Wow, onto Issue 8 already i t ’ s been such a hect ic month. Some bands were unable to send inter views and stories due to being so busy. However, a b ig thanks to everyone who could meet my deadl ine.

“Stuntman Mike” is this month’s cover band. This band has the biggest cover feature so far in the Rockette magazine ! A massive 23 pages including them inter viewing me, they were kind didn’t get to personal . The band also sent me a free EP and T-shir t , their song “chemical” on the EP has been on repeat a lot , It is now also my r ingtone, love i t ! !

There was 3 EP reviews this month, “Arron Brown” who you may remember from his last review I did , “Armonight” who where in last month’s issue and of course “Stuntman Mike” . I was also lucky enough to inter view “Make This Relate” a fter they played at T in the Park. The LaFontaines have just released a new video cal led “Paper Chase” and I was lucky to get an inter view with them about i t .

This was the f ir st t ime I have let a band inter view me in a magazine. It was a lot of fun, (haha) may consider doing i t again ! Any bands want a shot at inter viewing me? Let me know.

I had my f ir st salon experience the other day. I ’m going back, gett ing hair and nai ls done next t ime! Gett ing whacky hair cut , way my mum wouldn’t do i t (haha) . I cant wait . . .

Thanks for reading!

ArmonightEp Review

This band comes from Vicenza in I ta ly. They are lead by Lara & Fjord! The band has been together s ince 2007, after some l ine-up changes, Ricky (drums) and Sy (voice) jo in the crew. With this formation, the band started to record their f i rst fu l l - length EP, “Suffer ing and Pass ion”. I was very excited to get a copy to review!

Track 1 – RevengeA purely instrumental f i rst t rack proves th is band deserve to be heard! The track has a dark and powerful beat with a h int of sc i -f i , at least to begin with; th is t rack proves you don’t a lways have to s ing to be a great band. “Revenge” was an excel lent name for th is t rack, however I was expect ing a dramatic end, what I got was tota l ly d i fferent .

Track 2 – Past ShadowsThe intro to th is appears to fo l low stra ight on from the previous track. A not iceably faster beat than on the previous track. Sy ’s haunt ing voice carr ies the lyr ics

perfect ly. This song has an ‘ E v a n e s c e n c e ’ feel to i t and was just amazing. Amy Lee watch out!

Track 3 - Free Spir i tThis track has a catchy drum kick start to the intro. The lyr ics to th is t rack were very se l f explanatory about being a f ree spir i t . Again, Sy ’s voice was perfect for the whole feel of the track. A very s imi lar pace and beat to the previous track, but watch out for the banging guitar so lo about two-thirds through

Track 4 – EmotionsLong s low piano intro to th is t rack, before the drumming and guitars k ick in with a much

heavier feel than the previous tracks . The powerful lyr ics carry wel l ; seamless ly b lending with the music to create a perfect “emotional” harmony. “Emotions” is a beaut i fu l ly smooth track which should appeal to fans of Halestorm, as i t sounds very s imi lar to their bal lads!

Track 5 – Into my worldThis track begins with very fast drumming , guitars and keys. The lyr ics again, are fantast ica l ly myst ic , even the soft ly spoken sect ion! The music f lows melodica l ly through the track help ing to create

Page 7: theRockette - issue 8

another p iece of br i l l iance.Track 6 - What we wereThis track begins with a s low bui ld up from the keyboard. I t p icks up a l i tt le pace when the guitar jo ins in and a musica l intro cont inues for the f i rst minute or so of the track. Sy ’s d ist inct ive

v o c a l s and the turbulent beat of the drums carry the track through to a short but ear-spl i tt ing e lectr ic so lo about a minute from the end, then cont inuing smoothly to the end.

Track 7 - Heavens belowA br isk wind howls across the beginning of th is t rack before a twangy guitar comes in . We are warmed back up by the vocals crashing through. The track p icks up another level when the drums jo in in . The track ro l ls a long effort less ly unt i l with just over a minute from

the end, yet another screaming guitar so lo comes in . Overal l a most enjoyable tune!

Track 8 - Yel low f lowersSlow melodic guitar ing opens th is t rack. Lyr ics jo in in and the track cont inues to f low, bubbl ing a long s l ick ly. Again the guitar ing dur ing th is t rack was amazing , working superbly with the vocals . A much s lower feel to th is t rack, which benef i ts f rom i ts length. Even the now compulsory guitar so lo near the end of the track was p layed at a s lower pace.

Track 9 - Crystal tearsOpening th is t rack was a long c lass ica l sounding intro. The band went for something a b i t d i fferent and a lso added a c lass ica l twist to the vocals as wel l . There was a “within temptat ion” feel to th is song. Once more, i t a l l came together and blended superbly.

Track 10 - I lost my serenitySlow piano to open this t rack, before l ight drumming and guitar

broke the p iano solo. A s low and melodic track with a heavier feel again, l ike “Emotions”. This t rack was very good; even though sped up towards the end, i t fe l t very long for one song. A n ice track to snuggle under a b lanket with someone to watch the sun set .

Overal lArmonight ’s easy l i stening sty le of music has something for a lmost everyone. The unique haunt ing lyr ics of Sy, combine with the fantast ic and smooth play ing of the instruments to create a unique sound, occas ional ly s o u n d i n g reminiscent of “Evanescence” or “Within Temptat ion”. There is a spr ink l ing of gothic music mixed with melodic romant ic tones, and occas ional ly a speck of metal running through. Every track was superb, th is band should go far!

rron Brown Arron Brown found music helped him through a lot . Regular Rockette readers may remember him from the Apri l i ssues. Now he’s re leased another new EP, and The Rockette was lucky enough to get a copy of this one too!

Track 1 – ReasonA long smooth instrumental intro to th is tune. You may recognize th is t rack as i t was on the previous EP as wel l . When Arron began s inging h is voice was not over-powering , but rather soothing! Bas ic guitar ing and l ight drums, combined with soft vocals make th is song re lax ing. A romant ic sounding bal lad which seems to be about wishing th ings would change. This t rack, l ike I have sa id previous ly, could make a good soundtrack for a romant ic type of movie.

Track 2 - Miss YouThis track has a quicker intro. I t ’s very catchy! The gent le drumming and soft guitar draw you in . S l ight ly faster drumming than the previous track. Arron’s voice is smooth throughout th is t rack, with meaningful lyr ics about miss ing someone. “Miss You” should appeal to people of a l l ages.

