YLEAD AUSTRALIAN STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE

Over the Christmas holidays, Gleeson Student Leaders’ Luke Librino, Domenic Coscia, Madeline Lensink, Fabian Morales Vargas and Gabriella Centofanti were fortunate enough to attend the Australian Student Leadership Conference run by the yLead association. For three days we were able to learn much about how to become effective young leaders.

The experience gave all students an opportunity to go beyond their comfort zones and discover and develop their own style of leadership. With the guidance we received from our Youth Mentors, we developed our skills in public speaking, event planning, building team unity and learnt the importance of seeking opportunities to take action.

Our conference also included two very extraordinary guest speakers - Kate Rush and James Johnson. Kate spoke to us about the importance of being the best possible you and that no matter what, taking responsibility for our shortcomings is as important as taking pride in our successes. James shared the ways in which he was able to support worthwhile causes in his

community, as well as many new ideas and methods that we, as students, could implant within our own schools.

The conference was a fantastic opportunity for Gleeson College students to network and share ideas with other schools around Adelaide. Connecting with other like-minded student leaders gave us a fantastic opportunity to listen to the initiatives different schools were planning on implementing. We were especially glad to have Mr Francis visit us, which allowed us to discuss and share with him all we had learnt.

By the end of our time at yLead we came away equipped with the knowledge needed to improve our skills, but also assured that leaders are just learners in front of other people.

We’re extremely excited about the year to come and cannot wait to put into action the things we have learnt. Fabian Morales Vargas &Gabriella Centofanti,2015 College Presidents

A CHANGE FOR THE BETTER

Dear Gleeson Families,

It is my pleasure to extend a very warm welcome to all of you for the New Academic Year 2015. I hope that all families had a happy and holy Christmas and I wish everyone a successful and joyous new year.

This year we enter our twenty-seventh year of education at Gleeson College and I am sure it will be another exciting and successful year for our community. Some key elements of our planning for 2015 include the following:• Continuing the successful

implementation of our new Learning Management System, iScholaris.

• Fully implementing the BYOD program for all students.

• Continuing staff professional learning, especially through collaborative activities such as classroom observations.

• Completing the formal articulation of a school-wide pedagogical framework begun in 2014.

The year has started smoothly with all students settling well into their new subjects and classes. School spirit is running high on the back of the great results produced by our Class of 2014 and we will have a formal opportunity to recognise their magnificent efforts at our Academic Assembly on Wednesday 18 February.

In fact, the academic results of all students at Gleeson College in 2014 were outstanding with some 98% of all results (Year 8 - 12) for Semester 2 in the A - C grade range.

The academic ‘bar’ has certainly been set high for 2015 and we will endeavour to improve on these results yet again.

BYOD“Changing is difficult,

not changing is fatal.” (Unknown)

A fundamental shift (change) that is currently taking place in education is the reshaping of the learning landscape through the arrival of BYOD (bring you own device). At Gleeson College this change began last year with a trial BYOD for our Senior students in Semester 1, and a similar trial for our Middle School students in Semester 2.

We decided through consultation with all stake holders, that the best way forward for our community was a true BYOD which allowed all students to bring in their own device rather than a device stipulated by the College. This type of BYOD can often be more difficult for the technicians and staff involved at the College but it does preserve a sense of equity and a more personalised, student-centred approach to learning.

Arnold Bennett said: “All change, even a change for the better is always

accompanied by discomfort”.

The introduction of a BYOD program represents uncharted waters for most schools and therefore a steep learning curve. As part of our trial period and subsequent introduction of the program, we have run a BYOD feedback line through our email system. I would like to thank the many families who used this means of communication to help us refine our program through their perceptive and sometimes challenging questions.

We have deemed 2015 to be a transitional year in which we will endeavour to resolve any arising issues with our BYOD program however the experience thus far has been an overwhelmingly positive one.

