Record Turn Out For Williston VotersExtremely long lines did not deter the civic-minded residents from voting Tuesday, and the result was the highest voter turnout in Williston’s history.

A total of 9,750 ballots were counted in Williams County, compared to 9,503 in 2008.

Nearly two-thirds of those ballots were cast in early voting or by absentee ballot, with just over 3,500 residents voting at the Raymond Family Community Center on Election Day.

While the number of voters was up slightly, the time required to vote was s i g n i f i c a n t l y increased. Some voters found the lines prohibitive as they took time from their busy schedules to stand in lines that werereportedly as much as two hours long.

Potential Williston voter Karen Toavs, who tried twice to vote while juggling teaching Language Arts at Williston Middle School and parent-teacher conferences, left frustrated and without casting her ballot after waiting an hour at two separate occasions.

“I came at eight this morning and couldn’t get in. I’ve got parents coming in 12 minutes, I have to go,” Toavs said Tuesday afternoon. “I feel like my vote matters, but I only have one hour to vote.”

Williams County Beth Innis said delays were caused by the large number of new voters and the limited size of the Raymond

Center gymnasium, where voting takes place.

“The reason we quit having more than one polling location was because of the crackdown on security after (September 11, 2001),” Innis added. After that time, schools and libraries were no longer permitted for use as polling places. “The Raymond Center worked well up until Tuesday.”

Innis said the county is already looking at alternative options for the 2014 election. Options being considered for a second

polling place include the New Armory or the new Williston Area Recreation Center.

“If we had more room, we could have had more clerks, which is what caused the bottleneck,” Innis said.

While the lines were an ordeal to some, other voters reported utilizing the time to enjoy the company of members of the community.

“We had a great time in line,” Williston resident Karli Keck said. Keck and her husband brought their four-year-old daughter along to share the voting experience with her.

Headwaters Fiddle Contest ResultsPhil & C’Dale Jore owners and operators of Jore Haus of Musik in Williston announce the results of two of their students in a recent fiddle contest. Jeremy Haagenson,10, son of Tim, Williston, and Kirk Cartwright,14, son of Elorie, Ray, competed on Oct. 13 in the Headwaters Fiddle Contest at Three Forks, Montana. Jeremy, holding his own in the middle of the pack, had a tough class with 17 entries in the Junior Junior Division! Judges loved his “tone quality”. Good job with that “bow”, Jeremy!!! Kirk made it into the finals to play a third round, garnering rave reviews about his intonation and bringing home some earnings! Way to go 4th place Junior!

During a break before the finals Phil on keyboards and Kirk on mandolin jammed with some local talent. What fun and quite an inspiration for our students!

It’s a good time, and a great way to get out there and get moving. Find them on Facebook or call 701-572-4738 for information. This is just the tip of the iceberg, too. North Dakota is a mecca for all things hunting and fishing, and ice fishing season is just around the corner. Our community also offers bowling leagues of every shape and size, as well darts and pool.Theater, music, and artWhether you enjoy watching theater or want to be on stage, Entertainment, Inc! is a great thing to find out about. Visual art, along with monthly performances, put the non-profit high on the list of great little secrets.Looking to belongIf you would classify yourself as a joiner, are you ever in luck. Williston boasts two Lions Clubs, Rotary, Moose Lodge, United Way, Band Boosters, Veterans organizations, and so much more. The Williston Chamber of Commerce is a great resource for learning more about ways to get involved in clubs and activities. Do you ever get the feeling in the middle of your day where all you want to do is punch a wall, throw something out a window or bang your head against your desk? Well, you either have a case of the Mondays, (insert Office Space annoying voice here), or you, like the rest of the world, are simply stressed.

Take it from a full-time c o l l e g e student who is the captain of her dance team, has two jobs, sings in the choir, and seems to be

involved in everything and anything she can get herself into: It’s hard to balance the everyday things, and that’s what stresses us out. And if you’re anything like me, stressing makes me break out, which stresses me out more, which causes me to break out more. It’s just a vicious, inevitable cycle of life.

