School isn’t going very well for 11-year-oldBradley. He doesn’t do his homework, andhe’s failing fifth grade. He hates his teacherand classmates, and they don’t like himeither. Bradley sits in the last seat, in the lastrow, and he has never earned a single goldstar. Matters become worse when a newstudent named Jeff arrives and tries tobecome Bradley’s friend.

At first, Bradley threatens to spit on Jeff,so Jeff leaves Bradley alone. Then the boysdevelop a strange friendship. The situationbecomes more difficult when Bradley triesto recruit Jeff to pick fights with girls. ButBradley ends up with a black eye (from agirl), and Jeff gets the blame. Jeff winsinstant acceptance from the other boys, while Bradley gets picked on even more.

The new school counselor, Carla Davis, meets with Bradley. She is kind and caring, and she even seems to enjoy their visits.Eventually, Carla breaks through to Bradleyand he starts trying to be a better person.

The transformation doesn’t happenovernight, however. It seems the harderBradley tries to be good, the more trouble hegets into. When he tries to be polite atbreakfast, he ends up spilling his orangejuice. When he tries to be nice to hisclassmates, they’re mean to him. When hetries to hand in some math homework, panicsets in and he rips it up instead.

Carla and Bradley continue their visitsduring this difficult time. She encourageshim to keep trying. She also proves that she

trusts him by loaning him one of her favoritebooks. Bradley thinks the book is funny andbegins to write his first book report.

Bradley’s situation finally starts to turnaround. He becomes accepted by the boys inhis class, including Jeff. They even ask himto play basketball at recess. His father giveshim some basketball lessons at home. Histeachers seem to trust him more, and heeven gets invited to a classmate’s birthdayparty.

Unfortunately, not everyone sees theprogress that Carla makes with her students. Some concerned parents meet with theprincipal to discuss the necessity of acounselor. They feel that her salary could bebetter spent on classroom computers. Aftera heated meeting, the principal gives in andagrees to transfer Carla to a different school.

Bradley proudly shares his finished bookreport with Carla. She praises his effort andgives the book to Bradley as a present. Shethen explains that she’s been transferred andasks for Bradley’s help moving. Bradley, crushed by the news, rips up his book reportand throws the book at Carla.

Carla tapes Bradley’s book report backtogether and hands it in to his teacher. Shepacks up her office and leaves the book anda note for Bradley, who arrives too late tohelp.

Though he’s nervous, Bradley attends thebirthday party and has a wonderful time. Heeven forgives Carla for leaving and sends hera present at her new school.
