IMPORTANT SHOTS
FROM THE WOMAN IN
BLACK OPENING.
ANALYSE CAMERA ANGLES AND
PURPOSE/EFFECT
This close up of the ‘doll’ builds up the feelings and emotions via enigma.
As this is a close up you are questioning who is playing with the dolls and why are they
playing with them as you cannot see any of the action surrounding the doll. The use of the doll
hints the genre will be horror as it is creepy and the concept of what is happening on screen is
sinister due to not knowing who is playing with the doll and tea set .
ENIGMA
This wide shot draws upon the stereotypes of young girls in horror films. Typically in horror
films young children, especially girls, are emphasising the action and are used to scare and
cause tension. The eye line level of the camera creates the feeling that, as an audience, we
are sat with the actors participating in what they are doing.
CULTURAL- STEREOTYPICAL
The girls costumes are old-fashioned and it creates a feeling of ‘innocence’ as they are very
cute and girly. The actors all look happy and sweet- which juxtaposes what happens in the
upcoming clips. The mid-shot allows us to see the characters facial expressions clearly and
the shot size allows the space for two girls rather than one- which would be in a close up.
COSTUME AND ACTORS
The wide shot of the three girls shows them looking off camera and being fixated with a
certain object. The use of the eyeline match shows us what the girls are looking at. The
movement from shot to shot is very sinister, eerie and it builds enigma of us thinkig ‘what are
they looking at that for?’
EYE LINE MATCH
The close up of this shot build up tension and action from Rolands theory. This shot makes
the audience question what's going to happen and causes them to start adding up and
connecting the narrative and thinking about what’s happening.
