Wacky News“Mayor Stubbs is celebrating his 15th year as the mayor of the sleepy town of Talkeetna, Alaska. Not that amazing, you might think – until you realize Stubbs is a cat. Residents thought the candidates running for mayor weren’t up to scratch so campaigned to get the 15-year-old the honorary position with a write-in campaign. The feline has now become one of the longest-serving mayors in America. The moggy has around 1,000 friends on Facebook, which is more people than the population of the town (900).

We Have Workers! Not to many people can say it but Bakken Staffing can not only say it they can announce it to the world. Bakken Staffing located across from the Train Station on 1st Ave East in Williston, is geared up and ready to help Bakken Employees and Employers with the “Match Making Services”.

Bakken Staffing has developed a network of recruiting that allows them to access employees in over 55 markets nationwide. They are capable of providing nearly all HR functions for your company, from recruiting, drug testing, pre-screening, temporary staffing, temp to hire, or handling your employee housing solutions.

Some of the more interesting things I learned when speaking with Bakken Staffing was concerning their compassion for helping employees. As we know many people come to the area with no money, no plan, and no housing. John and Lori help these people by providing temporary jobs and permanent job placement. One of their programs even allows their temporary employees to get paid each day.

For an inexpensive fee employers can work with Bakken Staffing for nearly all their Human Resource needs. It was obvious to me that this was not the type of company here to make a fast buck and just place employees anywhere. There was a since of pride in the office and an obvious dedication to customer service.

The 2012 Williston Economic Summit and Tours (WEST) featured a trip through one of Williston’s newest apartment buildings.

The Confluence at Harvest Hills is set to open its first apartment building in mid-August. People on the WEST bus tour were some of the first to see the inside of the state-of-the-art modular building.

The apartment is made up of 42 separate boxes that were prefabricated at Chief Custom Homes in Aurora, Nebraska. The boxes were trucked to Williston and set onto the foundation with a crane.

The modular construction is considered very high-end because the buildings are manufactured in an indoor, climate controlled factory with precision.

After the boxes were set they were “stitched” together. The construction allows for double wall, ceiling and floor thickness in all 27 units. They are extremely quiet. It is very sturdy construction. The units are spacious and comfortable for family living.

The 15-acre project is located on the southwest corner of the Harvest Hills Subdivision. The site will have 10 buildings with 27 units per building.

Each of the buildings will house 27 completely furnished units: 11 three-bedroom; 10 two-bedroom and 6 one-bedroom units. The apartments range in size from 600 to 1275 square feet. Each apartment has a balcony and

every bedroom has its own bathroom.

The project is geared to oilfield companies that want to move their workers and their families to Williston. In fact, many of the building’s amenities are the result of talks with those companies. Workers want to find nice housing where everyone has their own personal space so that they will stay

here for the long-term. Retention of high-value and long-term employees is becoming a serious problem.

The foundation for the second building is complete and the modular units are expected to arrive this fall.Williston Economic DevelopmentBy Barb Peterson

Three months after entering a partnership with a grocer based in Williston, N.D., Coborn’s has decided to expand the company’s reach in western North Dakota. Late Thursday, Coborn’s announced it will build five new stores in the region by 2014.

The new Coborn’s and Cash Wise Foods stores will more than double the company’s presence in the area of the Bakken Formation, which for the past couple of years has been ground zero for some of the most frenzied domestic oil activity in decades.

“North Dakota is a prime market for Coborn’s to expand,” Coborn’s President and CEO Chris Coborn said in a statement. “Expanding our family of stores to include these new locations represents positive, strategic growth for our employee-owned company.”

A Coborn’s store opened in May in Jamestown, N.D. In April, Coborn’s partnered with Williston-headquartered JK Foods to co-own an

Economart in Williston and Food Pride stores in Stanley and Tioga, N.D., where they serve the significant population growth occurring as part of the North Dakota oil boom.

Being planned are Coborn’s stores in Stanley and Tioga, which will replace the company’s existing Food Pride stores; a Coborn’s store in Watford City, N.D.; and Cash Wise Foods stores in Dickinson and Minot. Twin Cities-based Oppidan Investment Co. will be the development partner for the construction. An investment figure was not available.

