It was somewhat unexpected this year that our student enrollment came in higher than we had anticipated. This increase in students resulted in some crowded classes that we have since dealt with through some additional staffing resources from the district. We have balanced most of our class sizes and have our largest classes reduced to much more manageable numbers. We are very proud of our 90% on-time graduation rate. Student success is our overriding focus and all of the work we do aligns with our focus. 90% is a good number but we still have more work to do because there are students who we have not been able to help yet. One of the big changes this year is in the number of non-student teacher workdays on our school calendar. We have fewer full day releases. This year, to help make sure we still have time to work on the business of educating our students; the district has planned more ½ day early releases. On these ½ days, students will be dismissed at 10:20 am and teachers will then have time to do professional development that supports their work in the classroom with our students. These ½ days are critical to our work supporting student learning and we appreciate having this time. Finally, I want to say a word about getting involved in our school community. We are very fortunate to have a PTSA, Sports Booster Club and a Music Booster Club along with a variety of other parent groups who all work to support our students in the classroom, on the field or court, and on the performance stage. We are always looking for more parents to join these groups and if you have an interest, please check out our school website for more information about these parent groups and who to contact if you want more information about how to join. Welcome to the 14-15 School Year Dear MTHS Parents and Students: As I write this, we are well into the start of another school year. Students and teachers have been back for about a month and we have settled into our routines. As we move forward, I wanted to share some important updates with all of you.

We still have a few places where we are larger than we would like to be, but for the majority of our classes, sizes are just about where we would like them to be.

We are very proud of our 90% on-time graduation rate. Student success is our overriding focus and all of the work we do aligns with our focus. 90% is a good number but we still have more work to do because there are students who we have not been able to help yet. To everyone who is a new member of our school community, welcome! To everyone who is a returning member of our school community, welcome back! We are looking forward to a great school year. Welcome Lauren Chetty, our new On-Time Graduation Welcome! Coordinator! Lauren grew up in Spokane and graduated from Eastern Washington University with a B.A. in Secondary Education. Soon after graduation, she moved to the greater Seattle area and started working for the Shoreline and Edmonds school districts as a Substitute Teacher. Last year she worked at Edmonds-Woodway High School in the counseling center providing staff and student support. Lauren is very excited to be here at Mountlake Terrace! As the On-Time Graduation Coordinator, she will be meeting with a select group of 10th and 11th grade students to track their academic progress and provide additional support in areas of concern.

Counseling Department Drop-In times: Counselors are available to see students on a drop-in basis all of 4th period, which includes both lunches. The Counseling Office will be closed from 12:15-12:45 for counseling staff lunches. Students may make appointments with their counselors outside of these hours.

How is my student doing? While academic success is the primary goal we share with parents, students are often less likely to share their academic progress with parents as they get older. This is normal behavior for adolescents as they move toward independence. However, parents and guardians still need to monitor how their student is doing in school. Parents can check your student’s current grades (updated every 2 weeks by staff), attendance, graduation requirements and progress towards graduation, staff names, voice mail numbers, email, report cards and a wealth of student and school information via Skyward. Click on the Skyward button on our MTHS homepage and then log-in using your individual login and password. Call the Counseling Office if you have misplaced this information. Better yet, let your student show you how to access the information.

Peer Tutoring: All members of Honor Society have a requirement to participate in Peer Tutoring. If your student needs a tutor in any subject, have them contact Ms. Petterson in the Counseling department to request a tutor.

Community Homework Center

This is held at the Terrace Park Elementary School Library every Tuesday and Thursday, 5:30-7:30 pm. Volunteers from the community will be available to help with all subjects. It is available on a drop-in basis; students should bring their homework and materials with them. PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Call Pat Cordova at 425-279-3739 if you can lend a hand.

The Snohomish Public Library system has homework assistance available online. You need to have a library card and log-in information, which is easy to get at any library. See www.sno-isle.org/explore/helpnow/

The service has been expanded to include skills tutorials, writing critiques, practice tests, and foreign language help. Sno-Isle’s selection of databases is outstanding – all that is needed for access is a current library card #.

What else can I do to help my student? Weekly progress report forms (located on the Counseling Center counter) are one way to help a struggling student stay on track. Students can take these forms to teachers before or after school and have the teacher comment on their progress, or confirm that the correct homework assignment was written down. This is often a good communication time with student and teacher, especially if the student is getting off track.