Track 3 - OutcastThis track has a more guitar based intro than the previous two tracks . The f i rst l ine “ l i fe i s so unfa ir, as I s i t and stare” is a lyr ic which we can a l l re late to. This was my favour i te song from the EP; I found i t to be very catchy, I part icular ly l iked the chime! Track 4 - The SeaThis track has a catchy, more bouncy tune; there is a warm feel ing to the lyr ics . Arron’s voice is soothing just l ike a Worthers or ig inal . Grab a towel , l ie on the beach and reeeeelax, l i sten to th is song and watch the c louds dr i f t by!

Overal lThis EP was fu l l of meaning and I found a l l the tracks very re lax ing. Arron Brown has h is own s low smooth and somewhat romant ic sound. I t i s something anyone of any age should enjoy l i stening to. Even my ancient Nana enjoyed i t !

Interview with Makethisrelate

Tell us about gett ing to “ T in the Park” where you excited? We were! Out of a l l the fest ivals we are playing this year, T in the Park was the one we were most looking forward to. I t ’s a lways a highl ight of the year for Scott ish music so we were grateful to be a part of i t .

Did you pack your wel l ies?We did and we were g lad we remember them! The mud and the rain didn’t stop anyone having a good t ime though. I t ’s Scot land. We’re used to i t .

Did you camp out at g ig or stay in hotel? We were camping but we didn’t spend much t ime in our tents to be honest! There was a lways something happening , even in the middle of the

night, so we didn’t get much s leep.

What other bands did you go to see perform? We managed to catch most of the other Red Bul l Bedroom Jam bands but we also caught sets by Foo F ighters , J immy Eat World and Weezer. We stopped by the T Break stage quite a few t imes and watched our fr iends The LaFontaines, who absolutely k i l led i t on the Saturday afternoon, and we also saw Rachel Sermanni play an amazing set on the Sunday.

Did you meet any other bands whi le you where there?Yeah, we met loads of other bands. We had an awesome wee chat with J immy Eat World backstage and we gave them a couple of CDs to take away with them.

I t was such a surreal moment cause we are huge J immy Eat World fans. We also bumped into a couple of the guys from Twin At lant ic , Al l T ime Low and Br ight Eyes.

How long did you get on stage and what songs did you perform? We had a 25 min set and we played We’ l l Always Be Famous. . . , Today, I ’m on Autopi lot , Stop. Look. L isten. and Pick Your S ide.

How nervous did you get before performing? And how did you control the nerves? We got fa ir ly nervous but we didn’t have much t ime to think about anything. The day went by so quickly that we just had to get on with i t . I t ’s a lways great to be nervous though! You can take that nervous energy

Page 10: theRockette - issue 8

and then turn i t into adrenal ine during the performance. I t a lways makes you perform better.

What made the songs you picked stand out to the others you have?Famous and Stop. Look. L isten. were easy choices s ince we have v ideos out for those songs and we feel they ’re the ones people know the best . We chose Autopi lot and Pick Your S ide cause they have great opportunit ies for the crowd to get involved and s ing a long which we think is very important at a fest ival . I th ink we made the r ight decis ions.

Descr ibe the el iminat ion process of the others?Wel l we had such a short set t ime so we couldn’t real ly f i t any others into the set . We felt the songs we choose were best suited for the T in the Park audience.

How do make the choices of p layl ists , which song to open with to the one you f in ish on?We decided to open with Famous cause we have an intro worked out for the song and we think i t ’s a pretty punchy one to open with. Then we usual ly end on Pick Your S ide cause the melody at the end gets stuck in everyone’s head! We

want people to walk away st i l l humming the melody.

Did the weather stay dry dur ing the performance? It d id a lthough we were hoping for ra in so everyone would f lood into our tent for shelter! But i t stayed pretty sunny outs ide and thankful ly we st i l l got a great crowd in to watch us play.

Do you think playing this fest ival has helped your career progress as a band?Definitely. It has certainly made a few more people aware of our band and that ’s a l l we can ask for

Page 11: theRockette - issue 8

real ly. I t was a lso a great experience for us and we learned a lot f rom it .

I f you could choose a band from T in the park to support you at a g ig , who would i t be, and why?I wouldn’t feel r ight having any of the bands support us, I th ink we’d need to be support ing them!

What track got the best crowd react ion?I ’d probably say Pick Your S ide. Everyone was s inging a long at the end and I think they enjoyed i t !

Was i t strange playing as a 3 piece band? We actual ly played T in the Park as a 4 piece. I t was Dave’s last show with the band and I ’m glad he went out on a high!

Other than your band, who else did you enjoy on RED BULL BEDROOM JAM stage? We loved watching the other Red Bul l Bedroom Jam bands! They ’re a l l br i l l iant this year and we get on real ly wel l with them. I t was great going a long to support them during their sets .

Did you have t ime to go to any of the attract ions/r ides?

We’re not the biggest fans of r ides so we stayed wel l c lear of them!

Did you guys have a beer or two after performing? We did have a couple. . .haha! The guys in Page 44, Hi l l Val ley High and Acoda real ly know how to party. We had a great weekend hanging out with those guys and we can’t wait to see them again at Hevy Fest .

What other more wel l known bands did you enjoy seeing most?J immy Eat World and Foo F ighters were def initely my highl ights. They both played amazing sets and were real ly inspir ing!

What did you miss whi le away from home?Probably our beds. We s lept in the van on the

way to Sonisphere and on the way from Sonisphere to T in the Park, i t wasn’t very comfortable at a l l !

Did you learn anything playing in BIG fest ival?I think we learned to appreciate the opportunity we were g iven. I t real ly was an amazing experience for us and perhaps one we might never get again. So we made sure we enjoyed ourselves and appreciated everything that was happening around us.

Would you play at T in the park again?Without doubt. I f the opportunity ar ises in the future, we wi l l def initely take i t .

Dream AriaChart Topper

How did i t feel to be in the top 200 bands on MySpace? I t was real ly unbel ievable to f ind a unsigned band in

the top 200 bands on MySpace , when you think of i t there are mi l l ions of bands on MySpace

so to f ind our band in the top 200 {181} i t was mind blowing. I know we have a strong fan base because I get over 100 letters a day from fans saying how much they love our music and one day I woke up to over 600 letters { i t took me 8 hours to read and reply}. We are r ight up there with MUSE -Coldplay- Evanecence-Beyonce-Lady Gaga etc.

