Boom Town Law MakingOver a hundred years ago Silver was found in the hills of Tombstone, Arizona. Tens of thousands of people followed the news looking for wealth and opportunity.

The people of Tombstone had lawmakers like Wyatt Earp to roam the streets and make sure things were done right. Well, the people of Williston have their City Commission to do so.

And the Chamber of Commerce has asked the City Commission to clean up Main Street. Now this isn’t much of any news for those living here in the city. We can probably all agree that Main Street is not the place for temporary housing, but the question still exists: Where do we put all the workers. It is obvious that without the workers the boom would be eliminated.

Everyone knows that there is not enough permanent housing in the area. I toured a house not far from Main Street yesterday that had over 17 sleeping rooms in it and only 4 bathrooms and a small kitchen.

The problem is here, and the problem is real.

Houses and apartments are being built in every direction you look. I am confident that some day, Williston will have too

many homes. But for now we have to figure out where everyone will stay.

Please log on to our Facebook Page and tell us how you think the City of Williston should fix the problem.

Sam’s ShoesOwner- Sam Kitzenberg

Years ago people in North Western North Dakota bought their shows from Leeland Kitzenberg Jr. at H&H Shoes of Williston. For nearly 10 years Leeland’s Son Sam worked for him in the store. H&H is gone now and many people buy their shoes from national franchises or Wal-Mart. But Sam has come back to the family business to show people that there is a better way.

Sam has invested his time and money to open up Sam’s Shoes in the Hendricks building in down town Williston. After years of teaching in the public school system, Sam has decided to rebuild the family business and provide comfortable quality shoes to the area.

Sam said that his largest obstacle in opening the new store was the availability of affordable retail space. He said he looked at several locations but most landlords were asking much more than was feasible for his start up business. He said that all changed when he met Loye Ashton (DDS) who worked with him and ended up providing a beautiful space for his new store. For those of you, who have not met Mr. Ashton he has been a great attribute to downtown Williston.

Sam is working with American Made shoe manufacturers to provide a full line up of women’s and men’s shoes. Sam says he will be focusing on quality and comfort, while trying to keep most of his shoes with American Companies. While at the store, Sam explained that he was waiting for a new shipment of SAS shoes, San Antonio Shoes is an American Made Shoe Company dedicated to manufacturing quality and comfortable shoes. Sam was very excited about the new line of shoes, what happens to be the brand that he brought to Williston over 20 years ago when he worked for his dad.

Gathering with family and friends in the summer helps to create enjoyable memories of afternoons and evenings spent with delicious grilled foods, fun games and good socializing.

Organizing these gatherings isn’t difficult, and with a little practice, you’ll be known by your family, friends and neighbors as an expert, both in organizing an excellent outdoor gathering, and in your grilling techniques.

Summer barbecues should be fun, flavorful and carefree. And, it all starts with a flavorful menu. It is the perfect time of year to experiment with flavor combinations when planning your menu. From seasonal fruits and vegetables to marinades and sauces, there are many different ways to combine flavors that best represent the mood or theme of your celebration.

• Prepare your food perfectly. Marinate your meat in freezer bags overnight or several hours before you cook to lock

in the delicious flavors you’re going to be serving.

• Games are also very important, and have a variety on hand for kids and adults alike. Your local dollar store offers a fun selection of prizes and activities for everyone, in every age group - without breaking your barbecue budget. Create your own kickball field,

or establish a smaller bean bag toss game to encourage a little friendly competition. Another activity perfect for kids is sidewalk art.

• When grilling, turn meat only once. For steaks, turn the meat when the juices start to bubble on the top. The clearer the juice, the more well-done the meat.

• Apply sauces containing honey, brown sugar or molasses during the last 10 minutes of grilling to prevent the sauces from burning.

• Keep a spray bottle handy so you can calm down grill flare-ups, which could blacken the food.

• Clean up throughout the gathering, both to make the process easier when everyone’s ready to go home after dark, and also to help keep the insects away.

Chamber Appoints New Executive Director

Celebrity Best/Worst Tippers

It’s not easy to say goodbye, especially to the hometown that has given me so much over the years.

I’ve served as the vice president of communications at the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce for the past five years. Next month, I am headed north – far north – to become the executive director of the Williston Area Chamber of Commerce in Williston, ND.

