GIVE Take Advantage of the Stock Market’s All-Time Highs If you own appreciated stock, consider meeting the remainder of your 2019 financial commitment to the church by donating common stock or mutual funds to TVLC. The actual stock or mutual fund must be directly transferred to TVLC’s brokerage account. The church would subsequently sell the stock or mutual fund and you would receive its full value towards your financial commitment. There would be no capital gains tax on the transaction and if you itemize on your taxes you may be able to deduct the full appreciated value of the donation. The stock must be transferred out of your brokerage account before year end to qualify for any 2019 tax donation. Further guidance can be provided by your brokerage firm or tax advisor. For more details on the simple process to execute a stock or mutual fund transfer to Tanque Verde Lutheran Church, please contact TVLC member, Jon Erwin at 520-731-2606. Calling All Actors and Singers! TVLC is seeking to gather up a troupe of thespians-at-heart to present an original play--a mystery musical--written by the grandfather of our Gathering Service worship leader, Alexis Burrows! Several adult actors are needed to portray characters in “The Postage Stamp Mystery,” a classic who-dunit filled with blame and blunder. Weekly rehearsals begin in January, and the play will be in March. If you are interested in joining the on-stage production or simply want to know more, please email Alexis at [email protected]. We know that is true and so we celebrated our blessings and laid the groundwork for sharing those blessings last weekend. About 300 of us enjoyed meals and time together, making new or deeper connections with others. And, we made over 160 financial commitments for 2020 to support our vision to welcome all, support and care for each other, reach out to those in need, and help connect people into life and relationship with God. If you have not yet had an opportunity to complete your commitment, you may do so by submitting it in the church office or during worship. Your commitments form the foundation for all that we do at TVLC to participate in God’s work. Wednesday Evening Bible Study The Wednesday evening Bible Study group has finished its fall study and will not meet again until after the holidays. It will resume weekly meetings on Wednesday, January 15. The next study will focus on the book of Philippians.

- Colossians 1:11-12aPRAY, BLESS AND SING:A Prayer for the Week: Lord Jesus, help us to give thanks for your reign and to forgive as we have been forgiven. Amen.Mealtime Prayer: Lord of lords and King of kings, we surely sing our thanks. Give us now our daily bread, gratefully received in heart and head. Amen.A Blessing to Give: May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from Christ’s glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience and joy.Hymn of the Week: Jesus, Remember MeCARING CONVERSATIONS: Discuss in your home or small group: • In what ways does a shepherd care for the flock?• Would you rather be a shepherd or a king? Why?• What is the difference between an earthly king and Christ the King?DEVOTIONS: Read: Colossians 1:11-20. The kings of the Old Testament were considered shepherds, and as shepherds they failed miserably. They scattered God’s sheep, God’s people, instead of leading them into the future with peace, justice, and trust in God. Jeremiah points out that God would have to intervene directly to execute justice and put an end to war (Jeremiah 23:1-6). In Colossians 1, we see the results of God’s intervention. We have been rescued from the power of darkness and have received redemption, the forgiveness of sins (vv. 13-14). This is no earthly shepherd or king: “For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,” and through whom all things—things in heaven and things on earth—have been reconciled to God (vv. 19-20). What we could not do, what God’s own earthly kings in Judah and Israel could not do, God did alone through Christ. For reasons that we cannot even fully grasp, list, or tell, we give thanks to God for the reign of Christ. Take a moment and—though never a complete understanding or list—give thanks for how Christ serves as ruler of the universe for you and all creation. Pray: Dear Creator and Redeemer, in Christ we give thanks for your goodness and mercy that far exceeds all that we can know or understand. Help us to give thanks as we are able. Amen.SERVICE: Luke 23:33-43 tells of a dark time in the life of Jesus. He was arrested and punished for something he did not do. Jesus did not get angry but asked God to forgive the people. On the cross, Jesus had a criminal on his left and on his right. One of them said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom” (v. 42). Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise” (v. 43). Christian ministries reach out to those incarcerated with hope through Jesus Christ. Do you know of a prison ministry? Pray for those who are in prison and for those who work with them.RITUALS AND TRADITIONS: Both adults and children lead busy lives. Moments of quiet are not easy to find. From cell phones to computers to work and school and sports, we fill our days with noise and screen time. This distracts us from God. This week’s reading from Psalm 46:10 reminds us to “Be still and know that I am God!” Take five minutes each day to turn off the television/radio, and be silent. Be still and listen to God. After the silence, write down your thoughts on a piece of paper and place it in your Bible as a marker for Psalm 46. At the end of the week, review your notes. Why do you think God desires stillness? What difference does it make? © 2018 Milestones Ministry,

In this GATHERING, you are seen and loved. No matter who you are, you are accepted without condition and you belong here. In this GATHERING, our relationships will deepen - with both God and with each other. In this GATHERING, we acknowledge that there are different ways we connect with God in worship.

During the service, you will have the chance to participate in different experiential stations:Candle Table - Light a candle to claim Christ’s light or to remember a loved one.Baptismal Font - Remember God’s grace poured out to you through the waters of baptism. Offering Basket - Give an offering to support

God’s work at TVLC and throughout the world. You can also give by going to tvlc.org/give on your mobile device.Arts & Crafts Table - Exercise your God-given creativity.Prayer Wall - Write your own requests and lift up others’ requests.Verses Table - Pick a verse to meditate and reflect on.Service Table - Contribute to an ongoing service project.

We’ve created spaces where younger worshipers may find comfort and a place just for them. Infants can find a spot on the “prayground” where the play gyms and bouncy chairs have front row seats! Toddlers can belly up to a table on either side of the chairs, pull out their busy bag materials and get to work! Kids and youth

are encouraged to take an active role in worship leadership. Nursery care is also available until noon for those who desire.

All are welcome to PARTICIPATE as assistants in the service. You can be a reader, usher, greeter or help in other ways. Please talk to Pastor Josh if you are interested in helping out!