Whether you’re stressed from school, work, yelling at the kids, or just because the grocery store was out of your favorite popcorn, here are a few tips on how to manage and decrease your stress levels.

First, the trick is not to let the little things upset you. Sometimes you just have to accept the notion that “whatever can go wrong, will go wrong,” and you just have to deal with things as they happen. If you’re stressing out, take ten deep breaths, slowly and controlled. Just close your eyes and focus on your breathing, in and out.

I’m a huge fan of Sticky Notes, and I’ll write down everything I have to do in a day on four or five sticky notes and leave them throughout my room where I know I’ll see them. Writing things down really helps you manage your day. And the best part, as you finish something you can cross

it off the list! It also helps to have a planner or calendar where you can write down all your appointments and assignments. I have three.

Cry. Just have a good cry (preferably in the shower or in your car). Don’t cry at work or in public if at all possible. If you feel like you’re going to have a breakdown at work, rub your thumb along the middle of the palm of your hand, with a good amount of pressure. It stops your tears.

When I’m stressed I tend to rearrange furniture and go on a mad cleaning spree. If you don’t feel the need to arrange things, go on a run, go workout, or do something physical.

Buy a stress ball. I have two of them on my desk, and they are used quite frequently. Just squeeze the crap out of it. You can’t hurt it!

Know that it’s OK to stress. It’s natural. And with the world we live in today, it’s no wonder we’re grumpy half the time. The trick is to know that we don’t have to feel stressed, and to know there are ways to manage it. You can’t get rid of it forever, but you can certainly deal with it. And once you deal with it, it won’t happen quite as often.

We all have those days where, as my voice lesson instructor says, “I can’t find my butt with both hands and a roadmap,” but just hang in there. Stress doesn’t last for long, you just have to manage it. And if you need a roadmap, just let me know.

Questions? Comments? Send your thoughts to [email protected] and I’ll gladly respond to what you have to say! Remember to just relax and breathe! Until next week!Namaste!

We recently had to take our truck in for some body work. We took our truck to Hollen Auto Body. Although Hollen was very busy, I explained to Sheila and Mark, the owners, that I needed to have our truck back in three days. They assured me the work would be done. ( I was a little skeptical ) I took the truck in Monday morning and got a call on Wednesday morning that the truck was done and ready to pick-up. Not only was the truck done in a timely manner, the body and paint work looked perfect. Even though this is an extremely busy business, with a heavy work load, Hollen cares about their customers. They did what they said they were going to do and did a very good job of it. GOOD JOB HOLLEN AUTO BODY. THANKS TO YOU AND ALL OF YOUR EMPLOYEES. We will recommend your work at every opportunity.

Embarrasing Celebrity Breakout Roles

Benico del Toro’s last big role was 2005s smash hit Sin City, but back in 1988, he was just breaking into film with his role in Big Top Pee-Wee. This sequel to Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, is a tad bit softer (and much worse) than the gun-weilding, corrupt cop character of Jack Rafferty that del Toro played a few years ago. It is somehow strangely reminiscent of Del Toro’s role in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, however.

IngredientsTurkey:• 1 (17-pound) whole fresh turkey, rinsed well and patted dry• 1 1/4 stick unsalted butter, slightly softened• 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh sage• 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh rosemary• 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh thyme leaves• 3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh flat leaf parsley• Salt and freshly ground black pepper• 2 large onions, quartered• 3 lg. carrots, cut into 1-inch pieces• 3 lg. stalks celery, cut into 1-inch pieces• 8 cups homemade chicken stock, divided

DirectionsFor the turkey: Remove the turkey from the refrigerator 1 hour before roasting.

Combine the butter, sage, rosemary, thyme, and parsley in a food processor and process until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.

Season the cavity of the turkey with salt and pepper and fill the cavity with half of the carrots, celery, and onion. Rub the entire turkey with herb butter and season liberally with salt and pepper.

Put 4 cups of the chicken stock in a medium saucepan and keep warm over low heat.