Coborn’s has 6,700 employees at stores and other operations in six states.

The once rural town of Williston, N.D., is projected to double, and maybe even triple in the next five years.

Unemployed residents of other states have been migrating to the Peace Garden State in search of work. Companies are able to find workers which, otherwise, would have been hard to get people to move to a rural area like Williston.

The work and business opportunities are wide-ranging and plentiful, but small towns are racing to keep up with demand for housing.

The town has had to regulate where RVs are parked and crack down on sleeping in the parks. It’s not unheard of for people to live out of their cars. The

Williston job services office actually has handout information on where to find showers.

While potential for high wages is a draw, many employers are looking for skilled labor; applicants with actual experience and certifications. And it can be more than know-how. A job might require a high level of physical fitness because of the danger involved. AP

BISMARCK — The number of oil drilling rigs at work in North Dakota is leveling off, and a state regulator says that’s a good thing.

State Department of Mineral Resources director Lynn Helms says the number of rigs working in western North Dakota has ranged between 205 to 215 during April, May and June.

It appears the rig count has leveled off in the low 200s.

The number seems OK, because the pause will allow infrastructure and various other services to catch up. North Dakota’s oil boom has put a lot of strain on local road and bridge networks.

Oil production is still rising. Companies produced an average of almost 640,000 barrels a day in May, and there are close to 7,000 producing wells. AP

Smart Sand and Canadian Pacific Railway Limited today announced a strategic long-term partnership under which the two companies will supply and ship premium, Northern White frac sand to the unconventional oil and gas industry in key North America producing regions (including the Bakken and Eagle Ford formations, and the Utica and Marcellus Shales). The two companies also announced the partnership’s first initiative: building a new frac sand transload facility, expected to be the region’s largest, in Makoti, North Dakota that will serve the Bakken formation in the Williston Basin beginning in early 2013.

Smart Sand’s primary facility, which opened in late June 2012 and is located on the CP rail line in Oakdale, Wisconsin, will supply premium Northern White frac sand in a broad range of mesh sizes to the new transload facility. Based on Smart Sand’s initial processing capacity of more than one million tons per year, plus the company’s extensive proven reserves, the facility will be able to quickly fulfill long- and short-term orders while providing direct rail access for unit trains.

Canadian Pacific is the only North American railroad to serve the Bakken

Formation, the Alberta Industrial Heartland and the Marcellus Shale. In addition, CP is the only Class I railway to connect the energy hubs of the U.S.

Midwest, Alberta and Saskatchewan to the Northeast U.S. Through its network to the Northeast U.S. and through the Kansas City gateway to the U.S. Gulf Coast, CP is able to partner with the energy industry to facilitate growth in moving oil and energy-related materials. Each year, CP moves hundreds of thousands of carloads of energy-related products, including crude oil, sulphur, fuels, diluents and materials key to the energy industry, such as pipe and frac sand. Unscramble the first four words in each set of s c r a m b l e s . Then use the circled letters to unscramble the final word. Some of the words may unscramble into more that one word, but only one word is related to the puzzle.

But how do I do it?

The object is to insert the numbers in the boxes to satisfy only one condition: each row, column and 3x3 box must contain the digits 1 through 9 exactly once. What could be simpler?

Occupational Medicine: What Is It?If you ever needed a drug test or a physical prior to being hired by a company, if you needed a consultation with a doctor to qualify for a discount on your employee medical insurance, or if you were ever injured on the job, you were operating in the realm of Occupational Medicine.

Contrary to some opinion, Occupational Medicine is more than pre-employment physicals and treating injured workers. In addition, Occupational Medicine focuses on employee safety, education and injury prevention, as well as oversight of work injury rehabilitation and safe, prompt return to full employment.

In order to properly distinguish workplace from non-workplace injury, the Occupational Medicine physician must have a thorough understanding of the patient’s medical history, as well as their job duties and work environment as well as North Dakota’s Workers Compensation Regulatory requirements.

