The future site of the new recreation center, 822 18th Street East or on the Northeast corner of Williston State College, doesn’t look like much today.

This week a fence is being put around the area and a ceremony for the ground breaking will happen soon. The building plans include an upper and lower level. The upper level will have a fitness area, locker rooms and a place for group exercise. The lower level will have a community wing with a senior center and three multi-purpose meeting rooms with removable walls to make one larger area.

Between the senior center and meeting rooms will be a connecting kitchen area used for catering or cooking classes. There’s a short-term drop off area by the indoor playground for children while parents workout or participate in a class. There will be birthday party rooms for group events near a leisure pool area which includes an indoor lazy river, two water slides (one tubeless and one for tubes). An instructional pool will be used for swimming lessons as well as a larger pool used for swim meets and competitions.

The recreation center will also have a golf simulator, racket ball areas, a 200 meter track surrounding basketball or gymnasium courts, two permanent batting cages next to a turf field

house that can be used for soccer, volleyball, field hockey and other sports. Last but not least it will also have four indoor tennis courts.

Business Forecast is CloudyThere has been a lot of talk about ‘Cloud Computing’ and its impact on business and IT. The television commercial that gives me a chuckle is the one where the couple is stuck in an airport with nothing to do. So, they remotely connect to their home PC and watch a movie to pass the time. “Yea cloud”! I chuckle because this is such a trivial use of remote access for purely personal reasons.

However, it is easy to see the business benefits of anytime/anywhere computing. What is also funny about this is that this capability has been around for a long time in various forms. Superior Endeavors relies on remote access to manage and support servers and workstations for our clients. This improves our responsiveness to problems and saves our clients money. Beginning in 2003, Microsoft’s Small Business Server has had the ‘Remote Web Workplace’ feature that allows remote workers to control an office PC through their web browser.

So, what is ‘Cloud Computing’ and what is new and improved about it? A check with Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_computing provides a concise definition that highlights the importance of the data network and servers and deemphasizes the importance or power of the client device. For those of us old enough to remember IBM’s System Network Architecture, mainframes, and dumb terminals, the idea of ‘Cloud Computing’ seems almost like déjà vu. So, has the personal computer revolution come full circle and we are right back where we started 30 years ago? The answer to this is contained in the ‘what is new and improved about it’ portion of the lead question earlier.

Today’s ‘Cloud Computing’ relies on the ubiquitous and cost effective availability of reliable and high speed network access using many different types of transport and client devices. This provides for anytime/anywhere/any device access to applications and data that a traditional dumb terminal and mainframe couldn’t provide. The other key difference and improvement is the explosion of application service providers and the wide range of application and data hosting options that are possible. This has provided computing options to businesses that weren’t available previously. In addition, businesses are more comfortable hosting their line of business applications offsite rather than investing in the IT infrastructure and operations to maintain applications and data in-house.

For example, Superior Endeavors is using a ‘Cloud Based’ instance of our ConnectWise business management application. This approach allowed us to quickly and cost effectively implement a complex and game changing application. The phrase ‘business agility’ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_agility) comes to mind when thinking of modern ‘Cloud Computing’.

So, the answer is that the personal computer revolution has evolved to incorporate both centralized and local computing resources to best support business needs. Superior Endeavors can clear up your ‘cloudy business forecast’ by assessing the current state of your IT infrastructure and then designing and implementing solutions that leverage what you have and combining it with what the ‘Cloud’ offers.

Upper Missouri Ministries began in the 1940s with the first camp in July of 1946 on 43 acres of land. Today the camp area includes around 200 acres. It’s grown over the years with added buildings such as the Lodge in 1945, the Chapel in 1946, the retreat center in 1981. In 2005 the UMM Board of Directors created a 5-year plan

to allow year-round program growth and they are currently moving forward with For the Ages Campaign. Recently they’ve added on to the retreat center providing 6 private rooms with showers, toilets and beds. They are excited to use it this fall for upcoming retreats. Summer 2012 was the 66th summer.

The summer camp at UMM runs from the first week in June to about the second week in August. Youth members ranging from kindergarten to high school graduates are able to sign up for camps throughout the summer months lasting anywhere from one day to a full week. This past summer over the 10 week program they’ve had about 570 campers and about 550 which participated in Vocation Bible School, where they go into surrounding communities for VBS. On the weekends the camp opens up for family reunions or get togethers.