Year 8 CampAs I write, our Year 8 students are enjoying a three day camp at Wallaroo and Port Hughes. The induction camp provides a perfect opportunity for the newest members of our community to meet and make new friends whilst learning about our College and what is means to be a member of this fantastic community.

Please look out for a camp report and lots of photos in the next issue of The Globe.

Parent Information Evening 2015A reminder to our families that this very important evening takes place on Monday 9 February, commencing at 7.00pm. I urge all families to come along, meet with relevant teachers and receive important information pertinent to your child’s year level.

CAR PARK COURTESYWe kindly request families please read the following timely reminder regarding the safe flow of traffic in and around the Gleeson College car park. While there is a feeling of congestion when things go wrong, we have found that if all drivers follow the directions set out below, then traffic flows smoothly and the car park empties reasonably quickly.

Entry: Is always from the top entrance by the Gleeson College sign off Surrey Farm Drive. Please remember to travel along Surrey Farm Drive at no more than 25kmph when students are present and slow down to 10kmph once you have entered the College car park. Please do not park or stand, even briefly to drop students, in Surrey Farm Drive where this is clearly prohibited – along the stretch of road, both sides, opposite the car park area. Parking or standing are permissible further downhill along Surrey Farm Drive in front of the Gleeson ovals and well away from the bus zone areas.

Moving through and out of the parking bays: All parking bays are one way, running away from the main administration

building. If you have travelled along the bottom bay by the oval and been unable to find a park, then you must not turn directly into the next bay entering and travelling in the reverse direction. This is when traffic jams are caused. Instead, the only option you can take is to proceed out of the car park onto Surrey Farm Drive and then re-enter from the top entrance.

Picking students up: As a general rule, Year 8 and 9 students should wait along the oval near the seat adjacent to the shade ports to be picked up from the lower bay. Cars should move as far along the oval towards the exit before stopping to pick them up. Year 10 - 12 students should wait on the top lawn above the student car park and can be picked up from the other bays where cars will pull into a vacant space and wait. Younger siblings can wait with their older brother and/or sister. Please take special care along the road that travels past the main administration building at all times of the day as there are four pedestrian crossings that drivers need to be aware of that are in operation throughout the day.

Please DO NOT: Park along the road that enters the car park and travels past the administration building to the oval. Always move to the most advanced space available to allow following cars to enter and to avoid a build-up of vehicles. Also, do not stop in the middle of a parking bay, which again causes blockages. At the busiest of times, some cars may need to proceed out onto Surrey Farm Drive and move down below the bus zone to park and wait. Some parents also work out particular pick-up points outside of the car park to meet their children, even in streets beyond Surrey Farm Drive.

We thank you for your ongoing support in keeping our students and staff safe in our College car park.

The Federation of Catholic School Parent Communities is many things for many people!

Our core business is to be the voice of parents who have chosen a Catholic school for their child. We advocate for affordable Catholic schools that are accessible to all (choice), access to excellent educational experiences as the right of all children (quality and equity) and the right of parents to be collaborators in their child’s learning and schooling (voice).

How do we do this?We advocate for a greater public investment in education for all children and an equitable share of public funds for students in Catholic schools. Politicians and policy makers listen to us.

Consult with parents on key education issues and represent Catholic school parents in decision making and advisory forums in relation to national, state and Catholic education policy and initiatives. We listen to parents. We affiliate with and contribute to the work of Australian Parents Council (APC) and Catholic School Parents Australia (CSPA) to ensure a voice at the national level. We have national political clout.

Communicate and connect with parent groups and parents in SA Catholic schools. We empower parent communities.

Develop and share information and resources that empower parents with the knowledge and skills to support their child’s learning, capabilities and wellbeing. We support parents and families.

Lead and support parent and family

engagement in learning and schooling. We support school leaders, teachers and school communities through:

• Practical and individualised consultancy for school communities.