The practice of Occupational Medicine requires experience in a wide range of medical disciplines, including Orthopedics, Environmental Medicine, Radiology, Family Practice and Ophthalmology to name a few.

When a workplace injury does occur, the Occupational Medicine physician acts as an advocate for the injured worker and in addition to injury treatment, serves as the communication link with the employer and the state regulatory agency. In North Dakota, Workforce Safety and Insurance (WSI) is the state’s sole regulatory and funding agent. All North Dakota Workers Compensation claims are administered through WSI.

Many local companies believe that their injured workers must be seen in an emergency room in order to file a claim for Workers Compensation. This is not the case. Most workplace injury and rehabilitation can be safely treated on an outpatient basis.

Fairlight Medical Center, located in the Plainsman Building in downtown Williston, has the area’s only medical doctor with a full-

time focus on Occupational Medicine. Dr. H i g h t o w e r o b t a i n e d his medical degree from The George Washington University in Washington, DC. He was awarded a fellowship to the National Institutes of Health during his senior year of medical school. Dr. Hightower has had 20 years of experience in Occupational Medicine, and for 5 years was on staff with the team physicians for the San Diego Chargers. He was also a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy, including a tour of duty in the Middle East during Operation Desert Storm. Dr. Hightower has relocated to Williston from Bakersfield, CA, and hopes to make Williston his home for years to come.

Fairlight Medical Center’s goal is to be a full service location for all your Occupational Health needs, including:

• Comprehensive outpatient work injury care, including full-service onsite Radiological services• Pre-employment physicals• Fit for Duty & Return to Work physicals• DOT and Non-DOT physicals• Employee annual wellness exams• Vision testing• Audiometry (hearing) testing• Spirometry and Mask Fit testing• Pre-and post-injury drug testing through their affiliate, Secure Screen• Safe work environment and employee education services• Medical Review Officer (MRO) services• Williston’s only Walk-in Clinic for non work-related health needs.

We look forward to serving all your Occupational Health needs.

A good deck system can offer many benefits to a homeowner. Decks provide a place for fall cookouts, neighborhood parties, family get-togethers and countless other outdoor activities. A deck will not only provide years of

wonderful outdoor living, it also adds intrinsic value to a home.

Adding a good railing system to a deck can add a variety of positive aspects for homeowners. The style, color and placement of a railing system can make an outdoor living space look sophisticated and stylish.

Whether a railing is designed for personal pleasure, to meet a building code before selling or renting, to increase the value of a home, or an old outdated railing needs to be replaced, the do-it-yourself method can be the best route for your stress level and your wallet.

The first thing to consider before you purchase materials for a do-it-yourself railing project is the style and color. If the idea of staining and painting a

railing is not appealing, a wooden railing may not be the best option.

Composite railings are gaining popularity for all different styles of homes. When installed, composite railing offers similar

support and safety to a wooden railing and is low maintenance because of the exterior of the product.

Some composite railings systems are designed for do-it-yourself projects, and are offered in a variety of colors so that color coordinating with a home’s exterior is easy. Certain lengths of composite railings also offer support and strength without the requirement of

metal reinforcements for an easier and hassle free install.

To ensure that the aesthetic beauty of a deck will be enhanced by a railing and post mount system, consider using a brand that comes complete with options like hidden fasteners, a variety of lengths, fixed-angle bracket adapters and stair kits. Different options will help ensure that your deck is unified and appealing to the eye. ARA

Before there was the fish stick, there was the fish brick. Looking for ways to make its products more appealing to

housewives in the late 1940s, the U.S. fishing industry briefly flirted with a novel idea: packaging fish similar to ice cream—in big, rectangular containers. Fish were cleaned and filleted at sea, layered into

stacks, and compressed into frozen bricks. The homemaker could cut the fish into any shape and be confident that the shape will be retained even after cooking.

Fish bricks didn’t fly off supermarket shelves. Sometime after this misadventure, however, the fishing industry settled on the idea of single-serving, breaded fish sticks. Since the mid-1950s, the easy-to-serve, portion-controlled items have regularly found their way onto U.S. dinner tables and into school lunches. The past decade, however, has given fishermen and scientists a preview of the challenges they may face in keeping fish sticks on the menu as the planet gets warmer.

