  • CREATING ‘A CULTURE OF EXCELLENCE’ IN 2016

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I write my first newsletter item for 2016. A particularly warm welcome to staff, students and families who are new to our College. It is my hope that you have settled in well to our community, and that your faith and learning journey at Gleeson College is filled with many special moments. I have been very impressed by the way that the student body have approached the first few days this year. There has been a very settled approach, and the staff have commented on and certainly appreciated this attitude. It is certainly our hope and aim that this positive beginning is carried forward throughout the year.

Most definitely education works best when there is a respectful and genuine three-way partnership between staff, parents and students. I therefore encourage all parents to begin, continue, and cultivate positive and constructive conversations with your children’s teachers. It is working in the spirit of mutual support and understanding that the best and most rewarding outcomes are achieved. These conversations begin in the first few weeks of school, are

formalised at our Parent Information Evening on Monday 15 February, and then I urge you to continue them throughout the year.

I would like to welcome the new staff to Gleeson College. Ms Rachel Staffin has joined the College as Sports Development Coordinator, and Mrs Sarah Benedictson as our Inclusive Education Assistant. We have also welcomed former Adelaide United FC Captain Travis Dodd to oversee our Specialist World Football Program in 2016. Each of you are very welcome to our special community here at Gleeson College and I am sure that you will find your time with us both rewarding and positive.

In addition to our new staff there are a number of current staff members who have taken on formal leadership roles within the College and a full list of these people can be found in this newsletter for your reference.

During the holiday break the College was a hive of activity with a number of projects completed to ensure that we both maintain and add to our already outstanding facilities. The courtyard has undergone a significant transformation with the addition of shade, seating areas, and a reinvigorated stage area. In addition, a number of student toilets have been completely renovated and several

learning spaces have been refreshed also. All of these projects are designed to ensure that our staff and students have the very best environment in which to learn. I am sure that many of you will have the opportunity to see these changes on the Parent Information Evening.

We have many exciting initiatives this year that are aimed at continuously improving our learning and faith community. On the front cover of the student diary you can see that in 2016 we are committed to creating ‘A Culture of Excellence’. We want all of the students who attend Gleeson College to create and catch their own personal excellence whatever form that may take. This year we want to focus on what excellence looks like for all. What does it mean to achieve excellence as a student, a staff member - indeed what does excellence as a supportive parent look like? This work is being led inspirationally by our Deputy Principal, Mr Joe Corbo, and it is both challenging and incredibly exciting. Mr Corbo uses the phrase “if it is not excellent, it is not finished” - and that’s exactly how we at Gleeson College view our vocation.

I very much look forward to the year ahead and the limitless possibilities that it offers.

HOAX PHONE CALLS TO SCHOOLSAs you may be aware a number of schools across Australia

have received hoax threatening phone calls recently.

Gleeson College has not received such a call but I wanted to inform you that, like all schools, we have an emergency management plan in place for situa-tions like this, and we practise it throughout the year. You would have seen

on the media that those schools that have received a threatening call enacted their emergency management plans and they have worked well. In the un-

likely event of such a situation we will keep parents informed.

Rest assured that the safety and wellbeing of our studentsis always our top priority.

Gleeson College offers students the opportunity to work in a quiet, supervised environment to complete homework and gain assistance from staff via our Homework Club.

The benefit for students attending the Homework Club is the opportunity to obtain support and guidance to complete their homework and/or assignment work. To ensure that students receive personal attention and support from supervisors, Homework Club will be limited to 25 positions each afternoon session. Homework Club is an extension activity offered to students to help them to achieve personal excellence; therefore the same expectations apply regarding behaviour, as stated in the College diary.

Homework Club will start in Week 2 of Term 1 and continue through to Week 7 of Term 4 in 2016. Homework Club operates Monday to Thursday and is based in the Multi-Media Room, from 3.30pm-4.30pm. Afternoons that students attend can be changed each term by negotiation with the Coordinator.

If you are interested in attending Homework Club in 2016, please collect a registration form from the Flexible Learning Centre or College Front Office. If you have any questions please feel free to email the Homework Club Coordinator, Ms Joanna Grotto, via email at: [email protected]

One of the many pastoral considerations that we have to address as a College is the issue of personal presentation of students. In aspiring to excellence in the wearing of the uniform which unites our community, we believe it is important that all students acquire a sense of pride in their attire and grooming.

As we commence this academic year and the students return, there have been a number of concerns with the wearing of the College uniform.

Please check and discuss these matters to ensure your son/daughter’s uniform is in line with the College uniform expectations as outlined on pages 17 and 18 of the College diary.