Was i t a big deal to you?Yes very big I would l ike to think there may be offers coming our way so maybe we can get a record company behind us and we can start to tour

How many weeks have you been there? We have been on the MySpace

charts for just over a year now but i t was most ly for uns igned band, then about 6 months ago we broke into being one of the top progress ive bands we are usual ly

#2 or #3 and MUSE is usual ly #1 but there has been the odd

day we have been #1 but in the last month

we have broken into the top 200 bands

in the world.

Do you think any bands wi l l catch you up?The charts change day to day so yeah we move up and down the chart but we have been very consistent.

Who are you looking to catch up to?I would love to reach the top 100 but not sure we can do that without a label.

Can you explain what i t means to you?I hope i t means a label a tour a l iv ing doing something I love to do but I am not sure the labels are watching let’s hope they are.

Mechanical SmileInterview with

Band Name: Mechanica l Smi leMembers: Dawn Marshal l , Garry I rv ing , Nic P i lmer, Murray BaxterHome Town: Ki lmarnockGenre: Alternat ive/Rock/Pop

Descr ibe the sty le of your band? Our music i s def iant ly unique…. I t ’s l ike pop music , but rocky and grungy, and people can s ing a long to i t .

Who would your music appeal to?Anyone who l ikes heavy pop music and l ikes a s ing-a- long. Our fan base var ies f rom 14 – 40.

Who are your major inf luences? We al l l ike bands l ike Nirvana, Hole, P lacebo, Smashing Pumpkins, S i lversun Pickups, B i ffy C lyro etc

What age did you start your band?Dawn, Garry and Murray are a few years o ld-er than Nic and had been jamming for about a year before we decided to proper ly start a band. We were ear ly – mid 20’s Nic has just turned 20.

Why did you decide to start a band? Was i t a subject you enjoyed at school?Murray: I started play ing drums at school and would watch bands on TV and there was something ins ide me that made me want to be in a band. I enjoyed Music at school but left school at 16. I t wasn’t when I started col -lege at a later age I started tak ing i t more ser ious ly.Nic: Music i s one of the only subjects i ever real ly enjoyed, I ’ve p layed in bands s ince i was about 14.

How did you al l meet?Murray: Dawn Garry and Me met at col lege studying music and then Me and Garry met Nic at Uni last year after a break from study-ing. Nic had been to see us p lay before she jo ined and we knew she could p lay and though she would f i t in , and she has .

Have you changed the band’s name before, I f so what was the idea behind the one you chose? We have a lways had Mechanica l Smi le as a name, i th ink i t came to Dawn in a dream, she takes her dreams very ser ious ly. She enjoys a cat nap or two a day!

Which songs do you perform most frequently? I th ink ‘Leap of ‘Fa i th’ i s a lways 1st song add-ed to the set l i st as i t ’s the one people know the most and is a lways a crowd pleaser. We normal ly f in ish with that! A lso Requiem is the 1st song we wrote when we started out , i t has a powerful r i f f and people seem to love i t .

Do you have any that are big hits with the crowd? Our new song ‘ Take me to the other s ide’ seems to be a real ly b ig h i t with the crowd, we’re to ld i t ’s the best we’ve produced so far!

What ’s your ult imate direct ion for your band, fame and fortune?Nic: We’re s lowly bui ld ing up a name for ourselves, and have a vast ly growing fan base. When i jo ined the band we didn’t have much of an onl ine presence, but s ince Janu-ary th ings seem to have sky rocketed and we keep gett ing great offers for g igs . We’ve just

Page 16: theRockette - issue 8

recorded a new v ideo for our s ingle that wi l l be re leased next month, keep an eye on our facebook page for a re lease date!

When you write music , which member comes up with the lyr ics?Dawn writes the songs and the lyr ics , then we add our own parts to the song and chop and change bits etc , but Dawn is the lyr ica l genius.

How can my readers gain access to your mu-s ic? Is i t f ree?Facebook seems to be where i t ’s a l l at these days. www.facebook.com/mechanicalsmi leYou can l i sten to our EP for f ree on facebook and spot i fy, and you can buy i t f rom iTunes, p lay.com and Amazon. We have a f ree acoust ic t rack up to download on the facebook page, and our new s ingle/v ideo wi l l be out soon!

The Quickie Round:I f you could be a superhero what would your name be? And descr ibe the costume?Murray: I would be Drum Boy – my costume would be made of cymbals and I would batter the baddies with drum st icks .Nic: I p layed a super hero a couple of years ago in a student f i lm cal led Victory and Just ice. I was ca l led Super Nic and i could run super fast . My character had a l i st though so i was ca l led thooper n ic!

I f your band story became a f i lm, what genre of f i lm would i t be?A thr i l ler as we are thr i l l ing to l i sten to :/

Favourite pizza topping? Or food?Murray: P izza, and i ts got to be spicy chicken for me!!!Nic: Nothing beats a huge chunk of Steak!

Favourite song ever? Murray: Erm……… Hel l i s for Heroes – ‘ I can c l imb mountains ’ or Id lewi ld – ‘Actual ly i t ’s darkness ’ (maybe)Nic: That ’s a lways a tough quest ion to answer, my taste changes a lot! I ’d have to say e i ther ‘Watch over you’ by Alter Br idge, or ‘ You could be Mine’ By Guns n’ Roses. My inf luences are a l i tt le d i fferent to the rest of the band!

Funniest on stage moment? When we were in Germany, Murray tr ied to s ing ‘mass of the dead’ in German to start i t off and a) forgot how to say i t in German and b) dawn was p lay ing the wrong chord, so when he sang i t , i t sounded out of tune and was a l l wrong. What are you up to at the moment? Recording more tracks for our forthcoming debut album.

How did you get into the music industry? I always wanted to be in a band and after several attempts f inal ly came together with Bi l l , Scott and Mart in in Stuntman Mike.

Who were your favouri te bands growing up? Red Hot Chi l i Peppers, Nirvana, Faith No More, Metal l ica, Deep Purple, The Who.

Who where your Chi ldhood music idol’s? Ian Paice, Keith Moon, Charl ie Benante.