Today, the primary fish-stick fish is Alaska pollock. With an annual harvest that fluctuates around a million tons, Alaska pollock is the United States’ largest fishery.

Keeping up with changes in climate is today’s challenge. Warmer water temperatures reduce availability of the pollock’s preferred food, while increasing the populations of its predators.

Each summer and autumn, young pollock have to load up on zooplankton. Zooplankton abundance, corresponds with sea ice extent. Every year, sea ice waxes and wanes over the Northern Hemisphere, growing through the winter and melting through the summer.

There is a correlation between the persistence of sea ice through the spring, the presence of zooplankton the following summer, and the health of young pollock. Warmer conditions, with less ice, are less favorable for large zooplankton, and therefore less favorable for Alaska pollock.

Warmer conditions could force fishery managers to lower Alaska pollock quotas over the long term, so fish sticks at least as we know them today might become less economical. The demise of pollock would affect more than just the fish stick market; pollock is a staple food for multiple species of marine mammals and birds. Alaska’s waters supply up to about 50 percent of the domestically produced seafood for the nation. Changing climate would affect not just pollock, but other commercial fisheries such as crab and salmon.

River Cruise: Travelers to More Intimate DestinationsThere’s a movement among today’s travelers. They are no longer satisfied with seeing the standard sights in the standard way; these travelers are a part of that movement which seeks richer knowledge, new perspectives and one-of-a-kind experiences. Travelers who identify with this type of movement are finding that river cruises are one of the best ways to see the world.

River cruises allow travelers to see the most notable sights in their chosen destination, but they also offer the opportunity to experience daily life in places where tourism is secondary to authentic culture. Award-winning tour operator Tauck, a leader in European river cruising, takes travelers around the world with carefully planned itineraries that make it easier to see some of Europe’s hottest destinations in-depth, at costs savings often up to 40 percent over independent planning.

• Western Europe - The classic destinations of the Old World get a new coat of polish when viewed from river cruises. Explore the romantic landscape and medieval castles of Germany’s Rhine and Moselle rivers, or be charmed by the countryside in Belgium and the Netherlands.

• Eastern Europe - A river voyage from the Black Sea to Budapest will have

travelers sailing through beautiful scenery as well as dramatic history. Many of the destinations on the journey, like towns

and cities in Bulgaria and Romania, are hidden gems that only in-the-know travelers count among the must-see destinations in Europe.

• The Middle East - What river could be more considered famous than the Nile? Taking a cruise on this legendary waterway counts among life’s ultimate experiences. The austere allure of the desert landscape is an attraction in its own right, but travelers will also be able to see the ancient monuments that have made Egypt a travel destination for generations of adventurous spirits.

• Asia - China’s powerful Yangtze is one of the world’s great rivers, and cruising down it will be the travel experience of

a lifetime. Another river, the Li, is the perfect place to observe fishermen onboard bamboo rafts - an unforgettable glimpse into the old-world cultural heart of China.

Spin the globe and pick a destination - no matter the destination, river cruises offer travelers the chance to see the world from a different point of view.

and women’s basketball teams opened up with easy wins over inferior competition, some other Americans struggled to live up to the hype.

Jordyn Wieber Fails to Qualify For Women’s All-Around: The defending world champion and favorite heading into the London Games won’t even compete in the women’s gymnastics all-around competition this summer after failing to qualify ahead of U.S. teammates Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman. Only two competitors from each team can qualify, so Jordyn Wieber was left out on Sunday.

Wieber had been crowned by many before the Games even began, and that pressure likely caused her downfall in the individual competition. The 17-year-old can still win team gold with the United States, but her dreams of individual greatness and Olympic gold are dashed. Douglas won at the US trials earlier this summer, but Raisman was the surprise qualifier for the Americans. Wieber will have to wait another four years for another shot at all-around gold.