Place the remaining vegetables on the bottom of a large roasting pan. Put the turkey on top of the vegetables, put in the oven, and roast in the oven until lightly golden brown, 45 minutes. Reduce the heat to 350 degrees F and continue roasting, basting with the warm chicken stock every 15 minutes, until an instant-read thermometer inserted in the thigh registers 160 degrees F, about 2 to 2 1/4 hours longer. Remove the turkey from the oven, transfer to baking sheet and tent loosely with foil, and let rest 20 minutes before slicing.

The office of Williston Economic Development has announced the Williston City Commission has approved $50,000 in grant funds which are available for Community Enhancement/Marketing projects in the Williston trade region.

“The Community Enhancement/Marketing portion of the STAR Fund is intended to enhance the quality of life in our trade region and to make our communities more enjoyable to live in,” said Williston Mayor Ward Koeser.

“These dollars are for nonprofit organizations in our community that don’t have a lot of resources to tap into,” said STAR Fund Chair Rick Lee.

Up to $50,000 will be available in 2013 to organizations that can provide proof of matching funds. Funds can be used for capital improvements such as land, buildings or equipment, annual or special events and programs and operating expenses.

The STAR Fund is funded by the one-cent

city sales tax. Three-fourths of the penny is dedicated to infrastructure projects in the Williston trade region. One-fourth goes to the STAR Fund for economic and community development projects that will make Williston and the area a better place to live, work and play.

The deadline for applying is Friday, December 14. The STAR Fund Committee

will evaluate the applications and hold interviews in January. The City Commission will act on the grant recipients selected at their meeting in early February.

Organizations and communities interest in applying for funds can access an application online at www.willistonnd.com/usrimages/StarFundApplication.pdf, or pick one up at the Williston Economic Development Office at City Hall (22 East Broadway), or call 701-577-8110.

Members of the STAR Fund Committee are Chair Rick Lee, Vice Chair Aaron Knudsvig, Brad Bekkedahl, Leah Johnson Ellis, Ward Koeser, Rob Osborn, and Laurie Pederson.

Ingredients• 24 ounces reduced sodium chicken broth• 8 ounces red wine• 1/3 cup all-purpose flour• 1 tablespoon fresh herbs: oregano, thyme and rosemary• Kosher salt• Freshly ground black pepperDirectionsRemove the turkey from the roasting pan and set aside to rest. Leave the drippings from the turkey in the pan and place the roasting pan over medium heat. Add the broth and wine at the same time. Whisk to combine, scraping the bottom of the pan until all of the bits have come loose. Cook for another 2 to 3 minutes in order to reduce the mixture slightly. Transfer the liquid to a fat separator and let sit for 5 minutes to allow fat to separate. Return 2/3 to 3/4 cup of the fat to the roasting pan and place over medium-high heat. Discard any remaining fat. Add the flour and whisk to combine. Cook, whisking continuously, until the mixture starts to thicken and become smooth, approximately 2 to 3 minutes. Once this happens, gradually add the liquid back to the pan and whisk until smooth and you have reached your desired consistency, approximately 5 to 6 minutes. Remember, your gravy should be slightly thin in the pan as it will thicken once you serve it. Add the herbs and whisk to combine. Season with salt and pepper.

ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20)A relationship is spotlighted. Although it looks like fun, you might need to give some constructive thought to where it’s headed. Social outings continue to be fun, especially with your social planet Uranus in Aries. You seem to be kick-starting some great events. And with this week’s special influence you may even meet someone new. Something to watch out for is Mercury retrograde as of Tuesday. If you have travel plans, check your tickets, passport, and hotel bookings just in case.TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21)If jealousy is part of the scenario this week, it won’t do you any good to dwell on it. Invite a pal out for lunch and share your secret. You might feel much better as result. Be careful when signing papers. Spontaneous decisions may be the wrong ones, especially if you’re in a hurry to make them. With Mercury retrograde, too, give yourself at least 24 hours before signing anything important, especially if it has to do with your finances.GEMINI (May 22-June 21)Relationships and communications, especially at work, may not be on equal ground. Others may try to drag you into their cynical view, but don’t fall for it. With Saturn on the prowl, you might need to tread a fine line between good stress and stress that is causing ill health. Mercury turns retrograde in your relationship zone on Tuesday. Be extra careful when negotiating or talking about sensitive issues. It could be easy to get the wrong end of the stick.CANCER (June 22-July 22)If invitations aren’t reaching you, get on the phone and put some dates on the calendar. Social trends are active, but the more you give the more you get. With Mercury retrograde in your work zone, it helps to back up your hard drive and be careful with important papers. News on the romance front may not be the best. Spend time with someone you know and trust. Strangely enough, you’ll find comfort in domestic chores and the little things of life.

