different parts of the Fairfax County business community and economy.

In July, the FCEDA exhibited for the first time at the Farnborough International Airshow, which is held outside of London and attracts the world’s aerospace sector—companies large and small that want to network, find customers, suppliers and partners, and learn about the latest developments in the industry.

The FCEDA went there to talk with companies from the U.K. and other parts of the world that want to expand in the U.S. market. Fairfax County has long been home to many of the most prominent aerospace companies—Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics are based here, for example, and Rolls-Royce has its North American headquarters here—and the combination of potential partners and customers in the private and public sectors continues to make this a natural location for any aviation company that wants to thrive.

Economic development is a relationship business, and our participation at Farnborough was enhanced by our partnership with two organizations that can introduce us to companies interested in a U.S. presence: the Farnborough Aerospace Consortium, which consists of aviation companies located in that region southwest of London, and Enterprise M3, which is an economic development organization active near Farnborough. By working the airshow with these groups, Fairfax County raised

its profile with firms that want to succeed on this side of the Atlantic.

Closer to home, the FCEDA will again raise its profile with firms in the digital media world when we present Social Media Week Fairfax on September 14 at Capital One headquarters in Tysons Corner.

This will be the second year in a row that the FCEDA has hosted a Social Media Week event. It brings together corporate executives, government communicators, senior marketers, entrepreneurs, influencers, bloggers and digitally connected consumers for a forum to consider the ways social media and technology are changing the methods we reach and react to one another.

This year’s theme is “Closer,” focusing on the interconnection of all people in the marketplace. And just as Fairfax County raises its profile in the aerospace industry by connecting with groups prominent in the field, the FCEDA does the same thing with SMWFairfax by partnering with the Social Media Week organization, which holds similar events in top technology locations around the world. Getting closer with this organization makes companies know that Fairfax County is in that top tier of business communities that attracts digital media firms, companies in emerging technologies of all kinds, and the talented workforce they want to attract and retain.

The FCEDA has collaborated with many partners over the years to develop one of the world’s best business locations, and similar partnerships in the years to come will help Fairfax County maintain its prominence in our traditional industry strengths and the leading business sectors of the future. n

News & NotablesFCEDA works with 23 companies to add more than 900 jobs to local economy in second quarter of 2018

In the second quarter of 2018, the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority worked with 23 companies and organizations that announced the addition of 943 jobs to the Fairfax County economy. Prominent announcements came from Appian, a Reston-based information technology company that is expanding and relocating to Tysons Corner, and the College Board, a Reston-

based membership organization that develops educational testing and represents more than 6,000 colleges and schools.

Appian announced it will retain 600 jobs and add 600 more as it shifts headquarters within the county. The College Board announced it is retaining 614 jobs and expanding with 120 new ones in Reston.

“Fairfax County is a world-class location for a software company,” said Appian CEO Matt Calkins, whose company has committed $28.4 million to its Fairfax County expansion. “We know we picked a good place. There are terrific employees around here who are intelligent, motivated, dynamic, creative and innovative. This is a great place to build an innovative business.”

Not every company adding employees has roots in Fairfax County. BitDam Ltd., an Israel-based cybersecurity company, established its presence in Reston this spring.

“Our leadership decided that the U.S. is the best choice to begin executing our expansion plans,” said Liron Barak, CEO of BitDam, which develops threat protection solutions for in-bound files and web links. “The FCEDA team made a great case for Fairfax County; the deep pool of high-quality cyber talent, strong technical infrastructure and robust transportation options make it an ideal starting point for our U.S. expansion while easily reaching back to our Tel Aviv headquarters.” n

News & NotablesFCEDA hosts governor at international airshow, tells crowd: Fairfax County is “where the best companies land”

MAG Aerospace relocation, Excivity expansion mean more jobs in Fairfax CountyMAG Aerospace, a leading independent provider of outsourced aerial intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance services, announced that it will invest $5.5 million to relocate and expand its corporate headquarters in the Fairfax area of Fairfax County. The move will create 120 new jobs, and the company is leasing 26,000 square feet of office space.

“Fairfax County provides an essential proximity to customers, along with the dedicated and talented workforce to serve those customers,” said Joe Fluet, MAG CEO. “We’re proud to call Fairfax County our home for years to come.”

MAG’s August 21 announcement came less than five weeks after the FCEDA and the Commonwealth of Virginia announced that Excivity, which specializes in cybersecurity technology, will create 45 new jobs and invest about $392,000 to expand its office space by 7,000 square feet near current headquarters in Chantilly. n

The FCEDA participated in the biennial Farnborough International Airshow, spotlighting its strong partnerships with aerospace, defense and economic

development organizations that work to increase trans-Atlantic commerce and trade. The show, held near London from July 16-22, provided an opportunity for the FCEDA to tout the county’s strengths as a hub for global aerospace and defense companies.

The FCEDA delegation, consisting of president and CEO Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., Jan E. Mul, director of international marketing, and Ian Metcalf, director of the FCEDA’s London office, was an exhibitor within the Farnborough Aerospace Consortium (FAC) pavilion.

On Tuesday, July 17, the FCEDA and FAC welcomed Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam and trade officials from the United Kingdom to the exhibit area. Northam attended the air show to promote Virginia as a location for defense and aerospace companies.

“During my trade mission to Europe, I delivered a simple message—that in Virginia our doors are wide open for business—and I want to continue our state’s great relationship with the international business community,” Northam said. “The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority has been carrying that message to overseas markets for decades and I was delighted to see the Authority at Farnborough telling aerospace and defense companies why Fairfax County is the ideal location for their U.S. operations.”

On Wednesday, July 18, the FCEDA and FAC hosted a networking event for air show attendees, and emphasized the benefits of working with groups such as Enterprise M3, a business-led partnership that helps to drive economic growth in Hampshire and Surrey counties near London. This region-to-region initiative has attracted the attention and support of U.K. government officials and members of Parliament.

Eight Fortune 500 aerospace companies have operations in Fairfax County, including Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics, which are headquartered in the county. Airbus and Rolls-Royce maintain their North American headquarters in the county, while other major aerospace employers include BAE Systems and Lockheed Martin.

Nine of the 10 largest global defense companies have operations in Fairfax County. In addition, defense companies in Fairfax County received $13.7 billion in Department of Defense contracts in fiscal 2017, making the county one of the largest recipients of federal contracts.

“Aerospace and defense companies thrive in Fairfax County,” said Gordon, adding that the FCEDA used its time at Farnborough to let the aviation world know that “this is where the best aerospace companies land.” n

“Social Media Week is the kind of interactive event that shines the spotlight on Fairfax County as a hotbed for emerging technologies and digital growth,” said Gerald L. Gordon, Ph.D., president and CEO of the FCEDA. “The global nature of SMW is in line with our efforts to showcase the county as a place where innovation, creativity, thought leadership and diversity are assets that contribute to both the community and its economic base.”

More than 300 attended the inaugural Tysons Corner event last year, prompting Brian Fanzo, the motivational millennial keynote speaker, to say he was “amazed” by the energy in the auditorium. “This county has the brand, the technology and the people. It’s now about amplifying that social media message and sharing the lens,” Fanzo said.

This year, in addition to a keynote conversation and panel discussions, SMWFairfax will feature an innovation hub, showcasing some of the latest tech devices from the worlds of artificial intelligence, virtual reality and wearable technology. n