What song is your earl iest musical memory? Tr icky one! Probably l is tening to my brothers music col lection, he was into punk rock bands The Sex Pistols and The Exploited, not a bad start !

What age did you each decide music was going to be your career? I must have been about 8 and I saw Ian Paice on the tel ly playing with Deep Purple, I was hooked and knew instantly that I wanted to be a drummer! Around about the same I saw a re-run of The Muppet Show featur ing some old guy who was just awesome on the kit , I later found out that the “old guy” was none other than Buddy Rich who is st i l l regarded by many people to this day to be the best drummer in the world! Another s l ight ly surreal inspirat ion was seeing Nicko McBrain on The Sooty Show! I actual ly had a drumkit by this stage and my reaction was to go upstairs to my loft where the kit was and thrash away madly trying to copy what I had just

heard!

Can you describe your early experiences of gigging and working on your f i rst EP? My earl iest experience of gigging was playing in a social club when I was about 17! I was in a rock band but I had never played in publ ic before. The guitar ist ’s dad was also in a band but i t was a working band playing around the clubs in Glasgow. They needed a drummer and asked me to f i l l in for a few gigs. I was terr i f ied at the f i rst gig and i t seemed real ly al ien to me to see rows of women the same age as my gran up there doing the slosh! What a weird start that was haha!

How would you describe your music? Powerful , melodic, lyr ical ly deep, excit ing, loud, foot stomping!

Who would you say are your greatest inf luences and who do you part icular ly admire r ight now in the industry? My greatest inf luence is probably Ian Paice because he is not only a powerful and musical player but also has great technique. The person I admire the most in the industry is Dave Grohl. To emerge from behind the drumkit and become such an excellent s inger/songwriter, guitar ist and frontman is t ruly inspired, especial ly whi lst having to cope with the tragic depression fuel led death of a band member on the way. What he’s done is quite miraculous and extremely inspirat ional.

Touring – love i t or hate i t? Absolutely love touring, there’s nothing l ike playing to a new and appreciat ive crowd in a new city, i t ’s a bit l ike

having sex for the f i rst t ime!!

What are your worst and favouri te parts of being on tour together? Lack of s leep! Lack of food! Lack of money! The best parts are seeing new places and having a laugh with the rest of the guys.

What was the best gig you’ve ever played, and what was the worst? The best gig for me was probably the recent support s lot we did with The Damned Things, being onstage r ight before a chi ldhood hero l ike Scott Ian takes a bit of beating. I don’t real ly have a worst gig, I ’ve enjoyed them al l !

Could you brief ly describe the music-making process? And how you come up with your lyr ics? The process is indescribable! I don’t think any of us have the foggiest clue how we do i t ! I think i f you could wri te i t down in an explanation i t would mean that our music was contr ived and we don’t feel that i t is . I ts real ly just pure energy that comes together to create something. I ts a bit l ike asking to explain the meaning of l i fe! Everyone has an input, each of us know what we l ike and what we don’t l ike and we take no prisoners in tel l ing one another i f we feel that something sucks! There are some clashes on occasion but theres no smoke without f i re as they say! As for lyr ics, i ts part ial ly the same! We have more metaphorical than l i teral lyr ics, they read more l ike poetry in most cases. The hardest part is staying away from cl iches, there are so many songs and lyr ics out there now that i t gets harder to do that, a very di f f icult quest ion to answer!

Page 22: theRockette - issue 8

23

I f you could do a cover of any song, what song would you choose and why? For me i t would be Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana. I think i t ’s probably because I feel that I have very s imilar art ist ic tendencies to Kurt Cobain even though I ’m a drummer and he was a s inger. True art t ranscends al l borders anyway. I think a lot of people just thought he was a cool looking guy with a good voice singing rock songs but I always picked him up in a di f ferent way. I had a bit of a rough t ime emotional ly during my upbringing and I think there was just something about that song that in an art ist ic sense real ly summed up things for me. I must have been touched by that early punk inf luence that my brother gave me. He went through a real ly extreme anarchy phase and st i l l has that streak deep down, I think that real ly rubbed off on me but I tend to express i t through wri t ing lyr ics and songs instead of throwing my hi f i out of the window and steal ing my dads car, which I did also try but the wri t ing real ly just worked out better for me!

What song do you get requests for the most? 10000 Lives, def ini tely, even though we’re not 100% happy with the studio recording we have of i t , i t s t i l l seems to be the most demanded song at gigs! We’re re-recording i t for the album though!

What would be your ideal date? Hawaii , above a waterfal l looking on to the ocean, or anything that involved receiving a new drumkit at the end of i t !

What song reminds you of the f i rst t ime you fel l in love? You know, I would love to say that I have one but I think I ’ve become a bit numb to the idea of attaching music and love together! Probably as a result of t rying to stay away from cl ichés when wri t ing. I t ’s a funny thing, I know a lot of musicians who just aren’t sentimental that way! I guess I ’m just one of them too! I do remember the song from a Kinder Surprise advert that was on the tel ly in the room the f i rst t ime I met Scott , but I don’t think I fel l in love with him! I just wanted one of those wee chocolate eggs with the toy inside i t !

Do you have posters up on your room walls? Absolutely none! I ’m a minimalist when i t comes to such things!

What is the weirdest gi f t you have received from a fan? An inf latable crocodile! Don’t ask!

What’s been the highl ight for you so far, and do you have any regrets? The highl ight has to be support ing The Damned Things, my only regret was that I didn’t have the guts to speak to Scott Ian!

What can we expect in the future f rom you? I ’m going to get a 42 piece drumkit with seven bass drums, huge gong and some f lame throwers around i t , nah i t might not f i t in the car! I ’m looking forward to gett ing the album done, that should be gett ing near complete by the end of next month hopeful ly.

What would be the best piece of advice you have been given that you would l ike to share with our readers?

When driving at night, make sure your headlamps are on. I t could be messy otherwise.

What art ist would you love to col laborate with? Rod Stewart, no probably The Foo Fighters just so I could do a drum batt le with Grohl and Hawkins (who I lovingly cal l farmboy, cos he looks l ike he could be working on a farm haha!) both great players.

The best gig you have been to? Metal l ica, Death Magnetic tour at the SECC (not because of the SECC though!) Awesome stage show!