U.S. Men Miss Out on Gold in Team Relay: Despite building a sizable lead through the first three legs of the 4x100 freestyle relay on Monday, Team USA, anchored by Ryan Lochte, came up short of gold in the event, finishing right behind France, who avenged their silver medal finish to the US from 2008 in Beijing. The

French team finished Monday’s race in a time of 3 minutes, 9.93 seconds, while the U.S. was close behind, finishing in 3:10.38. The second-place finish clearly has to fall on the shoulders of one of the world’s best, Ryan Lochte. His teammates, Michael Phelps, Cullen Jones and Nathan Adrian all worked hard to give him some breathing room heading into the final 100 meters, but he tightened up late and deserves the blame for the shocking result.

Dana Vollmer Sets World Record: American female swimmer Dana Vollmer set a new world record in the women’s 100-meter butterfly, touching the wall and winning gold in a time of 55.98. The previous world best had been 56.06, set by Swedish swimmer Sarah Sjostrom. Vollmer’s performance provided a bright spot for U.S. swimming on an opening weekend that featured a fair share of heartbreak for the Americans.

Vollmer came into the London Games with high expectations in the event and she didn’t disappoint. A gold medal would have been good enough, but setting a world record in the process makes her one of the top female Olympic performers in the history of the Games. Despite failing to make the team in 2008, Vollmer has worked hard and prepared herself to compete at the sport’s highest level. Her dedication and resiliency were on display this weekend, and now she’s an Olympic champion and a world-record holder.

This Week in HistoryOn August 6 in 1945, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the world’s first atom bomb, over the city of Hiroshima. Approximately 80,000 people are killed as a direct result of the blast, and another 35,000 are injured. At least another 60,000 would be dead by the end of the year from the effects of the fallout. There were 90,000 buildings in Hiroshima before the bomb was dropped; only 28,000 remained after the bombing. Of the city’s 200 doctors; only 20 were left alive or capable of working. There were so many spontaneous fires set as a result of the bomb that a crewman of the Enola Gay stopped trying to count them. Another crewman remarked, “It’s pretty terrific. What a relief it worked.”

ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20)You might need an adventure or a chance to range far and wide on Monday. Find at least one thing to do that thrills you - you need to escape the usual routine. Tuesday is excellent for talking business. You could do well. The midweek Full Moon is perfect for parties and get-togethers. You can make some great connections that will be worth keeping. If you’ve been holding anything back, this is when they could come out. Don’t embarrass yourself. Thursday looks lucky and promising. Make the most of it.PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20)Your lifestyle zone is in focus, so you might be eager to work out, improve your health routine, or be more motivated in general. R. Rooster BBQ Co Celebrates First Anniversary

In 2007 the MacSteves family arrived in Williston, so Maeve could accept a teaching position at Williston State College. When the grant that funded the program was not renewed, Maeve chose to put her teaching to the ultimate test. Maeve asked herself “can a Entrepreneurship Instructor actually start and run a successful business”? The answer is obviously yes, but she credits the help from her friends and family as key components.

Maeve worked for a year on the concept and getting the restaurant opened. R. Rooster BBQ Co opened its doors on Memorial Day Weekend 2011. Maeve and her family purchased and remodeled the former drive-in liquor store located just off Main Street on Second Street West. Maeve teamed up with Entrepreneur and restaurateur “Dr. Mike” L’Amour together creating R. Rooster BBQ Co.

Maeve is now happy to announce that they are expanding their restaurant to add more seating. For all those who have already had the opportunity to eat at the Rooster know that the setting is nice, food is good and prices and fair. I for one look forward to watching this business grow over the years to come. I strongly recommend checking it out.

R. Rooster is located at 14 Second Street West in downtown Williston. They can be reached at 701 577 7BBQ. They are opened 7 days a week from 11 am-9 pm (Sundays- 12pm-6pm). You can also visit their website at www.letseat.at/rroosterbbqco or on facebook at www.facebook.com/pages/R-Rooster-BBQ

Ernie Hartline and Janet Wilson work a recent busy lunch shift at R.Rooster BBQ Co. in Williston, N.D. Wilson moved from Louisiana and Hartline from Tennessee.
