types of skin cancer and every individual can lower their risk by using various precautions.

Introduction Using a tanning bed, booth, or sunlamp to get tan is

called “indoor tanning.” Indoor tanning has been linked with skin cancers including melanoma (the deadliest type of skin cancer), squamous cell carcinoma, and cancers of the eye (ocular melanoma).

Tanning beds cause about 1,800 injuries requiring visits to the emergency room every year

A tan is a response to injury: skin cells respond to damage from UV rays by producing more pigment

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 3.5 million skin cancers in over two million people are diagnosed annually

Melanomas usually are larger in diameter than the size of the eraser on your pencil (1/4 inch or 6 mm), but they may sometimes be smaller when first detected.

Evolving

Any change — in size, shape, color, elevation, or another trait, or any new symptom such as bleeding, itching or crusting — points to danger.

Laws California, Illinois, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, and

Vermont have banned the use of tanning beds by minors

Brazil and one state in Australia (New South Wales) have banned the use of tanning beds.

The United Kingdom, Germany, Scotland, France, several Australian states, and several Canadian provinces have banned indoor tanning for people younger than age 18.

In CT, parental permission is required to tan.

Tanning Salon’s Profit The indoor tanning industry has annual estimated

revenue of $5 billion

My Opinion Although obvious, my opinion is that nobody should

use a tanning bed.

Use sunless tanning salons or sprays if necessary.

Always use sunscreen and reapply often.

Go to a dermatologist once a year to get a skin check.

Be confident in who you are without feeling the need to be tan.

What can YOU do? Avoid sunlight between 10 am and 4 pm (daylight

time) when the sun's rays are strongest

Avoid indoor tanning devices and sun lamps

Use and re-apply sunscreen when exposed to UV rays

Cover skin with clothing and wear hats and sunglasses
