President’s News

The past month saw Club members enjoying a number of social events including, of course, the 24th Safety Fast Run. This year’s event was once again a credit to members of the organising committee from the MGCC, the MG Owners Club and the TC Owners Club, ably led by Terry Banton, who worked very hard to produce yet another superb weekend of MG driving and camaraderie. While it was a damp start on Saturday, the weather improved over the event and most roadsters travelled top down on Sunday. The Saturday night venue in Bunbury, the Quality Hotel Lighthouse, was comfortable and the dinner and breakfast catering was excellent. Next year’s Safety Fast Run will be the 25th Anniversary of this iconic MG event and Terry promises that the SFR committee will be pulling out all the stops to make it a truly memorable Run, centred on Margaret River and extending over a 3 day period. The Southern Chapter, which has enjoyed a very successful year, held a social run on October 2nd and a report on this is included elsewhere in this Octagon. The October Midweek Run, organised by Doug and Christine Bush, also proved to be enjoyable and as usual attracted a range of classic British sports cars. As I managed to turn up in an E-Type Jaguar, I was instructed to write up the report for the Octagon! Coming Club events in November include the “Have a Go Day” at Burswood organised by Val Goff and the “Bell Boys Bash” coordinated by Colin and John Bell for both Southern Chapter members and those Club members who reside further north. Details are in this Octagon. The Club’s new 5 year User Agreement with the City of Bayswater for the continued use of our Whatley Hall clubrooms was formally agreed by Council at its October Ordinary Meeting. While this effectively secures leasehold tenure over our premises for this period, there is no certainty that the Council will support further Agreements beyond this timeframe and it would be prudent for the Club to consider contingency planning in this respect. A note for your diary: the Club’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 13th December. The Club Committee for 2017 will be elected at the AGM and I am pleased to report that nominations have now been received for (almost) all Committee positions. The Club’s new Constitution and Bylaws will be presented for adoption, as required by the Associations and Incorporations Act 2015, while the Club Awards and Trophies will also be presented to deserving winners on the night. The evening will commence at 6.30pm with a light supper and complimentary drinks.

Southern Chapter Run - Sunday 2nd October A total of six MG's met at the Crooked Carrot, Myalup by 9.45 for a 10.30 departure. First of all I would like to thank Jessie and Steve McDonald for organising a great run. We would also like to thank Graham and Moyra Mitchinson for traveling all the way from Perth to participate in the Southern Chapter run. We all enjoyed a cup of coffee prior to our departure on our roughly 84km run through the Ferguson Valley.

The weather wasn’t too good as we left the cafe but I am glad to say improved during the day. We only had an odd sprinkle to two along with the occasional sunny periods with Jessie and Steve leading the way we had a really relaxing and easy run with time to take in the scenery along the twisting and sometimes undulating roads into the Ferguson Valley to our scheduled stop at Gnomesville.

There we took a 10 minute break to walk around the various gnomes on display. It has grown into a vast area encroaching into a nearby farmers field which we think could prove to be a future problem. We then continued our journey along picturesque roads, there being lots of recent rain and consequently everywhere was very green with a scattering of cattle farms.

After a very enjoyable run we all duly arrived at our lunchtime venue which was called Ferguson Farmstay which is situated on a hilltop with sweeping views all the way to Bunbury. You can actually see the shape of a milk carton on the horizon which is the Lord Forrest Hotel in Bunbury.

Great view from the Restaurant window

The restaurant was rather quiet due to the weather, so nobody had to wait very long for lunch to be served. We all thought the meals were very good and plentiful. The group spent lots of time having a laugh, eating and a few drinks, so I think a good day was had by all. Roll on the Bell Boys Bash!

the FasTForward way Christmas Celebration

Sunday December 11th

The Autumn Run was delayed a little, due to some minor issues, however all in the past for now! With the delay we discovered a great opportunity to get together before Christmas and have a FasTForward WAy Christmas “get-together” .

Derek and Chris Slaney have graciously volunteered to organize the run and this note is just to let everyone know the event is happening and give you an opportunity to book it into your calendar. All members are welcome.

We will conclude with lunch in the Two Rocks area and because we drive “Moderns” even if the weather be hot, we will not. (If the A/C is cooperating.)

We are hopeful that Peter and Patty Mittler will be back in OZ with a sharpened Canadian accent, so it will be good to see them again.

