And while a number of resourceful people have converted shipping containers into shelters throughout the world for many years, recent architects and green designers have turned to transforming these strong yet cheap boxes into the versatile building blocks of their artistic works.

Shipping containers can be easily modified, and offer a range of creature comforts to both businesses and inhabitants. Due to their easy-transportation and versatile shape, containers can be connected and stacked to create modular, efficient spaces for a fraction of the cost, labour and resources of more conventional materials.

CONTAINER BUILDS

Not just for the resourceful, container architecture has recently took the world by storm, and provides cost-effective, flexible and efficient living for the modern-day individual or family.Boasting a contemporary and green theme from source to design, recycled freight containers are an innovative use of an otherwise disregarded object.

CONTAINER CITY

Located on Trinity Buoy Wharf, London, Container City was installed in 2001, and was branded the first of its kind.The building and fitting of the site took just 5 months, and to-date now provides over 34 private studios, offices and short and long-term accommodation in the heart of the vibrant capital.

PROJECT KEETWONEN STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

Labelled as the largest container city in the world, Amsterdam’s huge Keetwonen complex provides home to 1,000 students. Designed in 2006, Keetwonen has been a huge success, with each resident enjoying a balcony, bathroom, kitchen, separate sleeping, study rooms and large windows. Due to its popularity – Keetwonen’s lease has been extended until 2016!

SHIPPING CONTAINER OFFICE AND SHOP TOWER

In an attempt to reinforce their brand (a company that produces faded-colour bags from recycled materials), a German manufacturer chose to build their new office and store tower units from stacked shipping containers. Not only did they save on construction costs, this bold decision helped them to make a statement as well as promote the sustainability values of their business.

ILLY CONTAINER CAFE

Having been inspired by recent container builds, Italian coffee roasters illycaffe decided to commission a green architect to build the Push Button House.In just 90 seconds, a compact metal container opens into a fully furnished cafe, with functional kitchen, dining room, bathroom, bedroom, living room and even a library! Pretty cool, eh?
