Beatle-mania beginsMarch 22, 1963

Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison, collectively known as The Beatles, released their debut album, Please Please Me, setting of ‘fandemoni-um’ around the world. The record stayed at the top of the UK album charts for 30 weeks, replaced by their own second release, With the Beatles. In 2012, Please Please Me was voted 39th on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Exxon Valdez oil spillMarch 24, 1989

The oil tanker Exxon Valdez struck the Bligh Reef off the Alaskan coast, spilling some 11 million gallons of crude oil into the ocean. It is con-sidered one of the most devastating environmental disasters in history, killing thousands of animals and dam-aging habitats of salmon, sea otters, seals and seabirds. It was the largest oil spill in US waters until the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster.

Patrick Henry’s rallying cry called for American independence from Britain came during a speech made to the Vir-ginia Convention. His speech is credited with convincing the Virginia House of Burgesses to pass a resolution deliv-ering the Virginia troops to the Revo-lutionary War. Among the delegates to the convention were future US Presi-dents Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.

It’s lights out from 8:30pm-9:30pm on Saturday, March 23, as 7,000 cities and towns around the world mark Earth Hour 2013. Each city has planned special activities to observe the hour, which entails turning off electricity in support of action against climate change. Coincidentally, it comes one day after World Water Day.

While all of Jamaica is encouraged to participate, the hour will be specially observed in Kingston with the Earth Hour Acoustic Concert organised by Jamaicansmusic.com. The event takes place at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre and features acoustic performances by Rootz Underground, Protoje, Jah9, SkyGrass, Jesse Royal and other acts.

Tickets (printed using environmentally-friendly materials, of course) are available at the Edna Manley School of Arts, Excelsior Community College and MailPac. Patrons without tickets will be asked to contribute $500 at the gate, which will be donated to the Jamaica Environment Trust.

The concert will be hosted by Terri Karelle Reid and Rootz Underground frontman Stephen Newland. Showtime is 6pm sharp.

rohan in japan

name:Rohan Mitchell

Nationality: Jamaican

Profession:Graphic Designer currently ‘rewriting

the screenplay of his life’ as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) in

the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) programme.

Why Japan?Like many people, I had the desire to travel and the need for change – all in the name growth and personal

development. Japan’s culture fascinated me with its conflicting collision of a

cutting edge system and an empire of tradition values.

Page 9: the wkndr eZine - Earth Hour

What your favourite Japanese drink?I’m not really one who downs anything too flamboyant. I keep it simple for the most part, so chuhai gets the pick. It’s fruit nectar mixed with an alcoholic beverage known as sochu (distilled from potatoes and rice).

What surprised you the most about Japanese culture?I’d have to say vending machines! Japan has got be the coun-try with the most vending machines per capita. If you’re even in the most remote place and parched, walk for 10 minutes in any direction and trust me, you’ll be okay!

What do you do for fun in Japan?Well, part of the norm is playing football from 6:30 to 9:30 in the pm a few days out of the week, which can be a bit brutal in the winter! There’s also eating out with some great friends I’ve made here, going to the river, attending barbe-cues, as well as a few bike tours, etc. Sometimes, I prefer to stay in and watch a movie, connect with family and friends or immerse myself in visual arts.

What is the experience like being an artist in such a culturally rich country? This place overfeeds you with creative inspiration. It’s a manga/anime lover’s heaven and that’s awesome, but I’m more into that brush and ink sweetness of Japanese calligra-phy. I’ve done a bit myself and also dabbled in some Japanese ceramics. I still keep the love for design and illustration alive by doing some volunteer work for the Jamaican Embassy and the administration of the JET programme.

What’s your favourite Japanese food?Oh boy… Me being the ‘foodist’ that I am, it’s hard to pick one particular thing, but let’s run with udon for now. This is basically noodles in some special kind of flavoured soy sauce broth, topped with cuts of scallion and grated ginger along with shrimp, fish, octopus or some type of fritter, an egg and what not.

Scotch & soda1 oz club soda1½ oz scotch

Fill cocktail glass with ice. Add scotch and club soda and stir gently.

Jock Collins2 oz scotch 1 oz lemon juice1 tsp granulated sugar3 oz club soda1 maraschino cherry1 slice orange

In a shaker half-filled with ice cubes, combine the scotch, lemon juice, and sugar. Shake well. Strain into a collins glass almost filled with ice cubes. Add the club soda, stir and garnish with the cherry and the orange slice.

Plugging out your fridge for an hour will not melt all your ice cubes. You don’t need to pull out the single malt heavyweights (Glenfiddich

anyone?), blended scotch (Johnny Walker) works just as well.

So simple you can make it in the dark.

Try this one when the lights are back.