And just a reminder that our run is just before the AGM which occurs on the second Tuesday of December. Dawn and I return from holidays on the 7th December so we should be ready to celebrate Christmas with you.

Further information will be provided as to the commencement point and time. Have a great FasTForward Way day.

SOUTHERN CHAPTER RUN BELL BOYS BASH 20 NOVEMBER 2016

As this is our last planned social run for 2016, Karen and I would like to see as many MG members as possible taking part. Therefore, if you are living in the Fremantle/Baldivis areas and all points South, please come and join us. The weather should also be better for our 90 km run through the South West countryside. We plan to meet at the Harvey Cheese Factory at Wokalup (South West Highway) by 10 am. This enables people who would like to have a coffee prior to our leaving at 10.30am. Karen and I have planned a short run as we want to be at our lunch destination no later than 12 noon. John Bell, Social Coordinator MGCCWA, is planning a similar run leaving from the MG clubrooms, so as to meet roughly for lunch at the same time. Our luncheon venue is the Ravenswood Hotel on Pinjarra Road. A seating area has been set aside for the MG car club. It is also a good venue as the highway North and South is just around the corner, making it easy for everyone to drive home. We have planned no events for December because of Christmas and School holidays and the annual AGM on 13th December. The next event is planned for some time in January 2017, hopefully a picnic run. Keep watching this space. Lastly, Karen and I would like to thank all MGCCWA members who have supported the Southern Chapter during 2016. Have a great Christmas and Happy MG motoring in 2017.

It’s on again the annual Bell Boy’s Bash. There will be two runs again this year one starting down south for the Southern Chapter members and the other starting from the Club Rooms for those of us further north. We will all meet at a central location

Midweek Run Thursday 13th October

Around 30 classic British sports cars assembled on Thursday 13th October at Gingers Roadhouse on Great Northern Hwy for the Midweek Run, this month organised by Doug and Christine Bush on behalf of the MGCC. The usual assembly area was squeezy due to a broken-down semi trailer parked awaiting mechanical salvation, but everyone coped admirably even when other huge semi trailers threaded their way past to the fast-flow diesel pumps.

As usual, the Run was dominated by MGs and Austin Healeys and the fine weather encouraged most crews to drive top down. The Jaguar contingent continues to grow, with a couple of E-Types and Ian Maitland’s superb XK150 DHC being among others participating. Doug and Christine provided clear route directions (including one instruction to “ignore No Through Road sign”!) and an “Observation Challenge” with questions to answer along the route. The 95km run, which headed south from Gingers instead of north, included some old favourite driving roads such as the ‘rollercoaster’ Lancewood Avenue and the winding and scenic O’Brien and Berry Roads.

13

The route traversed the Wundowie town and rusting old steelworks before passing through Wooroloo, Chidlow, Mount Helena and Stoneville to reach our destination, the Parkerville Tavern. Lunch was a very convivial affair in the pub’s outdoor garden area and the food and company were excellent. Fortunately, the resident kookaburra was nowhere in sight so there were no aerial attacks on our food! Many thanks are extended to Doug and Christine for organising a thoroughly enjoyable drive.

2016 SAFETY FAST RUN

15th and 16th October At 6am Saturday Morning I looked outside and the weather looked quite bleak. I sadly went out and put up the side curtains and hood. TC 9549 was in for a wet day and set off for the Elizabethan Village at Armadale. When we arrived we were greeted with a hot bacon and egg muffin and nice cup of tea. The convoy of 60+ MG's left at 9am and drove to Dwellingup for morning tea, the countryside was lush and green and besides the rain showers the scenery was picturesque.

Drove on into Collie via the Williams-Collie Road and thankfully the sun came out in bursts. Rhonda and I were like two bugs in rugs, quite snug in the TC with the trusty XPAG keeping us warm.

Page 15: TheThe OctagonOctagon - MG Car Club Canberramgcccanberra.org.au/test/wp-content/uploads/Octagon-2016-Novembe… · by Val Goff and the “ell oys ash ... Neale and heryl ooper -Red

15

After filling up with petrol in Collie we then went into the Ferguson Valley and the CWA Ladies provided a tasty lunch at the local community hall. We then went through Donnybrook to Bunbury to the newly renovated Lighthouse Inn arriving at 3pm. TC 9549 ran like a Swiss watch and when we parked up at the Lighthouse Inn was admired by numerous MGB owners. Still amazes me the effect TC's have on people, particularly other MG owners.