What do you do to relax when you’re not working? I actual ly partake in some meditat ion bel ieve i t or not, I used to thick i t was a bit cooky but i t ’s actual ly awesome, plus people think you’re secret ly a Shaolin ninja or something l ike that which is quite cool.

I f you hadn’t become a band/singer etc., what job do you think you’d be doing r ight now? Architect, I was always on course to become an architect but music nabbed me!

Who is your celeb crushes? Rod Stewart…. no Ariel f rom The Li t t le Mermaid because she looks l ike Pol ly, my lady! (no she doesn’t have a f ishes tai l)

I f a genie gave you 3 wishes, what would you wish for? a 42 piece drumkit with seven bass drums and…no haha! 3 wishes? 1. A good cuban cigar, 2. A pair of s l ippers, 3. Peace.

What are you up to at the moment? In the process of recording our debut album, gigging as many places as possible, bui lding up the stuntanians!

How did you get into the music industry? I t comes down to doing what you love most and most importantly other people enjoying what you do, that’s what music’s al l about and why we are in this industry.

Who were your favouri te bands growing up? I would say again 90’s indie’s band were about when we f i rst started in bands so inf luence came from these bands.

Who where your Chi ldhood music idol’s? I would have to say Freddie Mercury would be up there along with Tom Yorke, Matt Bel lamy.

What song is your earl iest musical memory? I think i t would be Bad Medicine by Bon Jovi! I was about 5 at the t ime.

What age did you each decide music was going to be your career? I t would have been the early years of high school when I real ly started singing at school shows and started up bands. Music was the way forward.

Can you describe your early experiences of gigging and working on your f i rst EP? Recording a f i rst EP is always going to be excit ing, wondering how i t wi l l turn out, hoping people l ike i t . Gigging for the f i rst t ime was nerve-racking but once you’re in the zone, there’s no going back!

How would you describe your music?

First and foremost the energy from our songs, they grab you through sheer power. Dynamics and melodies are also a big part of what we do, these 3 areas add the spice to what we are about!

Who would you say are your greatest inf luences and who do you part icular ly admire r ight now in the industry? Greatest inf luences for me would have to be the Foo’s, REM, Queen, I ron Maiden. ( I may start f ly ing lessons for the Stuntman Jet world tour)

Touring – love i t or hate i t? New places, new people loving your work, love i t !

What are your worst and favouri te parts of being on tour together? Worst part is people who have a problem sharing a bed with me? No seriously worst part is t rying to lay off the beers! Best part is again new places, new people and new experiences.

What was the best gig you’ve ever played, and what was the worst? Best gig in agreeance with Marty would have to be BartonFest down south. This was the bands f i rst outdoor gig, what a great atmosphere, great people. Worst gig would be one held in our hometown, not the best of nights should I say.

Could you brief ly describe the music-making process? And how you come up with your lyr ics? Stunt i f ication creeps into every Stuntman song, f rom the drum part to the guitar l ines r ight down to the vocal melodies. Lyr ics in the majori ty come from the deep mind of Roy and al l have an underlying

meaning and theme.

I f you could do a cover of any song, what song would you choose and why?it would have to be to pul l of f a ful l l ive, ful l length version of Bohemian Rhapsody. Musical ly and vocally a unique song and would be a lot of fun.

What song do you get requests for the most? There are a few, Black Day, Great Exploitat ions and 10,000 L ives.

What would be your ideal date? Rhianna, lots of alcohol and a hot tub.

What song reminds you of the f i rst t ime you fel l in love? To be honest there isn’t actual ly one I can remember.

What is the weirdest gi f t you have received from a fan? Nothing yet, looking forward to i t though!

What’s been the highl ight for you so far, and do you have any regrets? Highl ight so far is just gett ing people out with our own group of f r iends to be fans of the band and fol low what we are doing. Not having a big enough budget and resources to get the band out to a much wider group would be the only regret, but hopeful ly this wi l l come through t ime.

What can we expect in the future f rom you? First ly the debut album is hopeful ly not too far f rom completion, more and hopeful ly bigger gigs and a few more singles.

Page 30: theRockette - issue 8

What would be the best piece of advice you have been given that you would l ike to share with our readers? Li fe’s too short to only dream and not achieve what you dream, so just get out there and do i t !

The best gig you have been to? AC/DC at Hampden Park, amazing show!

I f you hadn’t become a band/singer etc., what job do you think you’d be doing r ight now? Roadsweeper and Tr igger f rom Only Fools and Horses would be my mate!

What are you up to at the moment? Completing the recording of our debut album. The ideas are f lowing so i t may prove dif f icult to cut everything down to a f inal 11-12 songs. We’re also gett ing ready for a run of gigs throughout August / September where we’l l hopeful ly be playing some of these new songs for the f i rst t ime.

How did you get into the music industry?Hard to say, been playing music for so long! Can’t remember not being in a band.

Who were your favouri te bands growing up? Like many a young guitar ist I ’m going to put my hands up and admit I was an Oasis f reak. I even had the mop-top hair and parka jacket! ! Thankful ly my music tastes have diversi f ied since then. In my mid-teens Marty introduced me to the sexy world of heavy rock and metal!

Who where your Chi ldhood music idol’s? Noel Gallagher & Daniel Johns.

What song is your earl iest musical memory? ‘Heart of Glass’ by Blondie. Think my dad had a thing for Debbie Harry.

What age did you each decide music was going to be your career? I was 13 when some of the older guys in school were playing in rock bands as part of the school talent shows. The gir ls used to go mad for them!! That sealed i t for me. I think 90% of musicians pick up an instrument in order to impress the opposite sex.

Can you describe your early experiences of gigging and working

on your f i rst EP? I t was exhi larat ing but also nerve-wracking at the same t ime. We soon learned that you cannot underest imate the value of practicing and practicing and practicing. We didn’t gig regularly in the early days, we real ised that we had to get good at what we did f i rst . Too many new bands seem to be playing gigs before they’re ready to hit a stage! Even in the early days where we would play the t iniest of venues (general ly pubs where some tables and chairs had been moved to accommodate some shit ty sound system), we would give i t our al l and make sure that everyone standing at the bar turned round and were si lenced for those 30 action-packed minutes!

How would you describe your music? Our songs are energetic, groove-based, dynamic pearls of cerebral rock wisdom!