WE WARMLY WELCOME OUR JAPANESE HOMESTAY STUDENTSWe would like to warmly welcome our Japanese Homestay visitors from Kogakuin Junior High School and Kyoto Bunkyo High Schools to Gleeson College.

Eleven students are currently visiting us, participating in our ever-growing International Study Exchange Program. All students, who have visited Australia before, have been welcomed into the homes of members of our Gleeson College community, and have settled in comfortably.

We had three students from Kogakuin JHS arrive the week before Gleeson students returned to school, and they shared a week of intensive English language study with Mrs Tanya Welden. These students will return to Japan at the end of March.

Eight students from Kyoto Bunkyo HS arrived last week. Seven of these eight students visited us back in 2013 for a three-week Homestay visit, and have now returned for an 8-month stay!

All students are staying with host families and are enrolled in a range of Year 10 subjects that will give them an authentic experience of what it’s like to be a high school student in Australia. The students have all been studying English for several years and some are more confident than others, but they are all here to practise and improve their English. They all have good understanding of spoken English and we hope that you will make them feel as welcome as the Stage 1 Japanese Class did this week by throwing them a welcome party!

‘AUSSIE-FOOD’ WELCOME PARTY TESTS THE TASTEBUDS!

Our Stage 1 Japanese Class hosted an ‘Aussie-Food’ welcome party for our visiting Japanese Homestay students in the Flexible Learning Centre on Tuesday morning.

To start the party, all members of our class took turns to stand and introduce themselves (and what they enjoy doing) in Japanese language, while our Homestay visitors did likewise, but in English!

Our students then presented the group with ‘Gleeson’ bags including pens, lanyards, keyrings and other momentos for them to take home at the end of their stay.

Then the fun began with all students enjoying some ‘Aussie’ party foods, including Twisties, Kettle chips, Arnotts Shapes, Pods, lollies, Lipton’s Ice Tea, Tim Tams and of course some Vegemite. Let’s just say the Tim Tams were much better received by our visiting students than the Vegemite!

Recipe Legend:C = Cup | T = Tablespoon | t = teaspoon

Welcome to 2015 from sprout.ed!

We hope you had a great break and are looking forward to trying some new healthy and delicious recipes this year!

Who loves mango??? ....We do!!! Its heating up this weekend so these mango recipes are a perfect way to cool down and enjoy a healthy sweet treat!

Give Me a Boost >Coco Mango Smoothie

Makes 3-4 smoothies (depending on size of jars/glasses you serve them in)

INGREDIENTS:1 large mango (or 2 small), flesh removed from the seed500ml coconut water500ml water1T chia seeds2 large handfuls of greens (I used spinach)2 scoops liquid stevia(or 2t natural sweetener of your choice)

METHOD:1. Add all ingredients into a blender, blitz until smooth.2. Drink now or store in jars full to the top in the fridge for up to four days.

TIPS:For an instantly chilled smoothie, use 3C ice cubes instead of water or use frozen mango!

Give Me a Boost >Mango, Coconut & Macadamia Ice-Cream

INGREDIENTS:1 x 400ml can of coconut milk1 x pkt Frozen Mango halves (in the frozen packet, you get approx. 1 whole mango frozen - I got mine from Tony and Marks Fruit and Veg)1/4 C Maple Syrup1t Cinnamon1t Vanilla Extract1/4 C Macadamia Nuts

METHOD:1. Place all ingredients into food processor and blend until you get a smooth consistency.2. Fill up ice-cream moulds or place into a container.3. Freeze for a min. of approx. two hours.4. Eat and enjoy!

TIPS:If using ice-cream moulds, take them out of the freezer approx. 10 mins before serving so they defrost a little > this makes it easier to pull them out if the moulds.

GOING NUT FREE > remove macadamia nuts, and add anything else, some ideas> chia seeds, raw cacao nibs or sunflowers seeds or do not replace the ingredients with anything > ice-cream will still taste delicious!