LEO (July 23-Aug 22)Keeping your spirits high amid possible stress on the home front may have to do with the ongoing support from a friend or partner. Despite being under pressure in terms of family and private issues, you may be determined to have fun as well. Mars in Sagittarius suggests that competitive sport could help you channel excess energy and powerful emotions. Getting involved in amateur dramatics might do the same. The potential for romance looks very hot, but with Mercury retrograde, don’t send mixed signals.VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23)Take care of health issues, and make sure you feed your brain and nervous system. You seem to be involved in a lot of intense mental work that looks set to continue for some time. The right nutrition should help you stay on track. One issue you might be dealing with may concern deception. Someone may be trying to bend the truth. Don’t take things at face value. Life at home seems fun and very entertaining. Relax and recharge your batteries.LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23)Any social plans you make this week may need to be straightened out before you’re ready to go ahead. As Venus aspects Jupiter expect a pleasant surprise that could expand your horizons and give you a lot to be hopeful about. Mercury turns retrograde in your communication zone, so be extra careful when signing important documents or reaching agreements. A domestic situation shows improvement, and supportive friends mean a lot. Whatever you do this week, do it for fun.SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22)Your home life could be frustrating, and your social life certainly could use a kick-start, since it doesn’t seem to offer much escape from your troubles. Despite your best intentions you could end up in a clash with a loved one. Being forthright now may help to tone down your independent streak. Besides all this, there’s a very pleasant influence suggesting that you should pay attention to your intuition. You could increase your income or perhaps get a windfall if you do.

SAGITTARIUS(Nov.23-Dec. 21)This is a good time to exploit your talent for handling money. You have a knack for tapping into it and making use of hidden talents and resources - yours as well as others’. Take a chance. You never know what you might achieve. Mercury turns retrograde in your sign on Tuesday, so don’t always believe everything you say since your perception could be skewed. This influence is excellent for bouncing ideas off a wise friend, and it’s pretty good for writing comedy!CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20)An associate or companion could confront you in a challenging way. This week it might be easier and more advantageous to let someone else take the reins. However, it’s essential that you stay in touch with yourself and not compromise your integrity. Being practical and down to earth should give you a distinct advantage when confronted with confusing situations. It also helps to take a logical approach when creating your daily to-do list. Make time to relax as well. It helps recharge your batteries.AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19)Your determination and perspective regarding your career and major goals are obvious. However, if you try to impose your views on others or encounter others who do the same, you might arouse antagonism. Despite your very full-on approach to success, it helps to keep an open mind regarding differences. Your social life is buzzing, and you may have high hopes of a new romance or special friendship. When you step outside your comfort zone, you can achieve either. Keep your expectations realistic.PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20)Contact with enthusiastic people who share your passions and goals looks possible. If a competitive situation comes up, you can be a winner as long as you’re willing to include others in your success. Watch out for Mercury retrograde as of Tuesday, especially if you have job interviews or important meetings. You might need to be very flexible concerning the results. This Week in HistoryOn November 19, 1863, at the dedication of a military cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln delivers one of the most memorable speeches in American history. In just 272 words, Lincoln brilliantly and movingly reminded a war-weary public why the Union had to fight, and win, the Civil War. The Battle of Gettysburg, fought some four months earlier, was the single bloodiest battle of the Civil War. Over the course of three days, more than 45,000 men were killed, injured, captured or went missing. The battle also proved to be the turning point of the war: General Robert E. Lee’s defeat and retreat from Gettysburg marked the last Confederate invasion of Northern territory and the beginning of the Southern army’s ultimate decline.