Who would you say are your greatest inf luences and who do you part icular ly admire r ight now in the industry? I think a lot of rock music just now is becoming a bit stale and repeti t ive. I ’m inf luenced and excited by bands who take tradit ional instruments and create real ly individual ist ic and challenging sounds, such as Queens of the Stone Age and NIN. From a song-wri t ing point of view I also love the classic pop structures of The Pol ice.

Touring – love i t or hate i t? Love i t , love i t , love i t !

What are your worst and favouri te parts of being on tour together? Worst part is probably the general ly cramped

travel l ing condit ions. The best part is having a laugh experiencing new cit ies and towns with my best mates.

What was the best gig you’ve ever played, and what was the worst? One of my favouri te gigs was the f i rst t ime we played Inverness. The venue was absolutely packed with about 250 people, and the crowd were well up for having a good t ime and showing how much they appreciated what we were doing. We feed off that sort of atmosphere and i t just made for an amazing show! There’s been a few st inkers, including one show where we ended up playing to 6 of our best mates and that was i t ! Our stage t ime kept gett ing pushed back and back to the point where most people had decided to go home.

Could you brief ly describe the music-making process? And how you come up with your lyr ics? There’s no real process, everything is very organic. Some of our songs are wri t ten in 15 min, others can take a number of weeks to get r ight. As me and Marty share a f lat we wil l often jam out some r i f f ideas and chord structures late at night which we wil l then take to the studio and work on with the rest of the guys. This general ly gives Roy a canvas of sorts to paint his lyr ical genius over the top. Other t imes Roy wil l come in to the studio with a completed song on the acoust ic guitar which we then ‘Stunt i fy’ ! !

I f you could do a cover of any song, what song would you choose and why? I ’ve always thought beefing up ‘Do Ya Think I ’m Sexy’ by Rod Stewart

Page 34: theRockette - issue 8

with some distorted bass would be a hedonist ic experience.

What song do you get requests for the most? I t ’s great that i t seems that our fans al l have dif ferent songs that are their favouri tes. The most requested though has to be our f i rst s ingle and set closer ’10,000 L ives’ .

What would be your ideal date? Marty, Angelina Jol ie, Hand Cuffs, and a bott le of Chartreuse.

What song reminds you of the f i rst t ime you fel l in love? Don’t know about fal l ing in love, but Damien Rice’s ‘O’ was my f i rst break-up album.

Do you have posters up on your room walls? No, I ’m very minimalist .

What is the weirdest gi f t you have received from a fan? We’re supposed to get gi f ts???

What’s been the highl ight for you so far, and do you have any regrets? Highl ight so far was our f i rst t r ip to London with a bus load of our fans! I don’t have any regrets, i t ’s a waste of energy.

What can we expect in the future f rom you? Bigger shows! Bigger songs!

What would be the best piece of advice you have been given that you would l ike to share with our readers? Never judge your own success against that of someone else. Enjoy your own journey!

What art ist would you love to col laborate with? Dave Grohl, wouldn’t everyone?

The best gig you have been to? Motorhead @ Stubbs BBQ Hut in Aust in TX, or Rage Against The Machine @ TITP.

What do you do to relax when you’re not working? I love food and f ind cookery shows extremely relaxing! I also enjoy reigning over Marty as the bands FIFA champion.

I f you hadn’t become a band/singer etc., what job do you think you’d be doing r ight now? An actor!

Who is your celeb crushes? Jennifer Aniston (she’l l s t i l l be foxy at 60), Mi la Kunis, and Katy Perry ( f i l thy!)

I f a genie gave you 3 wishes, what would you wish for? A tour support with Queens of the Stone Age, the eradication of al l Neds and Chavs, and free beer for al l ! !

Would you l ike to star in a movie, i f so what kind of movie? Defini tely! I ’d love to t ry out comedy acting.

Do you have any pets? I f yes what is their name? Unfortunately no…..I used to have 2 dogs cal led Chelsea and Misty.

What super power do you wish you had? And why? I would love the power of turning water into wine! Did some bearded chap not once do that? Roy?

Describe your bedroom? Scented candles and lava lamps! Boom-chicka-bow-wow!!

What inspires you most when wri t ing lyr ics? Witnessing al l the good and bad happening around me.

Interview the Editor

How long have you been in journal ism and what got you into i t?To be honest I ’ve never been into journal ism. At least unt i l I began working as design editor for a fashion magazine in August 2010. After a few months I decided to leave the fashion magazine, as I was gett ing very l i t t le f reedom with the design work. But I decided I enjoyed designing the magazine, so I put my two fav hobbies together (design and music). I f ind wri t ing stor ies, interviews and reviews rather enjoyable, even more when i ts bands I l ike and know. In the past I have studied design at col lege (2005-2009), s ince graduating I ’ve been doing small design jobs, but I only began journal ism in December 2010 for the launch of “The Rockette”.

What chal lenges did you face in sett ing up The Rockette and how did you overcome them?It is always chal lenging. I think the biggest chal lenge is every month, t rying to f ind new and excit ing acts. Once you have interview a few bands word spreads and bands are now contacting me. You always f ind new challenges when running a new magazine. I ’m sure I wi l l come across a few more in the future.

How long on average does i t take to put an issue of The Rockette together? It real ly depends on the issue content. On average i t takes about 3 weeks. I f there are a lot of reviews i t can take the whole month.

Page 37: theRockette - issue 8

Do you have any plans for expansion l ike maybe a printed version in the future? I would love to!! ! That may take a whi le, I ’m looking for a publ isher. A pr inted version would be amazing; i t would be excit ing to see people buying my magazine in shops.

The music scene has changed dramatical ly in the last 10 years or so with so much music now avai lable onl ine, do you foresee any changes to music journal ism in the future?I think there may be changes, but change can sometimes be good. I think magazines l ike Ourzone are good as they are web based already. I think more magazines should make an onl ine version of the magazines they produce.

We met you through a gig at The Garage in Glasgow where we supported The Damned Things, did you f ind i t easy to get access to the bands and what di f f icult ies have you experienced ( i f any) in arranging interviews with touring acts? Yes i t can be dif f icult , a lot of bands ask me to meet them and review their gigs. However a lot of venues I can’t get access to, so this can be a problem. Touring acts are also very busy, f inding t ime for interviews is again a problem.