Dinner at the Lighthouse was a very tasty buffet and there lots prizes for the sharp eyed participants, sadly Rhonda and I were not sharp enough. After dinner the music started and Rhonda eyes lit up, as did many other wives. Soon the dance floor was soon filled and we danced to many oldies and an occasional newie. Great night! Sunday morning we all were treated to a hot breakfast or a continental for the more sensible of us. We set off via the Bunbury Harbour Drive and then through to Australind via the old road alongside

the Estuary. Very pretty with some low flying Albatrosses enhancing the view. On we went to the Harvey Cheese Factory and sampled their fine wares. My waistline was not getting any better so went on Harvey township for Cappuccino to wash the cheese down. We then did a tour of Yarloop and whilst repairs are underway the sad scars still remain of that fateful day in January.

The final leg of the tour took us to Mandurah Country Club which we arrived at out 1.10pm. The Mandurah Country Club prepared a sumptuous roast for us for lunch, either Beef and or Pork with lashings of roast vegetables and gravy, a vegetarian option was also available. The sweets we equally as impressive with a choice Pavlova, fresh

fruit salad or lemon tart and the usual coffee or tea. We all then headed for home at around 3pm. Rhonda and I had a fabulous time and the weekend could only be described as very well run and above all great fun for all the guys and girls.

Put October 21st, 22nd & 23rd October 2017 in your diaries, The 25th Anniversary of the Safety Fast Run will be held for the first time as a two night event at Margaret River. The Safety Fast Committee of which I am now part of will be organizing a fun filled weekend. The focus will be on making it as much fun for the girls as it is for the boys. I was the only TC at The Safety Fast this year so let us see if we can get a fine line up of Square riggers in Margaret River next year.

Agreement with the City of Bayswater, which should give us another 5 years of tenure. However we must bear in mind that we may well be obliged to make a decision in the next 5 years regarding our future premises. The new user agreement will result in increased rental charges and we will in future have to pay Rates, Electricity and Water charges. The land (including the adjacent tennis court block) and the Clubrooms are owned by the City of Bayswater and in the future could be re-zoned for urban development and sold by the Council. Our security of tenure is just five years, assuming we get a new User Agreement. The following cheques were proposed for authorisation; D Pitcher – Raffle Prize $35.53; D Bush - Last months supper and postage $63.99; Allsports trophies – Name badges $120-00. Proposed by Chris Hart and seconded by Val Goff and approved by the meeting.

Membership Sec’s Report: Richard G proposed the following new member application be approved: Vince Troth, Caroline Patmore, David Katz, Neal & Cheryl Cooper. The proposal was seconded by Annette Gusterson and warmly approved by the meeting. Richard reported that the financial membership now stands at 247, which is seven more than last month, a very good achievement for the club.

Competition: Rami B has apologised for tonight. Tony advised that there are a couple of Competition events coming up. Firstly, the VSCC ‘Vintage Stampede’ being held at Barbagallo on 27th November, which is included in the Club ‘Vintage Sports Champion’ series. There is also a Motorkhana on the 30th October at the old DTC in Neerabup. If members are interested in either of these, contact Peter Hagarty. Then for the forthcoming weekend, club members have been invited to take their MGs to the Shannons Classic at Barbagallo, which feature racing by Formula 5000 V8 race cars.

Social Report: John B advised that the ‘Bell Boys Bash’ would be on Sunday 20th November, details are on the website and in the November Octagon. A Twilight Run in conjunction with the Rolls Royce Owners Club will take place on January 15th. A Volunteer is needed to organise the Twilight Run and other Social runs next year. It is not a strenuous task and plenty of guidance is available within the club. Email John if you can assist. Editors: Graham advised nothing to report. Moyra then said that the “country members in southern rural areas have quickly become involved in organising runs in their area and yet the members in the Metro area don’t seem to be so willing. We should be able to do better than this”.

