Ⅰ. Findings about Japan (Category: people ) Although westernized, they are deeply rooted to their tradition. People are kind, friendly, and they

respect human values and emotions. They follow all rules and regulations make their country

proud.

(Category: education ) The education system is more play way. But the students have clear concept. They are engaged in

club activities and co-curriculum activities. We feel the classes should be more formal.

(Category: technology ) Japan has a highly developed technology. They are using their technology for the protection of the

environment. Methodological and excellent traffic system.

(Others) Japan has taken effective steps in disposal of waste which keeps the ocean clean with green and

beautiful countryside. The steps taken to prevent global warming are appreciable.

Ⅱ. Details of Discussion(Topic: ) The main topics that revolved around the discussions were people, lifestyle, education system,

technology, governments and transportation. It is commendable that Japan has risen from the

ashes and blossomed into a nation that is as. Delicate people.

Ⅲ. Wrap-up / Conclusion If more encouragement and stress are given to spoken English, Japan will be able to sustain its

progressive mode and flourish by extending its strong arms to enable and the world and Asia to

reach the peak of human progress.

Workshop Report

Date:June 2, 2008 Group:Wakayama

Ⅰ. Findings about Japan 1)(Category:Balance between Technology and Culture ) Koyatown → world heritage site (spiritual place) + modern facilities and presence

of technologies in rural areas Tokyo → Asakusa, Sensoji Temple, Edo-Tokyo museum, Imperial Palace

2)(Category:Education )

Mathematics difficult to grasp for children Children don’t take education seriously; main focus; skill-based education, social welfare Sex ratio more towards males in rural schools No enthusiasm in English learning, spoken English poor 3((Category:Environment)

Efficient waste management Efficient use of resources e.g. land reclamation Sustainable development Less pollution (Others)4) Focus on metropolitan systems Traffic system of Tokyo → very effective

Excellent internal infrastructure 5) People Characteristics Kobo Daishi & Shingon Buddhism

Ⅱ. Details of Discussion(Topic:Balance between Technology and Culture )

Koya Town; has a history Tokyo; history doesn’t have much significance, more shift towards technological aspects. Counter point; Presence of Imperial Palace and recognition to the Royal Family → shows people are maintaining a balance.

History can’t be created at present. Maths → difficult to grasp Suggestion invite teachers from other countries for

teaching maths, activitiy & practical based classes. Pt2. Education not taken very seriously. Reason; secure future in Japan even if good educational future not there. ∵no

competition, life worth living matters. Compare with India focus on getting a secure future and a good job, cut throat competition Pt.3 Sex ratio more towards males in rural schools Reason schools in rural areas → religious.

Parents of girl children do not want them to become monks. Pt.4 No enthusiasm in English learning, poor speaking skills. → Eng. Compulsory only till junior school

most students opt out at higher level. → Eng. → global language, need of the hour Jap. → ultimate unifying power

Suggestion raise standard of teaching Make curriculum communicative Encourage students to learn Eng. (Topic; Environment) Pt.1 clasified way of locating the garbage + recycling → very efficient

For India This method should be implemented with 1) effective thinking 2) awareness among the people 3) cooperation between people and government 4) enforcement of laws and penalty on disobeyal

Pt.2 Efficient use of resources 75% of Japan → mountains and forests skyscrapers → accommodate large no. of people within a small area.

Artificial land of Odaiba Reclaimed land → on which no farming or any practice can be done

Conservation of flora and fauna in Hokkaido Pt.3 Less pollution in Japan Suggestion for India better technologies and effective implementation

(Topic; Focus on Metropolitan Systems) Pt.1 Traffic system including inter-city & intra city Trains, subways etc. → very effective

Separate tracks for jogging and cycling The Indian scenario + suggestion

★ variable and rough topography ★ large population ★ proper planning required ★ constructor and innovative ideas present

therefore proper implementation required Pt.2 Skyscrapers high rise buildings → accommodate many people in small ground area

subways and footpaths good rainwater drainage system (Topic; People) Pt1. Characters

1) Punctuality → biggest milestone

2) Dedication 3) Toleration towards other religions 4) Kindness, honesty, politeness 5) Excellent civic sense 6) Time management

Pt.2 Shingon Buddhism and Kobo Daishi Kobo Daishi 804 A.D. 31years old Crossed sea to China Tang dynasty in China 806 A.D. returned to Japan with ideas of Shingon sect. of Buddhism 816 A.D. built the Mt.Koya 835 A.D. entered eternal meditation Shingon Buddhism Shingon ; true word 1 of 18 schools in Shingon sect in Japanese Buddhism Ⅲ. Wrap-up / Conclusion

It is the people who make the country strong and developed. We learnt a lot, interacting with the Japanese people.

Workshop Report

Date: 2 June 2008 Group: Miyazaki

Ⅰ. Findings about Japan

(Category: People )

People are diligent, responsible, disciplined and strive to exceed in their respective fields. They respect their culture and tradition and are always warm and welcoming. (Category: Environment )

In spite high level of industrialization concern for environment has not taken a back seat. Disposal of waste done wonderfully. The pollution levels are under control and steps have been taken to protect wildlife. (Category: Technology )

Advancement in technological background negates lack of abundant natural resources. Technology has trickled down to individuals. Cutting edge technology of Japan is putting them way ahead in all fields. (Others)

Ⅱ. Details of Discussion(Topic: )

Our discussion was mainly about the culture, tradition, economy, education system, environment and discipline of Japan and Japanese people and comparing it with the Indian situation.