Attn: All parents & guardians: In a perfect world, we would all get a good night’s sleep and start the day with breakfast! But it is especially important for students to enhance their learning power during the day by starting the day out rested and well nourished. Also, we cannot stress enough how important it is that students ask for help early and often when struggling in a class. Most teachers are in their classes before school and are available to help. Your student still needs your attention, especially with organization and keeping a planner up to date as to deadlines and testing, and knowing who their friends are. Encourage your students to take advantage of our school activities, clubs and athletic events. We know that MTHS is a great place to be, and gaining a sense of belonging here is a great way to foster success and enjoyment in these exciting years.

Please encourage your Senior to schedule a Senior Interview with their counselor asap!!! Individual Senior Interviews allow us

to help seniors identify their goals for their education beyond high

school, and to map out all the important steps involved in reaching

those goals. We update our website (see the Counseling/Career

center tab on the MTHS website) regularly on scholarship, college,

financial aid and other important events/topics at MTHS. If your

senior is applying for college, we encourage him/her to start early

and adhere to important deadlines.

Other timely information:

Official transcripts cost $1.00 and are ordered through the

counseling secretaries, Kim Runkel and Vicki Stewart, and

require 24 hours’ notice.

Counselor recommendation letters require a 3 weeks’

notice. Counselors need enough lead time to get feedback

from teachers and to give serious thought to writing a great

letter. Students must submit a senior resume and complete a

Letter of Recommendation Personal Data Form (available from

the Counseling Center tab) to their counselor as part of this

process. The information students provide helps us write the

best possible letter of recommendation.

Financial Aid Night is Tuesday, January 13th at 6:30 pm in

the MTHS Library. We encourage parents and seniors to attend

this event. It will be an opportunity to get hands-on help

completing the FAFSA, and to get information about financing

your student’s post-high school education generally. A Spanish

interpreter will be available as well.

Is your senior on track to graduate? Seniors should have at

least 16 credits and be registered for required classes. After

viewing your student’s Skyward status towards graduation, you

may have questions, especially about a senior still needing

to pass the HSPE (Reading & Writing), End of Course

(EOC) exams in math & biology or a state approved

alternative to graduate. Students who have failed a section

of either the HSPE or EOC exams may take the SAT or

ACT for free. A high enough score in either could count

for passing one of the state tests. See counselors for more

information or questions.

Check the Career Center Webpage often for updates on

information about SAT/ACT testing, college visits, scholarship

information, and more!

SAT tests:

November 8 (register by Oct. 9; late register by Oct. 28)

December 6 (register by Nov. 6; late register by Nov. 24)

Register for the SAT online at www.collegeboard.org

ACT tests:

December 13 (register by Nov. 7; late register by Nov. 18-21)

Feb. 7 (register by Jan. 9; late register by Jan 10-16)

Register for the ACT online at www.actstudent.org

All Juniors took the PSAT on Oct. 15th this year. We will receive the

scores following winter break; information about test and score

interpretation will be available at that time. We help students

understand their scores and provide them with vital information

for their junior year college planning, give tips on how to improve SAT

and/or ACT scores, etc. Juniors are also encouraged to attend college

representative visits to our school by checking in the Career Center to

sign up for upcoming events and checking Skyward.

The earlier juniors plan, the smoother their senior year and college

application process will go. Don’t wait until fall of next year to

start visiting colleges or going online to research colleges—try to

squeeze some visits in now.

Four year college bound juniors should sign up for either the SAT or the ACT test this spring so that they will have the results by the summer. The links to the sites are on the Career Center Webpage. This will give them time to re-take the test should they choose to do so in time for college application deadlines in the fall.

Juniors should have between 10 and 12 credits to be on track for

graduation. If your junior failed a portion of the HSPE last year, the

student needs to retake only that portion failed in the spring. All

juniors should be enrolled in math or a math equivalent. Juniors

must pass one EOC (End of Course) exam in math to graduate.

College-bound Juniors: FYI, the junior year is usually the last chance

a student will have to show their grades on a transcript sent to a

college next fall, since most college deadlines occur before grades

from first semester of senior year are posted to transcript. This is an

important year for juniors planning to apply to a four year college

right out of high school to show them what they can do!

All sophomores took the PSAT test on Oct. 15th this year. We

will receive the scores following winter break. Counselors will be

holding results interpretation sessions in January for students.

Now is a great time for sophomores to get involved in some school

activity or sport if they haven’t already. Participation in school and

community activities provides vital experiences for your student to

learn new leadership skills, further their interests, learn new

responsibilities, and learn more about themselves in the process.

