Many projects in South Africa are implemented with stakeholders from the triple partners that are entangled in the ‘triple helix’ model. The partnerships are seldom referred to as ‘triple helix’ but many are exactly that. There needs to be greater awareness of the amazing work that is being done collaboratively. Read the message . NSTF News NSTF to participate at the Department of Science and Innovation’s 2019 Innovation Bridge and Science Forum South Africa (IBSFSA) The NSTF will participate in the IBSFSA at the CSIR International Convention Centre from 4-6 December. An NSTF discussion forum in partnership with the NSTF Science Councils and Statutory Bodies Sector, called ‘Hurdles and opportunities along the way - career paths of researchers’ is being organised for 2-3 December as a pre- conference (or side-) event. The NSTF is also hosting a parallel session at the IBSFSA: under the theme: Responsible technology transfer: The North-South divide, entitled ‘Manufacturing & minerals processing - 4IR technologies SA needs to acquire'. The programme of the IBSFA should be available on the website soon. Call for nominations: NSTF- South32 Awards The ‘Call for nominations’ for the 2019/2020 NSTF-South32 Awards will be announced on the NSTF website and distributed at the beginning of November. The Awards Gala Dinner is expected to take place at the beginning of July 2020. There are no changes to the Awards categories , apart from the new theme, which will be announced in the call for nominations. So please start thinking of suitable candidates for these prestigious Awards. New NSTF member The NSTF welcomes a new member: Rapid Product Development Association of South Africa (RAPDASA) – Civil Society Sector Presentations and proceedings from previous Discussion Forums available 2019 SA Innovation Summit Videos and presentations of the three-day NSTF Discussion Forum titled “ Advanced manufacturing and automation: potential and challenges ” are now available on the NSTF website. Also available is the media release , titled ‘SA’s advanced manufacturing industry takes charge’. The Discussion Forum took place at the 2019 SA Innovation Summit . 2018 SA Innovation Summit The NSTF presented a Discussion Forum on the implications of the fourth industrial revolution for SET, industry, society and education at the 2018 SA Innovation Summit. The proceedings have now been updated to incorporate a full set of minutes of the three-day event. 2019 NSTF Annual General Meeting NSTF members are invited to join us on 15 November for the 2019 NSTF Annual General Meeting (AGM). A formal invitation and further details will follow. An open Seminar will follow the AGM as usual. The topic will be announced and an invitation will be sent out soon. Department renamed The Department of Science and Technology was renamed to the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) in mid-2019. The DSI is a founding member of the NSTF since 1995. Share ‘n Dare activities Professor Leslie Petrik, who leads the University of the Western Cape's Environmental and NanoScience Research Group, addressed a group of 61 girl learners at iThemba LABS on 13 September. She is the 2017/2018 winner of the NSTF-Water Research Commission Award of the NSTF-South32 Awards . Professor Fosso-Kankeu Associate Professor: School of Chemical and Minerals Engineering, North-West University , inspired learners from three schools in the Mafikeng area to be successful and encouraged them to consider careers in engineering.
