Act One

Setting: Rose’s Apartment

Very basic set similar to what is shown above. Cliff is very quick and quirky in his responses in the first act and he needs to come off as arrogant and shallow. Rose is seems shy and standoffish but is very interested in Cliff.

Act 2

Cliff returns and after a while of debating Rose finally lets him in the house again. Rose is wearing Cliffs sweater. Rose is persistent that Cliff cannot go into the closet. When cliff finally opens the closet he feels like just another number because of all of the other sweaters.

Conclusion

Both Cliff and Rose are interested in each other but it is very vague and leaves the audience to guess what is to come.

The Woolgatherer Set Design

Page 8: The woolgatherer final pp

The stage is made to look like an apartment in order to depict the urban setting. The look of the stage will be broken up by the two acts according to where the performance is taking place in each act. Modern elements will be used in order to depict the time period as being the present.

Act One

Page 10: The woolgatherer final pp

One aspect to note for the set is how barren the apartment is. In terms of furniture, Act one should consist of an orange crate, table and chair to represent the main portion of the stage.

Page 11: The woolgatherer final pp

Considering how one aspect of the play is the focus on the boarded up window, the backdrop for the stage should be a single wall will a boarded up window to the side of it. The door is not necessary to include and the characters can be kept offstage with sound effects representing the act of knocking, opening, and closing of the door.

Page 12: The woolgatherer final pp

The apartment should also contain dried up plants which are meant to represent the theme of death. If possible, a fridge could also be included on the stage, though it may be better to simply have the characters walk offstage for that section then reenter.

Act Two

Page 15: The woolgatherer final pp

With the intermission, the stage will be set up giving priority to Rose’s bedroom since it is where the majority of the act takes place.

Page 16: The woolgatherer final pp

Bedroom should be kept relatively simple. For the sake of realism, a nightstand with a lamp can reside next to the bed. The background should include a plain wall

Page 17: The woolgatherer final pp

Considering how some of the characters actions involve the door, a door prop would be placed onstage. In order to not ruin immersion, the door should reside near offstage so as not to clash with the wall.

Page 18: The woolgatherer final pp

Instead of attempting to replicate a walk in closet onstage, the moments where Cliff interacts with the closet would be represented by him walking offstage and throwing sweaters onto the stage

The Woolgatherer Light Design

Light Design

Each act is set in a small and simple one bedroom apartment, and the lighting is set by a house lamp in the first act. The setting is nighttime, and the windows are boarded up so there is a natural dimness.

This natural darkness sets the mood as calm and relaxing while the two lovers get to know each other, however the darkness also represents the sadness which is depicted in Rose’s character through out the two acts.

Page 22: The woolgatherer final pp

Act One

All of act one takes place in the apartment, with Rose on the chair and Cliff on the orange crate. The small area is lighted by a house lamp.

Page 23: The woolgatherer final pp

Act two

• The acts starts with a monologue by Rose when she is in bed, the room is almost pitch black and Rose herself is barely visible.

• When Cliff knocks on the door the lights come on. The rest of the act takes place in the bedroom lit like a bedroom light.