Community service has become a pivotal item which colleges and

scholarship foundations look for when considering applicants. It is

also a wonderful way for a student to learn more about the world

outside themselves and help build self-esteem. The Career Center is

a great place to start looking at these types of volunteer activities.

Spring is the mandatory state-wide HSPE test which all

sophomores are required to take. Results will be mailed directly to

parents and guardians. Opportunities will be provided for

continuing retakes if needed in the summer and following years.

Congratulations, your student has made it into their high school

years and is hopefully learning to juggle 6 classes and do homework

every night! The high school transition is challenging for many

freshmen students—and parents. Good attendance is critical to

academic success, so we monitor it carefully. There is more

homework assigned, nearly every day in math especially, so if

your student says they have no homework it is worth investigation.

Though your student may want you to leave them alone about

school, let them know you will be monitoring their progress on

Skyward. Teachers update Skyward at least every two weeks.

NEW MTHS VALEDICTORIAN POLICY

Beginning with the class of 2016, one Valedictorian for the graduating class will be selected. The student with the highest Grade Point Average (GPA) will be the Valedictorian. For purposes of determining the highest GPA and the Valedictorian, MTHS will use a weighted GPA system.

Standard Courses

A = 4.0 pts. A- = 3.7 pts. B+ = 3.3 pts. B = 3.0 pts. B- = 2.7 pts. C+ = 2.3 pts. C = 2.0 pts. C- = 1.7 pts. D+ = 1.3 pts. D = 1.0 pts.

Honors and AP Courses

A = 5.0 pts. A- = 4.7 pts. B+ = 4.3 pts. B = 4.0 pts. B- = 3.7 pts. C+ = 3.3 pts. C = 3.0 pts. C- = 2.7 pts. D+ = 2.3 pts. D = 2.0 pts.

To qualify for Valedictorian, students may not have any P grades for core academic classes, and must attend MTHS for a minimum of 4 semesters. Students who select the Pass / Unsatisfactory option will not be eligible for Valedictorian, salutatorian, or be included in the Top % of the Senior Class. In the event of a tie, the Principal will review students’ academic records and make the final determination about selection of the Valedictorian.

Julie Hill, RN At MTHS Mondays

& Wednesdays

425-431-1066 [email protected]

Hello all! I’d like to introduce myself. I am Julie Hill and I am your school nurse. This is my

17th year in the district and at MTHS. Here in the Edmonds School District the nurses are

certificated, just like the teachers. We do not staff the health room but do train the people who

do to deliver care safely and legally. My job and my goal as your school nurse is to “manage”

the health needs of the students so that a health condition has no or minimal impact on

academic progress. I am here at MTHS every Monday and Wednesday but am in district

Monday-Friday and am glad to talk any day. Please feel free to contact me at 425-431-1066 or

[email protected] any time! Please inform me of any health condition your student

has, no matter how minor, especially if he/she takes medication for it. Thanks so much, Julie

Medication Policy: I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you the medication policy at MTHS. This

is often much confusion over whether a student can carry medication on their person and “self-medicate”

for acute or chronic illnesses.

Students can carry OVER THE COUNTER (OTC) medications on their person and self-medicate when

needed. Examples of OTC medications are Advil for headaches, Tums or Pepto-Bismol for stomach

upset, etc. Students can only carry the medication if necessary, bring in a one-day supply, and carry the

medication in the ORIGINAL container. We want students to stay in class! Their name needs to be

written on the outside of the container. We do NOT need a doctor’s order for this!

A student can carry prescribed medication for diagnosed medical conditions such as an inhaler for

asthma, EpiPen’s for life-threatening allergic reactions, and antibiotics for infections. All medication must

be in the original container with the pharmacy label attached with only a one-day supply of the

medication. I need to be aware of any student with a chronic health condition who carries prescribed

medication on their person.

Students who need medication, such as controlled medications (Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta, etc.), administered by school staff should obtain

the paperwork from the attendance office or go to the district website. The health care provider and parent must complete/sign the

paperwork and once the form and medication have been received, staff can administer.

Staff does not have a supply of medication that can be given to students such as Tylenol, Tums, etc. Legally, we can ONLY administer

medication to students who have written authorization from the health care provider and parent and the medication must be supplied by the

parent. Only staff that has been trained by the nurse can administer medication.

Health information is communicated with teachers through Skyward and this information is viewable by parents. Please go

Skyward to view the information, if any, written there and contact me with any update or new health information.