Who has been your favouri te band to interview so far (apart f rom us of course haha!)? Oh very hard to answer that I think each band is di f ferent, probably due to the answers they give. I couldn’t pick just one I enjoyed al l the cover interviews; however I think I enjoy the gig reviews more.

Do you have any other interests besides music journal ism?I enjoy doing design work, I have designed numerous CD covers, posters, f l iers and logo’s over past few years. I enjoy photography and I have even made several short animations. One of my animations was in the Edinburgh f i lm fest ival in 2008. Another was said to be “too rude” for f i lm fest ival, however my lecturers loved i t . I also enjoy going out with f r iends to shops, pub, gigs, cinema, bowling ect.

How many gigs do you go to in an average year? Depends! Some years can be jam packed with gigs to go to. Other t imes I ’ l l be lucky to f ind any. At the very least I t ry to f ind one a month. But s ince the magazine launch I ’ve been to loads!

What are your favouri te venues and why?As a lot of you may not know I ’m in a wheelchair , this can be a bit annoying as a lot of venues don’t have access. The “ABC” in Glasgow is a very good venue, but I had to go in the back door at “the Garage” in Glasgow. In Edinburgh gett ing into “sneaky pete’s” is quite di f f icult , but great once past the door and “studio 24” is a good venue. I tend not to go to places l ike the “SECC” anymore as the disabled seating is way up the back; i t could be anyone on the stage. At least in ABC, the Garage or even sneaky pete’s you can get up close and personal with the bands.

Do you think the internet is capable of moving the music industry base away from being centred in London as far as the UK is concerned? I def iant ly think that could be possible.

What do you feel damages the l ive music scene and what do you feel helps i t?I think what helps i t is band/fan relat ionships, when fans get to meet bands and bands show their appreciat ion to fans. Also l ive you’re hearing the band without sound edits ect. The damages are when things go wrong due to technical di f f icult ies. Also when the CD makes the band seem better, than they real ly are l ive.

Many people now feel that because of technology, many bands sound great on CD but can’t cut i t as a l ive band, what are your f indings ( i f any) in this area and have you seen any bands that weren’t ready to play l ive? I have found this with a few bands (I won’t name drop). Technology can even make signed bands sound better than they are l ive. I think sometimes this may be down to management, pushing bands to play l ive before they’re ready. I think some bands may need guidance

Page 38: theRockette - issue 8

before they play a l ive gig.

On a less ser ious s ide, do you have any pets?Ha-ha yes. I have a dog cal led Kaiser named after The Kaiser Chiefs. He’s a white (when not rol l ing in dir t) and f luf fy “bichon fr ise” who real ly thinks he’s human!

What is your favouri te colour/food/drink?Colour is dark purple, always has been never been a pink gir l ! Favouri te food that’s hard love pasta or pizza so I tal ian. Dr ink, you didn’t state i f this was alcohol or juice? So i l l answer both, juice is I rn Bru or Coke, alcohol is a nice cold beer or T ia Maria i f we’re talking spir i ts !

Do you have any posters on your walls and i f so what is the largest one of?I only have 1 on my wall , i t ’s of Jacob from Twil ight (yummy).

I f there was one thing that you could change about the world what would i t be?Ignorance! Wow that was easy.. . .

Back to ser iousvi l le! We think The Rockette is an excellent publ ication and we are real ly impressed with the quali ty of the content, did you study journal ism or is i t something you have picked up natural ly?Here’s a shocking fact for you al l , I didn’t study Engl ish at al l ! I think I f ind journal ism easy when I ’m wri t ing about

Kaiser

things I enjoy. So I guess I ’ve just picked i t up.

Do you have a favouri te journal ist or wri ter?I love reading books when I have t ime, Anne Rice is my favouri te author she wrote “interview with the vampire”. I also love Stephanie Mayer “twi l ight” & Port ia Da Costa “lust Bi tes”. I used to read Kerrang, t i l l Eminem was in i t and

other rap people! Now I just download to my Kindle.

This is our f i rst ever go at interviewing anyone, how many marks out of 10 would you give us?Oh I would give you a 10! (haha)

Do you think people take for granted how dif f icult i t is to put a magazine l ike The Rockette together?Sometimes, I think people take i t for granted. But doesn’t stop me, I enjoy doing i t .

Do you think we have a future in journal ism haha! Be serious now!!? The interview was good but i f you gave up music I would miss your art icles and interviews!

EP Review

The band released their new EP “Secret Forces” in June 2011 . After seeing the band l ive when they supported “The Damned Things” in 2011 , I have kept in touch with them. They were nice enough to send me a free copy of their EP so I can review it.

Track 1 – Secret ForcesA very techno intro to this song, with a shorter intro than usual. Scott’s voice soon kicks in, giv ing the track a very dif ferent feel ing. The track has a very catchy tune; this wi l l have you dancing along in no t ime at al l . This t rack should appeal to al l genres. The music was more of an alternative sty le. With dist inct ive drumming and fantast ic guitar ing support ing the very powerful lyr ics. I recon this song wi l l be heard in nightclubs in no t ime at al l .

Track 2 – ChemicalThis was completely dif ferent to the f i rst t rack. A more guitar and drum based intro. I t also had a longer intro than the f i rst t rack. Scott’s lyr ics begins are s lower than before. The song has a “darker” feel to i t , more of a grunge sound to this t rack at t imes when the guitars just rock out. I th ink this was my favour i te t rack on the EP. Towards the end of the track i t got very hectic, with

music again becoming very loud and dramatic.

Track 3 – Ashes of OathsThis i s the f inal t rack, again very dif ferent to the other t racks on the EP. With a fast paced intro fol lowed by somewhat of a s lower melody, which speeds up a l i t t le for the chorus. This sounded famil iar , l ike a song I’ve heard before, sort of s imi lar to a “Simple minds”. A cool mix of dynamic lyr ics and vibrant instrument playing.

Overal lThis EP was very enjoyable. “Stuntman Mike” appears to have f i l led a niche in the market that nobody knew was there!! They have their own dist inct ive sound and cannot real ly be compared to anyone else (apart f rom the reference to S imple Minds above). People of any age, into any genre, please grab a copy. You won’t be disappointed.