Safety Fast: Terry B de-briefed members on the weekend SFR, which all agreed had been a MaGnificent weekend, with 58 cars participating. Good teamwork by all involved. Sat 23 to Mon 25th October 2017 will be the 25th SFR, it will be a 3 day event based in Margaret River. The organising committee will be working hard to produce a great event. Once details are announced members are recommended to book early. The lunches on Saturday & Sunday will again be provided by the local CWA. If members are thinking of going, please let Terry B know by email ASAP. A very warm vote of thanks was given by the meeting to Terry, Wanda and their team for another MaGic Safety Fast Run.

Club Captain: Graham F presented badges to new members, David Katz, Rod Ewan, Neil & Cheryl Cooper.

Regalia: Chris H promoted the ‘Sale Items’ on the table at 50% off. He then showed the meeting the two colours of a new Polo shirt, Red & Grey, and canvassed the meeting on their likely purchases by colour & size. It was also agreed by the lady members present, that we should not purchase ‘Ladies’ sizes.

Librarian: David P advised that the two ‘Coffee Table” books, ‘The Mighty Magnettes of 33’ and ‘Red Dust Racers’ by Grahame Cox, a local motoring historian are available for loan, they are an excellent read and available to borrow through him.

Webmaster: Ian C advised that all was up to date on the website. ANY OTHER BUSINESS:

1. Doug reminded members of the forthcoming AGM on Tuesday 13th December at

which the Constitution & By-Laws would be put forward for adoption. It commences at 18:30 with supper and free drinks. 2. Tony F advised that we had received nominations for all Committee positions

except the Social Secretary. Tony was standing down at the AGM after three years as president. 3. Doug then gave a brief update on the CMC General Meeting and the CODE 404

(concessional licensing) position. Little real progress has been made within the Dept of Transport. The position regarding ‘Impromptu Runs’ which was mentioned in his recent e-mail to all members is that officially, that part of the Code is not yet gazetted and is therefore not in operation. The next Club committee meeting will discuss this aspect, before guidance is issued to members. What is fact is that all Club ‘Runs’ must be listed in the Club Register or Calendar, for members to legally use their Concessionally licensed cars. The other point raised was ‘Do the WA Car Club Members still want the ‘Classic Car Show’ which has been held annually at Whiteman Park for many years. A short survey on the subject will be circulated to all club members ASAP. 4. Tony F advised that longstanding Club member Patrick Reed was selling his

exceptionally good MGA Twin-Cam, he had brought it along tonight and anybody interested should talk to Patrick. He would like to see the car remain in Perth. Terry B asked if any members had any spare older Safety Fast Run plates that they are prepared to donate to the club for display at the clubrooms, would they please contact him.

Meeting closed at 21:12

Supper was provided by Colleen Hardie.

SHANNON CLASSIC 22nd & 23rd OCTOBER AT BARBAGALLO RACEWAY

What a truly fabulous experience it was! - to witness the sight of the largest group of Formula 5000 single seater V8 race cars from Australia and New Zealand at our local Barbagallo Raceway. This was their first race here since the 1979 WA F1 Championship - an absence of some 37 years!

Our Club was invited, with other historic car clubs, to display 12 MGs on both the Saturday and Sunday for this very special event - and this was comfortably achieved. Our display was positioned on the grass banking surrounding the first corner at the end of the start/finish straight. A superb viewpoint!

What a spectacle those 5 litre awe-inspiring V8s provided, accompanied, Annette and I reckoned, with indescribable noise. (A great sound sadly missing from current F1 race cars). Later we were proved wrong, totally wrong on the noise level. Later we walked round to witness the start of one of the Formula 5000 races. The sound there, trapped between the grandstand and the new

Super V8s pits was magnified beyond belief. Annette (and I) were most impressed! They are not only noisy but super quick and powerful, of course. It must be an unbelievable thrill to race one.

At the lunch break, the Formula 5000s were lined up on the starting grid and the public invited to come out on to the track and take a close look. The "up close and personal" thrilled many of the crowd and certainly our Club members. Very impressive machines.

If you need convincing just take a look at the photos accompanying this article, which have been provided by Peter Hagarty. Many thanks Peter for the visuals.

The Formula 5000s were backed up by a great supporting program of Formula Junior Diamond Jubilee World Tour (before heading to the eastern states and then on to New Zealand) , Formula Vee Nationals and a huge field of Historic Touring Cars.

Overall a fantastic, unique, international and thoroughly enjoyable weekend. There were rumours this event could be repeated? Only rumours - but if it ever becomes reality - make sure you are there!
