The Green Office1. Situation

Due to a screen workplace analysis a employee survey

resulted with one major critic : the climate.

• Low air humidity

• Draft created by A/C‘s

• Bad air quality

• Unpleasant room temparature due to the time of year

• Electrostatically charged air

The Green Office2. Tasks and goals

• Improving the climat situation indoors

• Finding alternatives to A/C and humidifyer

• Gathering mesurable experience

• Defining a implementable solution for the BMW standard

• Office area 308 m2

• 21 Employees

• 12% of area is plants , form those about. 50% on furniture

• Additional required space for plant per employee 0,8 m2

• About 69 plant vessels where used, floor vessels where

filled with earth, table vessel with hdyro and those on

furniture where filled with Seramis granules

• Further lighting was required for darker areas

• Maintanance was handled on a weekly basis by a gardener

5.2.3.1 Effect of humidity on the human body

Schematic display of a normal (left) and a dryed out

mucous membrane (right) respiratory tract

➢Inactive ciliated moves

contaminated secretion to

respiratory tract

➢As the mucus membran is dryed

out (see pic.) it does work no longer

➢Dust, germs get not longer

transpored away

➢This causes sickness to humans!

Sick Building Syndrome is a sickness where several

characteristic syntoms appear as long as you stay in a building

and disapear after you leave .

• Central nervous system (headache, lack of

concentration, exhaustion)

• Mucous membrane, respiratory tract and eyes

(Konjunktivitis, Bronchitis, Rhinitis)

• Skin (red skin, itching, burning, dry skin)

1.Project: Greening of a bank office to climatise rooms, accompanied researches

found a reduction in sick leaves

for 2,5 Days/YearA decrease in infection related illnesses, skin irritaions and Conjunctivitis has been

documented.

2.Projekt: Greening of an advertising agency in Ansbach, accompanied

researches documented a reduction in sick leaves

for 5-6 Days/YearFringe benefit: Employees stayed longer in office to work.

• Reduction of sick leaves:- Respirtory sicknesses- Allergies

- Sick-Building symptoms : Eye infections, sniff, headaches, exhaustion, lack of concentrationetc.

• Efficiency and motivation boosts

• Searching for better alternatives in order to improve climatein offices

• Applicable alternative for standardisation

The Green Office12. Conclusion

Due to the high space requirement the project is not 1:1

applicable. The Positive aspects of this project has to be

optimised in order to become a standard, by :

• Reducing maintenance costs

• Reducing space reqirements (introducing plants with

higher efficiency)

• Defining required amount of leafes in order to maintain an

optimum result.
