From the Pastor The Epiphany season is nearing a close. Lent be-gins on February 14 on which we obverse Ash Wednes-day. February 14 is also Valentine's Day. St. Valentine was an early Christian martyr in the 3rd Century. One story goes that Emperor Claudius II decided that single

men made better soldiers so he outlawed marriage in the empire. Apparently a priest, named Valentinius, defied the emperor's edict and continued to perform marriages. He was executed for treason. (Google St. Valentine and you will find that there may have been at least three Valentines who were martyred in the early Church.)

Whether or not Valentinius was actively supporting the desires of men and women in love with each other, St. Valentine's Day is a holiday for given special cards and gifts to those whom we love the most.

I think it is interesting that Valentine's Day--the day of lovers—is also Ash Wednesday. On Ash Wednesday we begin a season dur-ing which we pay special attention to God's greatest gift of love to humanity...the gift of Jesus. His ministry is told in the Gospels. The most detailed stories center around the end of Jesus' earthly minis-try culminating with his death on the Friday we call Good.

We cannot earn God's love...God freely gives it. By grace we have been saved. Please join us for worship, not only on Sundays, but, during this Lenten season, on Ash Wednesday, the following Wednesdays, and special services during Holy Week.

This group has been coming to Augustana for several years and brings a varied program each time. A freewill offering will be received to help defray costs of their tour. Members and friends of Augustana have the op-portunity to house students in groups of 2 or 3. The congregation provides a meal for them before the concert, but hosts provide snacks and breakfast. Will you open your house this year?

Downsizing? Remodeling? Most people have too much “stuff” they saw in the store and “had” to have. Is that you? Did you use it for a while and then get tired of it? Did you find something new that you “had” to have and don’t know what to do with the old stuff? MoM’S Thrift & Referral Center can help you out. Formerly known as Mission of the Messiah, the organization has moved from its original location on Correctionville Road to 2450 Transit Avenue. This is the same mall with Unclaimed Freight Furniture. MoM’S Thrift & Referral Center will come to your home to pick things up. Call 712-224-2803 to arrange a pickup time.

Epiphany Season Comes to a Close The last Sunday after Epiphany (February 11, 2018) is celebrated as Transfiguration of Our Lord. We often speak of mountaintop experiences as those joyous times we look forward to with excite-ment and look back upon fondly, such as summer camp or an annual hiking trip. The mountaintop moments in today’s readings were different: awe-inspiring, yes, but also full of devouring fires, clouds, and fear. Vision is obscured, the familiar becomes unknown, and nothing is the same. Peo-ple get lost in fires, clouds, and fear, unable to find their way, but God’s presence is where we get both lost and found. Many biblical encounters with God involved fear, pointing to the awesome reality of God that is much more than the gentle shepherd we often imagine (though God is that, too). God is, as C. S. Lewis famously said, “not a tame lion” (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, London: Harper-Collins Children’s Books, 2001, p. 197). The truth is, we can no more plan our mountaintop times with God than we can stay there forever, as much as we think we would like to. God’s place is to invite, ours to respond, faces bowed to the ground. Eventually, of course, the time comes to leave that mountain, walking with Jesus down to the val-ley and getting dusty with the ashes of daily life. Many churches symbolically “roll up the Alleluias” today, recognizing that this is the end of a glorious season celebrating Christ’s light and the entrance to a no-less-real season of Jesus’ and our own lives, the “valley” season of Lent. But that doesn’t mean there is nothing to do down in the valley. On the contrary, the traditional disciplines of Lent—fasting, prayer, and gifts to the poor—all help us maintain the eyes, ears, and heart to see and hear God whenever and however God appears. (From sundaysandseasons.com 2018.)

Stewardship Corner Thank you for the huge response to the end-of-the-year appeal last De-cember. For the first time in several years, we began the new year with both the General Fund and CIP (Building) Fund having positive bal-ances. The problem is that we should not have to make a special appeal to the end year in the black. Christian stewardship means a response to God’s blessings every day of the year. We still have ministry to do and bills to pay. We don’t pay dues to be-long to the Church, but we do have the opportunity to give thanks to God for all God’s blessings as we give back to God a portion of what God has first given us. Going to miss a Sunday? Bring two week’s of offerings the week be-fore. We also have service from the United States Postal Service, so you could mail your offering to us. Having your offerings sent to the church through an electronic funds transfer (EFT) is probably the easiest and most convenient way to ensure that your offering gets to the church on the schedule you choose. One option is called Simply Giving. Check out this link to get more details or call Ruth for more information. https://www.simplygivingbytfb.com/ Your personal banker should be able to help you set up and EFT if you would like to do it that way. Again, you control the frequency of giving as well as the amount. Thank you.

If You are Hospitalized...

If you are or a family member is hospitalized and you

want Pastor Del to come visit, please call the office (712-

255-7694) or Pastor Del’s cell (712-

490-6510). Neither hospital is calling

the church with names of those admit-

ted, sometimes even when you ask

them to!

Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent. This year that observance falls on Feb-

Lenten Giving What if, during Lent 2018, we practice serving all people and striving for justice and peace by giving something up...daily or weekly? Here's a possibility. On the first Sunday in Feb-ruary 24 small plastic baskets will be available for people to take home and use. (Please, one basket per family!) As a family, decide how often an object will be placed in the basket (at least weekly is sug-gested). Look for small items to place in the basket and talk about how people might like to receive that item. Perhaps you would choose a toiletry item or an individually wrapped food item. Pray that God would use these gifts for people who need them, but who are unable to purchase them for themselves. Bring the baskets (or plastic sacks needed to hold more items) to church on Easter morning where they will be blessed. During Easter week, we will sort the items and get them to the appropriate agency for distribution. Families may participate in this event even if we run out of baskets and you need to use plastic bags. This is only one way in which we live out our baptismal promises. Can you think of other ways?

Souper Bowl Sunday, February 4, 2018 In 2017, 6,548 groups participated in Souper Bowel of Car-ing, collecting $10,167,315 in cash and food items for local hunger relief charities. “Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those who are hun-gry”. ($42,420.18 was collected in Iowa.) Let us work together across the nation to tackle hunger and poverty. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around the Super Bowl week-end into the nation’s largest celebration of giving and serving. Be part of this movement of sharing God’s love with those in need. On Super Bowl Sunday the youth will be available with soup kettles to receive donations to feed the hungry in Siouxland. The money will be donated to Interfaith Resources which provides food for local food pantries. Non-perishable foods may also be donated. These will be distributed by the St. Thomas Episcopal Church and First Lutheran Church food pantries and the Blessing Box at St. Luke Lutheran Church. For more information regarding this active or-ganization go to “http://www.souperbowl.org/. This story tells how one small gesture can make a world of difference.

Lenten Midweek Services Begin February 21 Join us each Wednesday in Lent for “A Lenten Journey to the Easter Vigil” beginning at 7:00 PM. We

will use the format of Evening Prayer for our liturgy including components of Holden Vil-lage Evening Prayer. The five readings from the Easter Vigil are : Creation, The Flood, Deliverance at the Red Sea, Thirst No More, and Four Men in the Furnace.

Please join us at 7:00 for these services as we remember five stories of God’s great love for God’s people.
