Notes from the Chairman Greetings all.
Here we are again and it’s October already, we are past the equinox and the longer nights will be
encouraging us to spend more time in our workshops.
Only two months to go till competition night so I hope that you are thinking about what you will be
putting on the tables.
There will be the usual three competitions, i.e.
Ralph Jones Trophy - any form of turning with entry open to all members.
The Robert Saunders Trophy - bowls only with entry open to all members.
The Novices Trophy - any form of turning by novice turners.
Last month we had a demonstration by Mick Hanbury which I’m sure we all enjoyed and learned
something from.
As you know we have another all day demonstration on October 3rd when we will be visited by Sue
Harker. Sue is an innovative and artistic woodturner so I am sure that it will be a good day. Please
come along and support the club’s commitment to continue presenting demonstrations by professional
turners.
In 2014 some members successfully took part in Norjam, which is an international Jamboree, with
Bron Simpson doing a great job as project manager. Norjam is organised by the local scouting
association and will be held again in 2018 and they would like to include wood turning again.
Therefore we have to decide whether to take part again. I know it seems a long way off but these
things take a long time to organise so we need to let them know whether will take part or not so that
they can contact another club.
If Norwich Woodturners are to take part in a leading role we will need a project manager to take on
the work that Bron did last time, together with others to help and act as tutors at the event.
I asked Bron to write an article which you find below, this gives her thoughts about what would be
needed and the commitment required.
Please think about this and if you are willing volunteer to take on the job of project manager or tutor
please talk to me. As we are looking more than two years ahead it would be good to have two or three
joint project managers to spread the workload.
I can’t think of anything else to write now and Paul can’t wait any longer so see you on Friday.

Last Months Club Night Demonstration by Mick Hanbury
Mick demonstrated the making of one of his new
square boxes and the various techniques he uses
for colouring and texturing them
The box demonstrated was a 100mm cube with 35mm holes drilled from all six sides that meet in the
middle. Small round boxes are then turned to fit in each of the holes (not demonstrated).
The coloured boxes are painted black using acrylic paint
and foam pads, Mick prefers this way to minimise and
paint getting the holes. The spray patterns are created by
applying paint and then turning the lathe on a various
speeds. A plastic bowl is used to reduce mess.
The carved embellishments are created using a micro
motor tool and a range of shaped burrs and cutting discs.
Sometimes the burr cuts the pattern, other times the fric-
tion produced by the tool makes the desired mark.

Norwich Woodturner’s participation in Norjam
You may remember that we took part at Norjam in August 2014 at the Norfolk Showground and I have
recently been reminded that preparations will soon commence for the 2018 Norjam.
The Norfolk International Jamboree has become well known throughout the UK and the Scouting and
Guiding worlds and offers a life changing experience to those who attend. The organisers often see
some 4000 young people with over 1000 adults involved in the delivery. A world of difference from
1918 to 2014 but one thing remains the same, the delivery of a quality experience for young people
from different backgrounds: ‘like plums in a pudding, all mixed up’, Baden-Powell once said.
In 2014 we provided turners to man several lathes in the craft area. I am now asking members to think
whether they want to be involved in this event again. Volunteers will not need to spend the whole
week there, but to be available for a few sessions during the week. The Scouts will first be given a safe-
ty talk, and then after ensuring that they are suitably attired, i.e. no flip flops, will go into the lathe area
where they will be instructed by you, to turn something really simple like a spirtle, mushroom, or dib-
ber during a 30 minute period. There will also be a need for demonstrators in the display area.
You may feel that to take on the role of tutor is not for you but there is plenty of time to do the AWGB
Instructor Training ‘Let’s Teach Turning’. All you have to do, if you have a computer, is to download
the free e-learning course from the AWGB website or the club could I am sure manage £16 for a copy
of the DVD for the library, if it has not already done so. The course takes about 2.5 hours to complete
but you can do it at your own speed. On completion you can then if you wish attend an assessment day
to get a well earned AWGB Approved Tutor Badge. There couldn’t be a simpler way to get that confi-
dence to work with these prospective enthusiastic young people.
The club will need a Co-ordinator to take charge of the event. I have all the documentation and know
all the stages that have to be addressed to put this on and I will work with anyone that will have a go. I
myself will not be taking on this role although I may very well be there to help with the display and
souvenir tables. It will be necessary to approach other clubs to make up the numbers for turners and
demonstrators as the event stretchers over five days.
If the membership decide not to go ahead with this then the Events Secretary may wish to suggest that
the Scouting organisation approach other Norfolk clubs to see if they will take it on. The East Herts club
that so kindly assisted me last time have said that they cannot be responsible for organising it because
of the distance involved but they may very well attend as helpers and offer equipment support for the
week.
If the Club will take on the role of organising this prodigious event Jon and I will be more than happy to
help as volunteers. It is a valuable learning and enjoyable experience for both the young people and
the wood turners themselves.