You may have heard of it recently in the national news. Williston sits atop the Bakken formation which covers about 200,000 square miles in Montana, North Dakota and Saskatchewan. Oil was discovered in the Bakken half a century ago.

Last year, production numbers rose to 152 million barrels with 80 %coming from the Bakken. Less than a week ago, North Dakota surpassed Alaska,

becoming the No. 2 state in the nation for oil production. A mere six years ago, North Dakota was No. 9.

A modern day “black gold” rush has ensued and the communities of western North Dakota are grappling with the very real challenges that have come with this time of great opportunity.

Reminds me a little of the exponential growth of a small town where I grew up on the west coast of Florida - although transplants there came not for black gold, but golden sunshine.

Local leaders are now estimating that the population has surpassed 17,000 with no end in sight. Housing is at an all-time premium, infrastructure is stretched to the limit and newcomers continue to arrive daily.

What struck me most upon my visits to Williston were the people. Certainly emotions are high as locals see their hometown forever changing and the stress that comes from growth that is just happening too fast. Yet, the locals and their leaders seem set on one very clear goal: weathering the growth and growing responsibly together.

Best Tipper : Barack Obama - While running for office, Barack Obama left a 900 percent tip while grabbing a beer at Raleigh Times Bar in Raleigh, North Carolina. According to TMZ, he paid for a $2 beer with a twenty, and told the bartender to keep what was left over. That’s change we can believe in.

Worst Tipper: Dan Marino – Wouldn’t talk to the server directly, he had to have a member of his entourage handle it. He tipped $10 on $210. Pretty bad Dan.

Marci Seamples, has been named the new Williston Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.

ND Now Number 2 Oil State

6

It probably had to happen someday. The oil boom in North Dakota has made it the nation’s No. 2 oil producing state, edging past Alaska in March.

This comes just four months after North Dakota surpassed California in oil output - a dramatic testament to drilling techniques that are extracting ever more crude from previously inaccessible shale layers.

The state of North Dakota released data Monday showing that in March 6,603 wells in the state produced 17.8 million barrels of oil, or 575,490 barrels per day. That’s just ahead of Alaska’s 17.6 million barrels, according to that state’s monthly production data.

Texas, whose output was 49 million barrels or 1.7 million barrels per day in February, still reigns as No. 1 and likely will stay in that spot because it’s also witnessing a shale-oil boom.

North Dakota has rapidly increased output in the Bakken shale and Three Forks formations in the western part of the state. Horizontal drilling methods adapted to oil exploration have produced a fivefold increase in production in just five years.

The ultimate output of North Dakota’s oil patch has been variously estimated at 800,000 barrels per day to more than 1 million barrels per day. With more than 200 drilling rigs working in the region, the output is steadily rising.

The feeling is the boom is halfway up the curve and some think maybe two-thirds of the way. Just over the past year, it has increased 46 percent.

Over the next 15 years, there could be 20,000 to 30,000 oil wells in the area.

North Dakota and Alaska each supply about 9 percent of the nation’s oil needs. Natural gas also is produced in North Dakota, although about a third of it is being flared because of limited pipeline capability.

Infrastructure Growth Across BakkenFive years into the Williston Basin’s historic oil boom, operators and municipalities find themselves wrestling with infrastructure challenges many regions would love to face: crude oil transportation constraints brought on by surging production, and maxed-out municipal services in a rural region with a rapidly expanding population that is bursting at the seams.

Across North Dakota, demand is off the charts for everything from drilling rigs and pumping units to housing and office space, driven by a blistering pace of activity in the Bakken. The number of producing Bakken/Three Forks wells in North Dakota has expanded by more than 700 percent over the past four years, and daily oil production skyrocketed from 36,000 barrels in 2008 to 481,000 barrels in January 2012.

With that kind of meteoric growth, one of the most obvious and pressing needs

is transportation capacity to ship the produced oil to market. To meet the need, major investments are being made in pipeline systems that could double North Dakota’s daily export capacity over the next five years, as well as in a rapidly expanding rail transport system that is expected to have a capacity of 750,000 barrels a day this year, according to the North Dakota Pipeline Authority.

Many projections vary at this point, but the total Williston Basin oil output is expected to double again over the next eight years and could eclipse 1.3 million barrels a day by 2025. While rig counts jump to record levels in the Williston Basin and operators await additional pipeline, rail and processing infrastructure to reduce oil and gas transportation bottlenecks, municipalities are transitioning from temporary to permanent housing, and are scrambling to install public infrastructure capable of accommodating a booming oil town population.

