Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission
One of three Cathedrals in the Church of England Diocese of Leeds
Our purpose is serving Christ and transforming lives through welcome,
worship and encounter.
❖ Please join in at home, and in the Cathedral, by saying or singing the words in
bold type in this order of service.
❖ We apologise that the Hearing Enhancement Loop is not working.
❖ This service will be broadcast on YouTube and available for the following two
weeks.
❖ There will be no collection taken during the service but you are invited to make
a donation to the Cathedral, as part of your worship, using the donations box by
the door, or online, through the Cathedral website.
❖ As part of our work to help keep you safe and healthy, we are keeping some
windows and doors open to make sure the Cathedral is well ventilated, which
may mean parts of the nave are cold. We advise you, where you can, to dress
warmly when attending a service.
❖ Today’s flower arrangement of Fairtrade roses is given by Elaine and Mike de
Villiers in celebration of the beauty of God’s creation. It also reminds us to pray
for the preparations and work of COP26 – the global United Nations summit (1st
– 12th November, Glasgow) about climate change and how countries are planning
to tackle it. Why link Fairtrade and COP26? Farmers and producers in low-
income countries already suffer the impact of climate change even though they
contribute least towards it. Fairtrade certification is a driver of genuine, sustained
positive change.
❖ The funeral of Joyce Longthorn will take place at St John's Church, Clayton, at
1.00 p.m. on Monday 25 October, followed by private family committal at
Scholemoor.
❖ Cantors lead this morning’s worship. The organist is Shaun Turnbull. The choral
setting is by Keith Rhodes (1930-1992), former Organist and Master of the
Choristers at Bradford Cathedral.

Voluntary: Canzona in E minor, BuxWV 169 by Dietrich Buxtehude (1637/39-1707)
Greeting and Welcome The Revd Canon Mandy Coutts, Canon for Mission and Pastoral Development
We stand.
Silence
In the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Hymn
Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.
Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
thy justice like mountains high soaring above
thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.
To all life thou givest, to both great and small;
in all life thou livest, the true life of all;
we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
and wither and perish; but naught changeth thee.
Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
all laud we would render: O help us to see
’tis only the splendour of light hideth thee. Words: W. Chalmers Smith (1824-1908); 1 Timothy 1.17
Tune: ST DENIO; CP 474
We remain standing.

Prayers of Penitence
The word of God is living and active.
It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
All is open and laid bare before the eyes of him
to whom we must give account.
We confess our sins in repentance and faith.
Silence
Almighty God, we have sinned against you
and against our neighbour
in thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault.
We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your son Jesus Christ, who died for us,
forgive us all that is past
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life
to the glory of your name. Amen.
Almighty God,
who forgives all who truly repent,
have mercy upon you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in life eternal;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We remain standing to sing
Gloria in Excelsis

The president introduces a period of silent prayer.
Prayer of the day
Blessed Lord,
who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning:
help us so to hear them,
to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them
that, through patience, and the comfort of your holy word,
we may embrace and for ever hold fast the hope of everlasting life,
which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
We sit.
First Reading 2 Timothy 3.14 – 4.5 read by Catherine Warr
Continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned
it, 15 and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct
you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is inspired by God and
is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 so
that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.
4 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and
in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: 2 proclaim the message; be
persistent whether the time is favourable or unfavourable; convince, rebuke, and
encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will
not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for
themselves teachers to suit their own desires, 4 and will turn away from listening to the
truth and wander away to myths. 5 As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the
work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully.
This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Silence
We stand.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Your words are spirit, Lord,
and they are life.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Reading John 5:36-47 read by the Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Acting Dean
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
Glory to you, O Lord.
Jesus said to the Jews: “I have a testimony greater than John’s. The works that the Father
has given me to complete, the very works that I am doing, testify on my behalf that the
Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified on my behalf. You
have never heard his voice or seen his form, 38 and you do not have his word abiding in
you, because you do not believe him whom he has sent. 39 ‘You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is
they that testify on my behalf. 40 Yet you refuse to come to me to have life. 41 I do not
accept glory from human beings. 42 But I know that you do not have the love of God
in you. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; if another comes in
his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe when you accept glory from
one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the one who alone is God? 45 Do
not think that I will accuse you before the Father; your accuser is Moses, on whom you
have set your hope. 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about
me. 47 But if you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe what I say?”
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
Sermon After an opening prayer, we sit.
The Rt Revd Tom Butler
At the conclusion of the sermon, the organist plays an improvisation.
We stand.

The Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
We kneel or sit.
Prayers of Intercession led by Maurice Manktelow
In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ,
let us pray to the Father.
After each section this, or an alternative, response is used:
Lord in your mercy
hear our prayer.
At the end:
Merciful Father,
accept these prayers
for the sake of your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
We stand.
9
Giving and Receiving Peace
Since we are justified by faith,
we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has given us access to his grace.
The peace of the Lord be always with you
and also with you.
We offer one another a sign of peace, and offer our gifts to God.
The Table is set with bread and wine. Our offerings are received.
Hymn
Angel-voices ever singing
round thy throne of light,
angel-harps for ever ringing,
rest not day nor night;
thousands only live to bless thee
and confess thee Lord of might.
Thou who art beyond the farthest
mortal eye can scan,
can it be that thou regardest
songs of sinful man?
Can we know that thou art near us,
and wilt hear us? Yea, we can.
Yea, we know that thou rejoicest
o’er each work of thine;
thou didst ears and hands and voices
for thy praise design;
craftsman’s art and music’s measure
for thy pleasure all combine.
In thy house, great God, we offer
of thine own to thee;
and for thine acceptance proffer
all unworthily
hearts and minds and hands and voices
in our choicest psalmody.
10
Honour, glory, might, and merit
thine shall ever be,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
blessèd Trinity.
Of the best that thou hast given
earth and heaven render thee. Words: Francis Pott (1832-1909)
Tune: ANGEL VOICES; CP 377
We remain standing.
Great Thanksgiving Prayer
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.
It is indeed right and good, our duty and our joy,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
For he is your eternal and creative Word,
through whom all things came into being;
the Word made flesh who dwelt among us, full of grace and truth.
He fulfils the Law and the Prophets,
dying for our sins and rising again in accordance with the Scriptures.
He stands among us in his risen power, opening to us his living word,
and making himself known in the breaking of the bread.
Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven,
we proclaim your great and glorious name,
for ever praising you and singing:
Choir Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessèd is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
Accept our praises, heavenly Father,
through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ,
and as we follow his example and obey his command,
grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit
these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood;
11
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks;
he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.
In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks;
he gave it to them, saying:
Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.
Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself
made once for all upon the cross;
we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension;
we look for the coming of your kingdom,
and with this bread and this cup
we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord.
Great is the mystery of faith:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
Accept through him, our great high priest,
this our sacrifice of thanks and praise,
and as we eat and drink these holy gifts
in the presence of your divine majesty,
renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love
and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Through him, and with him, and in him,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
with all who stand before you in earth and heaven,
we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise:
Blessing and honour and glory and power
be yours for ever and ever. Amen.
We kneel or sit.
Silence
12
The Lord’s Prayer
Formed by his precepts,
as our Saviour taught us, so we pray
Our Father in heaven
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread
We break this bread
to share in the body of Christ.
Though we are many, we are one body,
because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion
Draw near with faith.
Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you,
and his blood which he shed for you.
Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you,
and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.
Choir Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world:
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world:
grant us peace.
Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of Holy Communion.
Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer.
When the Communion Administrant says “The Body of Christ” we respond “Amen”.
13
If you are at home and unable to receive communion, you may wish to use the following
prayer, after Richard of Chichester:
Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ,
for all the benefits you have given me,
for all the pains and insults you have borne for me.
Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,
I ask you to come spiritually into my heart.
O most merciful redeemer,
friend and brother,
may I know you more clearly,
love you more dearly,
and follow you more nearly,
day by day. Amen.
Communion Motet
When the Lord turned again the captivity of Sion :
then were we like unto them that dream.
Then was our mouth filled with laughter : and our tongue with joy.
Then said they among the heathen : The Lord hath done great things for them.
Yea, the Lord hath done great things for us already : whereof we rejoice.
Turn our captivity, O Lord : as the rivers in the south.
They that sow in tears : shall reap in joy.
He that now goeth on his way weeping, and beareth forth good seed :
shall doubtless come again with joy, and bring his sheaves with him. Psalm 126, Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924)
Prayer after Communion
God of all grace,
your Son Jesus Christ fed the hungry
with the bread of life
and the word of his kingdom:
renew your people with your heavenly grace,
and in all our weakness
sustain us with your true and living bread;
who is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen.
14
We stand.
Hymn
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
in a believer’s ear!
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
and drives away his fear.
It makes the wounded spirit whole,
and calms the troubled breast;
’tis manna to the hungry soul,
and to the weary rest.
Dear name! the rock on which I build,
my shield and hiding-place,
my never-failing treasury filled
with boundless stores of grace.
Jesus! my Shepherd, Brother, Friend,
my Prophet, Priest, and King,
my Lord, my Life, my Way, my End,
accept the praise I bring.
Weak is the effort of my heart,
and cold my warmest thought;
but when I see thee as thou art,
I’ll praise thee as I ought.
Till then I would thy love proclaim
with every fleeting breath;
and may the music of thy name
refresh my soul in death.
Words: John Newton (1725-1807)
Tune: ST PETER; CP 467
The Dismissal
Go now in peace, knowing that you have been born again,
not of perishable seed, but of imperishable;
and the blessing of God almighty
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
In the name of Christ. Amen.
Voluntary: Toccata by André Verwoerd
The concluding organ voluntary is offered as part of our worship.
