Inside the Weird World of

Alternative Fuels

When it comes to feeding your vehicle with juice, you

probably haven’t given it much thought past

petrol vs. diesel.

After all, these are the fuels that most people come into contact with.

But just outside of the mainstream, there’s a whole world of

weird and wonderful fuels…

INTRODUCING ALTERNATIVE FUELS

Whether it’s to help the environment, or simply to prove that it’s possible,

ingenious innovators have come up with ways to recycle

natural products into unlikely fuels that

really can power cars.

But Wait! Not just any car - generally, special engines or motors

will also be required.

The Cutting Edge of innovation

The Humble Onion

If you’re tired of getting tears in your eyes every time you chop an

onion, then maybe it’s time to put them to another use.

Once fermented, onions produce

methane gas

which can then be converted into electricity to power electric cars.

Electric cars are a great eco alternative to traditional motors.

Best of all, the leftover mashed

up onions can then be turned

into food for cattle,

and less waste equals an

environmental win-win.

ELECTRIC CARS

Mmm, delicious…

Chip fat can be a key component in

bio-fuel – an exciting alternative

to diesel which

almost any converted diesel engine can run on!

CHIP FAT

Thin Air

Okay, so you can’t just leave your car out in the wind

and hope for the best, but specialised engines

designed to use compressed air

can make for a very cost-

effective choice.

Unfortunately, powering cars with air

isn’t considered a viable option right now,

however , who knows what the future will hold…

Probably the latest innovation is a new bio-fuel made from

left over beer

Now available in New Zealand,

not just for those who seek it out,

but in petrol stations across the country!