Land Owners Prove To Be Good StewardsThe countryside around Williston continues to change. Property that once featured an RV Park, family horseback rides and “buried treasure” will now house apartment buildings, restaurants, hotels and retail space.

Kathleen Hagan recently parted with land that will house the future Sand Creek Town Centre. Terry Metzler, North Dakota Operations Manager for Granite Peak Development, praised the Hagan family for their contribution to the project. Kathleen, who has lived in Williston since 1947, said she was excited to be a part of the change in Williston.

The new development plans to house several big box stores, restaurants, a 12-plex theater, hotels and individual stores. The quality of life is going to be enhanced with a movie theater, restaurants and much more.

Further west of the Sand Creek Town Centre development sits the former Prairie Acres RV Park. The property housed 35 RV sites as well as a home, hayfield and shooting range. Orville and Jenelle Loomer

said they never planned on selling their RV Park and leaving Williston. As the city moved further and further west, the writing was on the wall.

The Loomers ultimately sold their acreage to a housing developer. North by Northwest Development broke ground recently on Chandler Field. The 100-acre project will house 1,344 multifamily units as well as 223,400 square feet of retail space and a 157-room hotel.

Cows on the loose in Boxford, Mass., crashed a backyard party last weekend. Reports of screams from a group of women as five or six cows stumbled into the yard, eagerly hurtling toward the beers. They stepped back and the cows took over the table, knocking over the beers with their noses, drinking the beer off the table. A police escort rounded up the cows and returned them to a farm about a mile away.

Carissa Gormally will vie for a coveted spot on the USA Olympic Swimming Team June 25-July 2, 2012. A Sendoff Party was held recently in Williston to wish her good luck.

Auction house Christie’s is in the pink for its spring jewelry sale in Hong Kong. The coveted prize of the day is the Martian Pink - a 12 carat fancy intense pink diamond, the biggest of its kind ever to appear at auction. After an intense bidding session, the gem sold to an anonymous bidder for 17.3 million US dollars - which is roughly 1.5 million dollars per carat, shattering its pre-sale estimate.

It’s very difficult to have round colored diamonds that actually show their color with this intensity. But to have a round diamond, the most classic cut of them all, with 57 facets and this kind of color intensity, is very rare. There are only two large round pink diamonds in the world

with one being the Martian Pink. The other, the “Williamson Pink” is owned by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth.

These oil stocks are ready to skyrocket while this oil “revolution” takes over:

Halliburton Co. (NYSE: HAL) On April 18 the company reported that first-quarter income jumped to $627 million, or 68 cents a share. That’s a 23% increase from $511 million, or 56 cents a share for the same period a year ago. The company scored record North American revenue of $4.2 billion as new drilling activity helped balance the slide in natural gas drilling, as natural gas prices are decade-low levels.

Wall Street has a one-year price target of $47.28, a 50% premium to Thursday’s closing price of $31.41.

C&J Energy Services (NYSE: CJES) C&J is the leading independent oil services firm in Eagle Ford, which has recoverable reserves estimated as high as 7-10 billion barrels.

From a valuation standpoint, CJES shares look especially attractive with a price to earnings ratio of 5.29. Wall Street’s one-year price target is $28.83, a 57% hike from Thursday’s $18.35 closing price.

NuStar Energy (NYSE: NS): Cash flow is strong and revenue growth in the most recent quarter was up 40.6% year over year. CEO Curt Anastasio said the company is evaluating a number of Eagle Ford projects that could double its earnings over the next few years.

NuStar’s P/E of 19.5 is lower than the industry average of 21.7. Though shares are down 6.6% so far this year to $52.48, the one-year average price target is $58.50, about 11% higher. But perhaps the best reason to look at NuStar - a master limited partnership (MLP) - is the dividend. It pays $4.38 for a yield of 8.3%.

Elvis Presley’s Grave Up for AuctionElvis Presley fans can lay their love for the music icon to rest - literally - by purchasing the crypt where Elvis’ body was originally buried before his remains were moved to the Graceland estate.

The highest bidder will own the rights to be buried in the original resting place of The King himself.

Presley and his mother Gladys were buried in a mausoleum in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis, Tenn. for two months after Elvis’ death in 1977. The bodies were then moved to Graceland, freeing up the space for a fan willing to lay down major cash to lay to rest in Elvis’ original grave.