Explore Edmonds School District’s Health Services Department website! Here you can find out what school nurses do, our schedules,

download frequently needed health forms and lots of other health information.

Thank you for your assistance in keeping MTHS a safe and healthy place. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or

concerns. Julie Hill, RN Certificated School Nurse (425) 431-1066, [email protected].

1. Go to Skyward - click here to log-in or use the “Skyward” button on the homepage

2. Check your contact info, especially email & phone. Please do not change

your student’s email address to your own - we need everyone’s email addresses.

3. Check your emergency contacts’ info, especially email & phone Thank you!

With over 40 years of experience, Close Up is the nation’s largest non-profit and non-partisan citizenship education organization, and they are driven by a mission to help students become more effective and informed citizens. Thousands of American HS students take student trips to Washington DC with peers from around America to learn about: national and international issues, meet state and federal level policymakers, visit and learn about historical sites, and learn about how our government functions formally and informally. MTHS students, grades 9-12, have the opportunity to participate over Spring Break, April 5-11, 2015. Students, please stop by Room 213 to talk to Mr. Brophy for more information. Parents, please email [email protected]. There is a great website, www.closeup.org, to check out as well.

One of the most important factors impacting student success in school is attendance. Attending school consistently and on-time is very important. Washington State has a compulsory attendance law which requires that children attend school and which describes the reasons that an absence from school can be excused. The Mountlake Terrace High School Attendance policy can be found on the MTHS website and is also described in the Student Handbook, also on the MTHS website.

If you know in advance that your student will be leaving school early, please write a note in pen, dated, and signed. Please be specific in the date and time of the student’s departure. Instruct your student to bring the note to the Attendance Office either before school or during lunch. All notes must be turned in on the day of the early dismissal and prior to the student’s departure.

If you call the Attendance office for an early dismissal, please allow 20 to 30 minutes so we may expedite your student’s departure in a timely manner.

If you come to pick up your student, you will be required to present your picture I.D. Thank you for your cooperation. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Library

This year our school will be part of a pilot project, Removing

Barriers, that allows students to use their own computing devices

(laptops, tablets, smartphones) to access educational resources in

the classroom. As part of this project, students will also be

receiving Google Apps for Education (GAfE) accounts which

include access to Google Drive (30 GB of file storage), Google

Apps for editing and viewing documents, spreadsheets,

presentations, as well as Gmail, Calendar, Sites and Groups. All

school and Skyward communications are now being sent to these

new Gmail addresses. Students will be taught how to access these

accounts in their English classes within the next few days.

Once students are using their GAfE accounts successfully in

school, they will be allowed to use their own personal computing

devices in the classroom as directed by the teacher. By combining

student owned computing devices with the computers already in

the classroom, we hope to reach a one device for each student

ratio. Teachers can plan instructional activities knowing that all

students will be able to access information to deepen learning.

They can poll students and see responses instantly to assess where

they are in their learning. This will allow teachers to adjust

instruction immediately. Students will be able to work

collaboratively on assignments and contribute to projects

simultaneously.

We are excited about the educational potential for these new tools.

We look forward to working with you as a partner as we

implement this project. As with all change comes questions. We

have more information on our District website, including some

frequently asked questions.

This year the MTH Library is sponsoring a reading competition, the Battle of the Books. Students in all grades are encouraged to read the books on battle list. As the year progresses, teams will form and MTH will hold “play-offs” where teams will be compete using their factual knowledge of the contest books. All of the high schools in the District will pit their teams against one another in the Battle of the Books in late May. Would-be contestants should listen for announcements on HBN and in their English classes for more information on upcoming activities for individuals and teams. The competition titles are drawn from the Pacific Northwest Library Association’s Young Reader’s Choice/Senior Division 2015 contest list and the Evergreen Teen Book Award 2015 contest list.

The MTHS Music Boosters are looking forward to another great

year supporting our music programs. We have already had a well-

received Jazz workshop in August where the students put in five

days of good work, and had a great concert at the end. September

saw a great performance in Edmonds City Park by the Jazz 1

Ensemble for the Harsin Wealth Management Group. The "Night

On The Terrace" fundraising event on September 27th was a great

success. Pep Band had their first go at supporting our football team

at the Shorewood game last month.

Looking further down the road, Jazz 1 will once again audition for

the Essentially Ellington competition in New York next May.

Volunteers are always welcome! Visit us at www.mthsbands.org
