From the Pastor January is gone. Wasn’t it just Christmas? Time moves too quickly. There are too many things to do and only a certain amount of time in which to do them. Jesus is busy on his mission in the remaining Gospel readings for this Epiphany season. Each Sunday

we will hear part of the “Sermon on the Mount.” We will finish with the end of Chapter 5, but the sermon continues through chapters 6 and 7.

Jesus has chosen his first four disciples who are brought into his itinerant ministry. We are invited to go with them as Jesus preaches, teaches, and heals.

The model of ministry we learn from Jesus is the model the Church has used for nearly two millennia. Although much has changed since Jesus was among us, people are essentially the same—sinners in need of hearing the Good News of God’s love for them. In spite of all the bad news we hear through various forms of media, humans are also behaving in ways that Jesus taught us. One of the parts of the Sermon on the Mount we will not hear this year is often called “The Golden Rule.”

Even nonreligious people know “The Golden Rule.” Jesus says in Matthew 6:12, “In everything do to others as you would have them do to you….” For quite some time in human history, humans have employed the “Un-golden Rule” which says, “Do to others be-fore they do to you.” I must admit that I utilize this twisting of the Golden Rule at times...and I don’t say that proudly.

Jesus’ primary message to the people who physically heard him and to those of us who read his words is the good news of God’s love for all people. And Jesus put his life where his message was when he gave himself up to die and take away the sin of the world.

Each Sunday and on other occasions we have the privilege to gather to hear the Good News sung, read, preached, prayed, eaten, and drunk. And we are sent from this place to live out the Good News we have experienced. We too, as followers of our Triune God, have a mission and ministry. We too are charged with telling others the Good News. We too are charged with living that Good News in thought, word, and deed. We too are recipients of the Grace of God that recognizes that we will fail...again and again...and that God will continue to love us and strengthen us.

Peace be with you.

Important Notice If you or a loved one is hospitalized and you want Pastor Del to come visit, please call the office or Pastor Del’s cell (712-490-6510). Ja’Net calls both hos-pitals on Mondays and Thursdays, but the best way to let us know is if you or your family calls.

Downsizing? Remodeling? Most people have too much “stuff” they saw in the store and “had” to have. Is that you? Did you use it for a while and then get tired of it? Did you find something new that you “had” to have and don’t know what to do with the old stuff? MoM’S Thrift & Referral Center can help you out. Formerly known as Mission of the Messiah, the organization has moved from its original location on Correctionville Road to 2450 Transit Avenue. This is the same mall with Unclaimed Freight Furniture. MoM’S Thrift & Referral Center will come to your home to pick things up. Call 712-224-2803 to arrange a pickup time.

Epiphany Season Comes to a Close The last Sunday after Epiphany (February 26, 2017) is celebrated as Transfiguration of Our Lord. We often speak of mountaintop experiences as those joyous times we look forward to with excite-ment and look back upon fondly, such as summer camp or an annual hiking trip. The mountaintop moments in today’s readings were different: awe-inspiring, yes, but also full of devouring fires, clouds, and fear. Vision is obscured, the familiar becomes unknown, and nothing is the same. Peo-ple get lost in fires, clouds, and fear, unable to find their way, but God’s presence is where we get both lost and found. Many biblical encounters with God involved fear, pointing to the awesome reality of God that is much more than the gentle shepherd we often imagine (though God is that, too). God is, as C. S. Lewis famously said, “not a tame lion” (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, London: Harper-Collins Children’s Books, 2001, p. 197). The truth is, we can no more plan our mountaintop times with God than we can stay there forever, as much as we think we would like to. God’s place is to invite, ours to respond, faces bowed to the ground. Eventually, of course, the time comes to leave that mountain, walking with Jesus down to the val-ley and getting dusty with the ashes of daily life. Many churches symbolically “roll up the Alleluias” today, recognizing that this is the end of a glorious season celebrating Christ’s light and the entrance to a no-less-real season of Jesus’ and our own lives, the “valley” season of Lent. But that doesn’t mean there is nothing to do down in the valley. On the contrary, the traditional disciplines of Lent—fasting, prayer, and gifts to the poor—all help us maintain the eyes, ears, and heart to see and hear God whenever and however God appears. (From sundaysandseasons.com 2017.)

USD Choir to Perform The University of South Dakota Chamber Singers will present a concert on Friday, March 3 at 7:30 pm. This group has been coming to Augustana for several years and brings a varied program each time. A freewill offering will be received to help defray costs of their tour. Members and friends of Augustana have the op-portunity to house students in groups of 2 or 3. The congregation provides a meal for them before the concert, but hosts provide snacks and breakfast. Will you open your house this year?