The sale, held by Julien’s Auctions, will take place on June 23-24 as part of the annual Music Icons auction. But be prepared to dig deep in your wallet — the starting price is $100,000 and Darren Julien, the president and CEO of the company, says there has been a lot of buzz about the sale.

“This is a highly sought after item,” Julien said. “We’re getting interest from all over the world.” Buying the rights to be buried in your favorite musician’s grave may seem a little out

there to some, but Julien says it’s a way to be a part of pop culture history.

“When you’re an avid fan of somebody, it’s a little different than most things, like something he wore on stage, it’s more of an investment,” he said. “But it’s all a way to be a part of pop culture history. Fans, especially Elvis fans, want everything that has to do with him.”

Julien said he was contacted by the cemetery to auction off the rights to the grave on their behalf.

Where It All Comes Together

A Des Moines man was arrested Friday after he reportedly robbed a Des Moines store, ran off and then tried to flush the money down a toilet at a fast-food restaurant, according to police. Officials allege that Daron Thomas, 24, waited in line at Check Into Cash, and when it was his turn demanded money. Employees gave him money, but Thomas jumped over the counter to retrieve more. Thomas left the store, but witnesses gave a description. An officer later spotted Thomas, who took off running and went into a KFC. Thomas allegedly went into the bathroom and began flushing the money down the toilet.

New Publication for WillistonNearly two years ago I came to the Williston area to verify the rumors that I heard of the economic explosion. I soon joined with a business partner to start looking at the possibility of a catering company here in the Williston Area. We did the paperwork, deposited the money and we were off.

After several months of operations, I noticed that the local publications left me wanting more or less as it may be. I wanted a publication that focused on the important happenings without long opinionated stories and advertising that was clean, clear and easy to follow. I talked to a few of the local publications and didn’t see any changes.

So I returned to my hometown and partners up with some experienced publishers and am now proud to produce the Williston Trader. Although this third edition is work in progress, I believe you will see a great step forward and I am

happy to see what is coming up the road for the Williston Trader. I encourage you to email me with any questions, comments, concerns, or desires with the paper at [email protected]. I also encourage you to join us on Facebook.

Unscramble the first four words in each set of scrambles. Then use the circled letters to unscramble the final word. Some of the words may unscramble into more that one word, but only one word is related to the puzzle.

WordScramble

But how do I do it?

The object is to insert the numbers in the boxes to satisfy only one condition: each row, column and 3x3 box must contain the digits 1 through 9 exactly once. What could be simpler?

Weekly HoroscopeARIES (Mar. 21- April 20)

You get more chances to improve your financial situation, so make the most of a special aspect be-tween Mercury and Jupiter on Monday. Meanwhile, the recent Solar Eclipse may have interest-ing news for you. If you haven’t had it yet, you may get it once Mercury moves into Gemini on Thursday. Don’t rush to resolve issues that may have arisen re-cently - all will soon become clear. Wednesday and Friday are great for brainstorming, but not so hot for business deals. Inspi-ration flows on Sunday.

TAURUS (Apr. 21- may 21)

Your brightest and most practical

ideas seem to take shape on Mon-

day. Share them, do research, or

talk to key people for best results.

There is a gradual shift of focus to

finances and financial issues. You’ll

be inspired to look for bargains and

be a lot savvier about the way you

do business. Be careful on Friday,

as you could make a mistake by act-

ing without thinking. The weekend

is fun, but you may be inclined to

make a few impulse buys.

GEMINI (May 22-June 21)

After the recent Solar Eclipse in

your sign, you may be reeling from

some of the changes. They might en-

courage you to follow your passion

and so put you on the path to suc-

cess. Mercury moves into Gemini

on Thursday, so you’ll be truly in

your element. It’s time to get up to

speed, especially if delays and chal-

lenges have held you back lately.

You’re now back on track and ready

to talk your way to success.

CANCER (June 22-July 22)

The Sun has recently moved into

your spiritual zone, and Mercury

moves in later in the week. You’re

more connected to your inner world

and so may feel more vulnerable

than usual. Don’t overcrowd your

schedule, but make time to reflect

on the past year and what you could

have done better, and think about

what you’d like to achieve in the fu-

ture. Get in touch with your passion.

Keep networking, as Jupiter brings

lucky opportunities.