The areas of concern which have been noted in the first few days include:• Inappropriate length of Girls Summer Dress - it should be worn to below the

knees.• Shortened or hemmed PE uniform shorts.• Excessive or inappropriate jewellery - nose rings, number of earrings, bracelets

and rings.• Facial hair - boys are required to be clean shaven.

At Gleeson College, we strongly emphasise the appropriate wearing of all aspects of the uniform and that this responsibility will always belong to the student. However, we regard your support and encouragement as invaluable in helping your child follow the expectations of our Uniform Policy at Gleeson College.

  • GLEESON COLLEGE CAR PARK COURTESY

We kindly request families please read the following timely reminder regarding the safe flow of traffic in and around the Gleeson College car park. While there is a feeling of congestion when things go wrong, we have found that if all drivers follow the directions set out below, then traffic flows smoothly and the car park empties reasonably quickly.

Entry: Is always from the top entrance by the Gleeson College sign off Surrey Farm Drive. Please remember to travel along Surrey Farm Drive at no more than 25kmph when students are present and slow down to 10kmph once you have entered the College car park. Please do not park or stand, even briefly to drop students, in Surrey Farm Drive where this is clearly prohibited – along the stretch of road, both sides, opposite the car park area. Parking or standing are permissible further downhill along Surrey Farm Drive in front of the Gleeson ovals and well away from the bus zone areas.

Moving through and out of the parking bays: All parking bays are one way, running

away from the main administration building. If you have travelled along the bottom bay by the oval and been unable to find a park, then you must not turn directly into the next bay entering and travelling in the reverse direction. This is when traffic jams are caused. Instead, the only option you can take is to proceed out of the car park onto Surrey Farm Drive and then re-enter from the top entrance.

Picking students up: As a general rule, students should wait along the oval near the seats adjacent to the shade ports to be picked up from the lower bay. Cars should move as far along the oval towards the exit before stopping to pick them up. Students waiting near the top lawns above the student car park can be picked up from the other bays where cars will pull into a vacant space and wait. Please take special care along the road that travels past the main administration building at all times of the day as there are four pedestrian crossings that drivers need to be aware of that are in operation throughout the day.

Please DO NOT: Park along the road that enters the car park and travels past the administration building to the oval. Always move to the most advanced space available to allow following cars to enter and to avoid a build-up of vehicles. The top corner of the driveway will be marked with cones to highlight a no-standing zone to allow cars entry. Also, do not stop in the middle of a parking bay which again causes blockages. Keep to the left and move as far along the bay as possible. At the busiest of times, some cars may need to proceed out onto Surrey Farm Drive and move down below the bus zone to park and wait. Some parents also work out particular pick-up points outside of the car park to meet their children, even in streets beyond Surrey Farm Drive.

We thank you for your ongoing support in keeping our students and staff safe in our College car park.

Mr Shannon BertramAssistant Principal - Student Development

  • PARENT INFORMATION EVENING 2016

    Monday 15 February, 7pmGleeson College

A note has been sent home to inform all parents and caregivers that our annual Parent Information Evening will be held on Monday 15 February 2016 at 7pm. The information below explains the areas in which specific year levels will be meeting. Please note all meetings start at 7pm sharp and that students are not required to attend this evening.

Year 8 & 9: Information will be presented within your child’s home room presented by their Care Group teacher. Parents are asked to make their way to the Gleeson

College Courtyard and will be directed by staff to the correct classrooms.

Year 10: Information will be presented in the Gleeson side Lecture Theatre within the Dame Roma Mitchell Centre, please follow directions from staff.

Year 11: Information will be presented in the Thiele Side Lecture Theatre within the Dame Roma Mitchell Centre, please follow directions from staff.

Year 12: Information will be presented in the Gleeson College Learning Centre, located on level 2 of the Lowes Building, please follow directions from staff.

We ask that every family be represented to

ensure that maximum parent understanding and support is achieved for students at each year level of study. Research has shown that student performance is directly proportional to parent interest, support and encouragement. If for any reason families cannot be represented at the evening, we ask that apologies be recorded on the Reply Slip provided via Care Group.

Each session will have its own distinctive, informative programs. Once these have been completed parents will have the opportunity to meet with all teachers in the courtyard where supper will be provided, the night will conclude approximately at 8:30pm, with some words from Gleeson College Principal, Mr Andrew Baker.

I ask that you mark this date in your diary and make every effort to attend. If you have more than one child at the College, you will need to decide which Year Level meeting to attend. There will be an opportunity to meet with all teachers during supper.
