Community Garage SaleDate: May 5, 2018
Time: 9:00am – 2:00pmLocation: Woodridge Neighborhood
Garage Sale Tips1. Have your items priced with tags or labels and be ready to open.
2. Have plenty of cash and coin change and make sure you keep your money with you and secured at all times, such as in your pocket or fanny pack and a small cross over purse works well too.
3. Display your items on tables or big boxes turned upside down or a blanket or sheet. Customers don’t want to have to go digging for items still in boxes, however, kids clothing is okay to have in boxes. You can box them up in sizes and clearly label the box.
4. Move your vehicles across the street that day to leave some parking areas for customers or cars to pull into.
5. If you live on a side street or towards the back of the subdivision, make a sign with a poster board or box and write “GARAGE SALE” and draw an arrow pointing in the direction of your home or put the street name on your sign. If needed, put a few out leading to your home. Please remember to take all your signs down at the end of the garage sale.
Good luck and Happy Sale!

Volunteer for San Antonio’s Tricentennial
As you probably know, San Antonio is celebrating its 300th birthday with a host of events throughout 2018. You may already have taken part in some of the activities. But have you thought about volunteering with city agencies during this special year?
SA 300 is looking for volunteers to help in a variety of ways. You have a wide choice of dates, times and locations. You can be an Airport Ambassador, welcoming visitors to our city. You can help rehab older homes. You can help Animal Care Services with dog walking, cat care or office work. The list goes on and on.
For information on what opportunities are available and how to sign up, go to https://sanantonio.galaxydigital.com.
Tips to Prevent Mosquito BitesUsing the right insect repellent and other preventive actions can discourage mosquitoes, ticks and other biting insects from landing on you. Here are tips for other preventive actions you can take against mosquitoes.
Remove Mosquito Habitats• Eliminate standing water in rain gutters, old tires, buckets,
plastic covers, toys, or any other container where mosquitoes can breed.
• Empty and change the water in bird baths, fountains, wading pools, rain barrels, and potted plant trays at least once a week to destroy potential mosquito habitats.
• Drain or fill temporary pools of water with dirt.• Keep swimming pool water treated and circulating.
Use Appropriate Pesticides• Control mosquito larvae using the appropriate methods for
the habitat• Control adult mosquitoes using insecticides.
Use Structural Barriers• Cover all gaps in walls, doors, and windows to
prevent mosquitoes from entering.• Make sure window and door screens are in good
working order.• Completely cover baby carriers and beds with
netting.
Avoid Getting Bitten• Keep mosquitoes away from exposed skin by wearing long-
sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks.• Tuck shirts into pants and pants into socks to cover gaps in
your clothing where mosquitoes can get to your skin.• Stay indoors when possible, especially if there is a mosquito-
borne disease warning in effect.• Use EPA-registered mosquito repellents when necessary and
follow label directions and precautions closely.• Use head nets, long sleeves and long pants if you venture into
areas with high mosquito populations, such as salt marshes.• Replace your outdoor lights with yellow “bug” lights, which
tend to attract fewer mosquitoes than ordinary lights. The yellow lights are NOT repellents, however.

1. Add the orange oil and soap to the water and mix thoroughly.
2. DO NOT DISTURB the fire ant nest before applying the orange oil/soap/water mixture, no matter how much fun it is!! If you disturb the nest first, the ants will begin to disperse away from the nest and your treatment will be much less successful, if at all.
3. Beginning at the center of the mound, slowly pour the mixture onto the soil in a circle, gradually expanding the circle from the center
outward. Cover the mound area completely from center to edges.
4. USE ALL OF THE MIXTURE ON THE MOUND, no matter the size of the nest.
Results of the Agrilife field tests showed a better than 70 percent success rate of treatment when compared to boiling water, regular water and other similar treatments. After treatment, you should be able to continue working within an hour or so. Be sure to take precautions for the few ants that may still be alive.
How to Get Rid of Ants in Your PlantsGot ants in your plants? There are three simple ingredients you can mix to create an effective and natural treatment for fire ants.
Invariably, homeowners and gardeners cross paths with one of our least favorite landscape denizens: the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta), commonly known as the fire ant.
Fire ants have been the bane of landscape enjoyment for many years in Texas and have stung their way into the doghouse of many humans and pets alike. For those whose landscape work is rudely interrupted and delayed by fire ants, the question arises “What can I use to kill these fire ants relatively quickly and still be able to finish my work without lots of pesticide residue hanging around?”
The answer comes from years of field research by entomologists with Texas A&M Agrilife Extension and it’s an easy, effective and natural remedy you can concoct at home. There are three simple ingredients: water, orange oil and blue Dawn® dish soap.
Here is the recipe:
1 gallon water 3 ounces blue Dawn® dish soap (Why blue Dawn®? Research showed it worked better than other brands and colors.)
1.5 ounces orange oil (Be sure to use the correct measure — orange oil at a 3-ounce-per-gallon rate is used as a natural herbicide and will burn plants.)
The soap helps the orange oil mix well in the water and stick to the ants in the soil. Apply the mixture following these easy steps:
