Hello everyone! My name is Elizabeth Fabio, and I am about to end my term as Regent this quarter. I want to start off by saying thank you to all of my brothers in this chapter. Without you guys, we would not be here almost a year after our installation as Sigma Delta chapter. We have accomplished so much throughout the past year by establishing chaptergoals for everything from fundraising to focusing on our three pillars. Throughout the year, people would volunteer for certain chapter goals and come back to meetings with reports on theirprogress. Through these chapter goals, we were able to hit a fundraising mark of $500 last quarter. Also, we have established project goals this quarter by building a catapult. Recently, we built a small-scale model for MESA night, and we plan on designing a bigger one. Next year we are looking to apply our projects related to community service and philanthropy. Through these chap-ter goals, we are also able to strengthen our professionalism. Another short-term chapter goal we accomplished is compiling a resume book before the Engineering & Technology Fair. Along with this, we were able to set up a successful LinkedIn Workshop & Professional Photoshoot event with PFC. Outside of chapter goals, our brotherhood is stronger than ever. We have planned events at least every other week ranging from bowling to trips to LA. Also, we have our spontaneous brotherhood gatherings such as late night BBQs at the park. Overall, Theta Tau has given me more than what I could ever expect. I started off as an only child and have gained more than 50 brothers in the last two years. Every year we receive more and more brothers that will continue to further the goals of Theta Tau.

sums up why I want to be apart of Theta Tau.”

“I would love to work in an environment were I can be creative. Living by myself, I learned to love cooking so maybe

in the future I can combine both interest in

my career.”

“My dream career would be to become an Imagineer for Disney. I would love to help bring

the magic to life by developing and improving their animatronics.”

“I teach piano to kids age 6-16. I also write original music for my

band and sometimes we play weddings.”

For the first time in Sigma Delta Chapter’s history, brothers fromTheta Tau have joined the ranks of ASUCR. Jason Ramirez andCarlton Nguyen swept last spring’s elections, claiming both BCOEsenator seats. “We were nervous.” Nguyen said. “I could never seemyself doing something like [running for senate]. Jason wanted to doit for his own reasons, and he convinced me.” Though the job comeswith its fair share of meetings and paperwork, both Nguyen andRamirez have found projects to help BCOE and UCR as a whole.“It’s interesting to say the least.” Ramirez said. “I wouldn’t say it’sfun, but I would say it’s rewarding.” “I get to do projects for thebenefit of BCOE.” Nguyen added. “Not everyone can say they can dothat.” Nguyen’s current project is aimed toward helping students gainpractical work experience during their undergraduate career. “One of the projects I was talking with Jun [Wang] about was making an easier and more convenient way for students to get internships.” Nguyen said. “Jun wanted students to be able to get internships and working experience really easily so they can have a leg up on the competition. My goal was to reach out to local companies; smaller companies in the area that would be interested in hiring UCR students.”Ramirez, however, decided to focus more on student life at UCR. “Project DTR is a project that I was advocating while I was campaigning.” Ramirez said. “I don’t like that UCR doesn’t have a better social scene or a better night life. If you go to places like UCLA and walk down the street, there are all kinds of restaurants and other places that all students know about. Even places where the downtown isn’t so close, everyone is at least in contact with some social scene, and that’s what UCR lacks.” Ramirez hopes to incorporate downtown Riverside with UCR in order to improve campus culture. “Downtown Riverside has the art walk that happens every first Thursday of the month. They have museums that have free admission for students with UCR ID, but nobody knows about this stuff. This project aims to assimilate the whole downtown scene and attempt to get students down there. Senator Colette King is working on a transportation system to get students downtown from UCR. Right now, it’s like UCR and Riverside are separate things, and we need to mold that gap.” Though Ramirez and Nguyen ran together, they have both found their passions and projects that matter to them. They have been working hard to improve both BCOE and UCR as a whole by making them stronger institutions both professionally and socially. Their work is helping BCOE students get opportunities for work experience as well as help-ing UCR become a more fun and enjoyable place for students to live.

Theta Tau brothers from Sigma Delta, Pi Delta and UCLA at Western Digital

Brothers in Theta Tau’s Sigma Delta Chapter have had amazing opportunities to grow professionally this quarter. Events aimed toward personal growth and networking have increased in both quality and quantity. On Friday, January 23rd, our Professional Development Chair, Winrich Sy, helped bring neighboring Theta Tau Chapters together for a company tour at Western Digital. Theta Tau members had a chance to develop connections with brothers from other chapters while getting a good look at what an engineering company is like. “It’s a really well known company,” Sy said “especially in engineering and different fields, because they don’t only hire people from computer science and engineering. They also have people working from the Mechanical Engineering perspective, Electrical Engineering perspective, even Bioengineering.” Theta Tau also hosted the Professional Fraternity Council’s Linked[in] Workshop on Thursday, February 19th, in cooperation with the National Honor Fraternity Phi Sigma Pi and the Pre-Law Fraternity Phi Alpha Delta. Attendees had the opportunity to take professional pictures for their profiles, courtesy of Theta Tau’s Paul Tran, while Alexis Dennis of Phi Sigma Pi gave a presentation about what employers look at when considering a Linked[in] profile. The Bourns College of Engineering has gathered more interest in this event each year and we hope to continue this event while expanding it to the rest of the university. The brothers of Theta Tau Sigma Delta Chapter would like to thank Professional Development Chairs: Winrich Sy and Alan Nguyen for their wonderful year of service. We also welcome next year’s Professional Development Chairs: Alan Nguyen for a second term and Alexander Chang. Sy will be graduating in Spring of 2015 with a degree in Computer Science. While he aspires to become an Indie-game developer in the future, he is also considering a pursuit in obtaining a Master’s degree. Before transferring his position, Sy gives these words to the new chairs: “Take initiative”, “Communicate”, and “Appreciate.” We wish him the best of luck as he moves on to bigger and better things.

The annual BCOE Dodgeball Tournament took place on Wednesday, February 26 and for the first time in tournament history, Theta Tau claimed this year’s spot on the champion’s trophy. With two teams in the tournament, Sigma Delta Chapter had a higher chance of winning than in previous years. “We formed a competitive and an uncompetitiveteam.” Howie Pascual said. “I wanted to make my own team, which just so happened to be called the uncompetitive team. Which is kind of funny. The whole time we just wanted to emphasize that we were the B team and make it super ironic. Then we wanted to build a secret super team with Ben [Davis] and Carlton [Nguyen].” The strategy worked, and after four rounds the B Team came out on top. “We’re going to put TT B team on the trophy.” Pascual said, chuckling to himself. “We just wanted to play off of the fact that we were supposed to be the worst team, and we still ended up winning.”