Some of the highlights of camp are the beach where children can canoe, swim and kayak, the mud pit, archery, volleyball, basketball

and tether ball, campfires at night, arts and crafts, frisbee golf and nature walks or bird watching. What staff members like most about a camp like this is seeing new faces, especially with the growth of the area and youth members meeting new people, making new memories and creating UMM families. For one summer about 25 college aged young adults are hired for cooking, cleaning, maintenance and counseling. They learn to work and help out in a Christian community while mentoring, teaching and helping younger members have a Christ-centered experience. They not only gain experiences, but also the satisfaction of doing good deeds and serving others.

Being open year-round some upcoming events include weekend retreats. The month of September are mostly men’s and women’s retreats. In October and November, once the kids are past the hustle and bustle of starting the school year, younger members are welcomed back for different retreats. One such event is BUG events for young girls. BUG standing for Beautiful Unique Girls. This retreat helps young girls develop good self-esteem. For more information check out the web site for the camp: http://www.campumm.org/

In the United States childhood obesity has become commonplace. 1 out of 3 children between the ages of 6 and 17 are obese. Look around. The epidemic is here.

Children are developing diseases that until now were only seen in adults, including type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Their weight is putting them at a highly increased risk for heart disease, stroke, osteoarthritis, asthma and certain cancers.

There are several ways we can help our youth; Schedule yearly well-child visits. Take your child to the doctor for well-child checkups at least once a year. During this visit, the doctor measures your child’s height and weight and calculates his or her BMI. Increases in your child’s BMI or in his or her percentile rank over one year, especially if your child is older than 4, is a possible sign that your child is at risk of becoming overweight.

Set a good example. Make sure you eat healthy foods and exercise regularly to maintain your weight. Children learn by our illustration.

Avoid food-related power struggles with your child. As a general rule, don’t use food as a reward or punishment.

Emphasize the positive. Encourage a healthy lifestyle by highlighting the positive — the fun of playing outside or the variety of fresh fruit you can get year-round, for example. Emphasize the benefits of exercise apart from helping to manage weight. For example, it makes the heart, lungs and other muscles stronger. If you foster your child’s natural inclination to run around, explore and eat only when hungry — not out of boredom — a healthy weight should take care of itself.

Be patient. Many overweight children

grow into their extra pounds as they get taller. Realize, too, that an intense focus on your child’s eating habits and weight can easily backfire, leading a child to overeat even more, or possibly making him or her more prone to developing an eating disorder.

Be responsible about your own weight. Obesity often occurs in several family members. If you need to lose weight, doing so will motivate your child to do likewise. Don’t expect your child to do something you are unwilling to do for yourself.

Change habits subtly. A great way to begin this is by evaluating daily bad habits and changing them. A good example is cutting out sugary drinks like soda and sports/energy drinks. One 12 ounce can of soda is between 120-179 calories Daily for one year, this can add up to eighteen pounds.

Get them involved. Have the children help cook meals. This is a great way to multi-task. You can spend quality time with them and they are more likely to eat the food they help repair.

National Childhood Obesity Month

Rachel Whittier R.N., has 12 years the medical industry and is the Clinic Manager of Fairlight Medical Center. She has been certified by the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation and has completed a NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health) approved Pulmonary Function training course.

Dakota Lawmakers Tour ND Oil PatchGrand Forks Rep. Gary Paur used to travel to the other side of the state for some hunting and time alone.

With the explosion of oil activity in western North Dakota, he barely recognizes the place. “You could spend all day out there and not see anybody,” Paur said. “The solitude is gone.” Paur was one of more than two dozen lawmakers from the Dakotas who toured the oil patch this week to get a firsthand look at the boom and its impact on the area in an event sponsored by the North Dakota Petroleum Council.

Lawmakers were bused to drilling rig and oil well sites and spent the night Wednesday in a crew camp near Williston. They also got an earful from local officials looking for help with millions of dollars in infrastructure needs.

More than half of Williston’s residents now work in oil-related jobs, the city’s unemployment rate is less than 1 % and there are more than 3,000 unfilled jobs.Williston Mayor Ward Koeser told lawmakers Thursday that the city’s

population has doubled in the past decade. He estimated the city has more than a half-billion dollars in immediate infrastructure needs.

Koeser said leaders in the region will be aggressive in asking for help when the Legislature convenes in January. The entire state is sharing in the billions of dollars in new wealth, but western North Dakota is paying the price, the mayor said.

Most of the lawmakers invited on the tour were from cities well outside the oil patch. Tioga Rep. David Rust, whose district is near the oil patch, said he hoped the tour would be an eye-opener. AP

The price of oil is falling on increased speculation that the U.S. will release oil from reserves to ease the commodity’s rising cost. Oil prices stalled this week as traders avoided big moves ahead of the release of Federal Reserve minutes from last month’s meeting for clues as to the intentions of the U.S. central bank’s policymakers.

