3He was despised and rejected by others; a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity; and as one from whom others hide their faces he was despised, and we held him of no account. 4 Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. Isaiah 53:3-5

Spring has arrived and with it signs that the covid pandemic that has plagued us for over a year is finally showing signs of abating. Many people have suffered loss and pain for many reasons during this past year. Healing is needed for everyone in some way. As members of United Methodist Women we understand that the power to heal is from God. The Scripture verses from Isaiah remind us that Jesus came and bore the price for our healing. Because of the wounds that He bore we can be forgiven and made whole in every way.

The Lucille Raines Residence is in the work of healing. People who have become addicted to drugs and alcohol need help to heal. Over forty years ago, United Methodist Women of Indiana joined together to enter into healing ministry by establishing Raines to help people heal from addiction. Many lives have been changed because of the support, encouragement, companionship and more they have experienced because of Raines.

Raines is owned by the United Methodist Women of Indiana. It is our responsibility to support the ministry of Raines with our prayers, our gifts, our witness to others about Raines, and by keeping up-to-date on what is happening at Raines and what are the current needs. We all have other ways we want to help the work of Christ in the world and that is good. Still, we need to remember the commitment we made and responsibility we assumed when we chose to establish the Lucille Raines Residence. There is still much healing that needs to be done through the ministry at Raines.

When you read this we will have celebrated Easter. Oh how we need the hope that Easter offers to us after this last year. As you celebrate the love and grace of God that is at work in your life, remember that your love, commitment and support are very much needed at Raines to give hope to those wounded by addiction.

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. ~Galatians 6:2

A man, while walking down the street, fell into a hole. The sides were steep and he was unable to get out. A priest happened along and saw the man who called out for help. The priest was on his way to visit a sick parishioner and hurried on. Soon a rabbi stopped at the hole and asked what had happened. The man asked the rabbi to help him out but the rabbi, noticing how steep the sides of the hole were, left shaking his head. After awhile a pastor walked by and looked down at the man in the hole who called for his help. The pastor was late for a meeting and walked away. A laborer stopped to inquire how he could help. The man asked for help to get out of the hole. The laborer jumped down into the hole. The man exclaimed, “Why did you do that? Now neither of us can get out.” “Oh,” said the laborer. “I’ve been in here before and I know the way out!”

It is impressive to observe how the residents of the Lucille Raines Residence support and encourage each other – because they have “been there before.” Who better to understand what we are going through in our lives than those who have been there before. The scripture instructs us to carry each other’s burdens. When the load is shared it becomes lighter.

Frequently asked to describe a day in the Life at Raines, no two days are identical. There is, however, a similarity. Rarely is there a day when someone does not express appreciation for the privilege of living at Raines – thanks which should be for YOU, for YOU are the folk who make this ministry possible.

One recent day – March 25 – was especially meaningful.

Mid-morning Eric, maintenance staff, and I were discussing building concerns, when all of a sudden, the conversation took an unexpected twist. Eric’s comment about the uniqueness of Raines elicited, “Tell me more.” Eric talked about how there is no other place like Raines, how the location is perfect, the building provides both space and togetherness, opportunity for privacy amid family atmosphere. From the heart, oh my!

And then, came mid-afternoon. Just delivered mail brought a flat 9x12 envelope addressed to Vanessa, who lived and worked at Raines several years ago. The receptionist brought the envelope to me, with a comment she didn’t know Vanessa, but the envelope looked important. It was from the State of Indiana. Called Vanessa. Curious what could be inside, she asked that the envelope be opened. Contents: Congratulatory certificate on her 50th Birthday. Her comment: I’d rather have one for eleven years clean! Without Lucille Raines, I’d be dead; there’d be no 50th Birthday!

In this Eastertide Season, THANK YOU – units, churches, individuals all – for providing Lucille Raines Residence. A building, yes, but even more, a recovery environment. Avery and Marsh ’s words:

Good-bye guilt. Good-bye fear, good riddance! Hello, Lord. Hello, sun! I am one of the Easter people! My new life has begun! Ev’ry morning is Easter morning from now on! From now on!

Grateful for your giving Mid 70s, Evelyn Saffer, herself in early recovery from alcohol addiction, visioned a

recovery community need. Simultaneous with program development was search for

a facility. United Methodist Women in Indiana had a building full of empty hotel

rooms. The two organizations pooled their assets – a program and a building.

They were BOLD and took a LEAP OF FAITH to SUCCEED – or possibly fail. 44

years later, Lucille Raines Residence is still standing (the recipient of many repairs

and upgrades) and the program has repaired many lives.

The residents now pay $120 per week for rent. The UMW support has increased from $10/member

to $12/member per year. As the local memberships have declined, so has the UMW general

support. Thankfully, some members, units, and friends have provided extra gifts beyond the

“askings”. In 2020 when the budgeted support from UMW members was $102,000, we were only

able to provide $82,000 for the routine operations. Fortunately, extra gifts had been received in prior

years and were available to cover that shortfall.

It must be remembered that during the past three years, special fund drives were completed for the

mortar and tuckpointing project and then, most recently, to immediately replace the air conditioning

system. We are most grateful for all those special gifts. Both projects are completed. THANKS for

every gift, large or small, as we all need to work together when we face such big challenges. Stop in

when you are in Indianapolis, visit with very grateful residents, and see your mission dollars at work.

As you meet together again, consider a special giving to

supplement your individual askings. It can be designated as

“Use as Needed” on the remittance to your district treasurer.

And as you review your personal assets, you may decide to

leave a gift to Lucille Raines Residence, the mission of

United Methodist Women in Indiana.

Much is required from the person to whom much is given.

United Methodist Women of Indiana also have been supportive of Lucille Raines and its residents by stepping up to the plate when a need arises. The most recent example is the need to replace the air conditioning unit. The response to the need was inspiring as money came in to pay for this added expense. You helped carry this burden!

May God bless each of us as we help carry the burdens of those in need.

Covid-19 changed a lot of things at Raines over the past year, but it didn’t

change the passion United Methodist Women and others have for caring

for the residents at Raines.

Food, games and gifts were given in a safe and generous way with hopes that

Raines Fest 2021 will bring us together again for fellowship and fun.