Worship at Blessed

Sacrament Catholic Church During the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (January 18-25), Lu-therans and Roman Catholics gath-ered on January 22 for a special worship service at Blessed Sacra-ment Catholic Church. The theme was “Reconciliation-The Love of Christ Compels Us.” We confessed ways in which we have erected walls of division: “lack of love, belittling, prejudice, broken communion, intol-erance, division, abuse of power, and isolation.” Western Iowa Synod Bishop Rodger Prois spoke about Declaration on the Way, a publica-tion which lists and defines 32 state-ments of agreement between Catho-lics and Lutherans concerning Church, ministry, and Eucharist! This worship service was only the beginning of further worship and dialogue between us and our Catho-lic brothers and sisters in Christ. Pastor Del attended a workshop at the Grace Gathering in New Orle-ans where he met six of the mem-bers of the Catholic/Lutheran team which has been working on this doc-ument since 1965. We at Augustana will be exploring this document in the months to come.

(Pictured above l-r: Pastor Paul Johnston, Trinity; Pastor Del Olivier, Augustana; Pastor Jeff Swanson, St. John; Father Daniel Rupp, Blessed Sacrament, Deacon Fred Karpuk, Blessed Sacrament, Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless, Diocese of Sioux City, and Bishop Rodger Prois, Western Iowa Synod, ELCA.)

Prayer Group at Augustana In Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, he writes: “Rejoice al-ways, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” And in his letter to the Ro-mans he writes: “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.” Whether our prayers contain polished paragraphs of carefully-chosen words or deep sighs, God listens. We have several prayers in our liturgy on Sunday mornings and other occasions. It is good to pray both privately and corporately. A suggestion has been made that we start an Augustana Prayer Group that would meet monthly at a time deter-mined by the group. One purpose of that group would be to examine different types of prayers. Another would be to pray with and for each oth-er. Please let Ginny Ericson know if you would like to be a part of the Augustana Prayer Group.

Circles/Women’s Bible Study Groups What comes to mind when you hear the word “circle?” Merriam-Webster defines it in this way: “a closed plane curve every point of which is equidis-tant from a fixed point within the curve.” It could also be described as a closed, spherical line. For centuries, women in churches gathered in “circles” for food, fellowship, and Bible study. That word, in today’s culture, might suggest a closed group of people. The Augustana Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA) have seen a marked decline in attendance at their circles. For that reason, they will no longer refer to the groups as Lydia Circle and Rhoda Circle, but will call them women’s Bible studies. Currently there is a women’s Bible study that meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 10:00 AM. Might there be people who would be interested in attending, but would prefer to meet in the after-noon? The other women’s Bible study meets on the first Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM. Both groups meet at Augustana and the women take turns serv-ing a dessert and coffee or tea. Pastor leads the monthly Bible studies. Anyone woman in the congregation (or friends of members) are welcome to attend these meetings. Please let either Marian Erickson, Bev Robinson, or Pastor know if you would like more information. Also let them know if you would like to attend a daytime study and prefer morning or afternoon. Those who attend don’t need to have all the answers! (Neither does Pastor Del, who leads them.) We meet to learn. Please check us out.

Christmas Photos “Jesus” and his family were part of our 5:00 Christmas Eve service. Paul Lindblom is pictured with his parents, Carl and Emily.

The Christmas Day ser-vice included our oldest member, Harriette McGuire, who will turn 100 on June 24. She attended worship with her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy & Eric Holtze and her son, Bill Dooley.

Souper Bowl Sunday, February 5, 2017 In 2016, more than 6,852 groups participated in Souper Bowel of Car-ing, collecting more than $10,476,115 in cash and food items for local hun-ger relief charities. “Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those who are hungry”. (Iowa totals $34,257.11.) Let us work together across the nation to tackle hunger and poverty. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around the Super Bowl weekend into the nation’s largest celebration of giv-ing and serving. Be part of this movement of sharing God’s love with those in need. On Super Bowl Sunday the youth will be available with soup kettles to receive donations to feed the hungry in Siouxland. The money will be donated to Interfaith Resources which pro-vides food for local food pantries. Non-perishable foods may also be donated. These will be distributed by the St. Thomas Episcopal Church and First Lutheran Church food pantries. For more information regarding this active organization go to “http://www.souperbowl.org/. This story tells how one small gesture can make a world of difference.