Oil prices are up more than $8 per barrel this month. Releasing crude from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve would boost the supply of oil, which would drive prices lower. Oil was previously released due to conflict in Libya and after Hurricane Katrina.

Oil has risen to around $96 per barrel in recent days from $78 in late June. Investors have been worried about disruption to oil supplies in the Middle East and North Sea.

In the U.S., there were problems with refineries and pipelines in the West Coast and Midwest, including a fire in

California. Seasonal factors are also at play: Summer blends of gas cost more and demand goes up as families go on vacation.

Additionally, the Obama administration appears to be concerned about high gasoline prices. It will monitor gas prices to see whether they fall before making a decision.

Tropical Storm Isaac also moderated, easing concerns that the storm would damage to key oil and gas operations in the Gulf of Mexico. About one-quarter of the nation’s oil is produced in the Gulf of Mexico. AP

Movie Review - LawlessJohn Hillcoat’s new movie, “Lawless” — written by Nick Cave — is based on a true-story novel called “The Wettest County in the World,” by Matt Bondurant. The area in question is Franklin County, Va., and in 1931, when most of the action in the film takes place, it was a bloody paradise of bootleggers. This picturesque corner of Appalachia has now provided a bonanza for dialect coaches and their charges, who set the hills alive with a symphony of dropped consonants and attenuated vowels almost as violent as the gunfire that periodically erupts.

At the center of the cacophony are the three Bondurant brothers, forebears of the author of “The Wettest County” and upholders of a stubborn mountain code of independence and honor. Forrest, the taciturn would-be patriarch, is played by Tom Hardy, who was born in London. Howard, his drunk and volatile enforcer, is played by the Australian actor Jason Clarke. The twitchy, weak-willed runt of the litter, Jack, is our own Shia LaBeouf.

Life in Franklin County is brutal and complicated, especially when a Chicago lawman named Rakes (Guy Pearce), a sadist with slicked-down hair, chalk-striped suits and remarkable diction, starts to muscle in on the local moonshine action. When the Bondurants refuse to play by his rules — preferring to deal directly with a mob boss (Gary Oldman) — a nasty little war breaks out. Faces are pummeled; throats are cut; and shotguns, hunting knives and brass knuckles are put to grisly use.

“Lawless” seems unsure of just how tough it wants to be, bouncing between rollicking backwoods humor and graphic violence, with a dollop of good-old-boys

sentimentality thrown in for good measure. It has neither the stripped-down intensity of “The Proposition,” Mr. Hillcoat and Mr. Cave’s 2006 outback western, nor the lyrical austerity of “The Road,” Mr. Hillcoat’s not bad 2009 adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s postapocalyptic parable.

There are too many action-movie clichés without enough dramatic purpose, and interesting themes and anecdotes are scattered around without being fully explored. This is weak and cloudy moonshine: it doesn’t burn or intoxicate.

“Lawless” is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). Swearin’, killin’, gittin’ nekkid. By A. O. SCOTT nytimes.com

Arnold Schwarzenegger made a career for himself as an unforgiving assassin and action hero in various blockbuster films, but it might make ‘The Governator’ blush when remembering some of his previous film roles. One example is his breakout role in the 1970’s fantasy adventure Hercules in New York. Watching the toga-clad Schwarzenegger roam around NYC because Zeus banished him from Olympus is embarrassing and a far cry from the Terminator.

Wacky NewsA construction worker who tried to help police corral a runaway cow said the bovine charged at him “like a bull at a rodeo,” tossing him into the air before continuing its rampage through the streets of Billings Montana. The cow ran amok in downtown for more than an hour and a half, terrifying pedestrians and knocking over a bicyclist. Morgan Logan of Acton suffered injuries in his lower leg and had sore ribs after his encounter with the 1,200-pound black Angus cow after it escaped from the Public Auction Yards on Tuesday. ”I’ve been around livestock my whole life, so at first sight I thought it was pretty funny seeing cops chase a cow down the street,” said Logan. “But she was like a bull at a rodeo.”

ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20)You might find your choices split between practical realism and an almost dreamlike state. You may have an important decision to make connected with job and ca-reer issues midweek. You might be eager to find a practical solution. Friday’s Full Moon in Pisces takes you into another space, which is great for parties and having fun, as well as deeply spiritual. You may find it easiest to go with the flow rather than follow a definite plan over the weekend.TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21)You’re very attuned to the spirit world and yet you’re also keenly aware of what needs to be done in order to make progress. You may be busy gathering resources and connecting with the right people in order to get creative projects off the ground. Yet Friday’s Full Moon in Pisces may mean you get a lot more done when you’re out having fun and enjoying life. Allow insights and guidance to come to you. They may save you time and money.GEMINI (May 22-June 21)You may be in the mood to splurge on luxuries, especially if you’ve been considering making over either yourself or your home. At the same time, you might need to make a decision that could transform aspects of your current lifestyle. Overall, this is a positive, upbeat week despite the current confusion surrounding certain issues. You may be in the mood to make plans as Mercury moves into Virgo on Friday, but you could end up having fun and watching movies instead.CANCER (June 22-July 22)Although you seem more vulnerable right now, you’re also very appealing. The presence of Mars in your romance zone may be working wonders for your libido. Things should start to heat up in this area pretty soon, if they haven’t already. Be prepared for a few intense encounters. Friday’s Full Moon is beautiful and mystical, so you might feel like heading off into the blue yonder to enjoy the discoveries awaiting you. Try not to send mixed signals over the weekend.

LEO (July 23-Aug 22)There are some things you’re only too happy to share, and other issues about which you wish to remain silent. It could be something gestating and growing inside you. Don’t give away your secret prematurely, as you may halt the process by doing so. You’ll know when it’s time to share this with the world, but for now keep it to yourself. Mercury moves into your personal financial zone over the weekend, which might encourage you to get your finances in order.VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23)The Sun trines Pluto midweek, which might mean that you need to make a choice that has lasting consequences. Make sure you think it through before you finally decide. Friday’s Full Moon in Pisces is like a blast of cosmic energy that may temporarily eclipse your mind and encourage you to dive deep within the well of your being. On the other hand, this influence is fantastic for parties and get-togethers, and may bring a few romantic surprises as well.LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23)You’re still in that phase when it helps to rest and take life a bit easier. The Sun in your spiritual zone means you may feel more vulnerable. You need a chance to reflect on life and what you really want. Meanwhile, Mars in Scorpio and your personal financial zone may increase your desire for material goods as well as emotional experiences. When you want something, you really want it, and you could be prepared to go to extremes to get it.SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22)With Mars in Scorpio, you’re even more intense than usual. The focus this week seems to be on your social life and romantic efforts. Friday’s Full Moon in Pisces could bring you more than you bargained for. It’s time to let your feelings flow without trying to control them. You may be in for a very pleasant surprise if you surrender to the mood of the moment. As Mercury opposes Neptune, it’s important not to confuse the signals you send and receive.

SAGITTARIUS(Nov.23-Dec. 21)The Sun trines Pluto midweek, which might encourage you to take a bold step forward on your career path. This time you’re determined that no one will get in your way. Friday’s Full Moon takes place in your home zone. It’s perfect for parties or get-togethers. You won’t need much alcohol in order to have a good time. You’ll simply absorb the great vibes from everyone around you. Mercury in Leo suggests you’re still in the mood to explore ideas and beliefs.CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20)Mars is currently stirring up your social life to bring some very interesting people your way. You love to connect with the movers and shakers in your community and now you have the chance. The Full Moon in Pisces might inspire your imagination to create poetry or come up with a brilliant idea for a piece of fiction. Don’t dismiss your thoughts as they could bring you a fortune. Meanwhile, Jupiter in Gemini continues to give you robust health and a hearty appetite.AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19)You can be quite passionate about your career when it comes right down to it, and this is very much the case now as Mars moves through your career zone. You seem very determined to succeed despite any obstacles you may face. This week’s Full Moon in Pisces could bring on a powerful desire to shop. Beware if you feel a need to escape the harsh realities of life and seek refuge in some of your local malls. Have fun, but don’t overspend.PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20)Your relationship zone is highlighted this week. However, this may do very little to restore a sense of clarity and purpose to ongoing business or romantic relationships. Things could get even more confusing as the Full Moon in Pisces brings feelings out into the open. It may seem that you love everybody, which could make a current love interest quite jealous. Meanwhile, Mars in Scorpio encourages you to explore and perhaps go on a magical mystery tour. You’ll love it.

On September 11, the United States was attaked. The attackers flew commercial jet airliners into both towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. They were Islamic terrorists from Saudi Arabia and several other Arab nations. Reportedly financed by Saudi fugitive Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda terrorist organization, they were allegedly acting in retaliation for America’s support of Israel, its involvement in the Persian Gulf War, and its continued military presence in the Middle East. Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S. led international effort to oust the Taliban regime in Afghanistan and destroy Osama bin Laden’s terrorist network based there, began on October 7, 2001. Bin Laden was killed during a raid of his compound in Pakistan by U.S. forces on May 2, 2011.
