Hello and welcome to my very first season at Queen’s HallIt is an absolute delight to be the new Artistic Director and I have received a wonderful welcome from staff, friends and customers. The Autumn Season is an exciting mix of live theatre, dance, film and music to help you fill the longer evenings of autumn.

The season is the rich blend of performance and exhibitions that you have come to expect from Queen’s Hall Arts alongside new experiences. Live in the Library will bring music and theatre to the Library and Pay What You Decide will allow you to try a new performance only paying what you want as you leave! And Queen’s Hall Arts is honoured to present the film premiere of ‘The Audition’ created by our very own youth theatre, The Projectors.

We’re also thrilled to invite you to experience some innovative productions; from immersive theatre (Off the Grid) to a gig that is a play (One Life Stand) or Choreocracy where digital technology allows the audience to direct the performance.

From the light and colour of our Matisse exhibition in September through the noise and excitement of family theatre and workshops to our traditional end of season panto (and not so traditional improv panto) there is plenty to enliven your senses as the days shorten.

Matisse: Drawing with Scissors Late Works 1950-1954 Saturday 15 September – Saturday 20 October

GALLERY ONE & TWO

The French painter, sculptor and designer, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was one of the 20th century’s most influential artists. His vibrant works are celebrated for their extraordinary richness and luminosity of colour and his spectacular paper cut-outs were his final triumph.

Matisse: Drawing with Scissors, a Hayward Gallery Touring exhibition from the Southbank Centre features 35 posthumous prints of the famous cut-outs that he produced in the last four years of his life, when confined to his bed. It includes many of his iconic images, such as The Snail and the Blue Nudes.

The Blast: Roger Coulam Saturday 27 October – Saturday 24 November

GALLERY ONE

For a decade Roger Coulam has photographed Blast Beach near Seaham on the County Durham coastline, a place once blighted by heavy industry. Dawdon Colliery sat on the cliff top there for 84 years dumping millions of tons of coal waste straight onto the beach. A major clean-up began in 1997 but mining pollution remains.

His pictures consider what would be left behind if our society ended today, and how our lives and culture might be interpreted by the people of the future. He has collected cultural objects found scattered and washed up on Blast Beach and made striking and thought provoking compositions with them.

View from the Tunnel: Dominic Richardson Saturday 27 October – Saturday 24 November

GALLERY TWO

Dominic was born and lives in Alston, Cumbria. At the age of 2, Dominic was involved in a road traffic accident that resulted in him acquiring a brain injury. Despite this difficult start, Dominic, now 24, has pursued an interest in art undeterred. Finding it difficult to paint with brushes, he mainly applies paint with his hand.