LEO (July 23-Aug 22)

There is quite a buzz building up in

your social life. There may be a few

changes to contend with after the re-

cent Solar Eclipse. You might join a

new group or find a friend you really

get along with. There’s plenty of op-

portunity for flirting and romance,

too. The weekend may bring news

that encourages you to think of tak-

ing a vacation or perhaps visiting

someone in another country. You

still have plenty of opportunities to

make progress in your career.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23)

If you’ve been updating your skill

set, you now get a chance to put

it all into action in the workplace.

The focus shifts to your career

goals, so whether you’re looking

for a job or want a promotion or

better deal all round, you’ll be

eager to research your options

and impress the right people. You

know how to steer interviews or

conversations around to your way

of thinking. It all adds up to great-

er confidence and more success.

LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23)

Monday’s conjunction between

Mercury and Jupiter may be the

perfect influence you need to talk

to your bank manager about a loan

or a line of credit. Jupiter will give

you a helping hand in this area for

a little while longer, so make use of

it if you haven’t already. The focus

then shifts and encourages you to

get out of your comfort zone and

explore new horizons. Travel may

be in the cards, as is the possibility

of romance.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22)

The focus shifts to financial issues,

particularly loans, taxes, mortgages,

and your partner’s finances. You

may want to re-organize your debts

or any other aspect of your finances

that would benefit. Be careful on

Wednesday and Friday, when there

are aspects to Neptune. Don’t spend

money on impulse because you may

well lose out. Romance is highlight-

ed, too, and adds extra spice to your

current relationship. This is a good

time for counseling or therapy, if

you need it.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21)

Monday brings opportunities on the

work front, which may mean good

news on some level. Later the focus

shifts to relationships, especially as

Mercury joins Venus and the Sun in

Gemini. There is warmth and good

feeling, which can help soothe away

troubles and bring peace as long as

you don’t say the wrong thing. Even

if you do, these aspects help you

discuss core issues and come out on

top. It’s full steam ahead with your

career, too. Things are looking up

CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20)

You still have opportunities for ro-

mance, creative projects, and re-

laxed fun. An idea on Monday may

spur you to action, and could be very

productive, too. The focus gradually

shifts to work, lifestyle, and health

issues, especially once curious Mer-

cury moves into Gemini on Thurs-

day. You may be eager to revise your

habits and see which work for you

and which don’t. This is a good time

to study anything you need to know

about health, work-related issues, and

how to function efficiently in life.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19)

Jupiter continues to bring luck to

your home zone, but it won’t be there

for too much longer. If you want to

get started on any home-based proj-

ects, get a mortgage, buy, or sell, go

for it now and tap into your good

fortune. The focus has shifted to

your fun, leisure, and romance zone.

You may want to get out more with

the purpose of enjoying life. Get in-

volved with activities that bring joy

to your heart. Let your inner child

out to play!

PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20)

You may have made great strides

recently by taking your success seri-

ously and making a point of promot-

ing yourself. This has boosted your

confidence and may have brought

extra business your way, as well as

connected you to new friends and

interests. There’s a shift to home and

family matters, with plenty of op-

portunities to entertain, bring family

members together, or use your home

as a meeting place for activities that

interest you. You may be thinking of

starting a home-based business, too.

Spotlight Business - Bakken StaffingBakken Staffing

Lori Schwan - ManagerJohn Voll - Business Development

We Have Workers! Not to many people can say it but Bakken Staffing can not only say it they can announce it to the world. Bakken Staffing located across from the Train Station on 1st Ave East in Williston, is geared up and ready to help Bakken Employees and Employers with the “Match Making Services”.

Bakken Staffing has developed a network of recruiting that allows them to access employees in over 55 markets nationwide. They are capable of providing nearly all HR functions for your company, from

recruiting, drug testing, pre-screening, temporary staffing, temp to hire, or handling your employee housing solutions.

Some of the more interesting things I learned when speaking with Bakken Staffing was concerning their compassion for helping employees. As we know many people come to the area with no money, no plan, and no housing. John and Lori help these people by providing temporary jobs and permanent job placement. One of their programs even allows their temporary employees to get paid each day.

For an inexpensive fee employers can work with Bakken Staffing for nearly all their Human Resource needs. It was obvious to me that this was not the type of company here to make a fast buck and just place employees anywhere. There was a since of pride in the office and an obvious dedication to customer service.