Dreadnought Rock

Club in Bathgate

30/07/2011

The f inal of the 96.3 Rock Radio “Batt le of The Bands” competi t ion was held at the Dreadnought Rock Club in Bathgate. The f inal ists were - Jaego, Stuntman Mike, The Media Whores, Minj, Rosewood, Vantage Point, Lethal Tender and Hot Rai ls . The competi t ion was hosted by Tom Russel l who presents

the Fr iday Night Rock Show.

The “batt le” began at 4pm, but I knew I couldn’t get there t i l l later, so I missed a few of the bands. I arr ived at around 7pm, and as I was support ing “Stuntman Mike”, and I knew they wouldn’t be on t i l l later, I had just enough t ime to get my wristband and

a drink, and meet up with my nana, just in t ime to catch the last couple of t racks by “Lethal Tender”. They were a heavy rock band and rather good. Next up was “Hot Rai ls” who were a soft rock band. They sang a few catchy songs.

Page 41: theRockette - issue 8

“Stuntman Mike” were due up next and I just had enough t ime for a quick chat and to show them a rough printout of the cover of this month’s issue and their EP review. The band said they l iked i t . Some of the band members said Scott gets mentioned too much and Marty said “his heads big enough”(haha). Bi l ly loved the fact there was a comparison to “Simple Minds”, and said i t was well wri t ten! They said they rarely play “Chemical” now-

a-days which was my favouri te on the EP, so they said they wi l l have to start playing i t more often, because a number of people have said they l iked i t .

“Stuntman Mike” opened their set with “Great Exploitat ions”. L ive i t was loud and banging. Scott ’s voice was cool, rather high pitched and carr ied well through the venue. The next t rack was “Black Day” i t had a very quick paced intro. They

then had some sound dif f icult ies before their third t rack. I think I overheard them say one of the guitars had blown the amp!! ! Their 3rd song “Champagne Wolves” was a s lower paced affair with a more repeti t ive beat. The twist must be back, because Bi l ly could be seen bust ing his moves on the guitar!

To comply with the competi t ion rules the band had to perform 2 cover songs. “Stuntman Mike” decided to play “Black Night” and “Long Tal l Sal ly” both were very well received. Their f inal song of the night was “10,000 L ives”. This was another s low track, with heavy sounding guitars, lots of head-banging and Scott s inging some real ly long, s low and powerful lyr ical notes.

The f inal band where a real heavy metal band cal led “Vantage point”, their guitar ist was very energetic, bouncing al l over the stage in his skin t ight wet look trousers and their s inger was hit t ing some seriously high notes!

Fol lowing on from that there was a short interval whi le the judging panel ret i red to a separate room to make their decision. After about 15 minutes, al l the bands were cal led back to the stage area for the result .

Hot Rai ls

Page 42: theRockette - issue 8

42

Tom Russel l asked the crowd to show their appreciat ion for al l the bands who had played, then read out the results in reverse order. Third was “Jaego”. Then unbelievably there was joint winners, “Hot Rai ls” and “Stuntman Mike”. They had identical results f rom al l the judges. Tom had a cast ing vote, but thought i t best to keep i t a t ie! ! !

Then the f inal ist ’s where cal led onto the stage to have photos taken. “Stuntman Mike” picked up Tom Russel l for one of their photos. After al l the excitement there was a special guest appearance from “Kontraband”.

And the prize for winning I hear you ask. Well both

winning bands wi l l have their songs played across

the UK on the Fr iday Night Rock Show on 96.3 and

both wi l l play l ive at the BMW Motorrad Extreme

Weekend on Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th August at

Knockhi l l Racing Circuit in F i fe. Entrance is f ree and

there wi l l be lots of other excit ing entertainment,

including demonstrat ions and stunt dr iving! I ’m

already making plans to go.

What are your worst/favorite parts of being on tour?Favor i te part i s going to lots of d i fferent p laces with our f r iends and gett ing to p lay shows everynight! Worst th ing is bad sound guys!!

The Most powerful lyr ics are? Recent ly we loved the lyr ics in Death Cab’s new s ingle. “ i f you feel just l ike a tour ist in the c i ty you were born” and “when you f ind yoursel f the v i l la in in the story you have written”

What is the weirdest g i f t you have received from a fan?The best g i f t we’ve got f rom a fan is just them turning up to watch us . Which is just great! And beer a lso, a lways good when someone buys you a beer!

Which art ist would you l ike to col laborate with? Jack Steadman from Bombay Bicyc le C lub

How do you relax when you’re not working? We enjoy a range of v ideo games, p laystat ion, xbox, gamecube, beer gardens, watching adventure t ime with f inn and jake!

What plans do you have for the near future? Our p lans are to record some more music , p lay lots of g igs and to get a larger fan base!

Do you have any pre-gig r i tuals/Lucky i tems? I don’t th ink any of us have any interest ing r i tuals or lucky i tems. Dr ink lots of water before the show!

Which instrument do you wish you could play? A l l of us can pretty much play a l l instruments real ly! But i ’d love to be able to have a go on the d idger idoo!

I s there anything you wish you could add to your band? We are a lways looking for stuff to add to the band to improve our sound. At the moment i t would probably be some electronicky type sounds, that would be fun!

What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major inf luences? We consider our genre to be pop. We are a pop band and we love that . We are inf luenced by Death Cab For Cut ie , J immy Eat World and Michael Jackson to name but a few.

How long have you al l known each other? How did you meet? Wel l , my brother and i have known each other for quite a whi le! Obvious ly! The rest of the band met at var ious t imes, School , Col lege or through fr iends.

How does i t make you feel , when you hear fans s ing your lyr ics back to you?I ts a great feel ing to even hear someone humming one of our songs after we’ve p layed. So to hear fans s inging the lyr ics i s just mind blowing and makes wr it ing i t a l l the more sat isfy ing.

Who writes your songs? The lead s inger, Ed, wr i tes most of the songs with h is brother

George contr ibut ing as wel l .

What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics wi l l change over t ime? The main topics are g i r ls , love and ummm, rock and rol l? Not quite, just about exper iences we’ve had real ly. And yes, i ’m sure the topics wi l l change over t ime, as we mature and exper ience d i fferent th ings in l i fe .

Do you have any shows coming up? We just p layed at the Camden Barf ly and that went great . We have a few shows coming up in Br isto l in September, as wel l as a show in our hometown of Exeter at the Cavern Club!