Ⅲ. Wrap-up / Conclusion

On the basis of our discussion we have decided to give the governments of India and Japan our suggestion. We would like the Japanese government to increase / develop the fluency of communicative English among Japanese people. We want to ask the Indian government to take up the policy of thinking schools.

Indian Students’ Comments

<Hyogo Group>

① Japan is a very technical, highly developed country which has preserved its

environment, cultural and traditional values. People are very emotional here and they

respect the values and cultures of other nations. The most important thing which

influenced me was the Japanese are very disciplined and punctual in their activities.

They do a lot of hard-work to make their country progress. Even if they are modernized

and westernized, traditions and cultures are deeply rooted in their lives. They are very

spiritual. They influence the others very soon. They use technology in every sphere of

life. When I went to the homestay, I came very close to the Japanese traditional life. But

when I went to school, the students were not obeying their teachers, they were singing,

dancing and talking to each other even in their teachers’ presence. They should

concentrate a bit more on the speaking in English and this would help their them to

progress faster in the long run.

ARIGATOU GOZAIMASITA.

I love incredible Japan

②JENESIS PROGRAM is very good. I am happy to this program. I learn some

Japanese lifestyle. Japanese culture is very good. Japanese technology is very fast,

example, water treatment center. Japan is very beautiful. I am happy with this

program.

③ I feel that this exchange program is really good and hope that it improves the ties

between the Asian countries and also hope that it exposes Japan more to the outside

world leading to overall development at a global level. I also hope to return to Japan

again, at least for educational purposes.

④ It was a dream come true. We had a wonderful experience. But if we would have had

a common language to communicate the interaction would have been much easier and

fruitful. It has helped me to gain knowledge and the experience here will help me in my

life. I am not feeling like going back.

⑤ It is very rightly called “Beautiful Japan”, for it is the most beautiful place I have

ever visited. Japan has a lot of potential-economically and technologically, but the only

barrier that stops it from expanding further is English. If a little more stress is put on

English language, Japan ought to reach the zenith of success.

Indian Students’ Comments

<Wakayama Group>

① People are truly dedicated, kind, polite, and gentle.

Technology is growing faster and faster.

The serene atmosphere is amazing.

I am looking forward to come to Japan again.

We love Japan.

② This is the best idea for changing our culture with other country culture.

The people of Japan they are really very nice, very polite and I can say what I am

feeling after visiting Japan.

OK.

Sayonara.

③ Impressions

1) Very nice way of understanding each other’s culture

2) We learnt a lot from this programme.

Suggestions

1) The programme was very tiresome.

We did not take rest well.

2) Length of stay should be increased up to 15-20 days.

④ This programme is a very good initiative taken by the Japanese government.

And I hope it will be successful in its aims.

I think the programme should focus more on interaction with Japanese students.

⑤ This entire programme has been able to develop my opinion and ideas about Japan.

It also managed to expand my friend circle beyond boundaries about, which I am

extremely happy.

This has managed for a national as well as international friendship.

Indian Students’ Comments

<Miyazaki Group>

① I am very much happy to participate in this programme. The organization of this

programme is a reflection of a good thinking. It will deepen the relationship

between India and Japan. Nowadays, we are actually living in a village named

global village. And everybody living in this village should know each other. To

fulfill this greater goal, this programme is a step we have to travel a long path.

② The 10-day programme by JENESYS and JICE has changed all of us totally. I am

impressed at kind of organization and planning done during the programme.

Every place visited had a lot of information about the technology, lifestyle, culture

and tradition of Japan. I would like to visit Japan once again to see all my friends

here. Thank you everyone who selected and helped us throughout the programme.

③ People at my hometown had warned me about the food here in Japan (I am a

vegetarian.). But you provided us with delicious Indian food or continental cuisine

everywhere, never making us feel homesick. One thing we Indians realized

through this programme was ‘Be on time, every time.’

④ The land of the rising sun is very beautiful. It is a new world for me. I by this

programme learned many different words, people and culture. I by this

programme was able to explore the land of rising sun, make new friends and

understand the need for building up a bridge between my country and Japan. By

this programme I was able to understand the Japanese and interact with them, as I

believe that the world is a global village and mutual understanding is an important

aspect.

⑤ Japan, the land of rising sun, a place every child would always desire to visit and for

us this moment arrived really early. This dream came true for all of us and we will

cherish it forever in our lives. The day we reached Japan, the first-thing that

amazed me was the traffic sense and cleanliness alongside the roads, be it anywhere.

Nextly, the magnificent skyscrapers left us spellbound. The helpful nature,

politeness, hard-work, friendliness of the Japanese astounded all of us. Technology

has trickled down to every individual. The time management of Japanese is

incomparable. Even though Japan is such a developed country, nature and

environmental improvements haven’t taken backseat. The education system being

equipped with technology and the introduction of thinking schools have helped in

development of the country. Lastly, the experience with the host family was the

best. The warmth with which we were welcomed is highly appreciable. We were

given opportunities to exchange views with Japanese youth and learn about

Japanese culture and tradition. We are glad to have been a part of this wonderful

programme.
